- After the “Sopranos” finale aired on June 10, 2007, fans were left wondering what happened to Tony Soprano as he and his family ate onion rings at a New Jersey diner. As Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” played in the background, the show abruptly cut to black, leaving fans wondering what became of the HBO show’s antihero. Inside Edition met with cast members to hear their take on the controversial finale and visited the restaurant where the final scene was shot. #InsideEdition
The ending gives you an idea of what it would be like to be whacked. Lights out total silence and darkness.
Exactly! It's what they were going for!!
Nah it was an easy way to end the show without upsetting any fans. It left them to decide how it went. Pretty smart move. It made sure it didn't ruin an epic show
@@PM-vb4od i mean he throws clues at you the whole time. The hit men for new york were previously wearing members only jackets. He’s not supposed to hear a noice. And everything slows down just like when sil saw that guy get whacked. Not to mention the show revolves around the life of tony.... so it only makes sense for when he meets his demise for the whole show to meet its demise.
i strongly believe that the viewer was the one that got whacked not tony making it the craziest 4th wall break ever.
@@user-rk2xi7iw9k nah it was Tony that got whacked its very obvious
Rest In Peace James Gandolfini, one the most humble people on earth, no one ever said anything bad about him, and dude could act his ass off
He never did had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Agree
Apparently Harvey Weinstein didn't like him. That's great tho
Chrissy predicted the actor’s death
I heard he had actual anger issues in person but other then that yeah
He got clipped... Most of us didn't appreciate the genius of it then, but we sure do now 💯 What an incredibly written show
Nah terrible ending to arguably the greatest series of all time
@@kix5365 you kidding me what you want some idiotic ride off in the sunset ending lmaooo you that lazy to use your brain Tony died when you die it’s completely darkness no noise no nothing just you getting ready to meet your maker.
@@kix5365 Nah this ending is good
@@kix5365 speak for yourself
They should have showed it then. Worst ending of all time
Tony definitely got whacked. It’s all there in the last scene: bell rings, tony looks up, we see what he sees when he looks up. This happens over and over. Then the bell rings, Tony looks up, we see black, cause that’s what Tony sees - nothing because he’s dead.
Except when Meadow comes in and the bell rings, we don't see what Tony sees. We see Tony looking at the door.
@@johnp82 he got whacked it was accidentally confirmed by the creator
@@johnp82 very obvious and clues were given throughout the show
@@michaelsamael2307 except the show isn't a puzzle. It's equally as likely they finished their onion rings and ordered dinner.
@@michaelsamael2307 He referred to it as "the death scene", that doesn't mean Tony got killed. It means he COULD have been killed. If David Chase wanted to know for a fact Tony got killed he would've showed it.
Better ending than Game of Thrones.
LG WAY BETTER
I’ve had colonoscopies with better endings!!
It was a much better show in general.
Any ending is better than the game of thrones ending
But not Breaking Bad
Even the music stopped too
Ray Mak hiii
Everything stopped ... pretty obvious
That’s what happens when you die.
Of course you would say that
Yes Tony was 100 percent shot in this scene. There was way to much foreshadowing before it and clues like when Bobby said you won't hear it when it happens and there's more clues than that to if you watched every episode of season 6 then you'll realize there is no other explanation to what happend. Tony was very dead after this scene
Also when Tony says to Dr. Melfi he believes death is a black nothingness. Something along those lines anyway.
The you won't hear it when it happens line doesn't hold up because the very person who said it very clearly heard himself get shot. No sound cuts there
@@TylerSmith-sd2oc so?
@@daph0307 so using that as a point towards Tony's death is invalidated if you consider what happened to the person who said it? How is that not obvious
@@TylerSmith-sd2oc is "obvious", but not plausible. In fact I could ask: "how is it not obvious is not plausible"? Just because the guy who said it heard it...? Is that it? But the guy it was said to died without hearing it. How is that not obvious, again?
David Chase made everyone talk about his show for years. Pretty genius ending.
James Gandolfini is such a great actor. I'm so sad he passed away. May his sould rest in peace.
The show immediately died when Tony died. That's absolute genius.
So im 20 yrs late. I just binged watch the entire series on my staycation. I actually liked the ending. It says that he is okay for now, but will never be safe, he will always have to look over his shoulder.
Exactly!
I agree with this as well. David Chase himself said it's all there on screen. That tells me that if Tony was killed, we would have seen something. Saying Tony was killed is like saying Joker was killed after the ending of The Killing Joke.
@@Gregnetic nah he definitely died and chase had been alluding to it for quite some time. Plus the whole show revolved around tony. So it only makes sense for the show to end when tony ends.
Don’t know if this response will mean anything considering it was 11 months ago but I just finished the show as of last night, and my interpretation was that he was in fact murdered. I later found out that David Chase said he was in fact killed.

