I'm surprised that it was that easy to get the original motor out, with some of the 'horror stories' I've read. A lot of folks have said to liberally lubricate the nylon gears with Lithium Grease (some even pack a load of grease inside the case), but I don't know how essential that would be. The original motor looked very clean and the gears did not appear to be worn down (probably has a lot to do with how 'rough' a person is in their riding style). This has encouraged me to think more seriously about making the swap myself - Thank You, Sir! :)
Both motors came out and went in smoothly, it was pretty easy. if i were to do it again, i would add some grease, good point i didn't think of that, but i'm not super hard on my motors, the original one did still look pretty good. i wouldn't hesitate to do another swap in the future, you could surely handle it :)

Two 1 gallon paint cans under handlebars is a good stand. Park freewheel tool for ebike designed to go over the plug/wire. Under $10. Case is built to use a torque driver to remove and install. Tough with a screwdriver. If the new motor is upgrad to stock, I would use it as it came and rebuild wheel spokes.

Thing-is about Rad is that you get a lot of bike for a low price but for another thousand dollars (& up) other bikes are everything the Rads aren't, bigger batteries, better brakes, more powerful motors and controllers... I just got one with a Bafang Ultra mid-drive motor, actually the most powerful motor available on a production bicycle and that's immediatly obvious when you ride it, another from the same company which I get in a couple of weeks is a Juiced Scrambler clone with a REAL Bafang 1,000 watt nominal hub motor, time will tell with that one but has a good reputation btw subscribed 🤗
Hi there, I am from Vancouver Canada and have been following your channel for a little while. I was trying to buy a radrunner plus from Seattle and bring it back to Canada since the Canadian laws are stricter than u.s. and only allow 500 watt motor Max. Hence the local dealer near me only sells to 500 watt a 500 watt version. Then in one of your videos you mentioned that you suspected the US version is not a true 750w motor. Then it got me thinking that the same Factory is really only making one model and programming the controller differently for each country. Based on the images seen in your motor swap where you had the two Motors side by side it is clear that the stock motor that came with rad is not a true 750 w. Based on information from your videos I decided to buy the bike locally and to upgrade the motor and battery at a later date. Though I don't even have the bike yet I do enjoy watching all your videos. Somewhat related, I commute daily on a 2000 watt electric unicycle with a 1600 watt hour battery. Too bad they don't have the same size motor and battery kits for the rad :-)
Taking the rear wheel off and on gets MUCH easier. I can do it with my eyes closed now, but at first it was scarey hard b/c the assemblers at Juiced Bikes in China installed my rear wheel totally wrong, so my torque sensor wasn't even working.
Great video. The screws are called Torx security screws AKA star screws or bolts. I am certainly anxious to see the test results. But with the different freewheel especially since it didn’t have the lower first gear, I’m not sure how to take the results. Perhaps the speed results and resulting current draw may show something. Thx again. This video is really helpful.
when i do the speed tests i do them with the throttle only, so the different freewheel shouldn't affect anything there since i'm not pedaling. as for daily riding and the power/torque feeling when pedaling i suppose it could affect that. will be interesting to see what performance gains i get from these upgrades. glad you found the video helpful and thank you for watching and commenting. :)
check your hanger for the derailleur. It is easy to bend. make sure it hangs straight. Bending it usually screws up one gear. It has a guard to keep it from bending. The guard should not touch it. After you bump it a few times it will touch, then any bump will bend the derailleur.
Thanks for the heads-up about the hanger. I just got a RadMini ST and I have one gear that messes up. The mechanic tried to fix it upon delivery, but it started again the next day. I might point him in that direction (or have a look myslef first).
Another great vid. Because of you I ordered myself a 2020 rad rover step thru, can't wait to get it, not until August their telling me. Oh well ,from what I see it'll be worth the wait. Thanks
I can tell you I have had mine a week now and its worth the wait . very easy to assemble out of the box . It took me all of an hour and it was good to go.
could you elaborate ? I was considering this to on my stock radwagon 36T :) which cuts off at 30 kph "freewheeling" basically. How about steep hills with the 52t ?
52T. Chainring will give you better top speed, but the bike will not climb as well. It also may cause the motor to heat up. But yes you will definitely get a higher top speed.
