I know this video is nearly ancient; but, I love the large planted tank, behind you. The one that looks like a garden, with an overhead trellis. Just beautiful!
My leaves seem to always just turn black really, still have a lot of green leaves and new growth but some of the older, larger leaves are mostly black and it’s not due to new plants propagating. What’s going on with it? I fertilise and have decent lighting
I bought a java fern my first plant some reason the leaves are turning tan and fading any ad advice I have flourish advance CO2 Booster on hand please help
Thanks for the info! If one of the leaves comes off but still has juveniles on it and the base of the stem looks dead and dried up should you cut it at the stem so leaf will stay alive and float untill the young can be propagate?
Thx for the video, but theres a so called java fern disease, where the java ferns gets black from nothing. Do you know what it does to make them to turn into black and rottening? Some kind of lack of nutrients? Too much light? Warm season?
Would java fern do well with albino bristlenose plecos? I'm still researching what would be best for my tank, and looking into plants that can be attached to the wood and coconut shells I currently have in my tank.
Thanks jacob. I was worried about my plants getting damaged and I didn't know what was going on if my plant was melting or what. I've got roots coming with the new leafs.
Thanks for the insight I have tons of new babies on leaves & I am trying to build my plants a little at a time work in progress. I am using flourish products without co2. Some advise on which chemicals to use in helping give nutrients to them please. Also have amazon swords & anibus plants in the tank. Thanks
.i have some java ferns here. They were going good, giving birth to plantlets and etc. But suddenly, they got black. Leaves got rotten. If i act quickly, i can romove the rotten leaves and new ones grows. If i take time to act, i lose the plant. My questions are: how to avoid this? Java fern does not support heat? Or doesnt support strong lights (my light is not so strong)? Lacks of nutrients? Long photoperiods? How to avoid the so called java fern disease ? i read about on the internet but ppl say its lacks of nitrogen or lacks of potassium, but i dont see a real reason about it. I divided the tank in two zones: light zone and shadow zone (just indirect light), the ferns are on the shadow zone and yes the plant is not rottening anymore, but is not giving many plantlets as before..
Also, if your going to try leaving it long enough to latch onto the substrate - you have to bury the roots, but leave the rhizomes above the soil-surface - like planting german iris.
I have a 40litre tank with six Minnows and two Amano Shrimp. I had Java moss but I had to remove it due to its growth on the tank walls. I was wondering if java fern can work with the fish I have.
I was wondering Jacob, would it be correct to say that having Anubias and Java Fern in the fish tank on drift wood/rocks would greatly reduce the Nitrates as compared to just having plants rooted in the substrate? Thank you for your time.
+Watch it i believe the best plants that remove nitrates from the aquarium at an above average rate would be floating plants that are able to use the c02 above water. duckweed, frogbit, water wister/sprite, anacharis, hornwort, etc.
Contrary to what you said, it seems like they turn lighter with *more* light. Like they are ditching clorophil...? Idk But if you are sure about the light I will add a grow bulb..I wish I could get my greens to darken 😢
Thank you so much for such clear, comprehensive information! You are my go to for all things aquarium. I enjoy your laid back, easy going, endearing personality. KEEP THOSE VIDEOS COMING!! :-)
I bought some online the other day and all the leaves were in singles with small bits of rhizome and I was wondering if I should plant them in a group or I could spread them around and they'd grow into their own large bunches of leaves?
Contrary to my java fern.. I bought it as a large piece.. Then it slowly died.. Maybe because it has been grown immersed.. Lost all the big leaves and left with small new leaves.. Can it be grown faster? Im a bit impatient lol.
I read that when you first set up a planted aquarium its a good idea to drain the tank and let the roots grow with a low water line to stop the plant from floating, is this a good idea?
I have a java fern and all the leaves are black with no new growth, it’s been like this since I bought it (2months) what should I do to help it produce new growth?
Here’s a question I cannot find an answer to. Lighting for java fern. Can I grow java fern with a cheap fluorescent bulb? The bulb I have is not meant for plants but is pretty bright. Can I grow java fern?
Hey Jacob. Ever dealt with Java Fern melt? Not much info about it is seen in the internet but a few hobbyists have been facing this problem. The leaves progressively turn into brown from the rhizome until the the whole leaf is semi-transparent brown and dead.
