One thing you missed was the issue of the Carlos kid being taken by the cops for possession along with patsy's kid. Paty's other kid, the lawyer, is engaged to be married with meadow. Patsy may feel T is coming for him (note the tension in the gathering to talk about the wedding in final episode) and clips tony. That also explains how Patsy knew where Tony where - thru meadow and the son. Apart for this bit, fine job!
It was prob one of the rival crime families. The specifics were never revealed. But the point is there's no reason to believe he wasn't killed when the screen went black.
Fuckin A, dude, this same kind of comment has been made hundreds of times before you said it. Your profile pic suggests that you're nothing more than a meme follower, so do something original for once.
This ending always just felt so empathetic to Tony. We don't see the murder take place. We don't watch his loved ones grieve. We don't get to know what happens next. It's just over. For us, like it was for him.
Tony didn't die, the show itself died. It was a meta metaphor. Why people don't get this simple concept? Cut to black represents the ''film'' is ending. Thats why the last sentence we hear from the song is, ''Don't stop,''. The show itself says to itself, ''Don't stop,'' it also projects the audience's desire for the show to continue. That's it about the end. Whether Tony dies or not is not EVEN IMPORTANT. It is not about Tony. But sure, they implamented those thrilling composition to catch and trick the audience, the jacket guy, going to toilet etc. It is also there.
@@michaelgonzalez4819 common misconception. he actually didn’t, and he clarified that what is quoted as his “confirmation” of Tony’s death was misstated
@@thouzer47.58 How does it prove Paulie was a rat, lol? Tony Sirico said he refused to play a rat in the first place. Paulie is definitely not a rat. Also why does there even need to be a rat? If anything it would be Phil Leotardo's wife if Tony even died at all.
I really wish that in the final scene with junior, he briefly managed to recognise Tony before losing it again. And in that brief moment, he used it to remind Tony that he never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Meadow is Tony's guardian angel. Throughout the series she often "saves" her father and she might be the only one he unconditionally loves. Showing Meadow's bad parking attempt is emphasizing the fact that Tony this time is really on his own, without his guardian angel. If Meadow had entered the dinner in time, she would be sitting on his right side, between the bathroom and thus would be in the direct line of fire, which might have hindered the hit. But so she comes in "too late" to save him.
I just finished it too. That rape storyline seemed to go no where. Maybe it was there to show the polar contrast with how she dealt with her own shit compared to Tony. She sucked it up and got on with her life. The actual rape scene was horrific to watch but outside of that, her response to it almost seemed too stoic.
@@chrisbirch4150 that storyline was about Melfi's relationship with Tony, and that episode draws a clear line in the sand between them, it was never about seeing that dude behind bars or having Tony smash his face in.
You guys forgot the two (now very disturbing) things Christopher says. 1.He warns him of his 3 o clock. (His right side, from where the Members Only guy is gonna come out of the bathroom and kill him) 2. Christopher once said in hell you relive your death over and over again. If you notice, as Tony enters the diner, he is looking at himself there. Suggesting he is doing precisely that: reliving his death. Fantastic show full of symbolism and foreshadowing for those who pay attention. Genius writing.
YOOOOOO that is awesome! Great find. My first impression was that guy killed him just because of how many times he is shown, the way he moves, and the general vibe he gives off. This is even better!
Very cool details. I don't understand why nobody try to know what got Tony killed and for me its Elliot Kupferberg rating him in the psychiatrist's dinner. After all, psychiatrist TOO have the law of silence and are "members only" :)
@@karlheinz2674 The show is literally packed of people dying from small sentences from non-mobsters. The scene is the most important of the last episode. The Soprano is the story of a mobster going to a psychiatrist. Obviously his dead IS related to the scene.
#2 is very astute! I never understood the symbolism of Tony seeing himself. It is said that if you die unexpectedly, your soul doesn't know that you are dead and you linger at the place you died so that makes a lot of sense!
I love how they showed the 2 black guys, since it was a running joke throughout the series when someone important died or got hurt it was always “2 black guys” that did it.
That makes me think he died. He was shot and whose fault was it? The 2 black guys! Even if it was the bathroom guy. Oh, and the 2 black guys and the bathroom are 3, the magic numer of the episods
Ranny Trom What’s crazy is if you look at the credits in the end. The black guys are listed as “African American Man #1” and “African American Man #2”, but EVERY OTHER actor there is just labeled as “Man” or “Woman”, no mention of them being White/their race. That’s pretty fucked.
J G after Johnny Sac went to prison, he had to sell off all his stuff (you’ll remember Christopher bought his Maserati), and as a wedding present, Tony got the house (cheap lol) for his sister Janice & Bobby Bacala as a wedding present.
One clue I never see mentioned is in the very final shot just before the diner scene as Tony rises from his chair to leave Junior for the final time. Junior's dead in all but body, wasting away in an old folks' home, and there's an announcement board on th wall in the corner framed between them. As Tony walks toward the slowly panning-out camera the information revealed upon the board is TODAY IS MONDAY WEATHER COLD SUNNY NEXT MEAL and Tony's head obscures the answer, SUPPER, until just a few frames before the cut. The Last Supper. And then just a few short disorienting edits later we see Tony enter the diner, seemingly seeing himself framed in a shot reminiscent of The Last Supper. In an episode where every frame, almost every pixel has been considered, I don't think that was an accident.
I think you are correct. these shows are all planned out months or more in advance, and they most certainly think about these things during plot planning and setting up shots.... everything is considered, and its what I would do if I was director, it would be part of the fun of the job.
