Why do you feel that it’s essential to remove all the moss from the new roots? I must be missing something, because to my way of thinking that’s just a way to traumatize new roots.
Moss holds onto water at a much higher rate than soil. If your soil feels dry, your roots, surrounded in moss, might still be soaked. This leads to a lot of people unintentionally keeping their roots constantly wet and leading to them dying off.
@@KillThisPlant Ah! That makes sense! I live in a dry climate, and will never be accused of overwatering my plants, so this wouldn’t be an issue I’d need to worry about.

question: i have a monstera that is growing down and the horizontally (like in an L shape) and is attached to the side of a mezzanine. it only has small leaves so... should i do this and stake it up?
If you want to, sure.
Plus your friend under-waters his Monstera that's why the leaves all look so bad, very dull in addition to the ends dying.
If the shape of the cut stem is so that it has to get into the soil, do you suggest letting the cut callus for a few days before planting to avoid rot/bacteria? Any other tips?
Using a antifungal like copper or sulfur on the ends of the stem works. But if the plant is healthy and has lots of light you don't really need to worry about that.

You can cut it back as much as you need to to fit it into the space. It will grow back once it's exposed to wet moss.

I am terrified to prop my monstera. It is nearly 9ft and I want to take the top off of it so that the lower leaves can mature. I had a week where every leaf developed 3-4 fenestrations. I’m afraid they will be stunted if there is less plant but I would like the bottom to bulk up a bit. Should I cut it?.
If you cut the top off your plant that wont cause the lower leaves to bulk up. It'll cause the leaf to revert to a smaller size and then it'll catch up to larger leaves again as it grows.

Yes. But not directly in front of the AC unit or vent.
Out of curiosity, why did you leave that chuck of stem outside the pot? Why not just cut it off? 🤔

I’ve planted my monstera in a mixture of scoria and potting mix, I can’t seem to find anyone doing the same. Is this advisable? I initially had an issue with drainage believe it or not and I began to get root rot, I’ve just reported it in a pot with better drainage.
Potting medium is much less important than light exposure. It's not that scoria is bad/good.

I propogated my monstera deliciosa from a cutting too.. and all the credit goes to you. Your videos are very helpful.
I am from India and i planted my cutting on November 3rd. Initially i potted my cutting in water and when roots developed within 20-25 days I repotted it in soil. I used cocopeat and terracotta chips as a soil medium.. 2 days before i noticed tip of new leaf coming out.. i am very excited to welcome new leaf too..

i proporgated mine in some perlite and mist often like once a fortnight and et voila loads little plantlets oh and instead of water i added hydroponics mild solution to water with teeny bit of H202 and in a terranium which is an old plastic fish tank i had and a proporgating lid it works a treat

Good technique to get the aerial roots into the pot.
I keep hearing and seeing about tree fern fiber. I need to look it up and try it for myself! I love trying new things. I personally have never and layered. I feel intimidated by it😅

Thank you! I have a long straight adinsonii cutting that I'm trying to get more roots on before growing upwards. I'm a hydroponics fan and generally find moss too frustrating to remove, but it could be worth it here because you're making it look a lot easier than my current attempt at hovering it perfectly above the water level! At least the roots are easier to tell from the moss since they're chunky... As always, great content Lee. 😊

Tried this on my huge 5ft plant today, crossed my fingers and hope for the roots to develop in a few weeks !
Is it necessary to use a clear ziplock bag ? Mine are slightly translucent, kinda grey instead of clear.
Also I wrapped the moss around the bottom half of the aerial roots and haven’t wrapped any moss on top of the stems - is that the right way to go ?

I have two stems in my pot. From two different mother plants. The taller stem is from Cal's plant.
I repotted my monstera after I got it, and ended up potting the aerial roots. (I was an uneducated new plant parent)
A good while later and it still hasn’t grown any aerial roots and it’s growing horribly slow and is looking awfully sad.

Slow growth is a light issue but I would have to see the plant and its environment to be sure.
I know it’s in a different genus, but would a large epiprumnum pinnatum work in a similar fashion? Any tips would be greatly appreciated ❤

My dads monstera needs to be propagated as it looks similar to the one in your video. However, he cut off all the aerial roots the day before i wanted to help him. Can i still water or moss propagate the plant without aerial roots? Thanks
@@Nicolas-rk8vg the aerial roots will grow back if you air layer the plant. It will be more challenging to root in water with no aerial roots but, again, they'll grow back.

If it was slightly smaller and if it was ready to move up this sounds like it's more likely a light problem.
This is my next experiment. I have a couple monsteras with roots shooting out of their pots. They are shooting upwards

It depends, it could, all plants need to have time to adjust to new intense lighting.
Why would you use a Monstera plant with ugly brown tipped leaves as your example plant, without sharing what to do to prevent them? I would not have that planet with those ugly leaves in my home. Those leaves and their stems would be gone!

I have no direct experience with air layering, but I have seen bonsai dudes use cling film and moss to air layer ficus. Feels like it would be easier to handle than freezer bags.
Probably, but also Monstera roots get so thick so fast I was worried about having to re-wrap it to create more space.
