Just ordered my first camera for motorcycle trips, and went with the Insta360 X4. Fingers crossed but I like the different ways that you can get creative with the 360 footage.
I'm on the fence. When I bought my GoPro HERO6 Black in 2021, it immediately was locking up and corrupting files on the latest firmware at the time. Since then it's continued to have sporadic issues. It worked enough to get Black Hills footage back in 2021, but overall I'm not happy with GoPro. I'm thinking Insta360 Ace for the Cardo connectivity.

That’s the truth, I have the 360 and 10 and film video on my moto, sick and tired of losing footage ( file repairing). I have the remote controller which connects to both my cameras which I couldn’t be without when I’m riding I have it mounted to where I use my thumb on my handlebars to activate and deactivate. What about the 360? Is there a DJI 360. Btw I loved their DJI mini drone until I lost it in the Ecuadorian mountains.( pilot error)

I just came back from a 12 days trip where I was filming on a Osmo Action 3, and I had several occasions when it shutted down due to overheating, but that was when I was filming stationary in hot conditions. It never overheated when I was on the go on a motorcycle. The thing which I wish would be the same as on the Action 4 is the direct connectivity from the cam to the wireless mic. With the Action 3 you need to plug in the dongle into the camera to use the mics. Which works well, but it means that when it starts raining I need to stop filming and take the camera away or to unplug the microphone dongle and put back the usb-c port cover to not flood the camera and the dongle. In real life I just stopped filming every time it started raining, which is a shame, because I really like how this camera films in rain. So I want to upgrade to Action 4 because of this dongleless mic connectivity, otherwise the Action 3 is good for me.
As always great video!!! I can totaly agree with you on everything you said, i started of a hero black 11 and nothing but issues, got 2 Action 4 now and the work like clockwork!!!
My biggest problem with GoPro was the horrendous customer service. My attempt to obtain a simple warranty replacement turned into an extended nightmare such that I eventually just gave up. Bought a DJI instead, and the camera is much better than the GoPro, anyways.
Odd. I lost a chin cam on I-15 and had it replaced through the subscription program somewhat painlessly. Cost me about half full cost, including the media mount.
I use the Action 4 and the mic 2 for motocross videos and it's a great system. I also on occasion use a lav mic with the 3.5mm adapter so I can use voice commands. The DJI 3.5mm adapter adds better gain function to tune out wind noise as opposed to just plugging in a USB-C mic. A dead cat is also a must. I also started using the DJI wrist remote which has GPS capabilities and automatically transfers the data to the video file in the camera. All three pieces work perfectly together and automatically sync up after the first time you set them up. Using the Telemetry Overlay software to edit my videos I can get my lap times which is awesome. I have no problems with sponsored videos if they are honest and I agree with all your comments about the DJI camera. Never owned a GoPro but no need to. I watched my brother suffer through all the problems you described.
Absolutely love my DJI products. Best thing I ever did was ditching GoPro. I do also use a insta360 X3 and like it but I would never use it as a primary camera. Sad that they are trying to ban all of DJI’s products. Thanks for another great review.
I have every GoPro up to the 5. I switched to original osmo action and still no need to upgrade to anything newer. Maybe when the OA5 is released. I’m looking for 3rd party bluetooth mic capability.
One thing I've found really helps get clean in-helmet voice recordings is a chin curtain. Just reducing the turbulent wind and a bit of the road noise coming in from underneath makes a huge difference. To be fair, I use a Shoei Glamster, which is slim and loud, so it probably makes a bigger difference there than on a chonky touring helmet.
I'm done with GoPro too - I've had errors on every one of my recent rides which has been insanely frustrating. I wish Sony still made action cameras, my AS300 was an amazing camera (although I hated the form factor). Thanks for the video!