They deliberately put in that flashback of tony and Bobby on the boat saying “you won’t even hear it, probably just go black”. They literally SAID IT. ***TWICE***
1 throw away line shouldn’t hold that Much value, when paulie gets poison ivy and he goes to the ghost guy who laughs at him what was that? More to life and the show I think I hope
Correct interpretation of the ending: Your cable actually did go out. Tony got tired of you watching him and ordered Paulie out to your neighborhood to cut the cords.
Because obscenity is perverse and gratuitous. Whereas in the whole vast dome of living nature there reigns an open violence. A kind of prescriptive fury which arms all the creatures to their common doom: as soon as you leave the inanimate kingdom you find the decree of violent death inscribed on the very frontiers of life. You feel it already in the vegetable kingdom: from the great catalpa to the humblest herb, how many plants die and how many are killed; but, from the moment you enter the animal kingdom, this law is suddenly in the most dreadful evidence. A Power, a violence, at once hidden and palpable. . . has in each species appointed a certain number of animals to devour the others. . . And who [in this general carnage] exterminates him who will exterminate all others? Himself. It is man who is charged with the slaughter of man. . . The whole earth, perpetually steeped in blood, is nothing but a vast altar upon which all that is living must be sacrificed without end, without measure, without pause, until the consummation of things, until evil is extinct, until the death of death.
Let me clear this up: The violence isn’t real; fake death and fake blood; it’s all simulated whether it appears shocking or not. Profanity is not simulated or fake, it’s real. It’s the same thing with nudity. Young kids may watch the guy hang himself in the clip; they’re not going to wanna hang themselves because of it. But if they hear an f word, they may want to repeat it.
What really made me sad is realizing that Junior outlived so many people and probably doesn’t even remember them….being all alone and probably doesn’t realize it.
Dementia is one of the worst ways to go for sure, and one of the worst ways to see someone else leave the world... especially a family member. It's so depressing and sad.
@@austinmartens8662 They kind of deserved it. Lived the high life knowing where the money was coming from the whole time and in the end they got to see it first hand.
It was revealed years ago there was gonna be a scene that was cut where Tony and Chris walk into a Chinese place and see him working as a maintenance worker and got scared it revealed he is slow and doesnt remember anything which makes chris sad and feels guilty where Tony is relieved that he will never tell the Russians what happened
I wouldn't say he was "right" per say, I mean it doesn't take a genius to know that in a business where almost every important man gets murdered jailed or disappears to expect something bad to happen would be rather obvious
When watching this ep, i knew in my guts Tony was gonna die because of his last convo with Paulie. Paulie venting the fact that all of the crew is gone, and exactly when Tony walks away, it’s only Paulie left outside the meat shop, all alone. Damn!
He didn’t actually die on screen, so it’s literally up to the viewers. Even if the writer or producer says he dies, he didn’t, and this, it’s up to the viewers. As a result, I say he didn’t die.
It was a happy ending for Tony. The happier that It could be for someone like him. Happier than he deserved even, surrounded by his family, not knowing It ever happened. It didn't even hurt, It went straight to the dome with no pre-death anxiety at all. It takes me back to when he was dinning with his family at Artie's restaurant after a heavy rain a few seasons before. Very alegorical.
When I watched the ending, I had a strong feeling that it was Tony's demise portrayed in a brilliantly cinematic manner. The the sudden black screen, and the ensuing silence left us with nothing, much like when someone gets shot in the head. There are several subtle hints that point towards this being the true ending: the shot of Paulie alone with the cat, almost as a premonition; the way they shared the onion ring, akin to a symbolic last supper; the mysterious man entering the restaurant, clearly meant to signify something important, as evidenced by his constant glances at Tony; and Anthony's poignant words about cherishing the good moments, almost as a farewell. As a screenwriter myself with years of study, I understand that scenes like this aren't crafted without a purpose. 'The Sopranos' has always been known for its raw and unapologetic realism. If the creators are dropping all these subtle clues, it's because they want us to grasp the true meaning. If it were meant to be a happy ending, we'd see the family happily dining together. But the fact that it ends this way, with Tony's death portrayed in a brilliant, unique, way makes it clear that we are witnessing his demise, just as he does, without the warning of a gunshot, as Silvio once advised.
I wish they had included a "white noise" effect, similar to Sil's experience. Even if it was for just a fraction of a second. An extra clue that there was a gunshot and not, as many people think on their first watch, a technical glitch!
I have another theory. What if everyone is looking at this the wrong way. What if Tony was never the target but instead it was AJ and it was his blockbuster manager who wanted payback for stealing the promotional items.
He absolutely died. My favourite piece of imagery is earlier in the finale he's out in the backyard and it shows from his point of view looking into the winter trees. It's the exact thing Adrianna was looking out the window at when she realised she was going to die. Think it happened more than once too
@@adonisparts1343 don’t know about Band of Brothers but Chernobyl is def a good series however can’t be called great bc it’s a mini series which limits itself to aspects like character arcs, developments and depth
When Tony first walks into the diner and it jumps to show him sitting in the booth, it also hints at Meadow's direct line of sight as she walks in that door to witness Tony's murder.
I think he got busted.. here's why. In one of his final business deals is talking about a big contact to replace windows on buildings all.over jersey.... in real life it was a window replacement scam that dealt the mafia their biggest blow ever.. ever. The feds got wind of the scam.. flipped 4 guys to wear wires and got warrants for bugs.. in the end almost FIFTY made guys went down.. from 3 different families. Even all 4 capos of one family got busted.. in the end nearly 15 of the guys turned evidence on other crimes.. dozens of people went away for murders and the mob was almost destroyed... all of this over a scam to replace windows.
@@joshythehand2960 nah dude. He, without a doubt, got shot in the back of the head. That’s why the screen cut to black the way it did. The shooter was the guy who walked in right before his son came through the door, sat down at the bar for a second and went to the bathroom right before his daughter walked in. He came back out of the bathroom and shot him right in the back of the head and murdered him right in front of his family. Tony even said In a previous episode that he thinks when you die, everything just goes black. That’s why they did it that way.
