Thanks so much for sharing this color, Marie! It looks super flattering on you! I did my own calculations with the color ratio for a smaller batch, and used my own lipstick formulation and I'm in love! You're forever my favorite DIYer!
❤️ I'm so thrilled to hear it! Thanks for DIYing with me, and happy making :)
The city I live in collects compost every week. I compost paper towel, toilet paper rolls, cotton balls, etc... The addition of paper towel will usually speed up the composting process, much like dead leaves.
My city FINALLY started doing this over the summer, and it is AMAZING! All my paper towels, fruit peels, etc. go in there and it's amazeballs.
Wow, that's a very detailed and scientifically explained tutorial 😍😍
Thanks so much! Happy making :)
Lovely color! I have the red/blue iron oxide from TKB and love it! I use it in lip colors and blush. The most effective way I have found at removing oils and waxes from melting containers is to first swab it out with a silicone spatula, then wipe with paper towels, followed by wash with good detergent lol. It is a process! But is worth it rather than wetting and trying to wash out all the excess goo in the sink! Love it!
That's exactly what I do! Usually, at least, lol. That's where those beautiful spatulas come in extra-super handy. I once taught a DIY lipstick workshop and I had to do all the dishes... LORDY. I nearly had a fit. I had not discovered this method yet and I was nearly in rage blackout territory by the time I cleaned out all 80 tiny glass prep cups!
I have to admit, when I first realized you were making videos this is the one I was hoping for! I've been dying to follow one of your lipstick recipes for maybe a year or so but have been too scared. :-o Hopefully I'll get this going soon! Thanks for getting into UA-cam! :D
Thanks, Lauren! I'm planning on doing more cosmetic technique videos when the book is out so there's a sort of visual guide for the book recipes, too ;)
You might be my favorite Canadian in the world
What?! Over Justin Bieber?! 😱😂
Humblebee & Me marie so funny 🤣
Beautiful color.. love it.. I agree using paper towels is more practical . Not sure would like all that down the drain.
Thanks! And yes, nobody wants to call a plumber because they have a pound of lipstick down their drain :P
OMG This video helped me so much!! Is it possible to pour it while its still hot so you could get all the product and not waste it? Thank you so much marie! ❤❤❤
love your videos, and your slogan "stubbornly DIY"
Thanks so much! :D
So, I have a few questions. 1. What is the difference between the percentages/metrics used for Pigments in a lip stick v.s a lip tint? Let's say I wanted this color, how much would I need to divide the color recipe to get a tint and not a lipstick? 2. How do you know how much color you want to use to create a lip tint? Is there a standard amount? 3. I know you'll probably have this in your book, but how would one know what colors to mix together to get a specific color? lol or will I have to wait? I'm only interested in making tints.
Honestly, that's s whole lot of "it depends". How much do you apply? How do you define a tint vs lipstick? The book has loads of colour blends and info on both lipsticks and tints. In my experience, blending colours is part colour theory and part actual doing; you can know that red + blue = purple, but the right red (oxide vs carmine) and other ingredients (titanium dioxide?) will seriously impact the end colour you'll get. I probably made 50 different lipstick shades for the book, and constantly surprised myself with what I got vs. what I thought I'd get. So... yeah. It depends LOL. Just experiment! Take notes! You'll figure out something you love and have fun in the process :)
Thank you!
If I were to make up a larger batch of this base melted on direct heat to incorporate the magnesium stearate, would I be able to re-melt small portions of it via water bath? Or would the magnesium stearate separate / not melt.... ? (does that make sense?) I was thinking about making up a larger batch of base then being able to melt single batch volumes in a small glass bowl for incorporating pigments... any thoughts would be much appreciated!
That's exactly how I do it in my book! Works a treat ;) humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/
You once said that pigments couls be dispersed using a coffee grinder. Any video about that? Tks
Pretty color!
Thanks, Pam :)
Love your tips! Can't wait to try it.
