- Today we visit the amazing Bay of Fires in the north east of Tasmania. It's a haven for photographers and on any day you'll see plenty of them there enjoying the magnificent views.
I had to battle through the elements a bit to get something worthwhile, but I was very pleased with the results in the end.

Thanks again for watching. I think Tassie should be on everyone's bucket list ..!!!
Beautiful scenery. Made me so hungry watching you have breakfast. You should plan on spending a rest day in your adventures in a hotel/motel room to rest and shower even do wash. Thank you for taking us along on your adventure my friend.🙏🏻 The images are just stunning! 👏🏻👏🏻 I need to order the Barra from you even though there are so many I like. You really need to do a book! Take care my friend.🙏🏻
Thanks for watching John. Yes I did have a few rest days in paid accommodation to do exactly what you suggested. However I have to go with the good weather conditions while I have them . .I can rest when it's raining ..!!!
Another great video and more great shots Richard, my jealousy streak is growing wider😂
Haha, well it's a great spot to shoot Nick that's for sure.
Wow!! What a stunning landscape! I'm totally with you as far as cooking is concerned: out of a packet and easy to clean up is definitely the way forward 🤣 The images were beautiful, too!! Thanks as always.
Haha, well my wife is a very good cook . .lucky for me ..!!!!
Hi Richard, wow, you did a great job blending the forground and milkyway shots! Can't wait to see your next adventure! Jerry
Thanks again for your great comments Jerry.

Thanks so much Paul. Yes I love viewing these locations from the sky . .a wonderful perspective.
Your road trip seems to go on forever! Fantastic storytelling, cooking and end results!

Loved the drone footage on this one Richard, and seeing you create such stunning shots there. St Helens and Binnalong Bay are always a favourite with me. Looking forward to your next location in beautiful Tassie.
Thanks as always for your lovely comments Laurel.
Really stunning Richard, maybe you should do a cookbook for night photography road trips. 🤣🤣
Haha, well that would be a very short edition David . .as you can see my skills lie elsewhere.
Those images are among my favorite of yours, Richard. They're fantastic!
Thanks so much Derek . .I hope you're going well.
Another awesome video Richard, what a beautiful spot and the images are amazing 👏
Thanks again for watching Dennis
Beautiful photos Richard, Tks. Very good video 👏
Thanks as always Mario
WOW, Richard those drone videos were just incredible - we don't have that kind of clear water here in Texas! :-) GREAT video!!!!!
Haha, well we don't have any water like that near where I live either Gary. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely stunning images Richard, such a beautiful area my wife stated this morning we need a Trip to Tazzy ! she's an ex Ausi ! Not great weather over here at the moment, strong wind, rain on and off and more snow but the odd good day, but alas not the nights ! Cheers and can't wait for the next installment !
Thanks as always for watching Royce. I think your wife is a clever lady ..!!!
Another great video with some amazing images. So looking forward to the next video, keep up the great videos, I sure do appreciate it.
And I very much appreciate you watching.
stunning captures Richard. Blending in fantastic. 👍
Thanks so much Chris
Another great video Richard, clear skies 🖖
Many thanks indeed for watching Gavin
I recognise those places you photographed from, glad you found them. There is a beautiful little bay at the end of the road called Honeymoon Bay near the Gardens. Steps to the beach are not visible in the turning circle a few houses there but well worth a look, stunning little beach and rocks with some orange lichen. So many beautiful spots in the area, try Cosy Corner South as well, you can camp near to some great rocks and a beautiful bay. Love your work.
Everywhere in that area is so beautiful Liz. Thanks as always for watching.
Top shelf mate, thankyou for taking us along
You're always welcome Phil
I love your free, loose spirit and I'm impressed that Tazmania is so accommodating to travelers such as you. Sadly, I don't see that in the US. I look forward to seeing more from your productive trip!
As a rule Australians are very friendly and accommodating people Andrea. Tasmania is such a wonderful place. . I could live there for sure.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I think I could too. The best vacation I ever had was to Australia. Amazing people!
Best part of Tasssie right there 😊
Thanks for looking my friend . .yes I agree.
Wow after the intro the drone footage of the Bay of Fires was spectacular Richard some epic scenes. The blue hour blends worked really well and you bagged some great images and the series just keeps getting better, what a road trip.
Yes it was a pretty full on trip Carl. Appreciate your support mate.