@@MrMan-fx3ow it was bobby who said it.. on the boat. And i get that.. but im telling ya.. in the finale episode tony and n.y. literally mention the window replacement scam. Only.time I heard a real incident mentioned on the show. Right after that tony talks to his lawyer and his lawyer tells him he thinks several folks had turned coat and ratted and tells tinynto expect fall out. Look up the actual window thing.. it almost destroyed the mafia. Only 8 guys were indicted for the actual scam.. but everyone.. high level guys.. started flipping about crimes going back 30 years. The don of both the Genevieve and luchese family.were indicted.. 8 top captains.. 50 made guys.. on all kinds of things. It was by FAR the most sweeping and high level busts in the history.of the American mob.. basicaly destroyed 2 entire families. And it's one of the last things talked about in the show
i can't believe no one's mentioned when Patsy said "it won't be cinematic", and the deaths of Sil and Bobby are extremely cinematic.. yet Tony's wasn't. given the POV shots in the diner i think it's fair to assume we saw the end of Tony's life through his own perspective
I think he was definitely shot and 'didn't hear it when it happens'. I think the point of the last episode is if he does survive he's got a grand jury to contend with (like Uncle Junior did who he visited the scene before) and the life as he knew it is over. "There are only two endings for a guy like me". That's why they put the stuff in about Carlo flipping and the grand jury. Either he dies or he goes to prison
I feel Tony was killed during his final stare at the door with the bell. He was shot by the man in the members only jacket from the bathroom. Tony didn’t see it. The camera views were all POV camera shots when tony looked at that door, so when the camera view went completely black, and silent, that’s what Tony saw.
What about all the hints about god or spiritual stuff so when Tony’s life just goes to black it’s sad, one guy can laugh at paulie cuz he had poison ivy but tony just goes to black
I don't think the cut to black at the end represents death... In Tony's coma near death experience we see the door to the other side is bright white, and gets whiter the closer to death he gets. I feel like its just us getting cut off from viewing his life. It's going to go on without us. Still you can't say either way what happened. Good evidence he could've died too. Man what a great show and ending!
Something that people leave out when talking about Eugene, is that it wasn’t just Tony who wasn’t letting him retire. The feds also had control of him and had just informed him that they were going to make him a star witness.
Think about it... If Chase ended the show with Tony being shot by members only or if they just pulled out with the family eating dinner..or even if the FBI came in to arrest him... would anyone still be talking about it all these years later? Best TV show ending ever.
I think that’s the entire point of the scene with him and jun before the last scene. Life is all about memory and interpretation. Writers nailed it by leaving the possibility for all these interpretations
Just finished the show not 20 minutes ago. This explanation video was amazing and all the comments here are incredible eye-opening but what hits the most is knowing that we all know the truth and became so attached to not just a character but an entire series that it is hard for us to fully admit it out loud because then its truly over
I think Meadow's parking is a symbol on the fact that Tony would be shot. She made the parking on her 3rd attempt, and Tony had 2 murder attempts on him.
What’s crazy is he’s wearing the same shirt Junior shot him in, Bobby Baccala said you won’t even know when it hits you, and Patsy Parisi said it won’t be cinematic, which all points to Tony being murdered. I always imagined an alternate ending in which before it cuts to black it’s Meadow’s reaction, a face of shock/horror and the click of the safety being removed, or Tony looking up and the same click being heard right before the scene ends. All would have been great endings, but the ambiguity lets you imagine the ending you want for yourself.
I always thought that her inacurate parking saved her life because she would be sitting next to Tony in the diner and would be in the line of the bullet....
I just did my first full rewatch since the show originally aired. What an incredible experience the second time around. The ending was perfection. No TV series will ever match this one.
What Tony is feeling throughout the episode is thus ever growing feeling that it's over. That somethings's coming. He's not anxious anymore. He's just waiting.
Paulie was indeed going to be whacked, but Tony is not fully a monster, which is why we kept tuning in for 6 seasons. The guy was complex and multi dimensional.
it was more intense knowing the ending and watching it. I knew it was gonna happen but not when during that whole scene. I just felt so bad for his family. Broke my heart cus it seemed like they were getting along for once
In an interview with Steve Perry he said originally the whole family was going to be wiped out. But Steve refused to let David Chase use the song Don't Stop Believin' if that was the ending.
Perry didn’t sign off on the song being used until *the* *day* *the* *episode* *aired* , when David Chase personally guaranteed Perry the song would not be playing while Tony is being killed or his dead body on camera.
Theres a scene in the club early on in the episode and the song playing is The Doors...lyrics are...When the music's over turn out the lights, turn out the lights, turn out the lights
@@justk4913-q3e Oh shiiiiiiiittttttt. You're a genius. Thats the final nail in the coffin right there. He totally died. So many clues. This is huge can't believe the video missed this one!
I think the last scene with Junior mirrors what Aj told him. Tony reminds Junior that "they ran New Jersey" which made Junior smile even though he didn't really remember. Aj does the same thing when he says " remember the good times" which Tony doesn't remember but get some happiness from it.
I believe that interaction with Corrado Jr. actually played more of a part. Rather than the scene just showing us aging is inevitable, I believe the scene showed Tony none of it matters. If we remember back to season one, think of the episode with the soccer coach that was seeing one of the girl players. Tony's therapist asks Tony, whey he believes he is the one that has to do something about it. All throughout the series we see all these characters get so bent out of shape over respect. In Corrado's case he forgot he was ever in a position of power, and when told he was, he barely cared. Yes his mind was deteriorating, but I believe his response showed Tony.... Who cares. It's the answer to his panic attacks and all the years of therapy he could never fully justify. There's even a therapy scene where we actually see Tony start to cry because he can't cope there will never be a definitive point in time where he graduates therapy. He asks something like this - "after all this (referring to the years in therapy) what's left?" The short answer is It's all just a journey (hence the song). I do believe he died in the end, but I do believe he was truly happy for once in the series.