Watching this 3 year old video, laughing to myself when you said, I know nothing about this stuff (or something like that). Oh my, how things have changed!! I'm in the middle of completely rebuilding a Rover 5 I bought for $200, that died in Hurricane Ian almost 2 years ago. The only 2 salvageable parts are the frame and the rear wheel, the motor is done. I was just gonna use my original Rover motor I saved when I did my upgrade, but this video reminds me how wimpy it is. Gonna buy the real 750.
Damn good idea, I did not know this was possible. I was going to do it the long way which is lacing a new motor onto old tire. To save time I am going to try your method. Thanks bud nice job 👍

I was going to buy a super 73 until i read all the horror stories about it on reddit. During research, i figured out that building these bikes is pretty easy. I found a scrambler style frame for sale and a 1000w 20 x 4 motor. I used to be a mechanic so i should be able to figure this all out

Good information. More on the freewheel. I also have the 2018 RR. I thought I had a 11 tooth on the smallest freewheel gear, as I read on a forum. But counted just now to be a 14 tooth, like what you have and what was sent to you. I went to the RPB site and it shows a 11 tooth for the newer model. Must have changed it at some point. Maybe because I suggested they go with a larger chainring, ( increased mine to the 48T) and a smaller 11t on the rear freewheel. I don't care about the "megarange" gear because I never need to shift gears, I never go slow enough, not even on hills.
That stock motor looks like a 36 volt 350 watt model that's just being overvoltaged to 48 volts/750 watts but it still only has the torque of a 350 watter as compared to the real thing, many comments on Rad bikes not being very good with hills if at all, it does look very small...
Great Video Thank You for posting .I Love all your E Bike videos . I have a 2020 Rad Rover Step Thru 1 have as of today 183 miles on it ,mostly off road mountain trails loving everything about it .
Hi Billy, thanks for the kind words and support, glad you are liking my videos! Enjoy that bike, maybe someday in the future you will upgrade it too or post some ebike videos of your own, i dont have any offroad mountain videos on mine yet :)
What controller set up are you using? I am installing 750watt too (Bolton Bikes) upgrade kit. I hear 25 amps s the best pairing. Then I hear I could do 30amps but not 35. Please advise people talk but you have direct every day bike ride proof.
I used the 35A controller w/ colored display from Bolton Ebikes. It pairs very well with the 7true 750watt motor. I extensively watched his video on how to set the controller up and have zero issues with it. The stock battery does not last as long at full speed. But with the entire setup you will not need the full pedal assist. So I think it balanced out a bit. I am however going to add a Bolton 48v battery in parallel with the stock battery. When I do that I will post a video. I hope this helps. Anything else do not hesitate to ask. I’m still looking for the web site for the correct freewheel removal tool that will fit over the cable end. I do know that there are two companies out there including Rad Power Bikes that sell them.
Got my motor but took a month to arrive! Your old motor looks in good shape wasn’t able to see copper wires but looks good. They say these motors can take over volting and your motor is proof of that. Will take a look at mine when it comes out. Might do it myself watching you gave me confidence. Bolton Bikes still hasn’t sent the upgrade kit been almost 2 months now. Let me know if you ran 35 amps through your original motor or 30 amps or 25 amps. Thanks! Also you incorrectly identified the trailer as a trailer- it is a man cave (and no women allowed!). Now got something special to tell yah your gonna like this. I purchased the Juiced Bikes Hyper Scorpion that right...Hyper Scorpion! Probably wait six months to get it. Let me know about how much amperage you ran through Rads motor?
yes i didn't notice anything wrong with my stock motor. i'm glad the video might have inspired you to take on the swap yourself. my controller is from bolton and is 35 amps so that was what i was running thru the original motor and didn't have any issues. and its "mobile man cave" to be exact!! :) that Hyperscorpion looks like a BEAST of a bike. hope you get it quick, and post a vid on it!!
CitizenCycle Traveling man cave I want one! If I had had one of those I might have stayed married- man needs a place for himself. As to controller very good to hear. Others tell me this that or the other. Like they know because they know. Good to have you “showing us in real time”. That we can “see for ourselves” and contrast that to what we hear and read. Appreciated!