Great video, because I am a beginner , and watched your video, I have purchased some Java Fern, and tied then to drift wood, but i have noticed the leaves have brown spots, I am using flourish Excel, am I doing anything wrong ???
Hi, I have Java Fern Trident and it is melting and becoming black. Can you help? rest of the plants are OK except bucephalandra Green wavy and MicrsorumTrident melting!
My Java Fern doesn't grow tall, it's only 1 inches. How can I make it grow taller? Should I use some root tabs? Should I use Flourish liquid iron, I don't have the Flourish potassium. Is it potassium defiencient? I also have an Anubias plant, and some of the leaves are yellow on the tips, and others have a dark green looking algea - although, it is just two or three of the leaves. I have a 15 gallon tank with three Pristella tetra a bristlenosepleco and lots of ramsnails. I also get black spots on my Java Fern leaves some of the leaves have come off on the edges. I do get lots of baby java ferns flooding around. How do I make these plants grow? Thanks for any advice you have.
I have an issue where the leaves turn translucent brown the must fall of the rhizome, which remains firm and not rotting. do you know what could possibly be wrong?
I have the Fluval edge and I currently have Amazon swords, but their leaves seem really big for this tank. Will Java fern work better? Or do you have a better suggestion that I can use as a BG/Mid plant. I like the sword type.
Java Fern in a 6 gallon aquarium with one betta fish and no substrate. HOB filter with only biological and mechanical filtration. Java Fern free floating. WC once per week, approx 20%. Should I add fertilizer to the water column? If so, what brand?
Hi my java fern has gone brown and transparent.. and the leaves are easily pulled off the rhizome .. isit dieing or just adapting to the tank because its only been in a month
Hi, I realize this is an old video. But can you please let us know something about the tank behind you in this video. What's that plant on the top, has it been glued or is it floating. Thanks in advance jacob.....
I have had Java Fern in my tank for the last two years and altho it has spread a bit it's leaves don't grow longer than 2-3 inches, I also had problems growing Anubias (the leave of my anubias would not grow big. The only plants that have done very well in my tank are Java moss and Crypt, any reason my Java Ferns are so sad?
It's supposed to be easy but somehow, I'm killing all my java fern all the time. I normally just use them for breeding my bettas. Water is just tap water (conditioned of course) and I only have bettas in the breeding tanks. I only use it during breeding. Now, I add aquarium salt for preventions (1tbsp to 5 gallons). Is that what is affecting it? They just wilt away--turn brown at tips an then deteriorate. Is it the salt or something else I may be doing? Thx!
I got a question so I use Eco Complete substrate and I kinda wanted to do soil I guess I'll do that in the future I don't wanna tear my setup down, although if I do use soil do people cap it with Substrate or sand and or just leave the soil what's ur take on a better way for plant growth ? Perhaps maybe a video you can make out of my question. Anyway thank you Love your vids bro
DMAN D No not duckweed. Just a bunch of plants. This week was plant inspection, so I uproot all my plants, inspect them for quality, toss out any dead ones or diagnose any problem plants. As usual this week was an A+ no issues. Thanks for watching :)
I didnt bury my java fern into substrate, still it melted. I have only guppies, i suspect that my vallisneria gigantea made a big shadow to them, or i didnt make regular water changes. Can you help me about this case?
Very informative and helpful video delivered in a very watchable and modern format unlike many fish channels which often use over exaggeration, shakey camera quality and grunge rock backing music. Got yourself a new sub :)
My java fern is turning brown and black but it is still growing new baby java fern on the tips of the leaves. Im using no ferts, no co2 but my cfl light is on 9 hrs a day. Any help?
Hi Jacob, I recently bought some small Trident java fern as said by the seller. But when I got it in my hand I realised the leaves are not lobed at all (looks like mini java fern), well I only saw one leaf with only 1 lobe (2 leaves on 1 strand). So i got back to the seller which they explained that mine is immature and not yet lobed, so do you think they are right? or am i just being scammed?
I wasn't sure about those black spots either, so thank you for clarifying that. Thanks for sharing such a great video with us, its always such a pleasure to see you🐠🍃🐡I love your tanks, they're so pretty filled with life and color. I have fern but every time I see it on the internet it looks brighter and in bunches mine is darker but it never grow extra leaves it's not dying and I know it's alive because smaller plants are growing from it but I don't understand why it's not growing anymore leaves
Omg I've used the website so many times as a resource and only just stumbled across these videos and just now put 2 + 2 together and realized this is him!!! I'm irrationally excited about this, lol.