This is the beauty of Sopranos and what so many other series are missing. You don't just put on screen everything that happens, you let some of it go to the viewer's imagination.
Such an important but highly significant detail. It should be more like reading a book, the blank bits are where you fill in all the important detail yourself
I think the show's creater actually refernced that in an interview once... there are a lot of things we dont witness or hear the end result of. The characters hear it second hand or they just never find out... I think he said he included this because it was a more accurate depiction of life in general - it is full of ambiguous situations, a lot of which, you never get any clear resolution of.
People who claim the ending is “open to interpretation” simply lack the courage to embrace the implications of the scene. He dies, and his world dies. He is gone, and that window onto his existence is closed. Forever. The whole point of doing it that way is that it denies the viewer the very thing that the viewer expects, which is catharsis drawn from a violent and morally poetic death. You participated in his life for all those years. You are culpable just like him, and just like him, you don’t get to see what happens next.
@@everybodywalktheDinosaur the show could be interpreted as Tony dying in the first episode and going through the stages of death. The end of the movie is almost ridiculous. He’s with his family and everyone is happy, there’s even Journey playing. Maybe this could be him getting to heaven? The one thing Tony was most afraid of was losing his family and at the end he’s with them.
It's brilliant. He was shot in the head from the angle of 3 oclock just like chrissy warned him in season 2. He didn't even hear it when it happened just like bobby said
Too many people think he lived which I disagree with he was just through a mob war with him being the final one left other than Paulie and him being the boss who can carry on the war would be stupid to let him live to avenge his family so killing him would give us closure to say his end was fitting for his life and how many people he wronged
@@protohass Even if he lived, he was pretty much done, even if he wasn't indicted, losing Silvio was a fatal blow, he's the only one that had any loyalty to Tony, New York would have just muscled in and taken over.
I think it would make sense that he died. If he lived it wouldn’t make sense to me. Why end it like that if he lives? But if he did die…. How would they do it artistically? Exactly how they did it.
The only people who think he lived can't be bothered to watch one of the thousands of analysis videos about the ending or they are plain stupid and in denial
For me it was a very sad ending. The show had its finale over 15 years ago (I was 27 then), and now it's only been 3 days since I finished watching it. So for me the show (especially the ending) was like an eternal farewell to James Gandolfini, Tony Sirico and Frank Vincent. I realized that they're all dead now when the screen went black
This is one of my favorite shows ever up there with Breaking Bad and Suoernatural. I saw it when it came out the first times and I’ve watched the entire show several times.
This episode gave me serious david lynch vibes. It reminded me of one of Tony's weird ass vivid dreams he had through out the series. The music in the episode is so loud like he's asleep but the song is playing and he's focused on it. The sopranos was incredible. Turning violence into art, instead of just splatter violence.
Where Tony got shot in the body would have left a hole in the shirt I don't think you would go out to a new restaurant with the hole in a shirt so I doubt it is the same shirt.
Tony Soprano IS dead already in this scene. When Tony walks in he is looking at the exact spot he will be sitting at when he is eventually killed. You can see the sadness and disappointment on his face that gives you the clue. Its the same disaapointment face he made throughout the series. A split second later It jumps to him sitting in the same spot without his leather jacket. At first he is in his own paradise happy with his family at a dinner table waiting to see his daughter but instead of seeing Meadow walk through the door he gets a bullet in his head and so his hell will continue. Tony's hell is a moment of a happiness that goes unfulfilled. Knowing he let his family down and that his family witnessed his murder without being able to see Meadow is his hell. As someone else mentioned the last words of the song " dont stop" is Meadow's screaming last words as the gunman is about to kill her father
The cat/tiger symbolizes Adriana. She was constantly wearing tiger print. In her last episode she was wearing a full body orange cat suit, and on the final drive with Sylvio she was wearing yet another tiger print outfit in. So yeah, feline symbolism everywhere with Ade. Even when they’re listening that “Meow” song by The Defilers, Ade is acting like a cat and singing along with the “meow” parts.
Interesting, but you are missing one extremely important point, during that final season, at the hospital when is recovering, he is having a talk with another patient during while they are watching Boxe on TV. During that discussion, Schrödinger is mentionned. So we could also see a reference to Schrödinger's cat theory, hence Tony is for us viewers both dead AND alive at the end...
Theres a few things that come to mind here. Tony is extremely distracted in the last episode, uncharacteristically letting his guard down many times. The second is the fact that it's Meadow who is late to the diner. First episode of the last season during the intro it's said Meadow is his guardian angel. She's not there for Members Only guy exiting the bathroom, plus Tony's attention focused on the ringing door entrance most likely, and not his killer approaching him
The last thing he saw was Meadow. He wanted that and that's why he kept glancing towards the door. She was his favorite person and meant the world to him. He glanced at her and he died. I'm almost happy for him.
Tony didn't die, the show itself died. It was a meta metaphor. Why people don't get this simple concept? Cut to black represents the ''film'' is ending. Thats why the last sentences we hear from the song is, ''Don't stop,''. The show itself says to itself, ''Don't stop,'' it also projects the audiance's desire for the show to continue. That's it about the end. Whether Tony dies or not is not EVEN IMPORTANT. It is not about Tony.
@@Dale_Blackburn Point is there is no one interpretation. I do think that Tony died, and it was the inevitable end for someone like him. He was a bad guy, I didn't have much remorse for him.
