DJI seemed to be more "correct" from a color point and clearer in the longer wider shots, the GoPro has more "pleasing" color but as you pointed out not as correct. Either would be a good choice so it looks like it comes down to how long a charge lasts and ease of use and weight

I like the DJI a tad better in the end. Up close to the rocks and coral there’s a green hue to the picture but in all the deeper pictures the contrast is superior in DJI. The reef bottom is much more clear in the DJI from farther out. I also appreciated the wider picture captured on the DJI. Thanks for the video!

The reef bottom clarity up close with the DJI was amazing.
      He has a tough decision
Neither camera was perfect for all scnerios
But in the end, if you’re not watching side by side cameras but just one, either will be fine imho

GoPro for sure, i like the color correcting feature. I have an older GoPro and run a magenta filter to correct the green effect that comes from losing red from being underwater especially in the northeast. The downside is that it’s really noticeable on the surface and in shallow water but once you hit 30ft or so it clears up.

Thank you for this video, I’ve been searching for a true underwater comparison and you did a great job. I favor the DJI by a hair. I wasn’t there to verify colors, but they seemed more natural to me on the DJI than the GoPro at all depths. On my iPad I can’t see any difference in sharpness and not enough in dynamic range to worry about. Thanks again, best wishes.

Hi Aaron. The GoPro is better. If the size bothers you, get the Mini. I think you confused color temperature or white balance with the thermal temperature. When you use auto white balance, the camera uses an algorithm to decide what adjustments it needs to make to create a balanced image (not too green or pink, not too warm/yellow or cool/blue). The algorithms in the newer cameras got better at setting the white balance automatically underwater. Underwater white balance is challenging because the water blocks the red wavelengths of light. The deeper you go, the less red you have, so the camera has to add a lot of red and magenta to compensate. The GoPro sometimes looks pink/red for a few seconds when you come back to the surface, because it adjusts the white balance more gradually than the Dji (slower WB adjustement is preferrable, less jarring). Professional videographers set the white blance manually using a grey card and or shoot in raw to get a perfectly balanced image. You can also improve the color of your videos by color correcting in post (I know you are busy, this takes time and practice to learn and perform every time). The blocky pixelation on some of the Dji clips is compression artefact. The GoPro does a much better job at preserving information on busy scenes. Make sure to turn High bitrate and 10-Bit color on in the Protune settings. You can also download the GoPro Labs firmware to get even higher bitrates on the GoPro

Hey I just want to start by saying I’m a huge fan and I love the videos. I miss my home state of Florida and can’t wait to move back now that my wife and I are out of the military. Your videos are the perfect blend of informative and entertaining and I thank you for it. You have sparked a desire to start free diving in me that I can’t shake off lol. Thank you for everything you do. And as far as this video goes I think over all I’m gonna have to give it to the DJI. You seem to get more field of view in the footage and the color grading seems more accurate to what you actually see and almost has a movie quality to it. I think the DJI is better suited to your film style and would help set you videos apart from the other content creators out there. It would be nice to see how it preforms in dirty water and the mangroves side by side like shown here to be sure it’s best suited for where you film the most. Thank you for always making my days better and happy holidays.

Gopro hands down, but i use my DJI for lots of timelapses, Using photo-timelapse- color grade Photoshop - Edit, Adobe Premier Pro, also DJI Action, and shooting in manual mode, helps with good ND filter. But doing deep drops you wouldn't want to be in manual mode. But the clarity on the bottom, the footage from the Gopro looks great and in other shots the dji has better contrast on the reef. This could be the sensor built into the camera playing catch up at low light level.
My overall take... Some images from the bottom had amazing contrast with the Dji, But the Gopro had better coloring on the fish,
But what it comes down to is the coloring of your face on the first drop, Dji was extremely green, this might be an easy fix playing with white balance setting.
    Hope this was helpful

The GoPro appears to be better as the DJI has a green tint to the color. That being said the DJI had a bit more contrast in some footage. I would think there are adjustments on both to dial in the colors. I know the GoPro has some more advanced features for shooting video out of the water for those using it as a multi-purpose. Like you said they both provide very good footage so a difficult choice. Personally I would go for the GoPro for now unless DJI provides some color adjustment or had a firmware update for color correction IMO. Loved the hammerhead footage and the dive footage!