Derailer just needs to be adjusted via the barrel adjustment screw going into the it at the end of the cable. Simply flip it over, put it into third gear and rotate it until it's in line and not noisy.
Nice job, I would have (shudder) used a drop of 'Locktite' on the screws when sealing the hub and to tighten the 'free-wheel', an old length of chain to use as a wrench. :) (I would bet that the 3rd gear set is bent somewhere along the circumference...
I think it would have been easier to just swap the wheel and spokes over to the new hub if it all matched up which it probably did. Building a wheel is super easy especially the smaller wheels with short spokes.
Hmm, this motor doesn't have the upgraded grey gears the MAC motors have or had, can't seem to find the mac motors any more since em3ev went mid drive only. I'd be weary about hot rodding this with white gears...... Thanks for the video, nice to know what gears it's got 🙂
I tried this with my rad plus six and it didn't work. The bolts were just ever so slightly different. No I did see someone on here that just kind of made it work and he said he put the bolts in on a little bit of an angle which I think is crazy as f*** but he did it and it worked. I ended up sending my motor back unfortunately. I'm patiently waiting for a thousand watt one of these days. I'm thinking I'm just going to buy the motor with the rim already set up. I do have a battery blender and a 10 amp hour battery coming so we'll see how that goes. I do have the 35 amp controller already. I'm a pretty big boy I'm too 70 and it pulls me around here just fine but we always want bigger stronger better don't we lol. Anyway I like your content and keep up the good work. Also if you have any suggestions about a thousand Watt where I can get one please let me know
Well done man.. you did a very good job on that bike.. I'm looking at getting more power on my MTB-bike from the 250W Bafang hub motor but not sure if I should go for the 500W or the 750W.. if anyone can give me some info I would be grateful.🤫👍
That's nice to be able to flip your bike upside down to take your tire off. I have two four stroke builds. You can't do that with a 4-stroke. Changing a tire on the side of the road is a nightmare.
Thanx A Bunch, my man! Confirmed smaller motor, that's why we steered clear of Rad. I just ordered the 750 watt motor from electro bike work and noticed my motor isn’t as “beefy” as the one you installed. I looked on the website and it says “the newer model 750 is smaller with more copper wire for efficiency”. I’m not convinced the “new” 750 watt bafang motor is as good as the old one. You’re performance gains were very significant, especially in torque. The new motor didn’t increase my torque???
Very helpful. Just swapping in my motor. I couldn't get the freewheel off even with the tool from Rad. As to what happens if the screw gets messed up I can tell you it's a world of pain. I've had to drill it out. Next step is to tap a new thread and go from there. Now back to it on a misty day in East Anglia UK.
I couldn't find a "results video". Did upgrading the motor improve the performance? In theory the bigger motor has more rotor windings and thus should provide more torque (assuming the controller can provide additional current). More torque should equal better acceleration.
Just saw your vid here. Ever think of a plumbers strap wrench or a strap wrench for oil filter changes? The plumber strap is a big bar with what looks like a length of bisycle chain on it.
Did you notice that the new upgrade 750watt motor is a little noisier than the stock motor? I did the swap and agree that it was very straight forward and easy. Everything works great and smoothly, however, the motor does sound louder. I do not know if it is because it is bigger and more powerful and normal, or what? I did a side by side comparison with a friends stock Radrover and there is a noticeable difference. Any comments? Thanks for the great videos.
Hi i purchased a 750 w tad rhino 3 yrs ago..before eu restriction law came in.../ so is that a 750w or 500w..rad sild it as 750w..also where did u get the new motor.? Thanks
im just curious/..... you didnt show how the brake goes onto the rotor... mechanical brakes or hydraulic?? nice video bro.. im impressed since you didnt have bike knowledge.. i paid someone $110 to swap out a rear tire (including parts) on my lectric bike
Super easy to adjust gear there's one adjusting screw. Turn 1\4 turn increments in one direction to start with until gear doesnt jump anymore but if it gets worst turn back adjusting screw to original position and turn screw in other direction with 1\4 turn increments until it doesnt jump .If that doesnt fix it there's another problem . Also was the new freewheel first gear easier or harder to pedal because on a stock Rover first gear has 34 teeth the new first gear has how many teeth ?Thanks for the video
Hey Citizen Cycle - Did you ever get the third gear resolved and what was the issue? I'm still waiting on my controller and 750 watt motor from EBW and wanted to be prepared when it arrives.