I have had 3 GoPro's. Currently using the GoPro 10 and I love it. I have experienced no problems with any of mine, use it regularly. Overheating problems, never experienced it. But I did watch many online reviews and easy methods to counter act overheating
I used the original Osmo Action (1) for more than 2 years, not a single freeze, error or anything. Now I'm on an Osmo Action 3. I bought the OA-3 because it had a very good discount, also I had some vouchers so I got it much cheaper than normal, and it was the Adventure combo version.
I am considering the DJI cameras. Why? 1. First reason are similar to your reasons 2. I bought two GoPro Hero 7 blacks in 2019. One doesn't work anymore & the other one is extremely unreliable 3. I bought two GoPro Hero 8's in 2022. One now consistently cycles on and off The second one turns off within 15 seconds . Neither one is usable anymore 4. I bought a 3rd GoPro Hero 8 in 2023. It now turns off within seconds after I push the on button it is not usable either 5. All five of these GoPro have had issues with heat, inconsistent recording, & corrupting files. 6. There is always a daily frustrating issues every time I use the GoPros 2 Questions about the DJI camera 1. I like using external battery banks. Can an external battery be connected to the DJI camera 2. I like that I could turn the GoPro on and off on my iPhone with an app. Can this be done with the DJI camera?
Thanks Ian getting an action 3 tomorrow. Used DJI drones for a couple years really good! The ban will be only for DJI drones I suspect due to their use in Ukraine.
I've used DJI OA 3 and 4 for the last couple of years and I have never lost a single clip as the software is so stable. This is the main reason why I use DJI for everything. Currently film my videos with OA 3, OA 4 and pocket 3. I've bought all my cameras with my own money and I will continue to buy DJI if the software stays awesome like it has been.
Thanks for the honest reviews, it’s really frustrating making videos with unreliable cameras. But shame US government is planning to ban DJI products starting with their drone department.
In the interests of balance the not overheating does not extend to the Action 2 cube-like camera which I own and becomes almost too hot to touch after 5 or 6 minutes at 4K/50p. Also my GoPro Hero 11 has indeed locked up spontaneously but only twice in over a year. No files were lost. I'd argue the GoPro is better built, feeling tike a rubber armoured solid chunk of metal whilst the DJI 4 seems less substantial. To be fair the only Action 4 I've seen was on an open tethered display in an electrical store. Both give almost equal (and outstanding) video quality. I AM having to return the GoPro so-called Media Mod for the 11 (the case gizmo with the external mic and extra inputs) which simply won't connect to the camera - wish I'd read more reviews before ordering as the internet is full of owners with the same problem. I'm in UK and this means I have to return it to the Netherlands - you'd think they would have some sort of a presence in the UK.
Not really a fan of this guy but in this case he is absolutely right about GoPro. At one time GoPro was really your only option, not so much anymore and GoPro better pick up the slack or get left behind.
Jeeezz. Thank you! I always thought that I was just not capable of operating these camera's. I am no moto vlogger but I enjoy posting some of my dirt bike riding videos and I have pretty much stopped due to all the difficulties I have with my Go Pro.
DJI seems to be making a big push with influencers. I've seen a bunch if them lately doing similar videos to this one, which always makes me skeptical.
Usually I'd have a problem with that but DJI is genuinely better than GoPro and someone needs to make GoPro see that they're headed towards bankruptcy in order for then to try and IMPROVE their product.
I've beenusing the DJI Action 3 for some time now and I wouldnt go back to GoPro for my bike rides. I still have a couple of GoPros I use for music videos, but will probably sell those and get more DJI Cameras to make colour balancing easier. Thanks for the video Ian! 👍
Totally agree. Bought GoPro 12 and returned it after 3 weeks. Complete piece of shit. Then got the Osmo, and it’s great. Still using it. Still love it.
Ian’s right re the audio delay. When first turned on the mic volume is very loud with awful engine noise for maybe 10+ seconds then it is excellent. This glitch is a lot shorter for subsequent recording but you just wait 5 seconds then speak. I find the on/off button is not perfect and sometimes struggle to turn it both on and off. You need to be able to see the top of the rear screen to confirm it is filming.