As for the cameras I prefer the wider field of view and higher color rendering of the DJI but I think it almost needs color grading to reach its full potential. Not sure how much color correction you do on your videos but most of the color differences between the DJI and GoPro can be changed in post. The DJI footage also has more contrast than the GoPro footage, which looks better straight out of camera but can be easily added back in post. One quirk of the GoPro footage is when you go from shooting underwater to above water, the automatic color correction makes the above water shot very pink for about a second or two (see 7:45). I've been using the GoPro 10 for about a year now and have been pretty happy with it for underwater footage!

Great video, I remember the hammerheads coming into the channel during the winter. On balance, I found the GoPro the better camera. DJI is a player and GoPro had better stay on its game - but for now, and price point being somewhat equal, the GoPro has my vote.

mostly just to buck the trend but I actually did like the DJI better, the contrast and depth stand out and that green tint doesn't bother me, I'm sure most people wouldn't even realize if it wasn't side by side.
Thanks for the video, awesome diving!

Wow what a hard choice. When you first started diving I was like GoPro all day because the clarity was better especially out at a distance on the bottom. Then you started filming the spearfishing. The DJI had it hands down the whole time during that. I felt like I could see the bottom better in all the shots facing down with the DJI. Maybe its just a case of the DJI excelling with the lighting in the higher columns? Good luck with your decision.

So I am about to go diving and have a GP9 I am looking to upgrade. Stuck between the GP11 and the DJI3.
What is missing in this video for me is what both cameras look like if a red filter was added to the lens. That would make a huge difference.
Based on the above my natural preference is for the GP11 - it's just a better picture. BUT, the GP has many known issues, including regular overheating/random shutdowns that can only be fixed by removing the battery, which cannot be done under water - so it's a risk if you only have one dive and your camera freezes.
I am really conflicted and need to make a decision in the next week.
The other option, of course, is to stick with the GP9 and wait for the GP12 and DJI4 later in the year. TBH that might be the better path. I just like new toys!! :)

haha I hear ya, I personally don't like shooting with a red filter. I like people to see what I see. I haven't had any overheating or freezing issues with the 11 yet. use them 2-3 times a week.

For transparency, I am red/green color blind and I am certain this plays a role in my preference. I saw a clearer picture in the Go Pro in general as the DJI pic at times seems grainy. But there were shots where I could see the DJI picture was sharper and with more contrast. When filming the other divers I notices it in their gear the most. My vote goes to GoPro but I think either way you go you will be good Aaron. Thanks for the awesome content. Something I look forward to weekly.

For me the dgi did really great on the spear fishing compare to the go pro.. First part ... difference doesn't really matter to me.. I am watching the main shot , if you had not mentioned the water column diff.. wouldn't have noticed. But yeah I watch alot of youtube channels after every sort.. and many youtubuers that have experience are talking about switching. Gopro has software built in that adds red tint on the bottom, makes the colors nicer on the bottom but has trouble deciding when to take it off when you get to the surface. Thats why it's so red at the surface. I think the Gopro was the hands down winner. less background movement in the shots, less noise from the lower lighting, brighter colors. The DJI is a great camera, but DJI hasn't focused on under water as much or as long as Gopro has. DJI will be a great camera to use above water, especially if you start incorporating their drones in your videos. However, my vote is for the Gopro underwater. Thanks for this side by side. I have been considering adding a DJI action to my collection of cameras.

Really a tossup, the GoPro makes things more vibrant, but it's also a little unrealistic like you said with that fish being nowhere near that pink. The DJI had some cloudiness in the background water, but maybe that's just how it actually looks out there? I've only been to the ocean a handful of times, so you're my greatest source of seawater enjoyment lol!
    Definitely would like either camera!