I got my Rad 6 and the steering was hard sometime and with 45 miles on the Bike the head stem came loose , i open the head stem and looked and there was No Top Bearing in the sleeve at all and it was making powder out of the split racer made of aluminum . / Can't win the Lottery , i can get the first bike sent out without a bearing and had to fix some crap that happen when i had to get a ride home , / like the bike without the BS
I'm looking forward to your report on how the two motors compare. I know that my Veego 750 ebike has a lot more "oomph" going up hills then my sister's comparable 750 Rad bike does. Question about your spoke covers - did those come with the bike or did you add them? If you did add them, did you have to remove or loosen the spokes to do so?
I added the spoke covers myself, bought them from amazon, they have a split down the middle so no need to remove or loosen spokes, you just wrap them around the spoke, is a little tricky and tedious but really changes the look of the wheels.
I believe my crew dart v1 has a no name brand 750 watt rear motor i wonder if I can do this swap. I would like to know if the swap makes noticeable difference also
Great informative video. If I just have to replace / fix the planetary (3 gear thingy) gear. Do I need to pull the freewheel gears off with the special socket ??
had a rad rover couple years ago, love the vids. I am now waiting for my Bolton bike to arrive. Odd question for you, what watch do you wear and what is that bracelet that looks like a watch bracelet? (I run a watch UA-cam channel) thanks.
i wear a Citizen's Eco-Drive watch, (very fitting right..) not sure on the model number but i've owned it for about 10 years now and its still going strong. i wear it everyday of my life no matter what i'm doing. the thing has been virtually indestructible! love it to death! my bracelet is about 5 yrs old, it has no markings on it of any kind, not sure what brand, i just went into a jewelry store and told them i wanted a really wide bracelet that looked like a watch band, we picked one out of their catalog and ordered it. was cheap, like $150. i should have bought 2 in case anything happens to this one. i knew it was a matter of time before someone noticed those and commented :) you are observant.
If you can do that you certainly can adjust the derailleur it’s just a couple of screws. Go to park tools on YT they have a great video for adjusting the derailleur.
Great upgrade post. I saw some people asking about power changes. There's a guy on UA-cam called SuPRCooPr who did this upgrade. In his Vlog 3 he is talking about the torque and top-end speed. He said a lot more torque and he had it up to 29 on flat ground motor only. I would expect that with the higher amperage and a true 750 watt motor. I was curious what you think of the quality of the gears in there. To me that's the weakest link in a power upgrade. Keep them lubed. Lol. PS, I checked out Electro Bike World and it looks like the place to go for RR power upgrades. I'm still waiting on my controller from the other gentleman.
I finally got my controller from that other guy and it’s great. I’m truly disappointed to learn that radpower did indeed use 500 watt, or smaller, motors while calling them 750’s.
He has another video stating that his speed increased to 36 mph with upgraded motor, upgrded controller and battery. It's on his channel. ua-cam.com/video/nmg0n0fB_O4/v-deo.html

MY WIFES LITTLE RAD MINI SOARS PAST ME ON THE HILLS! I CAN ONLY ASSUME HERS SPROCKET TEETH DIFFERENCE PROVIDES THE EXTRA TORQUE IN CLIMBING AS I SOAR PAST HERS COASTING ON THE FLAT!! I PUT THE HIGHER OUTPUT NEEDS IN MY CONTROLLER, JUST BOOSTED HERS A CPL MPH!! , THAT BEING SAID RAD POWER BIKE REGULAR DISC BRAKE SET UP IS KIND OF LAME AND CONSTANTLY IN NEED OF ADJUSTMENT, SO WE ARE UPDATING TO HYDRAULIC ON OUR REAR BRAKES FOR STARTERS ! **IN GOD WE TRUST**
Thank You for pointing me to Electro bike world !!
Thanks, looking forward to seeing if the road test results are different.
Me too!