How long did the carmine lip stain last on your lips? This color is also pretty
Sooo pretty! :-D I use a different method and I'm wondering if you've ever tried this way: I get everything melted, add the colours, give it a good stir, then walk away. Once it's cooled but not hardened, I mix until there are no streaks. Then I gently reheat and pour. It seems to take a lot less time than mixing while everything is melted and the colours seem to be incorporated well, but I would love to hear if you have any thoughts on possible pitfalls of the different method! 💜
Your method sounds great if the base will allow for it! I find my lipstick bases (perhaps not this one, but the ones in my book) are so firm that there is no such thing as a cool phase that allows for stirring. If it's cool, it's solid :P
What about all the color along the inside of the cap? Shouldn't you clean off the cap area before you cap it?
This may be a stupid question, but could you used a piping bag to fill the tubes?
Hey Marie i dont see the link for the washing powder you mentioned
I use rubbing alcohol then paper towels that seems to work good .
Good call! Rubbing alcohol is so darn useful :)
Can you use a whisk?
What if you dispersed the blue into the oils as they melted to get it blended easier? then add the red iron oxide and titanium dioxide after? Just wondering if that would work. Looking for magnesium sterate closer now lol
That would likely help! I often develop recipes in much smaller quantities (where the pigment blending is less of a problem) and then scale them up so my readers don't need a scale that's accurate to 0.01g, so if you have a super precise scale you could also try scaling this recipe down quite a bit, and that'll help :)
good job messy tfs
why not melt the magnesium stearate with safflower oil first, then drop the butters in so you don't kill the benefits of the butters?
Magnesium stearate melts at 88°C. The smoke point of cocoa butter is 188°C, and for shea butter it's 233°C. We're not getting anywhere close to hot enough to damage those butters :)
I actually full with a pipette. It takes a bit longer but there is less mess and less waste. ;)
Hmm. Interesting. Your pipettes must be different from mine, 'cause that would definitely not result in less waste with the ones I have!
Thanks for sharing! Are these all natural ingredients? Thanks
www.humblebeeandme.com/lets-talk-natural/
Marie what a nice color! but I was so sorry to see all the waste...
You are more than welcome to come over and clean up after me if my way makes you sad haha ;)
Humblebee & Me lol!!! you are just perfect in every way! lol i definitely do understand why you did that. i hope my comment doesnt seem like it was coming at you for waste. i promise i wasnt!
Humblebee & Me Why are You being rude ? She's right, their is so much waste. You could put the rest in another tube.
It is okay to put a preservatives in lipstick?
If it's lip safe, sure, but there's typically no reason to. If there's no water in the product and it isn't going to be contaminated with water it doesn't require a preservative.
thank you very for your reply madam...
Pls make a video on how to make liquid lipstick
Lovely
From where I can get the containers plz
Okay, I like this one. Still not mauve enough for this pale lady...you'd look tan next to me. lol. Plus I love the idea of lipsticks for gifts. I hate paying big bucks for lipstick and use it barely. We need a nude shade too. 😘 I laughed during the cleaning. I kept waiting to hear my cranky words when cleaning pans. 😎💄
I suggest add more ultra marine
Thanks for the video. Question: Can you mix with a blender ?
I really, really wouldn’t. It’s a small quantity, most of it would solidify on the sides of the blender and it would make a huge mess and you’d lose most of the product to the blender.
How to calculate/set up the proportion of making lipsticks? Any rules? For example, I want to make 30g of matte lipstick. What is the proportion of oil:butter:wax?
It's really not that simple; there are SO many variables in making cosmetics. Adhesion, slip, tack, texture, consistency, melting point, pigmentation-every single one of those things is impacted by each ingredient you use, and the amounts of it you use. I'd recommend purchasing my book, Make it Up (www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/). It's filled with carefully (obsessively!) developed makeup recipes, and the lip paint is an amazing matte lipstick!
I have been scratching my head with a lingering question since many days now. I need to know what natural color I can use for lip balms, lotions, body Butters and cleansers. I use iron oxide for soaps but then that's it. I have tried many times to use iron oxide in my lip balms with various recipes, but nothing worked with red iron oxide. I can see that it blends well only in Glycerine but even where I've used Glycerine, the formulation failed miserably. Please guide me as to what natural colors I should use for the above mentioned formulations. Thanks
Hey Supreet! I think you'd enjoy my book, Make it Up: The Essential Guide to DIY Makeup and Skin Care ❤️ It has tons of cosmetic formulations + teaches how to incorporate oxides into lip colours without glycerin. Happy making!