Do I need to -or should I prune the leaves somehow? they have reached the top of my tank and sort of float at the top.
Can we grow nucifera lotus plant in planted aquarium.. I am trying out any way..!!
Thx for the video, but theres a so called java fern disease, where the java ferns gets black from nothing. Do you know what it does to make them to turn into black and rottening? Some kind of lack of nutrients? Too much light? Warm season?

Great video. I'm a beginner and the end of your video is why I got Java Fern in the first place. Learned a lot from watching this.

Can you plant have fern in substrate?
No attach it to wood or stone
.i have some java ferns here. They were going good, giving birth to plantlets and etc. But suddenly, they got black. Leaves got rotten. Do i need to tie it on Driftwood or can i directly dig it on the substrate?
Tie it on a pebble or driftwood the roots are not supposed to be buried cos they'll die.
Great detailed video. Is it best to attach a single Java fern rhizome to something or can you tie multiple rhizomes together and then attach it?
Good information. Thanks.
Other than anubius and java farn what are the other plants can go with African cichlid.
I was wondering Jacob, would it be correct to say that having Anubias and Java Fern in the fish tank on drift wood/rocks would greatly reduce the Nitrates as compared to just having plants rooted in the substrate? Thank you for your time.
+Watch it Based on my opinion no, I don't think that's the case. But I can't say for sure. Thanks for watching.
+Watch it i believe the best plants that remove nitrates from the aquarium at an above average rate would be floating plants that are able to use the c02 above water. duckweed, frogbit, water wister/sprite, anacharis, hornwort, etc.
How on earth then am I killing the poor thing? I just keeps loosing leaves and no new ones are coming back. It's just hanging on.
MysShadowdragon same here
MysShadowdragon either lights too bright or not enough nutrients
MysShadowdragon do you have it attached to rocks or wood..java hates it's roots shoved in gravel
@@kevinbrislawn5918 was just about to say that. I've had mine in the gravel and it wasnt doing great. Everyone was telling me to uproot it.
Same mine too! It's almost browning... Maybe my light isnt bright enough or I need plant nutrients?
So these cant go in substrate at all? Does the rhizome get nutrients from the water column only?
Meg Ryan no they can't go in substrate as that would cause the roots to rot just place em on substrate without burying or tie em to driftwood or rock
Contrary to what you said, it seems like they turn lighter with *more* light. Like they are ditching clorophil...? Idk
But if you are sure about the light I will add a grow bulb..I wish I could get my greens to darken 😢
Btw your javas look great. Great job
How about adding “trimming & maintenance” commentary?

Stacy Medina yes he's not loud and obnoxious like that other guys channel!!

These vids are great! always great to go back to and see I've like it about 5 year ago ahaha
My Java been is growing baby's but on the brown leaves I'm not entirely sure what to do with it
How long does it take to grow? Great video, I'm going to purchase some plants from you.
Hi Jacob, nice vids! a canister filter question: what is going on the bottom first of the canister, a spons or substrate?thanks!
I read that when you first set up a planted aquarium its a good idea to drain the tank and let the roots grow with a low water line to stop the plant from floating, is this a good idea?

should you leave the risome exposed or bury it.
Nice vid. Java fern is one my favorites. Especially when there is a bunch growing like a bush.
Do you need an air stone or air source to make sure it survives? Want to add to my betta tank which I do frequent 50% water changes
Hey Jacob. Ever dealt with Java Fern melt? Not much info about it is seen in the internet but a few hobbyists have been facing this problem.

Yukino I take mine out and trim out the old leaves on my java plant put it back and growth is phenomenal
Mines done the exact same .. did yours survive?
How do you feed java fern if it’s glued to a rock?
I have 5 silver dollars and they love eating plants, is java fern going to be ok with them?
Jose Mari Militante prob not
Jose Mari Militante java ferns are really bulletproof plants and do fine even with heavy plant eating fish like goldfish so I think you're good to go
I've got soo many long baby java ferns on the mother plant but didn't know what to do with them. They are brown though???
what soil do you have under your substrate?
I have the Fluval edge and I currently have Amazon swords, but their leaves seem really big for this tank. Will Java fern work better? Or do you have a better suggestion that I can use as a BG/Mid plant. I like the sword type.
how fast will java fern grow. After a week, how much growth will you see, 4+ inches?
Java Fern is a pretty slow grower, I would say, to see four inches of rhizome growth, it would take about four to six weeks. Thanks for watching! :)
am i supposed to leave the roots of my java tied up witha rubber band when i put it in the tank?
Thank you, Jacob. Your presentation was excellent, that is, cogent, informative, enthusiastic!
Java Fern in a 6 gallon aquarium with one betta fish and no substrate. HOB filter with only biological and mechanical filtration. Java Fern free floating. WC once per week, approx 20%. Should I add fertilizer to the water column? If so, what brand?