I do love your road trip videos Richard, stunning images as usual, glad it worked out well for you in the end. We play roulette with the weather here, lol
Thanks heaps Suzie. Yes it would be very familiar to you. Always appreciate your comments.
Enjoying the journey Richard, love the pics. such a very special place and so picturesque. well done :)
Thanks as always for watching Alan.
Sensational!!! Some of your most delicious shots ever - the music added to the sense of mystery, grandeur, and awe. Thank you!
Also, wild coincidence - at the beginning of the video, I was thinking about your work and wondering why you so seldomly use blue hour to capture your foregrounds. Thirty seconds later... you address that exact question! Wild! 😊
That sure is a coincidence Chris .. !! Thanks for watching.
Your captures are work of art!, Richard. As if on canvas. 👌👏👏
I think the landscape is so beautiful it really helps with the captures my friend.
What a Wonderfull landscape, ... and your images are fantastic as alway. WoW! Here in germany i can't do that because of the light pollution and the weather.
Yes I thank the Lord everyday for our lack of light pollution here in Australia . .thanks heaps for watching.
Love your journey, O how I wish....
Thanks so much Les. A few more Tassie episodes to come.
Great Video . I love the Series . The Story will go on. Cs and Regard from Germany . Thomas
Thanks as always for watching Thomas
Wow mate, just brilliant. I just watched this video on my projector and big screen and your images look amazing on it. Loving watching your trip. Great work mate.
Thanks heaps Brad mate. I should try the big screen one day myself...!!!!
So inspiring Richard! 🤩
You're very kind as always Lisa, thank you.
great images at a great location Richard
greetings from germany and thx for the reply 😛
Thanks my friend, always appreciate your comments.
Just bought a Move Shoot Move to be ready for the night skies and Milky Way returning to North East England. Hoping to get some great shots, inspired to embark on the the learning curve by your excellent images.
Thanks so much for watching. I hope you get some great shots.
I'm a big fan of your panoramas. I'd love to see you do a tutorial on how you blend your tracked pano sky with a pano foreground.
Yes that's something I'll get onto at some stage Brian.
Beautiful images ❤
Thank you so much for tuning in Kate, I really appreciate it.
Great shots!
Thanks again for watching.
Just awesome. I wish I’d seen this before the road trip I just did to Dartmoor in the UK - would have benefited from the blue-hour technique. I shall consider building that in in future when there’s just no other way of getting the ambient light look.
Thanks a lot for watching Nigel. There are all types of techniques to assist us.
Great shots, those food pack how much might have to pick up some for our trip over there. Can't wait lol van life 🤣
Thanks Jeff. Some of the meals are available in supermarkets here and so are pretty cheap. You can buy all sorts of freeze dried foods but often quite expensive.
Ive been watching your videos for a few years and I really appriciate your teaching. Could you take a challenge? Create a night scape image with gimp and the camera manufacturer software rather than photoshop / lightroom.
Thanks for your great support Steve. I don't know if I'd get the same quality results without using Adobe software . .but who knows.
Stunning backgrounds, the landscapes there are really lovely. I really love your use of the drone, it brings it all to life. One technical question, how do you sleep in your car. It always seems so full of gear ?
Thanks as always for watching David. I love using the drone in my videos. This video will explain all about how I sleep in the car. ua-cam.com/video/2XhC7GadlBw/v-deo.html
Outstanding images! Better all the time, as hard as that is to imagine! Always a great "escape" for me to watch your videos because it is easy to forget everything else! Couple of questions Richard - have you thought were you plan on shooting Perseid's meteor shower on 12-13 August? On your 12X pano images, was that three rows of 4 each? Also, loved your idea of shooting a light painted image when cloudy to show there are always options! Lastly, hope you do another post processing in the future of stitching your tracked sky images with foreground. Enjoy the rest of your trip!
Thanks heaps for watching Kerry. We don't get great results for the Perseid's so I usually don't bother. The 12 x pano was 2 rows of 6 in portrait orientation. I'll always try to find something to light paint if it's possible. I will get to do a pano editing video at some stage.
You should have shouted out. I live in St Helens and could've offered a shower, etc.
Never mind . .appreciate the offer.