Please please , show us how to make liquid matte lipstick for business , i follow your recipes
I am such a hoarder with my containers!!! lol ive got a designated hutch with all kinds of big and little jars and tins and bottles. but my favorites that i have a hard time giving away are my little lipstick an balm jars.lol Also, being that ive only been able to buy a small amount of carmine, since hub thinks its far too expensive for a powder to be buying all the time i absolutely cringed when i watched you wipe all of that beautiful red away.:( i was like "wait! no! ill take it! ill give that sweet little glop a home!.." lol i am just a huge fan of carmine, yet limited on the amount i can get at a time. (unless i sneak and order some like i did last night) lol.
Don't worry, no carmine was harmed in this video-no carmine was even used, lol. This one is just oxides, which are mucho cheaper!
Also, as an FYI: UA-cam comments are kind of dumb, so when you reply to other people's comments your comment gets buried way down with the original one, which makes it really hard to find. I know I got a bunch of notifications from you, but this is the only comment from you I can find right now. So, if you want a reply from me rather than whoever you are replying to, making a new parent comment means I'll actually be able to find it!
Humblebee & Me lol i forget that i comment on so many different veideos. i will be watching one and get excited to ask a question and comment w/o thinking.lol im so sorry!! and i think i got confused with the carmine part because i was just watching your lipstain video. i feel so ditsy right now.lol also, some of my comments are just me commenting to others. so dont worry about having to reply to all my comments lol i feel so bad now. i will try to keep my questions to one post and take your advice on makong a new comment instead of replying on old ones. i really do try to do my research before asking you. i always go to and look thru your blog first and sometimes i have a hard time finding anything.
Could I add more bees wax or some stearic acid or cetyl alcohol to make it harder to be able to mold it
You can try it, but in my experience it's not quite that simple (though it does depend on the mould). Happy making!
hey beautiful
this is the first time I'm seeing magnesium stearate powder in DIY. so hard work to make a lipstick!
the thing is the medium dose of it is 1000mg/kg ! could you please explain why did you used much more?
thank you in advance
In cosmetics, maximum usage rates are expressed as percentages. "1000mg/kg" sounds like a maximum dose for the body-usually when eating something? So that would likely be 1000mg per kilo of body weight? You can learn more about it in cosmetics from CosmeticsInfo.org, but here is a relevant passage: "The CIR Expert Panel reviewed acute oral studies indicating that the Stearate salts were practically nontoxic, and had a low potential for acute dermal toxicity. Skin irritation studies demonstrated that Stearates were only minimal to slight irritants at high concentrations." You can learn more about what it does in cosmetics in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/).
@@HumblebeeAndMe thank you SO much for giving me your time. I am about to read links you gave me. I'm learning a lot in your website. I wish you best. please wish me luck. i'm still learning and I hope I could run my own business
what can be the alternative of shea butter? can i just use 11g of cocoa butter? or can i use coconut oil instead of shea butter?

Hi Marie, you said mango butter in the video and in the recipe is shea butter. So which one is it.? Thanks
Whoops! It's shea butter, though either would work. When in doubt, go with the written version :)
thanks :)
Hello Marie!
I recived your book 2 days ago!
Is there any way to make homemade magnesium sterate?
I can't find it and i make my own sodium lactate...
Thnxs!
Not that I know of... maybe if you had a lab and a chemistry degree.
i;m allergic to a lot of things in lipstick and after some personal experimentation making my own, I've found that beeswax from different sources can sometimes be an issue for allergy sensitive individuals.. do you have any experience with the "synthetic beeswax" wax alternatives?
Hmm. Refined beeswax might be the way to go for you. I've worked with almond wax and olive wax, and both are far too soft to work well for beeswax. I've heard soy wax can be a good alternative, but I haven't worked with it yet :)
Beeswax is from the bees. If your allergic to it theres a couple alternatives. Vegan waxes such as calendilla wax, or carnuba wax...i love more calendilla wax and incorporate them in my organic vegan lip gloss...