He didn't die. Every mob hit was always quick in and out. The guy who goes to the bathroom would have just shot him dead the moment he walked in and then walked right back out. Hitmen never lingered around second guessing, or plotting because then they might lose their chance. Tony sitting in the booth was *the* perfect time to shoot him dead, going to the bathroom was a potential lost opportunity and makes zero sense.
People can believe what they want, that is the beauty of the ending. But in my opinion and what I believe after multiple rewatches over the past 14 years that all the clues are there. There are tons on subliminals throughout the entire series that was to conclude in Tony's death. Here are some basic ones I picked up on from memory: - 3 attempts on Tony's life - Chris tells him 3 o clock from his hospital bed - Bobby and Tony talk about death on a boat 'You probably never hear it when it happens, right?' This scene gets replayed near the end. - In the diner a Trucker has 3 caps of milk or cream next to his coffee cup - There are 3 cub scouts in the diner booth - Meadow fails to park, it takes her 3 attempts - You're '3 o clock' is your right hand side Now the last details are that each time the diner door bell rings Tony looks up then we get a point of view shot of Tony looking at the door. When AJ comes in Tony is focused on AJ and NOT the Members Only jacket guy. The members only jacket guy looks over at Tony twice while sitting at the bar, he then walks to the bathroom which is to Tony's '3 o clock/right side' and looks behind him while doing so. When the bell rings for the final time we see Tony look up BUT it cuts to black rather than us see a shot from Tony's point of view of Meadow walking in as the Members Only guy shot Tony in the head from his '3 o clock'.........'You probably never hear it when it happens......right? Bullets travel faster than the speed of sound.......Tony is shot dead in front of his family just like Phil was. The perfect opportunity, he is with his family, distracted and last of all 3....o......Clock.... Last of all some people say 'Oh too many witnesses, they wouldn't kill Tony in front of witnesses' Well Gerry from the New York crew got shot to death in a packed restaurant in front of Silvio. Phil was shot in front of his wife and grandkids.....It is a very plausible theory and with the death of James Gandolfini it is all confirmed in my mind that Tony Soprano after all the shit he got away with finally met the reaper. The only theory that make sense to me is this theory. Even if he didn't die he was going to be indicted , too many rats especially now Carlo had flipped because of his son getting pinched with ecstasy. His time was up. The Soprano Jersey crew was decimated. Technology etc he was done regardless.
The songs on the mini-jukebox Tony is checking out..."Turn, Turn, Turn, Magic Man (live)....I Am Lonely.... Rock It Billy" --- all 3 word titles. Then he plays "Don't Stop Believing." Coincidence??? Plus the title of this last episode is "Made In America."
you cant kill a capo for no good reason tony was a BOSS all the bosses would had to give the green light on tonys hit. what did he do to the mafia to have him killed infront of everyone and his own family? infront of the family is crazy he was a boss you'd have to be a rat to get done like that i dont think he died IMO
@@designerdrugs4evr valid point but he had done more than enough by that point. They whacked Phil in front of his two baby grandchildren. The whole crew was already decimated nobody left to earn or retaliate.
Still, Eugene could have entered the witness protection program and got to move somewhere nice. Tony was an asshole, was, past tense, because he is dead, and treated his people, Eugene included, horribly.
An even further plot twist; upon reading you're comment I agreed with you, but Eugene was also already cooperating with tht Feds, as the only out as a result of his own actions. One thing that we see consistently through this show is, whether sooner or later, Tony reaps what he sows, in all aspects of his life. Perhaps Eugene was a foreshadow of the inevitable consequence of your own actions. I sincerely appreciate your insight though.
gene was a fuckin moron. why the fuck would you even tell your boss about dreams like living in miami? or getting money from your past aunt? wtf dude lmfao. dude had over 2 million he coulda disappeared without leavin a trace. instead he gives tony a cut hoping tony will let him go. what a fuckin moron dude.
jim Well the old saying is and it has been in mob movies and it was in a documentary “ Once you decide to get in it . There is only one way out ! “. Eugene flipping double doomed him and he realized it in the end .
Great analysis Susannah. I liked the series and it was a satisfying, twisted, and scary ending. And I felt like after Tony’s death, he gotten a lesson out of it. His actions had a way of coming back to him
I'm EXTREMELY surprised you mentioned meadow's parking as merely a suspense builder, and totally missed the major hint hidden within. Meadows fails twice at her attempts at parking. Her third attempt succeeds. This was not just to build tension, this was a hint towards the fact that the previous 2 attempts at Tonys life had failed and the third would succeed. And i know it was touched upon, but it should be highlighted that a major hint was the fact that the most recent attempt on his life, when junior shot him, was in the episode titled "members only." Hence the members only jacket on the man in the diner.
I think that had Meadow parked at first attempt, she would've been sat at the table and therefore who knows if the killer would have pulled the trigger
When Tony says, "you and my Dad, you two ran north Jersey", look at his face when Jun responds, "We did...well that's nice". Tony realises it doesn't mean anything. But deep down I think he knows this already. So for me the final scene isn't about whether Tony lives or dies, it's about the anxiety of living knowing death could come for you at anytime. It doesn't matter what you do, how much power you have or try to control things, one day you die. And death is something that Tony is confronted with every day, it plunges him deeper and deeper into an existential crisis as the series progresses. Because fundamentally he understands the human condition. We create our own meaning but the only thing we can be sure of is that we die. Just like the episode. So how do we explain the ending? What does it mean? We can argue whether Tony lives or dies, gets arrested or walks out with his family etc, but the only thing we can be sure of is that the show dies abruptly, and we didn't see it coming.
Very well put. I also look at the moment where Junior says, "Well that's nice", as Tony having an instant revelation. Throughout the series he's always stated there are only two endgames for a guy like him: dead or in the can. But maybe there's a third? Ending up just like his uncle Junior. Tony very well could've lived on to run the NJ Mafia but one day he could end up just like his uncle did --- a sad, delusional, old man that is alone, and the worst part is, nobody cares.
