Thanks! I've just bought it. Could you please answer, when you did that Misery sample for trigger did you bypassed plugins on your master channel? Because I wish that sample sound from your mix is witouth master mix bus processing couse I will use my gears on mix bus.
@@KUMStudio1 hey in the video it was still running through the mix bus but it won’t make a big difference as those mix bus settings aren’t changing the tone in any dramatic way. the actual sample doesn’t have the mix bus settings applied as it would actually make it harder to use in a mix - so you can still process it a little bit extra if needed - add some extra compression or tape etc but it sounds great to me even without adding more processing.
@@KUMStudio1 sorry must have misread, yep no mix bus processing on the actual sample. I originally made it that way and when I tested it, it was over processed when I tried to put it back into a mix. This way gives the user room to apply some processing without it sounding too much! Hope you enjoy using it!
Just to add, if anyones interested, Bendeth said that the reverb he used in Riot is the m Yamaha SPX 90 Hall ~1s preset with some upper mids and highs added
half agree for sure. think they were the most commercial successful one. it sounds like they just wanted that "emo" sound and lucked out. as if they were like " i want the drums to sound like aaron is playing them". ahaha
@@christopher-miles”hey Zack, we want you to hit that snare as if it owes you money”. Ah yes Commercial Success is the right term. I always had this belief because after that, I can hear the misery business snare everywhere - even in metalcore at that time 😂
Great video man! The recorded snare is treated well and blends with the sample just right. The one thing I would slightly change is the bottom snare treatment. You're starting off with the right mindset of letting the track be more natural and less processed, which is exactly the purpose of a great gnarly bottom snare track. The bottom snare mic itself sounds fucking awesome (maybe better than the top mic). It captures the sizzle and mid-range trashiness that a tightly-tuned 1-ply head and snare wires project. The issue is in the kick bleed. There's too much and it is out of phase with the kick drum (or whatever sample/blend that you've come up with). When you showed how the snare sounds sterile without the recorded tracks, you can hear the kick's fundamental sounding full. But when you bring in the recorded tracks to enhance the snare's natural sound, the kick drum's balls get cut in half. The only way I've found to solve this problem is to: A; Manage the phase relationship during recording knowing how you will treat the kit during mixing, or: B; Use a plugin to minimize bleed i.e. high pass the bottom snare track (which changes the phase relationship)/hard gate the kick drum in the bottom snare track/side-chain a multi-band expander that is triggered by the kick drum. Either way, I wish I knew this shit 20 years ago. Keep educating my friend.
Hey man, this is a fantastic video. I came here after watching your 'mixing with separation and clarity' video, I've been recording and producing for maybe 7 years now but mixing is one area where I've always really struggled to get things right. Really appreciate you making these vids and being so clear on every plugin you use and the why behind it, excellent teaching 👍
nice moves sounds great - slate plugins are so good - I use logic also have a Raven just updated to the 4.0 software so good - I get a lot of good information from your video's on how you do things keep up the good work! your mixes sound awesome!
Had to comment before finishing the video. Awesome man! Gonna buy the sample for sure! But, I nees to add: Needs a little bit more distortion. Maybe if you did 20-25% on the Black Box would’ve been spot on. But, sounds so f-ing good! Gonna buy the sample for sure. 🙏🙏🙏
I've had countless instrument plugins that have had something close, just have to play with the most basic eq and compression to get the tone right. The rest is in your reverb bus. Luckily it's a pretty easy sound to achieve.
Hey Spinlight, do you have any videos of your gain staging? I noticed watching one of your videos the other day that most of your wave files around -18 or so but your submix and master were a perfect -1 . I always have issues with a peak here and there and can’t seem to figure out why I can’t stop it. I’ve been using pro tools for about 12 years and only for a couple years have I been using Limiters and such. Can you point me in the right direction?
I don’t really think too hard about gain staging - I just make sure nothing goes over zero and trim channels where necessary if things get too hot. I generally have a limiter on the master/mixbus when making videos to make things a little louder - that’s why it’s sitting at -1. Usually I try to keep my mix hitting around -6 to -3 on the mix bus. Planning on doing a video about this as a few people have been asking
Sounds great man. Quick off topic question, when using Trigger 2, looks like you just create a new AUDIO track, insert Trigger and copy the original track down to it. Is that typically your approach (as opposed to say, creating an AUX and sending the original to it)?
Not Rhys, but yeah thats how typically Trigger is used. I am not sure about using aux tracks because usually snares are compressed and clipped making its transient hard for trigger to pickup. Maybe if its a pre fx send it will work but I dont know how each Daw handles delay compensation. So i guess just to avoid all these possible complications, just duplicate the track and use it to trigger the samples 😂
Mate! Thanks for all you do, just bought the sample and it sounds thick! This is a bit of a farfetched request but trying my luck here. I have a sample that i’ve been trying to recreate for a long time but haven’t gotten close. I’m wondering if i send you the audio if you’re able to recreate it? Happy to pay for it of course :)
hi ! Amazing sound! but... to me it's not realy paramore snare sound, it's to much "direct mic", little bit thin and less roomy (the big part of the sound). Probably wrong compressor choice, distressor is a great snappy choice but he don't built a thick warm transient. And never forget the sound of the paramore riot snare is : Zac Farro. This guy is a "crazy smasher"
I think you needed that much eq on the close snare because you haven't sidechained the snare top to the overheads to cut a bit around 500-800Hz to get rid of the snare muddiness/cardboard sound while it hits. I find it the most annoying thing when I try to make the snare cut through the mix nicely, usually cymbals sound best when there are plenty of low mids and higher lows present but the snare gets lost and loses crispness if it's not controlled. I usually do dynamic eq band with the Pro-Q3 on the overheads and adjust the threshold until it holds the cut a bit longer after the snare hit. Cymbals sound more natural/bigger and snare sounds cleaner + there's less eq needed on the close snare and tom mics (I sidechain toms also to that band on overheads)

It's a great snare sound, don't get me wrong. But I always think it's weird how musicians and mixers obsession over one specific sound. I guarantee you there are hundreds of equally great snare sounds in songs we've never even heard of. It's just that this one has been given more weight by internet forums and UA-cam. I think people imagine it will solve all their problems if only they can figure out how emulate that one super-popular sound, whether it's this snare or Eric Clapton's "woman" tone or Justin Chancellor's bass tone. In the end, that isn't what's important. The St. Anger snare backing up a great song will do more for your career than the Paramore snare in a bad song. Not saying you're guilty of any of this. You made a cover of a song, and people asked you for a tutorial. And you very kindly gave it to us. It's just always been strange to me how focused the internet is on this snare. All that said, I enjoyed the video and I'll probably buy your sample pack though. Lol.