This ending really went over alot of ppls heads
Because it’s ambiguous
@@sergeanttentacles1359 imagine if this came out today, Twitter would be a shitstorm wanting answers. But since this was in 2007 it was very limited on how you really felt about The Sopranos ending scene, thus this flashback from Inside Edition.
Agreed! It just takes some analysis. Which is why live viewers were so disappointed. I feel the show creators were ok with that short term disappointment and buzz in order to have a more meaningful and poignant resonance later on for fans of show who take the time to consider it.

"It won't be cinematic" After finishing the Sapranos that line from Patsy hits hard.
David Chase revealed by accident as to calling it the "Death Scene".
Yeah, he did
Yea he did but the ? Is who had him killed Phil died butch and Tony made a truce so who was it
I see that as just a mistake by him, he’s always said and tried to make clear that it’s up to your interpretation.
I know he intended it originally being Tony’s death scene but later changed it to be ambiguous which is why he probably refers to it as a death scene.
pgh steerlers it was butchie. He wants to be the boss in NY, he used tony to kill phil to take over NY. And he cant be implicated in phil's murder if he pursues the original hit plan on tony and new jersey after phil got whacked. He tied loose ends. A win win for him. He becomes boss, new jersey was weakened.
The show screen writer confirmed that it was a "death scene"
If you saw the final 2 episodes, then you would know that the threat against Tony's life was eliminated prior to the final dinner.
MotherTouching-Ninjas he might’ve been wacked, small chance, just as small as him not being indicted, I think he ended up rotting in prison
He was going to jail regardless
There’s a look Paulie gives tony I think it’s there last scene together at satrialies. Paulie looks at tony when he leaves knowing he’s going to die
Plenty of proof that he died, including recent statements from the creator. Paulie and Patsy had it done, possibly in collusion with Butch/New York
@@jantopia69 that sounds like an even worse ending.
Tony first walks in, sees himself already sitting there. Like Christafuh said, he's in hell- in a loop. Playing over and over and he gets whacked the same way every night and never gets to see his daughters face, he doesn't even know when it happens...(My theory, I'm not 100% on it)
The order of the literary techniques relating to the door jingle, Tony's face followed by Tony's perspective- change when the members only guy enters the restaurant. Chase is letting us know this character is different. He also takes up 2/3 or the screen, according to Hitchcock indicating he's of more significance than AJ who is behind him or any other person that came through the door...
When Tony is in a coma, it's Meadows voice that draws him away from letting go and ultimately dying. The one thing that would more to him than anything else would be seeing his daughters face one more time and he never gets to. But as Meadow approaches, we hear the door jingle and when it would've switched to Tony's perspective- black. He gets whacked and he never sees it coming. I think Chase left enough room to be able to say it's ambiguous...but I think when he says "it's all there" he means it. One can choose to believe it means, "Don't stop believing in life and what matters most, the little things. Death comes for us all and whether Tony dies tonight or in the future, it's eventually happening." But I think the true intention of Chase was to have Tony whacked...
My only push back is that Tony very clearly notices this man. They share several glances, he watches him walk by and go to the bathroom leaving himself wide open for a shot. Why wouldn't Tony take action? At least go to the bathroom after him to see what he was doing? Unless he knew he was losing men, going to be indicted and just didn't care anymore...
I would add to this theory by saying I believe Tony died absolutely, maybe at this diner or somewhere else, but the fact he is already dead once he walks through the door. I notice the scene is full of metaphor symbols . That's the reason he's not too worried about members only guy because he knows what will happen & had been repeating this hell over & over already. His favorite scene in godfather was the Micheal restroom shoot scene, so that's how he chose to be killed in his hell. I guess if you're in hell it may be possible that all your past thoughts would incorporate into your personal hell
Never seen one in ages
He was still breathing when the scene ended. The end.
It didn't take too long to surmise the implication of what had happened. I think it was definitely lost on people who weren't able or willing to think about it critically for a bit. So most of the country being mad makes sense.
Nobodies going to
Mention the ominous message Chris brought from his stint in “hell”?
“He said, watch your 2 o’clock. Tony”
The killer is at Tony’s 2 in the last scene. Ground breaking series for that time. Really set the pace for what was to become of series in the future. Re watched the entire series the other day since I had stoped watching when season 6 came out, since highschool started. Yes I was young. But man the ending really it’s home now that james and some of the iconic cast really passed away. Great acting. Hope they can salvage something from this franchise especially after that trainwreck of a prequel they released.
There was so much foreshadowing. They should leave the series alone, Tos was a disaster

