When Greg Oden was taken as the number 1 pick in the NBA draft over Kevin Durant, nobody anticipated how much his career would be limited by injury after injury. From a hip surgery in middle school to a fractured kneecap and 3 microfracture surgeries, Greg Oden was one of a kind on a basketball court and his medical history was also like none other in NBA history. Oden, Roy and Aldridge trio gotta be one of the biggest what if’s in nba history... when all 3 played the blazers were 60-12
Maby Lillard if they still traded for him
Yes and derrick rose too
@@yodaddy9362 I always wonder about him to he was so quick
50-12*
Not really. Roy had red flags all over him because his knees were always jacked and was destined for a short career. Oden ran like (and looks like lol) an old unathletic man even as a 20yo, flat footed clunky unathletic running action.
Man that's heartbreaking. Must be devastating to lose the ability to fulfill your dream just like that
Yes, but thankfully for him it came after those millions of dollars were coming. If it happened before the NBA, would be significantly worse
@@MarMaxGaming yea but I’m sure his dream wasn’t making millions of dollars… it was playing in the nba
@@OwenHimschoot I’m sure it was actually both. What I’m saying is, thank goodness this guy doesn’t have to scramble for work with a horrendous knee injury. He has the regret and sadness of the things that never came, but I’m glad that’s the height of his worries as opposed to figuring out rent next month while dealing with problems standing on his feet all day or something.
skill issue
I've been following the Greg Oden story since it began when he was drafted, and this is by far the best, most detailed analysis of what happened.
If I had your videos when I was a teenager, it would have inspired be to be interested in studying medicine.
I'm sure you inspire the future doctors of the world.
Aside from pure entertainment and education, your videos are really making a change in people's lives. Both those who may become doctors because of them, and athletes who can better understand the dangers in their sports and how to avoid them. Thanks doc!
never too late🤷♀️😊
It’s never too late! 🤗❤️
I had the same injury. I shattered my knee cap at 12 and tore my patella jumping the same way at 14 after a growth spurt. . 16 I was dunking at 6'1 played high school ball with no problems. Guess we all heal different. 4 total surgeries for me.
Shame Oden's career turned out the way it did. Dude was a beast at Ohio State, I remember going to a few games that season and just watching dominate almost everyone.
as a man being injured and not being able to fill his role in life is definitely a major stress on the mental. that’s sad though how he would always apologize i’ve known the feeling
Looking forward to a time when medicine has advanced enough that players with amazing potential like Oden won't have to be sidelined with this type of injury.
Honestly you could almost say that this is true about Kawhi. Think about how many injuries he has had and it's probably modern medicine that has kept him from retiring.
@@cameronmacdonald3360 Good point, we've seen medicine come a long way already! Seems like injuries that would end players careers just a few years ago are being treated successfully.
Pretty sure modern medicine is going to advance for other people and won’t be specialized to help people who bounce balls around
@@JohnDoe-sw1rs Some of those people who "bounce balls around" are billionaires who are worth 10's if not 100's of millions to their respective franchises, but yeah I'm sure modern medicine is going to advance for the altruistic reason of helping the "other people" you've mentioned. Good point...
@@gideonfyah1 Billionaires who became rich because greater people willed it. Bouncing a ball doesn’t generate money, people do. The people who pull the strings, own teams, have shares in the NBA and much more are powerful families who are also lobbyists for big pharma and oil companies. These ball bouncers are nothing and will be lost to time.
I am 14 and had SCFE last year and was playing hockey and crashing into the boards and needed a pin and still need rehab it is one of the most painful feelings I have felt.
Thanks 😊
Sorry you had to go through that bro. Youll come back stronger!!
@@MrThyten thanks
You got this dude!
Good luck god bless you
Funny story about Greg. He hurt himself at a local bowling alley and arcade playing dance dance revolution while playing for the Blazers
@how come stop linking this as a reply to everyone, no one cares
Big Al’s? Nothing good ever comes outta the couv.
That’s was Andrew Bynum
@@nonyobussiness3440 no it wasn't but okay
Hows that funny?
Please do Sam Bowie.
The guy with weak shins that was riddled with injuries...and he was also known for being drafted 2nd overall right before a player notorious for taking everything personal.
Is he the one who had stress fractures but hid them from the team because he wanted to get paid and because he played with the fractures, they got worse and worse?
@@lemongavine
I think that’s what happened but it’s been so long since I did research on him.
@@AnonymousRandomGuy006 hopefully doc will do a segment on it. Would be interesting.
Bowie was the Tim Duncan prototype
So many players have short careers due to bad diagnosis. Doc B, you're a gem bro!
I have such a love/hate relationship with your videos. I find them intensely interesting and educational, but at some point, you always make my skin crawl. I will never unsee the image of that broken patella😱
I put most of these injuries on the orthotic, having worked on his mechanics for 5 years and then adding that 8mm back probably caused just enough inconsistency and stability that it brought damage. Crazy to think about the possibility of a healthy Greg Oden, but more so hope he is doing well mentally and physically now.
