my sp-404sx alwayz been one of my weapons of choice along with my ASR-X and Mpc one....been rocking with the Sp-404sx for years never made to the trash never but dope vid....subscribed now fam
Definitely will work on this all week! I have a MPC Live and SP-404A, but I've been gravitating to my SP more and more, and I'm really trying to learn all I can. Appreciate the tutorials bro!🙏🏾✊🏾
@@_sugr.skull_ Don't get me wrong.. I love my MPC Live, and that's my main piece of gear, but I just love rocking out with the SP for some reason lol! The effects, the crispy sounds, and the little things about the SP make it so much fun. I'm a long time emcee, but new to beat making, and I bought my MPC almost a year ago, and the deeper I got into the beat community, particularly on UA-cam, is when I saw more and more SP videos, and learned a lot of music I loved from different producers actually used it so I grabbed mine in May of this year, and I love it!
One thing I will say is this I had all sp series from the very first 202 to the 555 and the recent one except the 303 is these are fun machines for basic looping and experimenting with the effects. Chopping and looping.
They definitely are! I have the 202, 303 & 404A...I love them all and use them a lot, I just wanted to show some the techniques I use to get the most out of them.
This is the best I've heard drums sound on the SP-404. Just curious if you prefer the sound of a beat chopped up like this than using sample packs (such as Goldbaby for example)?
@@_sugr.skull_ Thanks a lot for your thoughts. I was starting to think of my SP-404A as useless for drums because I haven't heard it sound as good as the Analog Rytm or Digitakt when loaded with 1 shot samples. I'll definitely have to get chopping and trying out the techniques in your video! :)
@@_sugr.skull_ Thanks! :) That sounds like more work again lol. One more question...There seems to be a lot of work overall in making a good sounding beat on this compared to the Rytm where I can simply enter some steps and it already sounds good. What makes it worth it for you, that the SP-404 has a unique vibe? Or would you say it's actually really easy and quick to make a beat once you get used to it?
It's 100% about the vibe! I actually mostly use a combination of resampling and the pattern sequencer...but overall the vibe I get from using the SP's is pretty much unmatched. I've owned a Digitakt, and although it's great, the vibe was pretty much the same as I'd get using my DAW, so it wasn't worth keeping. My mindset is basically if a piece of gear inspires you and has you thinking and creating in different ways, then it's a keeper.
It was chunks of drum breaks. I think this is very exciting idea. I hope you to share the more tips of SP404. In japan, there are few videos about sp tips.
Hey man, awesome video and very likeable personality! question; on that first technique, did you layer those additional kicks, snares & hats under the original ones or did you rotate on which ones to use, didnt quite catch that. Thank you!
🙏 thank you so much! I really appreciate that!! For the first technique I didn’t layer anything, all I did was chop out the individual kicks, snares and hats and rearrange them ☺️
Ok thank you for answering! one more thing, when boosting those lows twice like that. Are the chances for low frequencey muddiness much higher? especially in context with the other low frequency instruments, like bass and sometimes chords etc? @@_sugr.skull_
@grunntalll no problem :) ya, there’s often a fair bit of muddiness in these tracks, but in my opinion all the muddy frequencies can be a nice character in this style of music…and if it’s too much you can also fix it in your daw with a precise EQ cut.
Lots of people don't like the lack of dynamics, but I was really just being cheeky with the title. These are just some tricks that I like to use to liven up my drums on the SP's.
@@_sugr.skull_ Fair, I guess the sp is really limited if you're not down to experiment. Stuff like your c canceller drum break trick are the reason I love it so much. Makes you think outside the box in really rewarding ways. Limitation breeds creativity!
This was fun- don’t have a 404 but this gave me some inspiration to keep layering and tweaking thangs on the gear I do have. It’s fun to see people fiddle with this box. Reminds me a bit of the time I spent playing with effects on the my electribe emx1. Cheers!
Budda Da Buddha You will be a good director, I can see your ideas right through these vids, all you need is a stabilized manual focus DSLR and a little shooting & color grading knowledge. Keep rocking and you will get there!!!!
Lol right now I'm shooting these on my Samsung S8 with a cheap little tripod and using a lamp with a day time bulb while facing window for my lighting 😂 I definitely plan to upgrade at some point, but you have to start somewhere. lol

Thanks so much man!! I was just kidding with the whole trash thing, but ya it's one of my main pieces too.

Really? Why do you think you've been gravitating to the SP?

I feel you, I love my SP too. definitely a tool that should be in every beatmakers arsenal.
What was the reason you started preffering the sp over the live
Just tried this, WOW. Much appreciated
Glad it helped!!

Thank you so much! I definitely prefer the sound of a chopped up drum break, there's just so much more texture and nuance.

It's my pleasure! I'm glad you got some inspiration out of it. Best is when you mix a chopped up beat with one shots. Have fun!!! 🔥🔥🔥

I love that technique! I definitely will, I've fallen off with my UA-cam the last few months, but I'll definitely be getting more posted soon! 👍

No worries!
Just subscribed I’m trying to get more in to my sp404sx these tips are awesome. 🙂
That's awesome! Thank you so much!!...it's a fantastic fantastic little box; but I won't lie, it took me a few months to really get into mine as well.
Like with anything it’s how you use the gear
100%
Great video!
Thanks so much!
Never heard anyone accuse the 404 of being bad for drums? Is that a thing?

Did you find it difficult to remove the Loopmasters sticker from your SP-404A?
No, it peeled off pretty easy for me.
Amazing video. 🙏🏾
Thank you so much! It's really appreciated!!
Hi. What do you thing about app Koala sampler?
Honestly, I've never tried it. It looks pretty cool though.
good tutorial. instant sub.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
OMG. THIS. IS. AMAZING. so dope. 👌
Thank you!! Glad you liked it 🙏
AMAZING!!

Thanks so much!
Nobody thinks the SP drums sound trash
It was just tongue in cheek, not meant to be taken seriously.
They aren’t great dynamics wise
sick
Thank you so much bro 🙏
Why didn’t you just use the Subsonic effect? That’s what you’re looking for.
Subsonic is a cool effect, but I hadn’t really messed around with it at the time. Plus this give a more “lofi” sound in my opinion.
My choice - Chunks of the Drumbreak :)
Yes! Definitely my favorite technique as well!
Cheesy transactions but dope advices!!! Subbed!!!
😂 I'm new to video editing, it'll get better lol I appreciate that though! 🙏

Budda Da Buddha BTW, you don’t need to add that much transactions, just cut it right through, give it a try~

Budda Da Buddha love this attitude, I’m also encouraged by you~

Always! Bass to taste erryday!
Close your eyes for John C. Reilly.
Lol...I don't get it 😂 ...but...thanks??...???
nah
All good bro...just some tips and tricks that I've found useful 👍
What misguided fool put their SP in the trash? When did that become a thing? Some good advice to be gleaned here, but the title is clickbait. Cheers!
😂 no one put their SP in the trash, it was just a joke, but I'm glad you enjoyed 👍
