I have an updated Longsword Masterclass video that came out today. ua-cam.com/video/mJsBZ5jveAA/v-deo.htmlsi=kJyXo3isyIDdwgy1 This is more a video about how to properly approach fights with every weapon rather than just how to parry every weapon. It shows both parries and trading attacks and spacing. Give it a watch if you want some updated gameplay compared to this older video! Thanks for the support!
First! Thank you for the information, for the longest time I thought parry was a time thing, not knowing all I had to do was block then follow up. Been getting some clean fights because of it. Much love!
Thanks! These are really solid tips, definitely will try to incorporate into my own games. It might be helpful to mark the sections of the video with the weapon you're talking about so people can look up the weapon they're struggling against.
You made me get in to longsword because of this video and i murdered my first game. For new players: after a succesful parry press right mouse button twice to riposte 2 times.
Man every goblin in that damn room was still alive! I was sitting at like 12 hp when you ran up there and yelled about everything being alive and escaped lmao. Glad we both gotta outta there! Was cool meeting up with someone that recognized me from the channel! Much love man
@@lubbylong3842 Lmao I figured when you got blasted by the archer walking around the corner. Saw the rocks fall while I was snagging the heal shrine and was like "Yes!! He got out!"
@@drewdubose2941Mainly for preserving momentum. For example as a wizard running away from a melee class, it’s better to jump and cast a spell to try to invis or retaliate against the pursuer because just running would slow you down for the duration of the cast. Not sure about fighter since I don’t play him much but things like ranged weapon reloads definitely slow you down, so it’s better to jump and then start the reload to preserve some speed.
as a LS enjoyer, im very thankful of this video, i spent a lot of time in playtest 4 just me and my buddy killing each other on the spawn to train LS blocks and riposte, yet, i learned a lot of things in your video! keep it up will keep my eye on you for now on!
Yeah man! This video shows how to blocking most attacks when they’re attacking your head and torso. You’ll come across some better players that will drag attacks to your feet that need you to anticipate differently but I’m working on an updated video for y’all showing more parrying in PvP for different attacks
I always use one trick against fast enemies, or enemies that try to flee in general, bring yourself a secondary that gives you only -10 movement speed, and get them straight on. Had killed multiple archers closing the distance, and not letting them run and shoot, because of using this method.
The accuracy of hitboxes in this game is what sets this game apart from others IMO. Such a masterful mechanic locked behind a single weapon... what was Ironstate thinking? It makes other weapons seem like a simple hack and slash with some semblance of spacing required. Longsword changed how I thought about melee in this game and it feels like the perfect handshake between mastering perfect spacing as well as managing the hitboxes of various weapons. Watching this video made me realise how high of a skill ceiling this weapon could have; taking knowledge of various weapons' swing styles into account could mean the difference between a successful parry and your death. This weapon alone unlocks a whole world of melee mechanics that so few of the playerbase would actually discover and enjoy the sophistication of. Long live the longsword.
It'd be cool to see them incorporate some other weapons in the future to have a riposte mechanic like this as well. Even if some of them are just a shove back or something after a block. I could see something like that working well on Bardiche or spear, though spear certainly doesn't need anymore power loaded into it xD. Longsword for life!
Watched a couple videos and jumped into goblin caves with just an 8gold long sword killed another fighter with full green dark plate blue spear and tons of healing items i dodged the first two and then parried the last one Thank you for the guide
Honestly? I don't know if I agree with you on the Rogue point. I've been playing a lot of Fighter, and almost every time, I've managed to get a parry off on a rogue with dagger. The double-headshot riposte is like a fly swatter. Rapier, I have yet to see. Any chance you could cover the Spear? Both Skeleton and players. I often struggle against thrusting weapons the most. And if you notice any consistencies, arrows too. I've pulled off a few projectile parries this playtest, and they actually seem somewhat viable if you get them right.
That's fair man. I know I've died to many rogues this test for whatever reason. I will be attempting to get parry clips on spear whenever I find them lol. Skeletons and players alike! I'll post an individual video on the player spear parries if I get them. Skeleton spearmen I plan to get some recordings and put into a video like this but for PvE
The general rule I started following was aim further left and up for almost all attacks and it worked very well in getting me to more consistently get the longsword into a proper parry position!
Thing to note is that the Crush ability of barbarian will absolutely destroy longsword parries. Especially with the bardiche... not many people run it atm since breaking chests is bugged though.