Tony was wacked. Carmine jr ordered the hit and took over the family. Paulie became head of the NJ family. Tony had to go along with Phil to end the fued that was causing too much trouble for everyone involved.
Why would Carmine jr order the hit? Just curious. They agreed phil had to go and could've just killed him in the spot, plus he never wanted to take over the family anymore.
@dale gribble who told you this? Send a link
bryant gouveia I think Tony was wacked. Only because I think you had those within the New York family who liked Phil and decided to kill Tony’s crew
Butch Deconcini then had Carmine Jr whacked and took over the entire thing.

And because we were not in the Mob, life goes on for us.
Tony wasn't whacked. Right as he was about to be shot by the Members Only guy, he was teleported to the USS Enterprise, which had come back in time for the purpose of finding two cetaceans to bring to the future. Picard felt Tony would have great insight on how to help them, since New Jersey is next to an ocean. The writers all admitted this in a drunken discussion I had with them while playing poker.
I think it left an opening that the show can return🙏
@Angel Valdovinos so sad he was so young

so many shows i heard about growing up, im 22 now just now watching the sopranos.. i love this show now, im not disappointed with the ending, this ending is amazing. its smart. keeps viewers on there toes even more haha! very talented actors and workers on the show.
Only people with room temp IQ thinks it’s a horrible ending.
The way I took it was the Member's Only guy appeared to be looking at Tony. They then reveal that he was just looking for the bathroom, which was just passed Tony from his point of view. He's one of a few sketchy people inside the restaurant that Tony seems very conscious of at all times.
With james gandolfini no longer with us, i think that can also give us some closure on tony soprano’s fate
At his "3 o'clock" just like Chris said.
It is a genius ending. The whole show you know how dangerous the lifestyle is. Once he whacked Christopher I felt like it was going to happen. When he talked to Bobby I was almost sure it was going to happen. Sure enough, the ending was perfect. Much like every other episode, you’re just a viewer of their lives, you don’t really get to judge any of the characters. They all have faults. And they all have good qualities too, at the end of the day though they did commit sins against god, and they had to answer for
It sooner or later