Loving the road trip Richard! How are you attaching the jetboil to your tripod? Great idea! Cheers Si
I have a little tripod plate attached to the bottom of the gas canister. See this video at 3.07: ua-cam.com/video/ug7JplVxBBo/v-deo.html
@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks so much for the link Richard 👍🏻
You are so good with light painting you don’t need blue hour shot. Will blue hour foreground and Milky Way shot with same tripod location? What if you take a blue hour shot during blue hour and come back for Milky Way a few hours later? How will the blend process be, assuming you don’t have the same tripod location?
Thanks for watching. All of these foregrounds were shot a few hours before the milky way, and yes I did move the tripod. I didn't have any great issues with the blending as you can see.
What a a beautiful location!! BTW what makes you decide the Nikon Z6 or Z6ii? Just curious...
Thanks for watching John. I have 2 x Z6ii's and one h-alpha modified Z6. I use the modified camera to shoot tracked skies generally and the others for foregrounds and timelapses. Essentially the cameras are exactly the same.
❤
Hi Richard,
Another stunning series,
What caught my eye first, was the excellent exposure and how vivid the foreground was,
Question: Is it difficult to stitch sky panoramas ?
Is the puffer jacket the answer? And do you have to reduce layers whilst using the puffer jacket?
Sorry, too many questions already I guess,
Regards,
................... Gary
........................... AU
PS: Nearly there, except for lens warmers, battery pack, power leads , although most probably too old the master the skill :)
You're never too old Gary ..!!! The puffer jacket helps quite a lot during cold Tasmanian nights. It's not that difficult to stitch astro panos . .it all comes down to how well you shoot them in the first place. The foregrounds look good because I gave them plenty of exposure. A lot of night panoramas are just too dark and they are all grainy and noisy due to short shutter speeds.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Much appreciated Richard, thank you!
I'm enjoying following your trip through Tasmania. My compliments on not only sharing your knowledge with us, but you make the videos very entertaining. While I try to catch all your postings, I must have missed the one where you talked about using the Sky Safari 6 app with the star tracker mini. Would you please post the link to that video. Do you use the Pro or Plus version of Sky Safari? Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching Bradley. I'm using Sky Safari 6 Plus but I think it may have been updated to version 7. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/_5YdzcEIhks/v-deo.html
@@nightscapeimages.richard Thanks, Richard! Always so accommodating and prompt.
Beautiful images Richard. A question if I may, given you are using a lens with an f1.8 why do you use f2.8 for the sky? I would have thought that if you shot at f1.8 you could have used a lower ISO? Great video as usual
That's a good question David. As a general rule any lens will be sharper, especially in the corners when stopped down a bit. Because I have an f1.8 lens I have the flexibility to stop it down and still have a nice wide aperture of f2.2 or f2.8. If I was shooting with an f2.8 lens I don't have that option. There are occasions when I will shoot wide open at f1.8 and that's usually when it's a really dark foreground situation.
@@nightscapeimages.richard off course that makes total sense. Thank you for taking the time to explain.
Beautiful images once again, and love all your stories about your travels Richard. What camera do you use to shop your videos at night as there’s incredible detail in the skies behind you
Thanks as always Alasdair. I'm using the Sony A7s3 with Sony 24mm f1.4 lens for all my night videos. Nothing else comes close with high iso and low noise video performance.
@@nightscapeimages.richard it’s outstanding quality, really impressed with the footage you shoot as well as your images
@@amacmedia3221 Thanks my friend
🥰🥰😃
I also have found blending the horizontal line of the sea and the lighting and color of the sea in blue hour with the night sky is very hard to make it look natural. So if I do Astro seascape, I will never do blue hour for foreground 😅
Yes it can be a problem. I raised the white balance a lot when shooting these and then did specific editing of the blue water etc to make it match better.
OK OMG
Thanks for watching Leon.
Another awesome video Richard, can I ask what drone you are using and if you're using a tablet which one? I'm getting a DJI very soon to take with us when we are travelling and curious to see what you use. Absolutely stunning ariel shots and the astro, as always is beautiful..cheers
Thanks Terry. I'm currently using the Dji Air2S with the DJI Smart Controller. I hate using phones to control drones.
@@nightscapeimages.richard yeah ok, I'm looking at a dji 3 do you think the rc controller is the way to go??
I like it ... but it's expensive
@@nightscapeimages.richard cheers mate I appreciate the feedback
We are heading down to Tassie around the new moon 🌚 next month and hoping to get some good milky way shots around Stanley...fingers crossed may even fluke an Aurora .cheers Terry