I really like this but I think it's not fully finished. I block but I still get hit even If I am lined up correctly. Looks like you need to have the swords collide on a certain point to block, I hope it gets better next playtest. I really love the longsword, The attack animation is weird but I just found out about how to parry with it. :)
Yeah it's hard to align perfectly since the animation for the parry sticks your arms so far out. So it's very easy to take damage at the same time as landing a parry. Thankfully, it's usually arm damage we take when it's both damage and a parry at once cuz of it, so at least a bit reduced damage.
Wanted to know if you were active in early access and have the same success parrying, or if you felt like they changed the "hitbox" of the longsword at all to where you need to adjust your approach to different weapons, loved the video!
Yeah I've been putting out parry updates now and as I get accustomed to the new feel. It absolutely seems different now but I'm attributing to the servers not being consistent for now. Have many many clips of taking damage several frames ahead of animations and it's hard to parry something that is just magically changing position between the wind up animation and the attack animation hittin before it shows lol
@@oggieson for me everything was insanely usefull and helpful.just dislike to play fighter with shield.pretty boring and slow gameplay. But after I saw your vid realized that wanna let second chance to this class and oh god it feels amazing and much more interesting then pdr and slayer

Hell yeah glad it helps! While blocking you're in a defensive stance. The riposte also counts as a defensive stance too! So you can get the benefit from the shield mastery perk during riposte! I made a perks/skills for longsword guide video the day before yesterday that might clear up any other questions you have. Or just feel free to keep asking anything on here!
Only the same things people have been saying with Mordhau and Chivalry games. But really those have so much more going on I don't see how they'll help too much except to get a fix for having a longsword on your screen lol. Still gonna end up playing Mordhau for the first time myself I think as I wait for Ironmace to get us back on here xD
Yup they sure didn't, but I've lost more to rogue's this playtest than every other by a large margin lol. So it was more of just a general observation of experience than anything that's all.
@@oggieson Don't get me wrong I have died to Rogues more than anyone else this playtest but there are very simple reasons for that. First and foremost there are just simply more Rogues this time around, it would be strange if another, less played class had a higher percentage of my deaths. Can I be a tank with the longsword as well? Because the longsword has that 1v2 potential that the arming sword doesnt and has more reach. My only concern is that move speed and the action speed gets sacrificed by focusing on tankier equipment, would this be a problem with the longsword?
Definitely not anymore. 2h fighter is genuinely in the worst spot it's ever been in the game because Ironmace nerfed pdr/projectile resist on plate and you simply don't have the stats to be a tank compared to sword and shield fighter. You end up with much lower value to the team imo
@@oggieson I decided to rethink just hours ago, I did 2H and i kept getting hurt alot, The shield is way too valuable right now to lose it, I did a sword and shield playstyle and to my surprise, I survived a minute long fight to the point and won it with my entire team alive, I had barb and rogue beating me up but I kept blocking their attacks and retaliate with two hits after counter attack against them to the point they had to back off because im hurting them significantly as well so I helped my team finished the left behind cleric who was using mace and shield, He was well equipped and also knew how to shield which is how he also kind of lasted long as well.
What stat do you prioritize? I would assume strength, but I see people running max damage reduction and making up any lack of damage with how long they can survive in a fight. Love the videos, thanks for making them :)
Strength and Agility are the main prios for most of my gear. Agility actually helps get us some attack speed and some movement speed which is incredibly useful when going full plate. Damage reduction on plate is also always acceptable though since we play in a more defensive manner with longsword and the damage reduction is incredibly beneficial when you get to the higher %. So getting anything with str/agi/all attributes or focusing around damage reduction rolls while playing around using riposte for damage.
Obviously very late, but I just wanted to say that you can actually parry arrows! Of course that would stupid hard to do in a real fight, but I just wanted to mention it. Therron Keen made a video showcasing it in one of the earlier playtests
You can block anything that's a projectile we ended up finding out. Includes a lot of spells as well! Not sure about the skelly mage fireball but player spells for sure.
How does this work? no one explains it once u block an attack does it automatically hit the player do I have to right click again? what's the mechanics to get it off?
Hard to do still. Longbow is a bit overtuned right now feels like. Gonna try and pool some clips together to help give a small video for approaching rangers, but if you have gear you can attempt to trade ranged fights with longbows or use hand axes along with sprint to help gap close into melee while dodging.