Awesome video. This is exactly what I have been looking for. I ride a big bike off road at high speeds, and have ruined many good takes with excessive wind noise using other action cams. I just purchased a DJI OA4, and a DJI compatible USB-C mic, and will try your settings. I mount the cam on top of my helmet because I have a tall windscreen (stock). Question 1. What audio settings (if any) need to be changed for the camera to see the USB-C mic, and switch to record from that source ONLY. I want to be able to completely tun off (mute) all other mics except the tapped up wired lavalier inside my helmet. Question 2. I have seen other DJIOA4 videos with little to no wind noise without any external mic attached. Is this possible by turning off (muting) the (2) front onboard mics and then using the onboard windproof mic on the top? Have you tried this? Thanks for all you do.
Hi There, I have exactly the same issues with gopro, like you said... The last good gorpo was GP7, now I tested 8 and two pieces od GP10 and all of them have hueg reliability issues... One of my GP10 just now went black and does not work at all... so I am also considering Osmo 4 now... I had enough.
I will be constructive on why some viewers might be upset. I do not blame you or anyone wanting to switch to DJI or Insta360 for action cameras. I came to this conclusion not from this video but a true non biased non sponsored motorcycle comparison video. To me GoPro is a sinking ship with the constant layoffs and lack of urgency on fixing issues with hardware and software. What I think a lot of people are upset about is you have the money for a GS1300, you have the money for a Trophy SE, but you did not want to spend $600-$1000 dollars of camera equipment? In January you made a video about sponsored content with a thumbnail that said "it looks like a review but it's an ad" while you tried to argue that getting a free camera isn't really sponsorship I feel like it is because the FCC influencer guide does suggest that it is an ad. Wording in the guide needs to be more stringent but around page 5 there is an example. I thank you for disclosing but I feel like the video in January is now moot or was just a video to get on the bandwagon. If you want to make things right, do a giveaway show us the viewer "hey I like this you should too, I went out bought everything I got for free and here is your chance to win it" Show a copy of the receipt transparency helps.
I guess I'm the outlier, haven't had any significant issues across 3 different GoPro's. Hero 3, 10 and 12 Black. Maybe on one hand can I count the amount of times they have given me problems across hundreds of videos. Nothing is perfect. Keep them up to date, use SanDisk cards, official GoPro batteries, and they work fine. I do wish GoPro would bring back the built in DAC like DJI has though. It used to be in the Hero 3 & 4.
Interesting to hear how you run your setup. I still use my Hero 4 for my occasional trips lol, that old one won’t die. Thanks for the Amazon link that’s a nice bundle for $400. Also nice the audio gets a great solution with those wireless DJI mics.
The the bluetooth from DJ mic 2, is that great. I have tried having the mic on my trailbag, but my action cam 4 , every now and then loses the signal or gives bad sound. Works well in "free" sight.
Fantastic video, and thank you for all your videos btw 👍 Couldn’t help it but had to laugh at some of the critics, I wonder which credibility has to questioned here, the one criticizing you for being always honest with your sponsors but still watching your videos 😂 or yours, it might be annoying but I hope you don’t waste to much time and energy on those hypocrites. Looking forward to more gear reviews!
Reliability, battery life, no heating problems, etc is great. My only concern is the magnetic mount. If you do off road where there is a lot of vibration and jumping, I´m not sure the camera will stay in place. What do you think? Another great review BTW. Cheers
Ian, great video, as always...but a couple of days late...just bought an Insta360 Ace Pro. I am a GoPro 5 user and all you said about GoPro cameras fit entirely on my unit. Hope Insta360 is as good as this Osmo Action 4.