Hi..can u pls suggest a vegan alternative to magnesium sterate
Magnesium stearate is vegan. It has the potential not to be, but I have never seen a non-vegan version for sale. I recommend confirming with your supplier.
thank you but can i just natural colouring like red grape seed powder without those oxice and tintanium. I tried it with that and beewax shea butter and jojoba oil, it turns out glossy but not much colour, it looks like more a lip balm than lip stick, how do i improve. thanks
Sadly not; the reason you aren't getting colour from those things is because they are very weak colourants. You need proper, potent pigments like oxides to get noticeable colour for cosmetics.
Hi mam I want to say that is there any thing for bidy darkness actually I have a wierd kind of darkness this not my natural skin It just due to hard water
If you think it's due to hard water, perhaps a water softener? That said, I have never ever heard of hard water darkening skin; where I live the water is very hard.
Mam can u suggest why could I do for this problem
Very good,i relly want to buy your book,im live in hong kong ,idont know how to buy it😢😢😢😢
I've got lots of links to places to buy it here: www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/ :)
Are these chemicals good to use?

:)
It's mor oily why ? I tried it
Use makeup remover wipes to wipe down your tools
Are those colors natural material?
They are accepted in natural formulation, yes, but they legally must be synthesized for safety. I have discussed this more in this post: www.humblebeeandme.com/lets-talk-natural/. Happy making!
The tubes need a tiny funnel.
Can i use red mica + titanium dioxide only?
Not really-micas are very weak compared to oxides. Check out this video to see what I mean: ua-cam.com/video/4nH5lx0pDbI/v-deo.html. You can certainly try it, but I suspect you will end up with a very pastel-y final product!
I've read that iron oxide contains lead. is it still safe to use on our cosmetics?
Here are the FDA guidelines on cosmetic grade iron oxides: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?c=ecfr&SID=d1e893bdb7eb4f21dc0d6979702c7372&rgn=div6&view=text&node=21:1.0.1.1.27.3&idno=21#se21.1.73_12250. The requirements for lead are "Lead (as Pb), not more than 10 parts per million"-an extremely low (and safe) level. Heavy metal content is why iron oxides for cosmetic use are synthesized rather than "wild harvested" :)
Do you sell your products?
Hey! You'll find the answer to your question in my FAQ on my website at www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/do-you-sell-anything-you-make/ 😊Happy making!
hi.can we add flavour oil in Lipstick??
Yes; make sure you're following supplier recommendations :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe thank you for reply. they said add fragrance at 42° temperature but Lipstick get hard at this temperature.... i think i should quit fragrance 😭
would it be better to use one of those "latte blender"(i have no idea what is the name of that thing) like the one you used on a how to make lotion video? or it would set the mixture too fast?
also, if you would be so kind, can you tell me what do you think about using vegetable based coloring for products like these lipstick?
thank you very much, and also congratulations, your videos are very informative and well put together, i wish you lots of luck and success!
Definitely not-we need a smooshing/smearing action to blend in the pigments, and we don't want to whip a bunch of air into the lipstick. Plant derived colourants don't generally work as they are quite impotent and usually water soluble; read this for more info: www.humblebeeandme.com/quick-guide-colourants/
How do you clean those lipstick tubes?
You don't-they're less than 20 cents a piece, just recycle them when they're empty. And, if you are getting your packaging from a reputable supplier, you can assume they are clean on arrival :)
You should have used alcohol on the paper towels it will make clean up easier. I also put alcohol in my pan to soak for about 5 minutes then I was with ease.
Thanks for the tip!
I am using the same ingredients but my lipstick is becoming very oily and I can feel small particles of iron oxide in it.
If it's much hotter where you live that would probably explain the oiliness-I'm in Canada, so this recipe was made for weather around 20°C. Is your iron oxide cosmetic grade? Was it finely ground before you added it? It is insoluble, so whatever the particle size is at the time of adding it will be the particle size in the end product.
@@HumblebeeAndMe I am from India can I reduce oil quantity as it is hoter here. My iron oxide is cosmetic safe.
Very cool color however it's not a black plumb shade. That's a dark neutral shade but not a black plumb! Not even in the realm of black plumb
Alcohol alcohol alcohol
I have made matte lip color once and WOW what a mess
Reminds me a little bit of clinique black honey...a little...