Tony also doesn't remember that moment in the restaurant all those years ago, probably one of the most beautiful moments in the entire show. While this video makes a great point that it highlights his spiritual decline, i really think its also meant to be a subtle hint that the same mental decline Junior experienced is in Tony's cards as well. Either way, the point of the final scene truly should be "enjoy the times you have, because one day death comes for us." In a lot of ways, the members only jacket guy is death itself, stalking tony, always watching, always hovering.
I remember a lot of people saying this is a terrible ending to the show, but honestly, after watching this and going through the whole series recently, this is probably one of the better ending to a tv series I could think of.
Agreed! As much as I didn't like the ending, it was a perfect way to end the series. As much as I love this video's explanation, I can see the viewer's many interpretations. Sigh, I really miss this show and James Gandolfini!
I’m sure people now looking back on it and being able to watch it now on demand see it’s a good ending, but when it came out everyone had to wait 2 YEARS Between season 5-6 so the ending was built up for over 2 years and to not get the payoff after that was enraging to most understandably.
I wrote the same thing on another video. I remember when this aired everyone was upset and disappointed on how it ended. Going through it again it's actually a great ending.
Wow... I was pretty surprised the ending wasn't more dramatic, but this analysis really shows the incredibleness of David Chase, the subtle tensions and sudden cut to black with that final haunting face. Honestly amazing
I agree. I didn’t like how it faded to black. If Tony was killed then they should have shown him being killed instead of leaving it up to the audience to guess what happened.
If I was David Chase, I would have felt insurmountable pressure on how to end this show, due to the popularity and expectations. It’s completely reasonable that he decided to leave it up to the viewers to decide what happened. I think deep down we all know Tony was killed in the last scene, it’s fairly obvious, but some people loved his character so much they did not want to see him go, which is why the ending is a debate.
No. Just NO. It was not 'fairly obvious'. It was not obvious at ALL. The audience (those that follow the herd) NEED to create a plausible narrative bcz of their determined need to do so.
@@robyndismon394 Christopher warned tony about 3 o clock but not the time he was warning him about the direction his killer would come from without knowing it cuz the killer goes to the rr(presumably to grab a gun like in Tony’s fave movie the god father) and shot Tony from his direct 3 o clock
The cat is also a reference to Schrödinger’s cat. Even if there are a lot of clues, Chase decided to leave Tony’s fate ambiguous. Just like Schrödinger’s cat, Tony is simultaneously dead and alive. Also, remember Tony spoke to a physicist while he was in hospital and that guy mentioned several concepts of quantum physics.
This is interesting.... because the Jersey # on the restuarant wall is 38. There's your 3. Turn the #8 sideways and you have the infinity sign. Hmmm. Good observation.
Parallel universes, no sense of time or space, all things, multiple realities happening simultaneously. Tony banged Melfie in another parallel universe. AJ saved Tony in another parallel universe. Infinite possibilities over infinite parallel universes. That is what the physicist was describing, based on Quantum Theory.
@@lotsofthisandthat9791 May I ask you a question and if I'm getting/crossing a boundary, I apologize and no need to answer. BUT, my question is, do you believe in this theory? I personally do and I believe that Nikola Tesla was describing some of this in his quote regarding "The importance and significance in the #'s 3, 6, 9 and the cube"
Most people believe that Meadow's inability to parallel park was simply a distraction when, in fact, it saves her life. If she would have been successful parking on the first try she would have been sitting between her dad and the shooter exiting the restroom. That is my interpretation. And you say....?
Im probably super late on this, but does anyone see the word "Mori" in the neon reflection in the right window in the restaurant scene? "Mori" means "I died".
I think the song «dont stop beliving» relates to the fact that Tony thinks about the afterlife. He had a conversation about with Paulie earlier in the finale, and proclaims that he «gets it» after taking Peyote in Las Vegas. So the song and chorus kind of hammers in the point that Tony should not «stop beliving» in that concept. Fits with the episode to if you assume that orange cat is a reincarnation or Christopher.
It was a dreadful ending but was still a very good episode. The ending left no impression on me whatsoever. It was so bad that when I here people talk about it I do do not normally give an opinion.
It's simple: "Mikey gave me a message: tell Paulie and Tony... 3 o' clock". I've been waiting for that ending since the 9th episode from season 2. It's perfect. Couldn't be better.
The final scene broke my heart, because I saw things from Meadow's perspective. Imagine her walking into the diner only to see her father get shot in the head the moment they make eye contact. Just horrible...
I was worried this would be another reductive video about the finale saying how it can only be one thing, but you covered its ambiguous nature in a beautiful manner, well done
You do know there's only one thing that Happens? Tony is literally killed at the restaurant, the only question is who is behind the killing of Tony? New York or carlo/pasty or perhaps both as Carlo and pasty knew Tony location , while new York had the muscle needed to kill Tony
+nick SOULE Patsy did IMO, because his son wasn't at toys house and when tony asked about his absence, Pats has an uneasy look be a use his son most likely got busted in the ex Stacy ring that carlo 's son got knocked in. Patsy look made it seem that he was very uneasy when he saw toys reactions so he had to have tony clipped or else he might get got. this is al com juncture and speculation btw. I hope it helps
Another thing I noticed was that everyone in that restaurant looked like people that were very prevalent in the series, a woman looking like Janice. A man looking like Phil, members only jacket guy, as well as another great display of imagery you see Tony pick “Don’t stop believing” right underneath it is for the viewer, “Any way you want it” the audience decided Tony’s fate. After all these years the sopranos remains unmatched.