do you put it in with the dirt? also is there any way to trim?
Do you sell needle leaf java fern not narrow leaf java fern?
Hi, I realize this is an old video. But can you please let us know something about the tank behind you in this video. What's that plant on the top, has it been glued or is it floating. Thanks in advance jacob.....
Sorry jacob, just saw the reply you had given to another member regarding the same.
What happens when it is grown under high light?
I have had Java Fern in my tank for the last two years and altho it has spread a bit it's leaves don't grow longer than 2-3 inches, I also had problems growing Anubias (the leave of my anubias would not grow big. Might have been a plant that wasn't grown under water. Sellers do that because it grows faster that way.
Is it compatible with red ear sliders?
I got a question so I use Eco Complete substrate and I kinda wanted to do soil I guess I'll do that in the future I don't wanna tear my setup down, although if I do use soil do people cap it with Substrate or sand and or just leave the soil what's ur take on a better way for plant growth ? i know this video is old but thank you so much for this! i got some java fern for the first time and really found this video extremely helpful.
Is this a good plant for a beginner I wanna get into plants for my aquarium but don't know which one to get
Thanks for the info. What temperature range do you think will do best with the java fern? Thank you.
What do you have growing on the surface of the tank in the background duckweed?
DMAN D No not duckweed. Just a bunch of plants. This week was plant inspection, so I uproot all my plants, inspect them for quality, toss out any dead ones or diagnose any problem plants. As usual this week was an A+ no issues. Thanks for watching :)
JacobsAquarium Oh ok then good to hear i thought it looked really nice I was going to buy some for my bettas XD
Hi so i just got my 20 gallon tank set up and want to put plants this java fern would be perfect what else can i put
I didnt bury my java fern into substrate, still it melted. I have only guppies, i suspect that my vallisneria gigantea made a big shadow to them, or i didnt make regular water changes. Can you help me about this case?
hi Jacob. thanks for the insights. how do I trim the Java fern if I have to maintain a medium size (7 - 8 inches)? thanks again
My Java Fern on driftwood seems to be dying off and not as thick as it used to be. I dont fertilize what do you reccomend i do.?
It may be how it was initially grown. If the seller grew it immersed in water instead of totally submerged, then the plant needs to grow new leaves.
Thanks for the plant guide Jacob
her209 Thanks for watching my friend :)

How long can you leave it in the slotted pot that you buy it in?
do i need to add fertilizer for java fern to grow ?
Also a good plant for brackish tanks. I have mine in 1.010SG.
Is it good for guppies?
Also, can you suggest me some books on fresh water aquarium plants
Can you grow java ferns in a high tech tank with high light?
Hi Jacob .. can Java fern that has been grown underwater be regrown out of the water ? If so how
Can I pan java fern in a 10 Gal tank? Thank you
I have fern but every time I see it on the internet it looks brighter and in bunches mine is darker but it never grow extra leaves it's not dying and I know it's alive because smaller plants are growing from it but I don't understand why it's not growing anymore leaves
Hi..can anyone help me please.i wanna know if i can grow java fern in 30 temprature? Will it grow in this temp or it ll die? Thanks
Omg I've used the website so many times as a resource and only just stumbled across these videos and just now put 2 + 2 together and realized this is him!!! I'm irrationally excited about this, lol.
I have 15 or so red wag platies in my heavily planted 25g. In that tank I have rotala rotundifolia, microsword, chainsword, dwarf baby tears, pogostemon helferi, staurogyne repens, vallisneria, aponogenton, water wisteria, and compacta swords and my red wag platies don't mess up my plants at all.
I heard that if I had alot of new plants on my java fern leaves, it means it is stressed. Is it true?
And if it is, what can I do to reduce that stress
This plant as just taken off and now covers most of the tank. Should I dig it all up and bunch it up. Or just leave it to grow.
Depends on how you want your tank to appear...
This is another plant I've been told flourish excel could kill. Would you agree.
Gavin Powell Never happened to mine
Do you ship to Canada?
What's the fastest growing aquatic plant
Any plant grown with co2 lol. Thanks for watching.
Thank you to do this kind of plant education... pls do more
Jacob...thank you for these plant videos...they really help me a lot. I have a quick question for you...do you find (or think or feel) that java fern would do well in a tank with hard water? My water is basically liquid rock and I love java fern and would love to grow them yet I have no epxerience growing them and my hard water concerns me. Thank you in advance!
Is Java fern safe for red ear slider turtle?
