- The Ranger class in Dark and Darker is very strong. Here are some important things I discovered about the Ranger class during my time in the December Playtest.
What do you think? Best class in Dark and Darker?

W guides, enjoyed your fighter one as well. Keep it up mate
Cheers pal, soon we will both have fresh playtest gameplay to show off. You keep up the content as well!
Great Video Bud! Hope to see you in the dungeon.
Thank you, yes Feb 6th is fast approaching
@@WilsonsGame if you have space one time, let's link up
im so hyped for the next playtest
Nearly there, they threw a solo dungeon curveball at us too. We have a week to try all this...dam I'm going to barely scratch the surface of what I want to try out.
There are 2 things I think are contentious about the video. I think certain things have niches that might be overlooked. Specifically the ranged weapon expert and the survival bow for different reasons. I feel that for the most part 5% damage doesn't mean much but when you do have a purple bow or windlass that extra 5% adds up and might allow you to 1 shot the fighters and barbs as well as everyone else. I also don't know besides advanced hearing what you would use if you are using a crossbow setup.
For the survival bow, I think its incredibly useful if you have several highrolled gear that does the flat physical physical true damage. This specifically is build dependent and I specifically would run Quickfire and Quickshot with it as its a great combo for getting even quicker less reactable burst damage or just permaslowing 1 target. Again the second one uses a build that would also just be great on any bow but it still seems like there is a threshold where the survival bow goes from being entirely useless to an incredibly annoying plink machine.
What about running both survival and a long bow. I've since witnessed some crazy stuff with survival bow like you said.. it can be pretty menacing in the right set-up.
As a solo I very rarely get into purple setups. So that 5% isn't helping as much, but I agree it probably makes more sense than the hearing expert or just better in general on a decent longbow.
But Wilson, the ranger having campfires just means hunting rangers down so much more satisfying as a fighter! lol
True, catching people at a campfire is pretty dam satisfying!
@@WilsonsGame No no, I mean getting free campfires from them is awesome lol! Most rangers I find still have theirs on them when I bowl through them
I have one-shot so many people with multishot in just this last playtest. Highly underrated.
both are just so good for burst damage.. I like em both but overall quickshot seems to be everyone's preferred.
@WilsonsGame I played a lot of 3 stack games personally and always had a cleric with me, so I just took both since I didn't really need the healing. Multishot is great against meeles though. Both have their places.
Im surprised you did not even mention the pavise. Taking the pavise in a 3 man group will allow you to cheese almost all pve content. It will also allow you to block off corridors for other players as well as allow you to move in to a corridor that is being locked down by archers.
Yea, that thing keeps getting reworked too . Seems like an odd item in the game really
if you step on a trap thats inside a corpse you also cant disarm it because when you try , its just highlights the body that covers the trap.
Big ouuuufff
honestly I run multishot over quick shot because of its ability to one shot people. The quickshot is nice but it doesn't knock down that barb that is running you down
yep, in close it is really strong.. its also really easy to connect with.
Im not sure if you've tried out molotovs and lanterns, but if they have a ranger and you can't easily kill the trapped player, you can just toss a throwable at their feet dealing damage that should kill any class in 5-6seconds max. Or you can use them to give enough time to deploy a trap when you're running the trap expert.
yes, molotovs are actually unreal. Such closed quarters which makes them plus traps a very lethal combo.
at 0:45 i had the same issue while playing it keeps throwing me back while walking like i have lag do you know how can i solve this i dont want to have same problem in next game test
I didn't have this problem as much in this playtest. Last playtest it happened much more often. My big problem was crashes during barbs roar. Turned out to be an amd video card issues..
I think for balance a Ranger has to bring Arrows with him and can pick them back up.
this gets suggested a lot... I just don't want arrows on my fighter class too. Just make quickshot not give them a free reload or something. Some tweaks on the abilities would be helpful
hi man do you have some vids from ranger in pt5
sadly no, went all in on fighter and a bit of bard + barb
@@WilsonsGame oh ok thank you for answering i enjoy your content either way :)
If field rations were nerfed to 20hp per use and double the use time to make it more of a downtime heal, or just 2 uses, I'd still probably run it. I'd probably buff the campfire slightly and give the fast arrow skills a debuff on damage. Ranger is already the most survivable class of them all, and it still would be with a slight balance patch. Long range and downtime heals do a ton of work in this game, and aside from the cleric, other classes don't have that (aside from fighter with access to bows and second wind). I do like the balance and counterplays the classes have atm, barbarians are especially in a good place, although I'd like to see a slight buff to the fighter in terms of utility or dps options.