I noticed also the b-side of Journeys song "Don't Stop Believing" is "Any Way You Want It" which I sure was intentional. This clear sign to us that there is multiple ways to interpret the ending.
I've never commented on a series but wow, this was absolutely brilliant. There is so much to analyze after watching the final episode. I was so upset when it ended and went straight to UA-cam to find some discussion. I have chills after reading some of the comments. Very well done
If one looks carefully, one notices that it takes Meadow three times to finally park the car right. If one looks carefully, one also notices that Tony escaped death twice in the series (the attempt in season one and the time he was shot by Junior) but not the third.
i also feel like tony kept checking the door to see who’d whack him, but at the same time he was looking for meadow. the sense of relief he got when meadow walked in, all he could possibly think about is that his whole family was there and felt safe. but death walked in early, and it took him when he gazed at the light one last time.
I actually had to take a break and stop watching the show after that scene. Chris was always my favorite character, and the way Tony killed him made my skin crawl like no other show had ever made me feel. I was real life upset
@@ex_nazguul same and even more so with Adrianna’s death. Her imagining of going to Washington and packing her bags was even more awful than when Sil shot her. I just felt horribly bad for how she got mixed into all of this, and it wasn’t even that great to begin with! Chris treated her horribly but I guess in her position, what you know becomes more comforting even when it’s bad for you. But god, my guts hurt just thinking about the many times she supported him and showed him love like no other, and he was just a prick.
This ending is pretty damn brilliant. Initially I thought something was wrong with my TV until I realized it was Tony’s perspective that went black. The omen about 3 o’clock and the members only guy comes at him from a 3 o’clock position. I also think the members only jacket was a nod to the previous join the club episode where Tony had his NDE. All these 3’s. Meadow tried to park that car 3 times, which left the 3 of them sitting there and not her. Had she been sitting there on time, she might have been killed instead of, or in addition to. She was the last thing he saw, which was kind of merciful in a way if you think about your last vision on Earth being what you love the most. And he didn’t even hear it when it happened, like Bobby said. And when Sil was present at the table when the other guy was whacked, he didn’t hear it either. No sound. (Random) but for a Mob boss, Tony sure as hell had his back turned to people a lot over the years, sitting in restaurants etc. Maybe that was on purpose for the finale. The last evening of Tony’s life, he was looking at the sun setting in his backyard while he was sweeping, and it reminded me of “The beacon” of light. Also, there is emphasis put on Paulie being alone all throughout the whole show and in the end, he really was. Tony never warned Carmella about “if” something happened to him or “if” he’s gone. He always said “When”. P.s. the best thing about this video is the comments. All these different theories are pretty insightful. I think the writers achieved what they set out to, because the thoughts on this ending are so varied and they could ALL be true.
The songs that you see when Tony is filing thru the mini-jukebox, Turn, Turn, Turn.....I Am Lonely.....Magic Man (live), Rock It Billy.....and Don't Stop Believing --- all 3 word titles.

Excellent work!

It was prob one of the rival crime families. The specifics were never revealed. But the point is there's no reason to believe he wasn't killed when the screen went black.

Damn, this is literally exactly what I concluded from the finale, I just finished the finale today
Brilliant 👏👏👏
WOW great observeation good job
Good analysis. I knew Meadow’s parallel parking attempts were the wheels of fate turning, but I would’ve never compared her to a guardian angel.
When does Meadow save Tony?
I just finished the show and still cannot accept that Dr. Melfi didn’t tell Tony about that guy who raped her
Yeah me too, I was hoping he would get the Guy.
Same, I was so sad that nothing was ever done about it. I wish they finished the storyline
@@chrisbirch4150 that storyline was about Melfi's relationship with Tony, and that episode draws a clear line in the sand between them, it was never about seeing that dude behind bars or having Tony smash his face in.

1.He warns him of his 3 o clock. (His right side, from where the Members Only guy is gonna come out of the bathroom and kill him)

One clue I never see mentioned is in the very final shot just before the diner scene as Tony rises from his chair to leave Junior for the final time. Junior's dead in all but body, wasting away in an old folks' home, and there's an announcement board on th wall in the corner framed between them.
As Tony walks toward the slowly panning-out camera the information revealed upon the board is
TODAY IS
MONDAY
WEATHER COLD SUNNY
NEXT MEAL
and Tony's head obscures the answer, SUPPER, until just a few frames before the cut.

America in a nutshell.
I know, it's so fucking stupid.
Let me clear this up:
The violence isn’t real; fake death and fake blood; it’s all simulated whether it appears shocking or not. Profanity is not simulated or fake, it’s real. It’s the same thing with nudity. Young kids may watch the guy hang himself in the clip; they’re not going to wanna hang themselves because of it. But if they hear an f word, they may want to repeat it.
Just finished the show today, didn't realize the last episode had this much going. Imagine what else we missed on other episodes, truly a testament.

I don’t believe that Tony got killed at all!

But then again who killed him?
Ironically proving Tony was right to keep him around, even though on the face of it it was unnecessarily selfish
Think about it...
If Chase ended the show with Tony being shot by members only or if they just pulled out with the family eating dinner..or even if the FBI came in to arrest him...
would anyone still be talking about it all these years later?
Best TV show ending ever.
John Rigs you fucking right about that dog. Best TV show ending ever.

I liked what you wrote but he was about to go to prison. I don't think he was happy, but back to a more normal state of his usual life.
This is the beauty of Sopranos and what so many other series are missing. You don't just put on screen everything that happens, you let some of it go to the viewer's imagination.
Such an important but highly significant detail. It should be more like reading a book, the blank bits are where you fill in all the important detail yourself
@@andreeniem8780 YES. This show is akin to reading a novel.