Can’t see myself doing this, but great job and completely fascinating 🙏
Did you get the bike??
If so how are your liking it.
Im in Vancouver also and thinking about getting this bike.
Taking the rear wheel off and on gets MUCH easier. I can do it with my eyes closed now, but at first it was scarey hard b/c the assemblers at Juiced Bikes in China installed my rear wheel totally wrong, so my torque sensor wasn't even working.
I like the videos you post. Hoping to get a Rad4 in the near future. Look forward to seeing your next video. Take care.
Cool, seems I can maybe change the motor inside my case as well. Without the need of taking out spokes. Thanks for the video.
I don’t have an e-bike but the videos you provide are making me want one! I think the Cyrusher XF900.
Bafang 750 Watt FreeWheel Removal Tool, Bolton Ebikes has a tool that fits over the electrical plug to remove/install a cassette on an ebike.
When yu mount the bike, hold the rear brake and put pressure on the pedal to tighten your freewheel
check your hanger for the derailleur. It is easy to bend. make sure it hangs straight. Bending it usually screws up one gear. It has a guard to keep it from bending. The guard should not touch it. After you bump it a few times it will touch, then any bump will bend the derailleur.
will check this, thank you!
It took me all of an hour and it was good to go.
well i wish you a speedy delivery! I think you're going to have a blast on it.
Moving to a 52T Chainring is a HUGE performance upgrade.
You will not find anything better for the cost.
could you elaborate ? I was considering this to on my stock radwagon 36T :) which cuts off at 30 kph "freewheeling" basically. How about steep hills with the 52t ?
@@Ematuresco
stock radwagon 46T?
52t should still be fine for the heavy radwagon
52T. Chainring will give you better top speed, but the bike will not climb as well. It also may cause the motor to heat up. But yes you will definitely get a higher top speed.
What I'm anxious to see is whether or not the motor will overheat in very long, steep hills.
Great video! I respect you’re courage doing something like that!
BRAVO! Love the videos, love the quality and editing. Content is great.
you're too kind!! :) i'm trying to put out some useful content that might also inspire some folks.
Thank you for the video, well done, let us know if you get the same or more range with the new motor.
Damn good idea, I did not know this was possible. I was going to do it the long way which is lacing a new motor onto old tire. To save time I am going to try your method. Thanks bud nice job 👍
My bet would be on the New Bafang motor , not the stock rad would like to hear what you think of them compared to each other .
You are a funny guy. Yes, North Carolina. Hot and humid. I used to live in Hendersonville.
AW, YES, I SEE YOU'VE DONE YOUR BOLTON RESEARCH, GRASSHOPPER...
GOOD FOR YOU, GREAT JOB...JUST GOT MY HIMIWAY STEP THRU...
SEE YA DOWN THE ROAD, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK😜😆🤔😎😷
I needed this video as I’m about to follow your footsteps and install this upgrade in my 2020 Radcity 👍
I think the rad city's have a direct drive motor don't they..??? this swap wouldn't work.
@@CitizenCycle925 hmmm you are correct. Direct drive. I emailed electro bike world for clarification. 👍👍
Great video mate, I have the big tyre mud bike version E-Bike using your video was able to change motor quite easily.
Excellent. Thx. Gonna swap out my wife’s Baggi bike 500w for the 750
Top tip regarding the axle cutout thanks. Time saver.
So, "in a nutshell".....We were lied to. Nice!!
True Wattage from my understanding is contentious nonstop wattage draw without overheating . That is not peak wattage .
you get what you paid for.
@@3eye-hatrick I really do love my custom Rad, whether it's what is advertised or not. Getting ready to buy some more power for the beast soon. Can't wait for better weather!
@@3eye-hatrick I generally don't get a chance to ride in the Winter months mainly because of lack of daylight. By the time daily responsibilities are over, it's too cold. Winter in the North-east is just not what I want to be riding in, unless we get an unusual warm/fair day, I can't enjoy it.
It is the motor controller that boosts it to almost 750 watts
I was going to buy a super 73 until i read all the horror stories about it on reddit. During research, i figured out that building these bikes is pretty easy. I found a scrambler style frame for sale and a 1000w 20 x 4 motor. I used to be a mechanic so i should be able to figure this all out
Good for you!!! and good luck!