I'm always down for a fighter buff, my favorite class. Agree with what you said ranger is just equipped with so much survivability
why is +5 physical attack not considered good?
This was awhile ago and even still I don't understand how physical attack translates to damage. Physical power is an odd stat... Strength weapon or true dmg etc all just made more sense too me
Step trap - im stuck
My best runs I use quickshot and multishot if someone is in your face use multishot point blank into chest or head almost always insta kills, if you like field ration and need to run use the animation cancel of a ration and its the same speed as putting down weapon
wait so just pop ration.. but not actually use it. Or does the heal pop too?
@@WilsonsGame sadly it uses it but I mean you got 3 of them
When u have money to buy pot's going multishot it's insane...it cover's he's weakness against melee..
I got so many oneshot's against sneaky's rogue's xD
It can be awesome, quickshot is what 90% of the people are using right now tho. The burst damage on multishot is crazy.
I exclusively played Ranger for this most recent playtest and I found that a good Recurve Bow will almost always be better than a good Long Bow, but a white Long Bow will always be better than a white Recurve Bow. Using the Long Bow against a Barb or Fighter that just charges at you is almost always a death sentence if you're trying to turn around to hit a shot and continue kiting, especially if they know what they're doing and don't get hit by your shots as they close the distance. With the Recurve Bow, you not only have an additional arrow in your quiver, but you also take significantly less time to let an arrow loose than when using a Long Bow, which will reduce your move speed for less time and allow you to create/maintain your distance. The difference in damage dealt is negligible if you count number of shots to kill vs number of damage per arrow. Because the shots to kill is still the same for MOST engagements, it is strictly better to take a Recurve Bow vs a Long Bow for the attack speed and additional arrow in the quiver.
yep, but with quickshot/multishot you are hitting a bit harder with Longbow. I agree though, green recurves are really nice. This was during the last playtest too when longbows were all the rave... I saw a few more recurves out there this time.
Why is the 5% physical power bad? I understand that physical power is the worst damage buff, but damage is damage. I take it over the spear proficiency perk because I never find myself to be in situations where it would be game changing.
I haven't had a chance to fully test this, but my feeling is a 5% physical power increase likely isn't enough to make you kill someone in less arrows, or less swings. Currently testing any of this is very difficult, as you rarely get a test dummy, or have the same weapon by the time you get back to test it again. Just feels like such a minute amount.
5% power is fairly low
So something to consider. If your bow hits for 50 damage, which is basically a purple longbow, then you will only get 2.5 more damage from it. IF you get weapon damage increases to get the bow to 100 then it should only increase the damage by another 5.
Now at a base of 10 strength you're actually in a negative damage additive and getting a strength of 15 makes it zero out. Using a spear makes you go from 10 to 20 strength, changing the negative power to a positive change, so ontop of it being just a good reach weapon vs say a rapier, it also will scale better for damage. So if you want to run a melee weapon you add so much more damage to yourself switching to a spear.
@@Eseerrowez Yeah I forgot that part of perk. I've been running spears the whole playtest #5(or 6?). Even on my fighter.
OOH BTW @WilsonsGame Quick fire is one of the best abilities for ranger brother. You have to give it a try. For exmaple, if you use Quickfire just before using Quick shot, your 3 shots from quick shot will be insanely faster, also your following regular attacks will be faster too for a short while. For doing an insanely fast amount of burst damage with Quick fire + Quick shot, is one of the most satisfying things with ranger. AAND, even more if you use survival bow, it fires the 3 arrows like a machine gun!! TRY it bro!!
I never thought of this.. that would be a wild amount of dmg. Cheers I just might.
@@WilsonsGame heck yeah! Trust me when you see its effects, i think it will become your main skill along with quick shot. Really, field rations got absolutely nothing to do against quick fire!! Its really deadly when combined with quick shot! Have a good one mate! Also i hope i can group up with your ranger for some games! ;)
This is exactly what I do, glad to see someone else and me had the same idea 😎
Nice vid. I feel like field ration should heal over time like a health potion and not be an instant heal...
Yes, it is very quick, and 25hp is no joke. If any other class had this ability it would be a must pick ability on all of them really.