I use rode one in my helmet and one for my engine and insta 360. I have to sync audio for everything. Does the DJI mic have input for lavalier mic? Because if I can Bluetooth 2 lavalier mics to a osmo 4. This would be awesome for my next road trip, simply transfer the video to my iPad Pro and don’t need all the work with sync audio from rode?
Don't know about GoPro's reliability in person (because don't have owned one), but is common UA-camrs complain about various issues (being battery or corrupted files or overheating, etc). In opposition to a DJI action 3 (adventure pack), which I own from three (3) months (didn't though needed the improvements in the action 4 and the 3 was at a very good price) and it is really reliable until now, in my experience. Better would be the magnetic mount to be reversible (but i imagine the magnetic poles don't allow that). Do you tried the same memory cards in both GoPro and DJI?
Did you mention that you have to activate it first through the app? I’m not too sure that I need another thing tracking me, my phone, and my data. Seems unnecessary to me and potential deal breaker.
I can't speak for the DJI Action cameras, but I've had no problems with my drone or Pocket 3. They're both great. Hopefully the DJI ban our government is working on won't pass or at the very least, won't affect the action cameras. My Heroes haven't been a HUGE problem, sometimes it won't power up and you have to remove the battery and put it back in. Not very often. My main problem is I'm a motovlogger and the battery will die and I can't see that it died. This would be a problem with any action camera. I've had a less than pleasurable experience twice with Insta360 support. Not horrible, but not good. I had a Insta360 One X2 with frequent shut down problems that really put a damper on a two week trip (10-12 episodes). I like the clip mount for the DJI. But I have batteries and chargers for the HERO10 and the picture quality is very good. It would not be a small investment to switch. Unless DJI wants to send me free gear, of course. The DJI Mic2's audio quality is... average at best. With a fair amount of EQ and some compression, you can get it to sound reasonable. Without that it's not horrible, but it's peaky around 1.5-2k giving a bit of a shoebox sound. For an in helmet mic, I would not recommend the mic directly in front of your mouth. It's going to pick up your breath more and especially plosives and transiensts (picked a peck of pickled peppers... she sells sea shells by the sea shore). I'd put it about 45 degrees off to one side at mouth level. Of course, the slower you go, the less wind noise you'll have.
Great timing; Looking for an action cam. GoPro has new one coming out in the Fall I don’t want to wait for plus their reliability, overheating, and battery issues and Insta360 action camera is kind of meh, image stabilization is not great and it weights a ton. Plus, they make a great drone, which I am also interested in.
I still think GoPro is fine, even their external mic quality for motovlogging is way up there in terms of quality. But I experienced overheating, corrupted files, freezing problems and then suddenly the battery would drain even when the camera was off, that was my reason for switching to DJI, it's more reliable and has affordable accessories, also it looks better and its smaller.
That's funny, I listed all the issues I had while watching and then you basically listed everything I had experienced right after I typed it lol Btw you can change all the settings on the front screen of the OA4.
Since the DJI has Bluetooth can I assume you are able to connect with your Cardo system to utilize the mic already in my helmet? That has always been a big negative with the GP’s. Thanks for the info.
I had small issues sometimes with my gopro, even had a replacement, cause it got some smoke from the inside, but this conversation of gopro replacement it's been out for years, and in the end most of the vlogers return to gopro, i hope this is not the case, and finally there could be some alternatives. BTW before my last gopro i had a bad experience with insta 360, they wait for the last day that paypal gave them, to refund me, and before that you can't imagine how their costumer service tried to stall me, they even said they last all my emails... this with a insta 360 one rs
GoPro are terrible for reliability to the point of being unusable which is why I switched to DJI some months back. The only issue I have with them is the delay in switching to the external mic when hitting the quick start button to start recording. Apart from that they are great 👍
Interesting that there's a lot of videos where DJI send cameras to UA-camrs, but I didn't find any video where GoPro provided free camera, except when is launching a product. I don't want to say that reviews are not honest, but, I thing that DJI, which I love and admire on it's product (i own DJI Mini 2, DJI Mini 4 pro, DJI Pocekt 2, DJI Osmo pocket 3, DJI Action 2), wants this videos to use as their marketing strategy.
