I've been propagating java fern in a covered plastic tub. I place the cuttings on about 2 inches of soil without burying the rhizome.
With this method they have grown into the highest quality java fern I have ever had.
With that said, I don't understand why so many people say they almost exclusively take in nutrients through the water column and won't survive otherwise.

using aquasky lighting. Is having the Blue, Red and Green on 100% and white at 5% for 8 hours good? What is the best mix of light intensity that have minimal algae growth?

I have always loved java fern, but not had great success with it over the years. As my tap water is very hard, have been recently softening it with rainwater which does seem to be of benefit to it, and overall the whole tanks health.

My Java fern keeps going having leaves brown though (but other leaves keep growing out to nice green colour, but eventually they go brown and I have to snip them) Is this normal?

It sounds as if you may have a nutrient deficiency in your aquarium! We recommend testing your water to see what it's lacking, so you know what to add! 👌

Java Fern is not an aquatic plant. All ferns are terrestrial aquarium plants.
Java Fern is farmed on land in commercial nurseries.
Commercial nurseries can only grow java fern on land instead underwater.
In the wild Java Fern can survive underwater for a short period when periodically flooded during the rainy season.
For most of the year they grow on the water’s edge, either with their roots in water or moist soil.
Forcing Java Fern plants to live underwater all the time their leaves will be infested with algae.
In an aquarium setting Java Fern gets stunted with algae.
Terrestrial Java Fern has no long term success living underwater all the time because is not an aquatic plant.

@@fluval Thank you! Amazon Sword, Elodea, baby tears or short grass-like plants that will grow slowly/moderately slow in the foreground, plusses and minuses of these and any grass-like plant that will give some motion to the scene. I'd like my little corydora to be as happy as possible. I have a 20 long tank, so it's not tall, but easier for a five foot tall person to maintain.
