i actually agree with griffin. you never know a player's true character. bennett might actually be a good player, but no matter how talented he is, if he didn't work at all, and if he broke under the pressure,he would always fail, not everyone has what it takes mentally to be great.
I really appreciate this take. Honestly, you cant say that people like Oden were easily a bust. They had a talent, they had a promising performance, but injuries were lingering too much. I also can't say Bargnani as one either, as he had a pretty long career and he had some good moments; although its clear he was not living up the expectations much longer. Bennett, ironically, never been injured, never had any bad circumstances, yet he gave up on trying and his productivity lost like its never been there. Yeah he might be the worst ever 1st pick.
Yeah, I feel bad for them because for Greg Oden, he was supposed to potentially be a top-10 center of all time but sadly got ruined by injuries (like Brandon Roy too), and also for Anthony Bennett, right when he got into the NBA, he couldn't succeed and get to his college self, which is weird, and those bad games really didn't help; it just ruined his potential, and of course there's Kwame Brown, whose career got ruined apparently because of Michael Jordan's ego and his toughness on him.

He was a big that was shooting about 42% from three which is ELITE especially for his size and one of the reasons he was picked up by the Rockets that value floor spacing. He was waived due to him requiring knee surgery - not necessarily because he was bad. Definitely could've been a good depth piece on that Rockets team with Westbrook and Harden.
Most lottery picks from 2008-14 were busts; when you look at it scouts were still stuck in the “Pre-Curry” NBA, over valuing the mid range and post skills. Curry really changed the whole league and how scouts scout talent since around 2016-present most lottery picks are solid role players or even superstars within 1-3years
So, we had how good is "name" for example how good is LeBron James actually, but we didn't have how bad is "name" for example, how bad was Greg oden actually.

Sam Bowie did play more than 500 games in the NBA. There is even a Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame... on Bowie (the NBA was a big man league then, and the Blazers already had Clyde Drexler and Jim Paxson as their backcourt).
I saw Anthony Bennett drop like maybe 10 straight points in his rookie season for the Cavs. The guy looked promising as hell. Who knew that was the last time he would play well.
This whole video can’t be taken seriously because they failed to mention he was hurt at the beginning of the season which caused him to be out of shape and they hurried him back. Bad franchise
I thought he actually did pretty well his season with the Nets. He shot a lot of threes at a low percentage, but his two point percentage was in the upper 50s and he made it to the foul line a lot where he was decent free throw shooter. He also rebounded the ball really well. The main drawback was his defense. I expected him to make the rotation somewhere the next year and be a solid backup forward collecting 20+ minutes a game. I guess I was wrong.
I just went back and compared to stats to Zion Williamson. I am obviously not claiming that Bennett is as good as Zion, but they are both strong, but relatively short power forwards. Zion is shooting 31% from 3. Bennett 27% Zion 63% from 2 Bennet 57% Bennet got to the line more than 50% more than Zion who is one of the best at it. He got to the line A LOT! Zion 69% from line Bennet 72% Williamson shoots more scoring 28.2 points per 36 minutes compared to 15.7 for Bennet. Zion 7.7 rebounds per 36 minutes Bennet 10.6 rebounds per 36 minutes Zion is a much better passer with with 5 assists compared to 2.2. Neither is a great defender (yet) So there really is a fine line between being a super star and a bust. I really thought Bennett would be playing 20+ minutes per game right now. I never though offenses would run through him or around him like Zion, but I thought he would come off the bench, grab rebounds and score efficiently inside.
It's about his mentality. The burden of being number 1 pick is too much for him. Once they realized he was a bust, he kinda lost interest in becoming a better player and that ruined his career
@@danangdwiatma3999 for short he became lazy and quit when his opponents becaome stronger. He only dominated high school and college because of weaker competition
One factor could be character. I don't really know what Bennett is like as a person. But the NBA has a lot of very aggressive and slick guys that can play mind games during matches. If he was socially shy that could be a big factor. It can eat away at your confidence if you don't know how to deal with diabolical bullying dudes and I'd wager there are plenty of those. You know the old quiet boy from Canada thing. Although Griffins explanation is probably more plausible.