Very informative. Looking to upgrade mine and i haven't even got it yet
haha, give it a while before you upgrade!!!
Boy, this is really interesting! I want to find out if there's any performance difference. I'm glad you are doing this. If you could show us how to tune the derailleur, that I would love to know. Keep up the great work!
i will surely post performance results after i do some testing, need to make sure i have the setting programmed correctly for the new motor. we will see how it goes with the derailleur and if i can get it fine tuned.
@@CitizenCycle925 do u think I can get 1,000w gear motor for my himiway?
@@dimitrimcintosh8858 if you find out, let me know. I’ve been thinking about upgrading my 750 watt hub motor to a 1000 watt hub motor, but I can’t even find any. Do 1000 watt hub motors even exist?
@@CitizenCycle925 it appears you upgraded your 500 watt motor to a 750 by their size. Did you have to change anything else or did you just drop a 750 watt motor into a 500 watt Bike and Go
@@RandallBalls I also changed the display and the controller

Dude, you will notice a big difference from the get go. As long as your controller is set up correctly. Well worth it, now go ride!
yes i need to do my research on the correct settings for gear reduction ratio, etc.
Simply flip it over, put it into third gear and rotate it until it's in line and not noisy.
thanks, that is same thing the videos i have been watching have said so hopefully the fix is that easy!!!!
Great job as always. Will def reference this when my time comes to upgrade
Welcome to the 750 club, CC Rider
Do you know if The Himiway can be upgraded to a 1000W motor?
Also if you have any suggestions about a thousand Watt where I can get one please let me know
Nice job. On this vid, the angle of the front fork seams a bit bended back compared to the angle of the frame
probably result of trying to use camera in a small space.(my trailer) nothing is bent :)
I love your trailer dude
Great Instructional Video!
Changing a tire on the side of the road is a nightmare.
very true
Thanx A Bunch, my man! Confirmed smaller motor,
that's why we steered clear of Rad. Nicely paced explanation and tutorial of the motor swap for a backyard hack like myself.

Well done. Thanks for another great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very helpful.
The gear inside my old one stripped so I just got the new one today... new project
Good work my friend! anybody know if this change is possible for the RadRunner 1?
I have the Rad Runner 1 and sure you can, you need the 35a Controller & KT-LCD8H Rad Combo & the 48 - 60v 750w Bafang geared rear hub motor.
Fixing to do this on my Super 73 z1 just waiting on my new controller and battery
Thanks

I was wondering how the hell you were supposed to swap motors, taking the casing off makes sense now lol
O I have been waiting for this video
hahaha, well hopefully you find it useful or at least entertaining!!!
Resolved, derailleur just needed adjustment. Shifts perfect now
I got my Rad 6 and the steering was hard sometime and with 45 miles on the Bike the head stem came loose , i open the head stem and looked and there was No Top Bearing in the sleeve at all and it was making powder out of the split racer made of aluminum .
@@CitizenCycle925 Thanks for the reply. They look really nice. I am pretty sure that I am going to do the same.
Brilliant vid, how long would you say the process took overall, an hour or so?
took be about 1.5 hours. i was definitely taking my time so i didn't mess up.

Any problems with that new motor since the install? The video is 4 years old. Prob have to do it.
had a rad rover couple years ago, love the vids.
Yes rad should put a real 750w motor in
can NOBODY clarify on the performance difference , or was that swap just an exercise in futility!
He has another video stating that his speed increased to 36 mph with upgraded motor, upgrded controller and battery. It's on his channel.

Is there grease on the nylon planetary gears and/or the 3 planetary gear axles? If so, any idea what type of grease (lithium or a lighter grease or real tacky thick grease?) I'm really hoping for an answer as I will be taking mine apart this winter to check condition and regrease if necessary. Thanks in advance!
Awesome! Thanks for posting, I was waiting for you to do this install. One question, did you lube/grease the gears before putting back in?
i did not add any additional grease, but you are right i probably should have just to make sure it continues to run smoothly.
Do you know what you the torque spec is on the screws on the hub motor cover? I am working on the Magicycle motor replacement, so I don’t know if they’re much different from the red rover?