Seems like a lot of the Moto vloggers on Instagram and UA-cam went insta360 or DJI. GoPro it's like a lot of companies that get on top. They quit listening to their customer base and quit improving their product.
Does anyone (Rode, Sennheiser, DJI, etc) make a lavalier mic with a shorter cord specifically for use with a helmet? Maybe make it only 18-24 inches rather than the typical 4-foot cord length. Seems like that would be a no-brainer product for someone to offer given all the moto-vloggers these days. Sure would be nice not to have to find a space to tuck three extra feet of cord length in your helmet w/o creating pressure points.
What camera will you choose in 2024? GoPro, DJI or Insta360?

@@Ride_0n Yeah the catch is you had to pay for a SUBSCRIPTION!
@@Waldo1122 $50 saved me about $300. DJI and Insta360 also have care/subscription plans.
@@Waldo1122still costs less than a new camera..
@@camposvazquez Yeah, then GoPro sends you a new unreliable camera and you continue to lose footage and experience the typical GoPro camera problems.
I had same issues as you’ve had with GoPro. I am now using insta360 ace pro and fingers crossed so far l have had no issues.
100%! I love the DJI cameras, been using them sense they started with the first Osmo Action.
Absolutely love my DJI products. Best thing I ever did was ditching GoPro. I do also use a insta360 X3 and like it but I would never use it as a primary camera. Sad that they are trying to ban all of DJI’s products. Thanks for another great review.
Reliability! I have made the switch and have sold off my gopros!
I have every GoPro up to the 5. I switched to original osmo action and still no need to upgrade to anything newer. Maybe when the OA5 is released. I’m looking for 3rd party bluetooth mic capability.
Havent finished the video but i love the disclosure. Really appreciate the honesty
I appreciate that!
Same here, love my DJI Action 3!
Why?
1. First reason are similar to your reasons
2. I bought two GoPro Hero 7 blacks in 2019. One doesn't work anymore & the other one is extremely unreliable
3. I bought two GoPro Hero 8's in 2022. One now consistently cycles on and off
The second one turns off within 15 seconds . Neither one is usable anymore
4. I bought a 3rd GoPro Hero 8 in 2023. It now turns off within seconds after I push the on button it is not usable either
5. All five of these GoPro have had issues with heat, inconsistent recording, & corrupting files.
6. There is always a daily frustrating issues every time I use the GoPros
2 Questions about the DJI camera
1. I like using external battery banks. Can an external battery be connected to the DJI camera
2. I like that I could turn the GoPro on and off on my iPhone with an app. Can this be done with the DJI camera?
Thanks Ian getting an action 3 tomorrow. Used DJI drones for a couple years really good! The ban will be only for DJI drones I suspect due to their use in Ukraine.
i am 100% happy with the Action 4, i have two DJI drones and they are phenomenal too. DJI has their shit together.
Everyone I know is using insta360s, almost no DJIs
Thanks for the honest reviews, it’s really frustrating making videos with unreliable cameras. But shame US government is planning to ban DJI products starting with their drone department.
I want to record some stuff, but to be honest, the tech is intimidating.
We have to be happy when on market is gopro, insta and dji, thats why price and performance is amazing ;)
Jeeezz.
They have a campaign and want to oust gopro. It's true. They are doing a lot of sponsored videos.
I just finished unboxing my Action 4 a few minutes ago. I'm getting it ready for the Touratech Rally
I have a DJI but still love my Garmin Virb Ultra30. I love the build in GPS. I wish Garmin would have updated their cameras.
All good tips. Will invest in one pretty soon. Lot better than GoPro
Thank you so much, brother. This is very helpful, more power to your channel!