You have to right click after a successful block! They don't tell ya anywhere and lotta people usually try to left click. Right click once for the first attack and a second time or hold the first click to do the second riposte
@@oggieson As it should. Longsword shouldn't be a hard counter to an entire class due to a mechanical error with it not being impacted by crush. Barbarian has to waste an entire perk just to be able to knock doors down (which druid and warlock can too) it may as well work properly for its combat effect as well.
A few of these clips are from the previous playtest is all! I wanted to make sure I included the best clips I had to show the parry on different weapons so I pulled some from older videos to make sure the video quality was top notch in helping teach the parry! As for the buttons that's just how I programmed my mouse buttons so that I could make the game read them as usable so I could put my skills on my mouse rather than keyboard lol
Those are just keys I mapped to my mouse buttons so I could use them for skills lol. DaD wasn't liking the default mouse buttons assigned to the keys so had to swap them for something xD
Bruh I feel like after seeing you block that arming sword with the longsword @ 2:45 This game is just not ready to be played. That is such a deviation from what you would expect to happen visually it's practically useless to have the combat be that way. Only people who are able to break the game down into it's "invisible parts" are going to come across this and this isn't even what the dev's want I assume. I hope by the time this game becomes playable we see some HUGE improvements in hit-detection and collision because as it stand and with my experience through this last play test, the higher end parts of the skill part of the game are just silly. That being said, good guide and thanks for sharing this with the community. Hopefully some people watch it and come back better for it, but honestly it shouldn't be this "invisible" to block strikes in the game. It should be way more intuitive.
Yeah there's a quite a few clips across this playtest like this one that I have recorded. I chalked it up more to the server instability than anything. But we'll see what changes they make when the get us back in the dungeon.

@@oggieson Oh bet. I spend about 90% of my time playing league when I play video games. (I don't like playing D@D alone and the only friend I have that plays it works a lot so he doesn't get on much, so I don't play much.) If you ever wanna play League toss me an add. Ign is Destaati
How do you activate the riposte and does it work with a shield?
Does not work with a shield, no. But you right click again after a successful block with the longsword to initiate the riposte attacks.
Can we talk about your ability key binds
xD
Great vid thanks man
Thanks man! Hope it helps some!
Once you block an attack you have to right click again to initiate the riposte attacks.
@@oggieson thank you I'm guessing the keyword is riposte attack once I found out
And how you beat kiting ranger as longsword
Hard to do still. Longbow is a bit overtuned right now feels like. Gonna try and pool some clips together to help give a small video for approaching rangers, but if you have gear you can attempt to trade ranged fights with longbows or use hand axes along with sprint to help gap close into melee while dodging.
How do you do the riposte attack I can never get it to work
You have to right click after a successful block! They don't tell ya anywhere and lotta people usually try to left click. Right click once for the first attack and a second time or hold the first click to do the second riposte
@@oggieson thanks that will help lots
Fantastic video
Appreciate it buddy!
I can't find this game on steam?! How can i download it?
Sadly it's not on steam right now because of a DMCA claim. The dev team made the playtest available through a link in the games discord!
Crazy that crush on a barbarian should be a hard counter to longsword parrying, but the opposite is true.
This would legitimately make longsword unusable in 99/100 barb match ups
@@oggieson As it should. Longsword shouldn't be a hard counter to an entire class due to a mechanical error with it not being impacted by crush. Barbarian has to waste an entire perk just to be able to knock doors down (which druid and warlock can too) it may as well work properly for its combat effect as well.
Great vid!!!
Appreciate it man!
How you got the old UI brother?
And what is this Thumb Mouse Button involved at the old UI,is that some addon or something
explain please
A few of these clips are from the previous playtest is all! I wanted to make sure I included the best clips I had to show the parry on different weapons so I pulled some from older videos to make sure the video quality was top notch in helping teach the parry!
As for the buttons that's just how I programmed my mouse buttons so that I could make the game read them as usable so I could put my skills on my mouse rather than keyboard lol
@@oggieson Got it!Thanks
You can parry archer arrows if you're quick enough, and boy do they panic if you manage it.
Parried a few player arrows over the weekend lol. They always freak out for sure.
I have never seen guys who pick "home" and "Page down" keys for skills. why do you pick them?
But we'll see what changes they make when the get us back in the dungeon.
you're a god
Bro you should start a dojo series for the longsword, ur literally creating a subclass for fighter 😂
Lol! That could be a good idea! I'll see what I can come up with along those lines! Thanks brotha!
where to play dark and darker rn ?
You'll have to find the Dark and darker discord and look for a link to get the game from there!
thanks good vid
Gotcha man! Hope it helps!
love your voice
