Doing what i do best. 10 plate BMW 520d N47 engine. Timing chain without taking the engine out. I have explained step by step on how to do the complete work.
Check out my other videos ☺: Dawda the mechanic.
top technician just done one this way 11 hours but perfect now saved hundreds thanks for the video
Michael Gunner thank you☺ and well done 👍
Is it mandatory to release the Oil from the Automatic transmission before removing it or can I remove the transmission and keep the transmission oil inside?
Thank you!
Thank you for posting this video. I've heard a bit about these engines & chain problems. This has shown what the job is all about so will now be better prepared for my 1st one (no doubt soon!)
No problem and good luck👍
Great video mate, very informative with some great tips like using the bolt in the high pressure pump to remove the pulley, so simple an idea but yet so effective. Thanks very much.
No problem and thanks 👍
Awesome vid! I've watched many vids on replacing the chain. This is by far the best. Well explained. Thumbs up!!!
It's not awesome..these chains.are FAILING and costing people ££££€€€€$$$$¥¥¥....chains tend to Stretch at over 200k...not break like this at under 100k miles.it's not even a Duplex Chain!!!!
@@TheMuzikallI'm referring to the vid when I say awesome. As its very informative and clearly explained.
The fact these chains snap in the first place is shit!
did you end up changing it yourself?
I did my timing chain this weekend everything went smooth, but i got a fault code on crankshaft sensor signal. Have i broken it or what do you think? Car takes few extra secounds to start also because of it, no wierd sound or anything, also runs smooth when it starts.
Crank and cam is in the right place, when i lock cam with tool it fits good also when i lock flywheel with the tool.
Absolutely brilliant, well done mate. Very precise and clear, will be doing my own chain thanks to this
Thank you for uploading!
This is such a great video, most informative and very clearly explained. Thank you.

Fine timing chain replacement!
We need a quality Mechanic like you in Kent mate!! All my local garages are useless!
DR T 😂 thank you ☺
DR T where abouts are you in Kent?
I agree with DR T . Many garages in Liverpool will not take on BMW timing chain replacement some reason
Mine is currently off the road for now due to timing chain. Not snapped but making awful noise so not taking the gamble until it's replaced. Crazy the prices though. £900 and some £1700 +
Don't mind the cost but the difference in prices makes you wonder are the cheaper ones not doing a decent job or is it the garage who quoting more ripping you off 🤔
trouble is no one pays quality money in kent so hard to find quality mechanic , you get same money stacking shelve ,

@@dawdathemechanic-dawdaauto1761 question, is it an expensive job even if charging less for it?
@@DassRoc hello it all depends on the garage hourly rate. It takes about 10hrs.
some local garages charge £700 part and labour and some charge £1k part & labour. Main dealer will be more because of there hourly rate is higher 👍
@@dawdathemechanic-dawdaauto1761 I see, ouch!... thanks for the info! keep up the solid work!
great work!
From what I was able to research, in Romania, all the work on the N47 timing chain is done by removing the engine (according to BMW guidelines, as they say). Is it better to do it your way? Is it faster? What's the upside/downside?
If you have a lift then it's prob best to just remove gearbox.. If you're doing it at home then prob easier to remove engine.. That's my plan anyway
Is the timing chain a problem only in N20-N47 engines?
@@diegonavyhotmail All N and B series engines
I am doing this job right now at work but took out engine and lots of other bits easy to drop engine
Amazing, thank you! Excellent instructions!

Same happen to mercedes but mercedes owners do not want to admit that they have same problem they are too proud to tell that mercedes is also unreliable.
Well explained awesome video wow 👏👏👏👏
I try this method on my bmw n47, 116 d and it didn´t work, I had to place first the crankshaft 45 degree atdc, then hpfp on the mark then the chain betwen them, then turn back the crankshaft to tdc ,after this place the cam shaft chain
How do you turn it 45 degrees atdc? Does it allign with a hole or how do really you know it is at 45 degrees atdc? Thanks
I took out engine it's easier and better job
Mainly reason why timing chain fail, is lack of oil change. Cold start hard driving, down shifting ect.Service interval by Bmw 30.000 km its way to much out of mind.
Use best oil 5w30 LL and do your oil change often 10.000-15.000km and trust me ,you won't have this type of issues..
BMW N type Engine's are know to fail regardless of Engine oil change.
But still its better to change your oil after 10.000 km
The timing chain went on my 2013 1 series 2 weeks ago on start up. I removed the engine an found no damage to the cylinder head thankfully 1 an a million chance the cam stopped with all valves closed. This video has give me confidence to redo the timing. Top video keep up the good work
Ouch!Was that 177bhp or 184?
Did you repair this yourself? i'm in the same position and need help or recommendations.
What a piece of shit design?
Love your video man currently going to school to be a tech and this was helpful because I own a vehicle with this setup.
Just want some info for the same job, will do it tomorrow. Have you removed the gearbox without removing the driveshaft? Is that possible? Thank you for all the good explanations!
Hello no problem👍
This car is rear wheel drive so it only had prop shaft connected at the back of the gearbox. No drive shaft is connected to it. If it's a 4wheel drive then you'll need yo remove drive shaft.

i think would be good if i could bring my car to you, then you can do this timing chain for me! your video was great but unlike you i could never undertake a job like this. The problem is most garages you give them the car then it comes back with something else that needs doing when there was nothing wrong with the car when it went in! or if it all ok by far im 100% sure that they will miss something like a nut or a bolt!! if any one can do it is you :) ... saying this mine dont need doing but would do it now rather than later lol
Thank you 👍 I understand what you mean but I don't have my own garage at the moment.