He died you see meadow taking 3 tries to park the car and there was 2 attempts on Tony’s life officially and the third time did it
That is a very interesting observation.
I read a comment saying meadow was like tony's guardian angel. Her voice actually prevented tony from passing on and also woke him up
he lived producer said so case closed
He respawns at nearest medical clinic
Stupid people: it didn't answer any questions.
Smart people: good
Well known fact of film if you don’t see the body or get word from a reputable source they’re probably still alive
Just so everyone knows he wasn't whacked, he was arrested.
My thing is we clearly see the girl approaching the restaurant and then it cuts to the bell and then black. To me she walked in lol
Well since they chose to not give us an ending, I’m going to just assume that he lived out the rest of his life happily ever after! 😊
Yeah the guy who walked into the bathroom. Came out and shot him from a 3 o’clock angle. When it went black that was his point of view.
Or Meadow's parking was like a 3 o'clock symbol and rushed in saw a gun in a hand and whipped out her gun and shot the hitman!! Everybody ducked and wounded hitman attempted to shoot Tony again and the black guys whipped their guns out shot him to death. I got this idea that Meadow her father's guardian angel and spoken in the last season about being a lawyer. She mentioned helping black people and protect them against the federal government. After all this Tony retired and Sil came out of the coma and took over. Sil ended Phil entirely gang with Carmine's blessing.
This ending is a masterpiece
It was his story, it ended with him
We just needed a yes or no
I always figured he had a heart attack.
100%. We saw what happened from Tony’s perspective. One moment you’re there, there next lights out. You wouldn’t even have time to register what happened
It’s about the Sopranos. He died. It’s over. Great series.
Paulie and patsy had him clipped 2 reasons. T was going to kill paulie and T had patsy twin wacked. It was just his time.
Even more foreshadowing might be one episode when a.j. is crying to Tony, he even mentions that the scene with al pacino killing the cop is Tony's fav scene from the godfather. In one episode someone mentions about being killed in a tracksuit, a few episodes later they killed mikey palmice in his track suit when hes jogging.
Lmaooo I’m soooo surprised Inside Edition legit made this video 😂🤣
WHY IS EVERYONE SAYING SECOND?! IVE SEEN LITERALLY 21 PEOPLE SAYING THAT
Of course he got whacked and I found this online which also helps prove that though it's not really a secret anyways:
Rocker STEVE PERRY refused to let THE SOPRANOS creator DAVID CHASE use his classic song DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' in the mob show's final scene until he knew the fate of the drama's leading characters.
The ex-Journey frontman kept Chase waiting until three days before the long-awaited finale aired in America on Sunday (10Jun07).
Perry is a huge Sopranos fan and feared his 1981 rock anthem would be remembered as the soundtrack to the death of James Gandolfini's character Tony Soprano - until Chase assured him that wouldn't be the case.
Perry says, "The request came in a few weeks ago and it wasn't until Thursday that it got approval, because I was concerned.
"I was not excited about (the possibility of) the Soprano family being whacked to Don't Stop Believin'. Unless I know what happens - and I will swear to secrecy - I can't in good conscience feel good about its use." And Perry was so true to his word, he didn't even tell his family the song featured in the finale.
He adds, "I didn't want to blow it. Even my wife didn't know. She looked at me and said, 'You knew that and you didn't tell me?'"
Who told NY where Tony would be eating?
The Members Only guy was probably following him, thats why he came in after Tony.
AJ'S girlfriend. She was a plant from NY.
3.
Think about it. 3 identical kids with the hats, 3 milk capsules with the coffee, 3 paintings and 3 lights in the back. When Varsity jacket passed his it was at his 3 o' clock and Meadow takes 3 tries to park, 3 times the charm, right? Tony has experienced 2 hits on him before this moment, and 3rd times the charm.

Only James Gandolfini can play Tony Soprano. Since that Great actor is gone then so is the character. It would be sacrilege to try and resurrect Tony or the show with someone new in the part. Tony Soprano is dead let him rest in peace.
They could have a spin off based around the family after Tony’s death. Make Tony a martyr like in Mayans Mc

It was the 2 "Black" guys that walked in. Yeah they did it....yeah those 2 guys.
I think people just didn’t understand the genius of the ending at the time it aired. There was no other show of this type back then. Not only did David Chase confirm that Tony did get whacked in the final scene but he says “it’s all there” which if you pay close enough attention throughout the whole series, him getting whacked would be the logical conclusion from that scene
It’s up to the viewer to decide
He got wacked by coronary heart disease. One fried onion ring too many. That's my take.
Tony and his family went into witsec. Tony turned rat after he curb stomped Coco. It doesn't make sense that Tony would get wacked. We have never seen that diner the entire show until this scene. No one would have know he would have been there at that exact moment.
AJ's girlfriend was in on it, she was a plant from the NY mafia. She was in the Sopranos house when they made plans to meet there.
The mafia finds a way
It wouldn’t have been hard to have one of the family members followed
Twas the onion rings that killed him 😪