7:14 what is a 'black hole on defense'? a 'black hole' in basketball means when you get passed the ball, you always shoot it. like how nothing comes out of a black hole in space. it doesnt make sense in a defensive context
Genetics, essentially. Contrary to what a lot of people will tell you that it’s ‘mind over matter,’ personality traits such as conscientiousness, which typically determines whether someone is an organised hard worker or a more chaotic and careless type, is predominantly determined by the combinations of genes we receive from our parents. Personalities are like athletic abilities, you are born with certain gifts and curses. Some more than others. Upbringing has some significant influence but mainly when you’re young. Once you turn like 18, your basic personality dimension is set, and you can only make minute changes through learning. So his family got the return that they put in. It’s not like they instilled a good work ethic in him. Or maybe they tried but his lazy genetics were too strong. In any case, no one really controls who they turn out to be - without getting too philosophical
@notimportant Then you obviously don’t read a great deal if a commonly accepted notion among geneticists & a widely accepted model of personality among psychologists amounts to ‘one of the most ridiculous things’ you’ve ever read. Research ‘The Big 5’ personality dimensions. What I’m saying is supported by tonnes of psychological & genetic research. Furthermore, you need to actually finish your thoughts. Calling something ‘ridiculous’ while making no effort to demonstrate why is not a logical strategy. You doubled down on this hollow form of criticism in the 2nd comment when you eluded to being able to name ‘quite a few’ players, but then you never bother to actually name a single one. Both of these comments are worthless, bro. You need to do more than effortlessly dismissing something as ‘ridiculous’ without at the very least explaining your reasoning. I’m all ears if you want to expand upon your position.
@notimportant Sorry, but how do any of those examples contradict my point in any way shape or form? If anything they support my point 😂 My whole point was that genetics is a huge factor in player development, and then you cite a bunch of players that don’t work hard but still get results? Well, yeah. That’s literally what I’m saying. Those players get accolades because they are genetically gifted. It doesn’t matter how hard they work (by the standards of basic NBA training) because they are blessed with abilities that means they will succeed doing the bare minimum amount of work. I don’t even agree with most of your examples anyway - Simmons, Lavine - but even still you’ve got the wrong end of the stick.
@@matthewvaughan8192 I just want everyone who reads this to NOT take this guy's first reply as fact. It's pseudoscience that has no scientific backing. Science is awesome and interesting, but don't trust people who say things like "Once you turn like 18, your basic personality dimension is set".

I was playing 2k14 until now I just modified the game to the latest rosters and added cyber faces "Great hands are Gift but average hands (I forgot the line)" I just heard this from the PA announcer in the game but it was a quote for me it was like Bennett was gifted great hands unlike Giannis at that time who has the average hands and lots of space to improve now he became a star, MVP
He had incredible talent and upside. He was just soft. Didn't have the drive to dedicate himself enough to be great. I play co-ed softball with a guy that was a VERY good safety at NCSU (not too long ago) and got drafted to the NFL. He just wasn't that kind of guy. It wasn't his passion and he simply wasn't enjoying the grind. If he had that killer instinct, he could have been a good pro, but he just didn't have it in him. He is a hell of guy and a good friend, but seeing him effortlessly do things that most people can't every weekend...it makes me kind of sad, but I'm glad he is happy with his decision.
I think he might’ve done better if he was picked where he was expected to. If he was looked at more as a project, the team that drafted him wouldn’t be so quick to give up on him. After one year they were already ready to send him to the G-league and change his position.
I am amazed that no one could unlock his former potential. Does anyone know what was stopping him from getting better? Plenty of teams tried and failed. From what it sounds like he simply didn’t take care of himself and therefore was unable to sustain his play. A couple times up and down the court when you have zero fitness can really tucker you out particularly if you then need to take your large frame as well as body someone and then leap into the air and slam a dunk. Do that two or three times and you get his stat line. What a shame.

Is this the same Greg Oden who was tutoring at a university, and on the way to the gym was stopped and asked by an older lady if he played basketball? And he looked forlorn for a moment before saying "yeah, I used to"?
If so, then that's a heart ripper.
i actually agree with griffin. you never know a player's true character. bennett might actually be a good player, but no matter how talented he is, if he didn't work at all, and if he broke under the pressure,he would always fail, not everyone has what it takes mentally to be great.
i mean dude couldn't even become a role player he coudn't even play a whole season not even a half! he wasn't even hurt...
He literally said Oden was only a bust b/c of injuries. Nobody said he wasn’t talented.

Bennett 27%
Zion 63% from 2
Bennet 57%
Bennet got to the line more than 50% more than Zion who is one of the best at it. He got to the line A LOT!
Zion 69% from line
Bennet 72%
Williamson shoots more scoring 28.2 points per 36 minutes compared to 15.7 for Bennet.
Zion 7.7 rebounds per 36 minutes
Bennet 10.6 rebounds per 36 minutes
Zion is a much better passer with with 5 assists compared to 2.2.
Neither is a great defender (yet)
So there really is a fine line between being a super star and a bust. I really thought Bennett would be playing 20+ minutes per game right now.
I never though offenses would run through him or around him like Zion, but I thought he would come off the bench, grab rebounds and score efficiently inside.

One factor could be character. I don't really know what Bennett is like as a person. But the NBA has a lot of very aggressive and slick guys that can play mind games during matches. I just find it crazy that you can change your whole families life with an opportunity and not work hard and expand upon it.
@@przsper Lol! Every sports team needs a science nerd 🤓 It’s good for -- chemistry.
@@matthewvaughan8192 I just want everyone who reads this to NOT take this guy's first reply as fact. It's pseudoscience that has no scientific backing. Science is awesome and interesting, but don't trust people who say things like "Once you turn like 18, your basic personality dimension is set".