Yea but cleric is balanced lmao stfu
Not a ranger player, but a great guide nonetheless
I like to think of these as a glimpse into what your options are in each class. Im sure there are better more min max methods/info for both fighter and Ranger, but I'm just out here enjoying different things. Ranger is crazy strong, but can also be very fun/troll with the traps they have they ability to use.
There should be a limit to arrows, and a Quiver secondary 'weapon' to incentivize bow only gameplay with the ability to pick them up from the place they landed, Rangers already fuck me as the Wizard in 90% of scenarios, why do I have limited casts and they don't?
I am really surprised they haven't touched Ranger... I mean even just look at all the recent Cave Troll ranger cheese videos. Over half my runs in that dungeon are deaths to rangers. Last playtest they dominated as the best pve..and most players in the top 200 of any class. Idk I am somewhat confused by the recent Wizard nerf. Barb is also godlike with a purple felling axe. I see a lot of post and content around rangers being crazy good...yet not much has changed for them at all.
@@WilsonsGame As a level 20 Wizard main I have no problem with the Wizard nerfs, granted, I didn't see them as necessary, but I'd rather the developers nerf things instead of buff things, the worst thing that can happen to the game is power-creep, I'm not happy with the nerfs, I'm happy with the direction of the game.
About Ranger; Boy, he's a motherfucker, I brought 2 friends to play with me, and we were having a good time, until almost every run ended with a Ranger peppering us, we trying to find cover, and one of the big boys engaging us in bad positions "They need to fix Ranger or we need a ranger" is all I heard for the past several days, I tried my hardest to defend the game and and even state the weaknesses of Ranger, then I do a little research and I realize he has self-heal, footstep vision, the fastest movespeed, fastest and most precise, fastest ENDLESS projectiles, very solid melee weapons, 1-shot capability with triple arrow, and a godamn trap, claiming that his weakness is "being squishy" is a bad argument considering he and 4 other classes are also squishy.
I know exactly what they were going for; "Ranger is a low economy safe character that is easy to use, but you need to have good aim and positioning" but that's it, Playtest #4 is where people have good aim and positioning, now he's just low economy and easy to use compared to the rest of the roaster.
I'm still having a fucking blast with the game.
@@JustShotsForMeh The big problem like you said is that quickshot and the field ration are just plain amazing abilities. Free reload and crazy burst with a longbow. Agreed really enjoying it!
Feel like the logical balance to ranger is just to force us to buy arrows.
interesting Idea, but I think the devs said they don't want that type of style where buying or taking in arrows becomes a nuisance. My thoughts are they might just increase cooldowns/ remove the full reload mechanic or make it 2 shots instead of 3.
Ranger is the Scooby Doo Fred class lol
its crazy good, and I suspect with the upcoming solo dungeon more people are going to be realizing this.
I like that the ranger class is a little OP, and this is a barbarian speaking. I still beat most rangers, unless they have a spear, because im certain the spear literally only exists in the game to troll barbs. I dont necessarily have a problem with rangers OP, but I think they should have to buy their ammo. You can play the broken class as long as you dont mind having to go broke to sustain it.
I am sure in the future we will see some changes to this class, I don't think the Devs will want to see like 70% boss kill and the majority of high roller ranks dominated by one class. I think they stated they are not a fan of them having arrows as it becomes like a nuisance buy, or if you forget it cripples the class.
@@xPRODIGYxGAMER I agree with most of what you said.. each class has its positives/weaknesses which you mentioned. My point is, and you can crunch the numbers yourself in the discord..which I did. Rangers make up 31% of the High Roller leaderboard.. every other class is At 15% or below.. fighter being the lowest at 10% Season 2 of last playtest.
I did some high rollers myself and its a lot of rangers man. There is a reason for this and my opinion is that they are a much stronger class than most others.
high skill ceiling? its easy af
Some people have a hard time aiming, but I somewhat agree. Sometimes hitting sword swings feels harder. Multishot makes it quite simple when in close.
more importantly what is up with these bow animations with recurve and longbow? nobody would ever shoot a bow like that.
Yea, I actually thought the same thing... it looked very strange to me.. and I used to do a fair bit of archery growing up. I haven't done any digging to see if this is actually a thing or not though.
"I've tried really good ones, like blue ones"
I'd argue really good ones would be purple with great stats or legendary with good stats...