Looking forward to seeing more Yamaha Champions Riding School footage from the May event I met you at.
Great content! Thanks for sharing. Going to ditch the Gopro here shortly. Have never been happy with it.
Yeah, I have been thinking about switching for a while myself. Someone will get my Gopros and accessories for a great price!
Reliability, battery life, no heating problems, etc is great. My only concern is the magnetic mount. If you do off road where there is a lot of vibration and jumping, I´m not sure the camera will stay in place. What do you think? Another great review BTW. Cheers
It’s not just a magnet, there are hooks too, it’s rock solid and yet easy to detach.
even tho i still preffer how the gopro looks, i'm really looking towars DJI, the easy of use really adds to the experience...
Thanks for valuable info👍 Btw - which editor / software do you use ?
Did you mention that you have to activate it first through the app? I’m not too sure that I need another thing tracking me, my phone, and my data. Seems unnecessary to me and potential deal breaker.
OK. Well that's a slam dunk if ever there was one. Thanks, Ian.
I bought my Osmo Action 3 three years ago then a second one a year later and I really like them, but I REALLY like my Insta360 X3 the best.
Thanks for sharing
My GoPro works just fine.. the 11 and 12. I guess its all in how the user handles it.
Hey Ian. Would you share a tip at what FPS you typically shoot your videos? Thanks.
I’m sad I bought a GoPro 10. I’ve been really disappointed with it. At the time I didn’t know about DJI’s action cameras.
Moved to DJI a long time ago, GoPro lost the plot👍. Here in the UK most moto vloggers have moved to DJI or Insta.
That's funny, I listed all the issues I had while watching and then you basically listed everything I had experienced right after I typed it lol
Btw you can change all the settings on the front screen of the OA4.
awesome video, learned alot! like get a DJI instead of a GoPro. huge Ups! dropped a like and a sub.
I just ordered the adventure combo from Amazon! What chin mount do you use for your helmet with this model?
Since the DJI has Bluetooth can I assume you are able to connect with your Cardo system to utilize the mic already in my helmet? That has always been a big negative with the GP’s. Thanks for the info.
Very helpful video, Ian. Do you find that certain helmets are more accomodating for interior mike placement and chin-mounted cameras?
Most helmets are similar. Tape over the vents in front.
Can you adjust gain on new osmo 5 pro ?
It appears to have a low cut audio option , but can’t see the adjust gain option in any sub menu ect
TNX - great ! - now I can, finally, start MY own V-blogging 🤣🤣
Been using the Insta360 Ace Pro, never going back to GoPro. Curious to test an Osmo tho...
Just such a rookie here .... But what to order to mount to your motorcycle?
Great revew , can you record a chat group Cardo on it so you get your buddies and yourself ?
Is it possible to tie in the camera to the sena mesh system?
Should i get the adventure one or standard one , i want to use it for my mountain bike too apart from my motorcycle?
Get the avventure one and the mtb kit
GoPro are terrible for reliability to the point of being unusable which is why I switched to DJI some months back. The only issue I have with them is the delay in switching to the external mic when hitting the quick start button to start recording. Apart from that they are great 👍
Curious Ian, have you compared also with Insta 360?
What thumb screw are you using on your helmet, it looks really easy to us?
I'm currently using Insta and not very pleased with it. Thanks Ian!
I want the best image quality....gopro miles ahead,I do agree they have some problems, I can deal with that
Would you share who made your chin mount?
Does DJI support linux OSs?
Regards
Keep up the good work.
Own money and recently switched to insta 360 .. great. Products
I don’t understand the action 4 push at this point in the cycle. We’re a month or two away from the action 5
Great review!
Are the terms of use and activations for software any different than any other action cam maker?
Buyer beware: the action 5 should be coming out in the next 2-3 months, so you may want to wait
How do you attach the DJI to your helmet?
Thanks !!
Great review Ian 👍
Time to sell gopro shares 😅