@@dawdathemechanic-dawdaauto1761 well done Dawda. Like Vitor, I also need mine done. Car will not start. Diagnostics are saying cam shaft position sensor. what an absolute nightmare of a job I have a 2012 520d are those guides affected
yes. every n47d20 is affected. The only one
that is not, is the new generation with 190hp!
The n47 c and d engine is not as bad of break fast. Thing to do is every 7/8k doing early oil change, bmw idrive service is crap. And swap to 5w-30 or some use 5w-40.
0w-30 is too thin of an oil.
Also driving only local is never good for this engine.
My uncle used to have a 2011 e90. His driving was only traffic every day, his engine started going bad.
Mine is a 2009 and he was shocked how different mine run from his. Since my daily drive is motorway.
Well done from Romania!! 👏✌
I'm about to do that job for the first time, very helpfull video Dawda :-)
Hey Dawda, I highly doubt you’ll see this but, I’m timing my n4720dc engine right now and the chain for the crank to the fuel pump is more slack on the guide side, I tried moving the chain to make it have more tension on the guide side but it’s just not happening, is it a case of moving the chain and I’m doing it wrong or has it stretched, please help 😢
What about high pressure pump timing ?
i dont get why many people don't set the hpfp
Dawda The Mechanic Man, you definitely need to start freelancing and having your own place!!! you will be a rockstar!!! keep it up
Thank you mate, it'll happen when the time comes👍
Well done excellent workmanship. That engine design o what a pile of crap single row chains are only suitable for small petrol engines like 1200cc.
Thank you and yes it's true 👍
To prevent timing chain issues, simply don't buy a BMW
Thank you for this video and god bless you for this, regards drom croatia.
No problem👍
Hello buddy, doesn't the high pressure pump sprocket need to be in correct position? Or just take of an on again?
you sure make it look so simple... in the process of changing mine, but have no lift. i might be able to get it high enough to get the gearbox from underneath. In Sweden it cost over £5.000 to have it changed at BMW mechanics. An easy 5 * for your video mate.
Would this work on my 2011 BMW X5 xDrive 40d???
Hey I am a Swedish nationality, I been there few time haha.
Anyway thanks. The x5 Gear box is big and to remove the oil sump will be difficult on x5. I haven't done it on x5 but the procedure is the same. I think it's best to remove the engine on a x5.
Any other question feel free to ask👍
Dawda The Mechanic what would be the differens besides the 4x4 shaft? I work as a Volvo/ Renault mechanic but have been fixing a lot of other brands as well, so I’m quite confident with the tools. The car is park in the garage until I have it fixed and I bought another car until I have time to fix it. But I do not have not removed a BMW engine before so not sure that would be quicker for me?
Dawda The Mechanic You have to put up a video on removing the N57 3.0 engine. 😂
@@henrisundberg4082 alright that's good to hear👍
There was someone here that commented few months back and doing this job on a x5. He removed the engine becuse of the oil sump.
You need to first remove the gearbox, wiring, ac gas and coolant. Engine will come out from the top.
It will take long time to do.
Information is all good. But it’s as if you attached a GoPro too a goat. Camera work is so poor. Had to give up.
good explanation, but hell, you hold you camera in wrong way.
most probably very hard to work on the car show you everything with limited space since he left the engine out, if you care about camera quality watch someone who removes the engine he did a great job considering the circumstances
Heeei! You didn't install oil pump sprocket correctly!!! Wrong side! Check side when you took it off!!! You have tightened it to the oil pump, but not to the oil pump shaft 200%.
This is the reason why my bolt and sprocket disconnected from oil pump shaft 7000 km after chain change, and as a result causing no oil pressure and after 5 miles broken turbo!
how much cost me all these please? (bmw f10 2001)
Sorry I don't have my own garage yet to do this job. Am currently working for VW dealership at the moment. Thanks 👍

@Nagato is better than Punk Naruto This might be a dumb question, I don’t have much mechanical knowledge but I’m going to try to do this on my own n47 engine. When you’re putting the flywheel back on and realligning it with the locking tool, should the crankshaft also allign with the tipex or are they separate?

@Nagato is better than Punk Naruto wonderful. Thank you!
@Nagato is better than Punk Naruto oh by the way did you mean the high pressure fuel pump or the oil pump? Also is it 45 degrees clockwise or anti-clockwise (seen from the back of the engine)?
brilliant video. I have followed your video to replace my timing chain. I have a question, I have the timing tool. but I don't have the crankshaft locking tool. I also took your advice to take my camshaft out to inspect the rocker arms. Everything is perfect. Now, when I put back the camshaft.
