The story is that he learned of his father's condition (kidney failure) in September or October of 2019. He wrote the song and asked his recording crew and his father over to the studio in December. He had never sung it in public, and his father had never heard it before he sang it for the recording with his father sitting there next to him. Apparently, all of the recording crew were crying, and his father said, "Why are you crying? I'm still alive." James told the recording crew to not use autotune, because he wanted his real emotions to be evident. The choir background was added later. And, of course, when it was released on January 7, 2020, it made a lot of news, especially in Great Britain, and a distant relative heard about it, got tested, and was a match for a transplant. The surgery took place on January 28, and his father is still doing well.
Yes all of that but the song I believe originated from a poem his sister wrote. You could do a whole documentary on how this song/ video was produced, what for and at the end of filming the video when Jame's dad after seeing so many tears on set said something like, "I'm not dead yet."- that's me paraphrasing as you got his actual words highlighted.
I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much wonderful work with and for ex-servicemen and women, and as a former officer in the British military, I think that was a wonderful thing to do. James really is a remarkable young man. 🙋♂
I heard this watched it for the first time about a year ago. I was 61, lost my dad to cancer when I was 22 and now I have my own son who is 25. I cried listening to this.
That is his father, he was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and James wanted to do this before it was too late. Fortunately as a result of this song a distant relative connected with them and was a match for organ donation. Which was successful. An exceptional outpouring of emotion not just from a man, which is often frowned upon, but both are former British Army personnel. Great honest reaction. 🐺❤️
Because James said in the song "I'm not your son you're not my father" and I think that they explained that when they were in the military his father told him that they were equals @@johnwhalen5198
This song hits me hard every time I hear it. My father had dementia, and passed away in 2016 at 82. I cared for him since about 2011 when he couldn't do it himself. I went for a quick trip to the grocery store and within the 45mins I was gone he had passed. I thought I had more time, but as the song states, "the time has gone."
I think we as people who love to watch reactors, like to connect sometimes, & showing vulnerability with us, does that......thank you for being real & raw with us Thanks!
Two great ex soldiers from my home county Norfolk 🇬🇧 .met them both . The child that never was is also sad as is his song carry you home 😊 We cry a lot here 😂 At the end of the recording the crew were in tears and his dad said I’m still alive
The phrase "just two grown men saying goodbye" is supposed to be his fathers (himself a senior Army officer) parting words - in a very emotions hidden, understated British way - when James, as a Captain in the Household Cavalry deployed on active service to Kosovo in 1999.
Everyone else will tell you about his dad and blah blah blah. It’s his voice and the desperation there, the horror that you are going to lose your loved ones no matter what. Love them, tell them that you love them. Say what you fucking mean. They will be gone. Jason Isbel says it in Vampires, Maybe we’ll get 40 years, then one day you’ll be gone or I’ll be gone….
New sub here. Love the true raw reaction. I lost my dad back in May of 2020 to covid and this song rips my heart out every time I hear it. Also, this was done as a one take
Makes me well up every time I watch this. James and his father are both retired army officers in the UK army, so mums men. Tough guys which makes it all the more moving. Lovely reaction
Another song which James sings "A Girl That Never Was' is also an emotional song, as James and his wife apparently lost a baby girl early in their marriage, thus he sings about that as well. He's a master, at capturing emotion, yet still making a beautiful song from those emotions!
Don’t be embarrassed about crying. I’ve seen it probably 75 times and I cry almost every time. It’s an amazing song and strikes a chord with almost everyone. Most reactors go into it not knowing what to expect and they usually react like you did once it sinks in.
That's Charlie's blunt James real dad next to him in the video the dad was on the verge of dying from kidney failure but because of this video they found a long lost cousin and that cousin donated there kidney in order to save Charles life
The line I'm not your not my son I'm not your father we're just two grown men saying goodbye, james said this is what his father said to him when they were both being deployed in the military.
Hi Gina, I have watched quite a few reactions to this song and many wrongly guess the story being told. Well done for taking your time unpacking this and understanding the song correctly. Many before me have commented on the true story behind this, making it even more emotional. Next time you listen to it, now you know the story behind it, it will affect you more.
Hello there! What a lovely and emotional reaction! Congrats. I'd love to see you reacting to "The Girl that Never Was". (James Blunt - Official Video) Lots of love from Brazil.
Just a suggestion some time in the future - Eva Cassidy. I know you won't know her name. Just some day listen to her version of Over the Rainbow. She also does a beautiful version of Fields of Gold - just ask Sting. Probably everyone would know her name ... but she died way too young from melanoma. I guarantee you will never forget her version of Over the Rainbow
Capt James Blunt is saying his good byes to his father LCol Blunt before he dies. Not you Father, Not your son, just two men saying goodbye, is what they said when James deployed to Kosovo. They speak the words men rarely say . Its draining
I’ve watched a gazillion reactions to this song and it still his me to this time. He is a master songwriter and chooses the lyrics that goes straight to the heart and is super relatable. This is emotionally draining. Nothing like this…love James Blunt
His dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 5 years ago yesterday after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.
Usually after this one, reactors listen to his song 'The girl that never was" (official video). But it all depends the amount of tissues you still have in stock! Talking about the emotion that a close-up on face can provide, you could be interested by a song called "El perdón" by Diana Navarro. Not the same subject but powerfull as well. If you want to take a look, as it's in spanish, I suggest you to pick the video "Diana Navarro - El perdón (English subtitles / Sous-titres français / Subtitulos en español)" which has the best subtitles in my opinion. Anyway, good job on this one 👍
Oh no! They got you with Monsters, too! (at least they warned you, good peeps) Edit: Thanks for reading my comment. I want to tell you I see the courage you show watching and reacting to this in front of a UA-cam audience. Being highly attuned to body postures and micro expressions, I could see you fighting from the very start (sharp head turning sideways, short gasps, wide eyes, looking away, tucking chin, all involuntarily). You are as genuine as they come and I love you for it.
His father was told he would die if a donor wasn't found soon from 4 stage liver disease. They did this video and a lot of the production team on set were in tears. At the end of the video when his dad pats his arms he turns and says something like, "what are you all crying for, Im not dead yet." Because of partially this video a donar was found just in time. I think a whole video could be done about the making of this video. Ps) I think it is a whole family affair as the actual song is part of a poem his sister wrote to her dad.
Thanks Gina for another genuine reaction! I was lost a bit as well, thank you for the expansions of the comment section sometimes. James Blunt's music always hit different.
"LET THERE BE NO DARKNESS IN YOUR HEART!"❤️ ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LINES EVER WRITTEN IN A SONG!!! AND IT TEARS ME UP, WORSE THAN I WAS ALREADY CRYING, EVERY SINGLE TIME!! BUT THE GOOD NEWS, AS I'M SURE OTHERS HAVE TOLD YOU, IS THAT HIS FATHER GOT A KIDNEY DONOR AND SURVIVED🎉 ❤❤❤❤❤ AND I BELIEVE IT WAS BECAUSE OF THIS SONG!!😮❤
@@mikeb3268 sorry. You're correct. The point I was making is that he was a career mik8 man. @@robinbeerman4726 No problem! I’m a military man myself so probably a bit of a stickler when it comes to correct rank. Yeah, I’ve only just started listening to him myself. I’ve known the name since he began but never listened to anything until now. Definitely a talented man!
Im sure alot of people already told you but that was his real dad and he wrote this because his dad had cancer and was about to die so he made a goodbye song for him but he beat the cancer
I pulled the plug and walked to the doorway stopped squeezing the trim... Hoping i wont be him saying goodbye is all I can try we're both monsters but I won't be when I DIE