Interesting, but you are missing one extremely important point, during that final season, at the hospital when is recovering, he is having a talk with another patient during while they are watching Boxe on TV.
During that discussion, Schrödinger is mentionned.
So we could also see a reference to Schrödinger's cat theory, hence Tony is for us viewers both dead AND alive at the end...
thats a very interesting observation. thanks for sharing it.
So... Everything is everything. Thanks.
This is a really good take especially when you consider we see Tony looking at himself sitting in the diner seat.
Thus the orange cat !
@@Dale_Blackburn
Point is there is no one interpretation. I do think that Tony died, and it was the inevitable end for someone like him. He was a bad guy, I didn't have much remorse for him.
@@Dale_Blackburn I kind of agree. Death would probably be irrefutable if the black happened from Tony's pov, but it is from our pov.
@@Philthoyou just can't wrap your head around that he is dead lol
People can believe what they want, that is the beauty of the ending. But in my opinion and what I believe after multiple rewatches over the past 14 years that all the clues are there. There are tons on subliminals throughout the entire series that was to conclude in Tony's death. Here are some basic ones I picked up on from memory:
- 3 attempts on Tony's life
- Chris tells him 3 o clock from his hospital bed
- Bobby and Tony talk about death on a boat 'You probably never hear it when it happens, right?' This scene gets replayed near the end.
- In the diner a Trucker has 3 caps of milk or cream next to his coffee cup
- There are 3 cub scouts in the diner booth
- Meadow fails to park, it takes her 3 attempts
- You're '3 o clock' is your right hand side
Now the last details are that each time the diner door bell rings Tony looks up then we get a point of view shot of Tony looking at the door.

Very good. The sacred and the propane.
Mind blown!!!
I think that had Meadow parked at first attempt, she would've been sat at the table and therefore who knows if the killer would have pulled the trigger
@@Sebpz8342 THIS is what I think's the real significance of it, no offense to the original comment. Too much of a stretch for me

Sigmund Freud over here...

1. He was killed.
2. As a mob boss he'll always be paranoid about his surroundings.
The story of Tony Soprano is a tragedy, and tragedies don’t have happy endings.
14:32. Note the other song title underneath "Don't Stop Believing." When it comes to interpreting the finale, it's "Anyway you want it."
@@mamabear-9.18.18 it's possible. Could be a simulation too ? Do you watch Mudfossil University? So many questions.
From now on it’s Schrödinger’s Tony
Most people believe that Meadow's inability to parallel park was simply a distraction when, in fact, it saves her life. If she would have been successful parking on the first try she would have been sitting between her dad and the shooter exiting the restroom. That is my interpretation. And you say....?
Totally agree, i belive she's the only soprano who lived that night.
Good analysis.
The ripper they wouldn’t kill his wife and son the, families don’t get touched
@@Cwztian There's a theory that says the 3 shots of milk are the 3 deaths of that night, and there's 3 soprano's sitting there.
true and also the last thing Tony sees is his daughter ... ie 'Don't Stop Believin'
Im probably super late on this, but does anyone see the word "Mori" in the neon reflection in the right window in the restaurant scene? "Mori" means "I died".
This is also a really good catch. 👏
Plot Twist: Tony actually had the makings of a Varsity athlete
and tackled the gunman down before he shot him.
The fact that we're still talking about this ending ten years later is proof that it IS an amazing finale
Da Vo, you're the fool if you think you got trolled.
No, it doesn't.
i expected the top comments to be like at least 3 years old ... RIP JG and the best show ever
It was a dreadful ending but was still a very good episode.
The ending left no impression on me whatsoever. It was so bad that when I here people talk about it I do do not normally give an opinion.
No it's not.
It's just proof that alot of us care about what is considered one of the best shows of all time.
RIP James 💔
You're still an Icon
They also did an AMAZING job at picking out each song for each episode's situations.
It's simple: "Mikey gave me a message: tell Paulie and Tony... 3 o' clock". I've been waiting for that ending since the 9th episode from season 2. It's perfect. Couldn't be better.
yea. The direction in which he was killed
@@paulocarreirapinto dude good one
Dweeb
@@danmallia1808 You forgot to write "here". No prob, we got you.
the cat is Adriana
Oh shit I never thought of that.
I agree especially given the fact that Adriana was on all fours crawling away when she was shot.
Rich Weigel WOW. You all have such a wild imagination.
Adriana, the dark one.
I always thought she was on all 4s because she was the doe , la cerva means deer after all , but if the cat was Adriana that’s sad af lol
Looking back at it, this was one of the best and unsettling final scenes to ever exist
bro my heart was RACCINGGG
No Everybody hate Chris is one of the scene never finish
I finally got to finish the series and holy shit I couldn’t even comprehend that was the last episode
WHATdaFUNK123 it was very ambiguous
The final scene broke my heart, because I saw things from Meadow's perspective. Imagine her walking into the diner only to see her father get shot in the head the moment they make eye contact. Just horrible...
I was worried this would be another reductive video about the finale saying how it can only be one thing, but you covered its ambiguous nature in a beautiful manner, well done
Franocho69 lmao so many websites talked about this, other videos also talked about this nothing new
You do know there's only one thing that Happens?
After all these years the sopranos remains unmatched.
and the group of cub scouts could've represented AJ. growing up in north jersey every kid at that age was in cub scouts
It was the bartender from the strip club, because Tony was always beating on him.
He'd be justified, poor Bastard always caught a bad deal.
He quit a long time ago i dont think he hold a grudge, the guy is craven
I thought he was Security ?
I'm still upset about Chris's death
@@noble_experiment yes! Adriana’s murder broke me! Saddest death in tv history in my humble opinion 😢😢
I'm not, got tired of him
I didnt take any brake, i think the show is great
This ending is pretty damn brilliant.