He recently one the big 3 basketball championship. Lower caliber of game but nice to see him still enjoying the game
That ad input was silky smooth
I was coming to comment this lmao😂
Ya
Such a sad story, especially the part about him constantly apologizing for getting injured, hope he’s found health and happiness in his post basketball life
As a Trailblazers fan... these videos have brought back these videos have put me through a rollercoaster of emotions 😂. I remember so much hope for the future with Oden, Roy & LA. And to have it all end so abruptly is sad
Thank you! Was looking forward to you doing one on Oden.
When you said "if Oden was around today..." I thought you meant he died. LOL had to check goggle
Thank you for addressing the topic of microfracture surgery! Tweeted you about it a few weeks ago 👏🏼
One of the biggest what ifs in NBA history
Thank you Dr. for your videos like always! 😊
Thank you so much for the video! They're so informative and well done it's amazing to watch as an unknowing guy like me.
Could you by any chance make one about Compartment-Syndrom as a result of low kicks on the thighs? I suffered from one - luckily without breaking the thigh bone - after 4 years of Thai training and would love to see you informing others about the risk of the sport.
Slowest response ever from the Doc
The mental part is something a lot of people don't understand. I didn't understand it either until I tore my ACL. That fear that it could randomly tear again is always in the back of your head
I would love to see an in-depth analysis of the string of injuries TMAC suffered throughout his career, why he suffered them (posture, way he runs and jumps, habits etc) and how they affected him gradually.
You gotta do more videos like this Is great
I watch pretty much every one of your videos but I was wondering if you could possibly do a couple more hockey videos (especially with playoff injuries) just an idea love your videos by the was I learn so much about every injury, it’s just interesting I guess
Hi, Brian! Can you make a video about Simona Halep's injury at Rome 2021? Nobody understands what happened there. Thanks! Keep doing great job!
Please do an anylysis on victor oladipos injury as a heat fan id love to understand his surgery and the risks
Dr Brian, could you PLEASE show us your collection of jerseys and hockey sweaters? I keep imagining a closet that is super impressive!
Excellent stuff Doc... What a sad history, Greg Oden was a real deal, however those legs were like a newspaper.... Lol.
Doc, could you explain Galen Rupp Aquiles injury and how he recovered to classify for Tokio 2021 olympics ?... Thanks in avance, a Big hug from 🇨🇱🏃♂️🏀
I’m definitely no doctor but “it’s like ice cream falling off an ice cream 🍦 “ just don’t feel like the best way to describe what happen here lmao
Doc, that ad drop was smoooooth
Remembering when Oden and Drummond were on the same team! 😯
What about the distinct possibility of microfracturing resulting in keloiding? I experienced this after a lateral release knee surgery in the early 90s, and had to have a second operation just to remove and cauterize the scar tissue.
Love your content. Hope Oden got some mental health support
Do the Blazers have the worse medical/training staff in all of sports? These problems have been happening since the beginning of the franchise with Bill Walton.
no the pelicans have worst med staff, see antonio davis & demarcus cousins
@@jmc7504 Bill Walton, Sam Bowie, Sabonis, Brandon Roy and Greg Oden would like to disagree. Seeing that Portland also didn't discover LaMarcus Aldridge's heart issues also raises more red flags. Man could have died on the court
Hi. I would like to ask a question. 2 years ago i suddenly got taller and actually had a subtrohanteric fracture in my right leg. I used to play football and I remember some pretty good hits on that part of the leg. Is that the reason why that happened in the first place?? Apart from that great video
Looking forward to the Microfracture surgery Video. Nowadays it isn't that common anymore, like 10-15 years ago.
I already got my popcorn. Waiting for the new video XD
horizontal patella fracture.. hideous injury. Great video, nice to hear a doctor talking about movement dysfunctions. too many just think it's all nuts and bolts.
the ad plug was too smoth Brian .. Nice video as always
Need more of these on injury riddled NBA players who didn’t get to fulfill their potential
its interesting you mention the risk of injury that can come from a rapid, large growth spurt if i understand correctly. Could that also help explain why AD has been so injury plagued his whole career? Ik he also had a growth spurt like that in 8th grade i believe
Is your digital diagram software you get when you’re a doctor or can anyone use it?
This could be a good idea for a series. Not NBA injuries but overall sports injuries that really ended or hindered an athlete's potential such as Grant Hill, Ken Griffey Jr etc.
Ive used "clean my mac" for years on several computers and it always works great for me. I am bad about finding old files I can delete on my mac. The files would just end up taking space for over a year when I didn't need them. I am only saying this cause it really did work well for someone like me, who doesn't have a very technical understanding of computers.
What do they do now instead of microfracture for torn articular cartilage?
Have you done one on Grant Hill? I searched but could not find one.
The Blazers already had two potentially great big men with foot and leg problems: Bill Walton and Sam Bowie. A real shame how all these guys had their careers derailed. Walton is in the HOF but injuries greatly limited him.
Can you please do an analysis on Ufc Shane Burgoise vs Edson Barbosa? This is the oddest thing I've ever seen and I along with others would love to hear an explanation to this.