Yes, you are probably right, they are dam hard to find as no one is selling them really. I would like to try them more. However, I don't find there to be large base damage increases from blue to purple. Unless you find one with bonus stats. If that's what's required for it to be useful then I'd say it's not a great weapon.
I should have said I have tried "decent" ones.
@@WilsonsGame It doesn't matter, It's not important. I guess it depends on how much you plaed and all, but this last playtest i had 3 sets ( and a probably a couple more that I lost) that were all purple/legendary with decent or good stats for my class. I spent a lot of time farming for money and buying from the store, though.
@@ericmorneau8819 yea, it will be interesting if they keep stash size the same. Really doesn't allow you to have a lot of sets of gear at the moment. Kind of nice as it forces people to wear or sell what they have.
Tbh I doubt they will change ranger too much.
It's definitely not the best I've class it's just good VS bosses, general clearing is horrible.
But the Main reason forits high player base is in really late game if u wanna do bosses it allows alot of cheese but there are far more fighters in total.
But most importantly there is no alternative to ranger, if you wanna do alot of damage up close there are other classes to do so similarly.
The only other decent class at range is wizard which is also strong but wildly different due to the spell count, fire rate/cast speed.
And it's less consistent at range.
I think it's unfair for you to basically complain about any class to be too strong tho.
Everyone in the discord has their own pick for moaning bout x or y is op cuz of x or y.
It's ALWAYS cuz the player can't deal with "oh, triple shot does too much damage" ye, well shields exist.
"chain lightning deals waaay 2 much dmg" ye, split up a bit.
"the barb is one shorting me" get a tanky fighter,ir learn to block or keep your distance.
Of u wanna make videos bout what you learned you should try to not pick a side by saying you think ability x is really good cuz of this and that.
At this point I had played Barb, rogue , and Fighter.. Clicking on ranger as a solo player felt a heck of a lot easier because of all the kit options they have. Was just surprised as playing the Ranger felt way easier then swinging a 2h axe as barb with no meds or real utility of any kind.
you are right there are a lack of range options... but probably why fighter is popular too. Being able to take a bow.. I just felt as I was learning and playing ranger it made every other class feel more difficult to be successful with.
I also disagree that general clearing is terrible... just take one of the best close melee weapons (arming sword) or even better (spear) your high movement will make clearing mobs a breeze really.
@@WilsonsGame I'm not saying a ranger can't clear mobs.
But compared to cleric spells or fither/barb dmg and cleaves it's not prime.
Barb has really good utility in breaking doors and the fear on mobs is really really good.
And not having any healing is honestly your own fault, buy more meds and especially bandages, the archer gets a strong bandage on quick use thrice in a game with a (25sec?) cdr, it takes just a few second to use a green bandage.
You should be able to top off all the time.
Hell I don't even run rations all the time because quick fire works with triple shot to blow people up.
@@mikahoolwerff3563 starting out as barb with no heals isn't anyone's fault but the default kit you get...which is the game not me. Yes everything becomes more equal when everyone is level 20 with a decent inventory of loot/gear. However, as a solo player this was much easier to accomplish as a Ranger than a Barbarian..or fighter..or rogue. That's all I meant.
@@WilsonsGame if u surive litteraly one game you can afford all the heals you need.
if u wanted to argue for the very first game, ya id agree ranger is extremely busted as he gets campfires and rations.
but u cant say the ranger does better than barb cuz he gets heals while the barb gets non when getting other forms of healing post game one is really easy.
@@mikahoolwerff3563 I think you are underestimating how often a newer player or even a veteran is going to die as a solo. Solo Barb with entry level gear is probably one of the most difficult situations to be in. Spending 50g on meds each run is worth it.. untill you run into a couple bad lobbies and continuously lose said meds. On ranger you can spend that 50g on a bow and do very well without even buying meds. Or put down traps and escape fights etc etc the list goes on. I don't necessarily think they need major changes ... I'm just saying they are popular for reasons other than PVE cheese or simply doing range damage. I was witnessing high roller teams of rangers only. Quickshot then multishot to the face... Floors filled with traps.. it's a bit much at times.
Man loved this video! My main class is ranger too and i agree with a lot of stuff! But still i hope they dont make them weaker.
Yea, I hope they don't go too crazy on them. Not in a horrible spot they just need some tweaks to maybe the abilities. They should be a high dmg high skill class like some of the others .. it makes them rewarding to play. Right now they just have so many things going for them.