SCFE case here. Tall and heavy as a kid. Lol. Both hips ended up replaced when I was 18 due to chondrolysis and osteonecrosis. Had a revision done on the left hip back in 2021. Not as tall as Oden, though. I stopped at 6'8".
Wow that photo of the broken kneecap is naasssttyyy
Can you please do a video on a skateboarder? I would love to see your medical insight on a sport that is so harsh on the body.
I had SCFE in 6th grade. Worst pain of my life!
When he was healthy (which was not unfortunately very often) he was a tremendous physical force. He would have been a very productive player. I'm not sure how long a career he could have had. it seemed his body was just not durable enough to grind year after year. But he would have been an All Star for sure.
Professor Brian giving history lessons
I am a patient from China. Before the surgery, my cartilage was intact. After the surgery, the most critical parts were destroyed, which was clearly shown in the MRI. It makes me feel hatred and endless pain
Danilo Galinari has implied that his lengthy return from an ACL tear while a member of the Denver Nuggets was prolonged by the method and cutting edge techniques used in the first repair surgery. Might be worth a “look back” video like this one.
Portland could've been a championship contender with healthy Oden, Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge + Dame and CJ on the Backcourt
Hey doc, if you're interested in European football ("soccer"), can you speak on Ousmane Dembele's injuries. Hopefully he'll stay fit this season. Thank you!
Greg Oden gotta miss em 😔
Really fast!!
Doc Brian been slacking a bit lol no video on Dustin May elbow injury nothing on Jaylen Brown season ending injury nothing on Kyrie hurt again love his content still though very informative easy to understand :)
I like that Portland jersey in the back but is thst a good thing or bad thing for it to be there?💀
The most serious injury in NBA history was to Maurice Stokes of Cincinnati, who was left a quadriplegic after a fall. The treatment was smelling salts, and the paralysis developed two days later during a flight back to Cincinnati.
Damn. This whole time I assumed he injured the knee when he landed. But to know he got it while jumping is crazy to me!
BIG UPS AND GOD BLESS TO THE SURGEON'S AT THE OLD CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL 1997. WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND HAD BROKEN GROWTH PLATE IN MY ANKLE THE FIXED LIKE NEW. I HAVE NO PROBLEMS TO THIS DAY
Jonathan Isaac is seeing some similar case too :(
Great content as usual. Greg Oden couldn't catch a break.
He was also reportedly 31 years old when he entered the NBA draft
@@jasonrichardson1999 wait, that's not true is it? I used to always joke about how he looked like he was 50 when he was drafted.
@@fromulus according to some reports he was like 30 when he came to the NBA draft
Unfortunately, he caught several breaks. 😐
Could the conditioner at the start also be called perthes
U had me lost until u mentioned the ice cream reference 😏
I saw “oden” and clicked the video on instinct 😂
Hi Dr. Sutterer, could you talk about Roger Federer's knee? He injured his knee over and over.
This is really sad :(
I have to have a hip surgery and it might be perthes disease😢
That's just so sad
Dont know how to get this too you another way. Can you check out the diego Sanchez / Joshua fabia video. This is the one of Sanchez hanging upside down and his trainer fabia hitting, slapping and kicking his head.
Gonna cover Souza arm snap?
Yeah, I saw that old lady talking to Oden that’s why Im here. Didn’t you?
"This is your number 1 source for learning about the unique medical side of sports..." Checks sources... Actually it's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 🥰👍🏼😂
A doctor explains why all my favorite NBA could haves never were... Either this dudes a genius or a real doctor... I'm impressed no matter
1,000+ days without picking up a ball, I couldn't imagine...
Patient: Doctor I can’t get my son to stop playing fortnite!
Dr Brian: Have you tried substituting it for something else? Let me tell you about Raid Shadow Legends, the diverse list of characters is forever being updated...
I can't imagine so much talent going to waste, in any sport.
The young man simply did Not have Legs built to withstand a Pro Basketball season.
He had all the talent in the world, but without any awareness of how to train & develop his legs he was bound for injury after injury.
Sports & Exercise Science has improved abit in the last decade so a young man can train in a manor to fortify their legs for the long haul of a season if they care to seek out the knowledge.
The biggest what I’d would be If penny hardaway wasn’t always injured.
The only person who’s shoes Jordan wore during a game.
Can you please do Brandon roy
If you haven't yet, can you do Ronnie Coleman!
Cries in Trail Blazer 😭
Biggest what if is it blazers drafted Kevin Durant
Oden, Roy, Bowie and Walton. The Blazers franchise is cursed man.
Please do D-Rose
Talking about mental stress after injury, Saquon Barkley...
Sounds super painful damn
Blazer fan here... too soon, man.
I had Scfe at 13
what surgery would he probably get now?
I'm kinda curious now. Can you explain why Westbrook has the same style of play as Rose and yet Rose is like a man made of glass?
Because Westbrook actually knows how to land properly Westbrook has even had multiple knee injuries like Rose but unlike Rose and now Ja Morant Russ knows how to land on 2 feet after dunks and layups
Their landing mechanics. Westbrook knows how to land despite all the torque he applies to his body.
Pov:You searched greg oden injury because of him talking to that old lady
