i got the multitracks for this song, dont know how anyone could do it without the samples. ive never heard a drum sound with the samples so audible before, thats a huge part of the snare sound
From Bendeth himself: "Vinnie paul snare, crushed room mics, a circa 1974 transformerless ADR compex limiter, AMS reverb stereo, SPX 90 reverb mono, SSL 4000 E series console and a few home made samples added in for good measure. Heat to Boil then simmer, Stir lightly and serve." "I would say for the drums including ancillary tracks like mono drums etc about 18-22 tracks. I cannot count all the mics I want to guess about 14-16." "Slight room micing can also be mixed it for ambience, watch the phasing. I like the 414, u87 and u67 for alternatives"
Original recording has way more reverb on snare (sounds like a send) and a lot more compression, especially on snare. Thanks for tackling Paramore's drum sound. The record Brand New Eyes has one of my favorite drum sounds ever.
I‘d love to hear some of the drum sounds Placebo used, like on „Taste in Men“ „English Summer Rain“ or „Pure Morning“. There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on there.
indeed, there’s a ton of substantial creative work in their drum production almost at every step of their career - even from the most recent album - Surrounded By Spies has some interesting production choices in it. you can also add Space Monkey, In The Cold Light Of Morning, Devil In Details to the list from earlier years. Sleeping With Ghosts’ title track has one of the most memorable drums sound as well. it would be really awesome to see one of them broken down in future episodes.
It’s nice to hear the element you’re talking about in isolation and then blended in to the snare or whatever, but I always want to hear the it muted and unmuted a couple of times so we can hear what it’s adding to the final sound
It would be great if you could break down drums from Autolux song Turnstile Blues. It has a reverb soaked intro but then the drums get really punchy and clear. Also Carla Azar's playing is fantastic!
Carla’s an old and dear friend of mine. Seems like I asked her about the sound of that particular record, and here’s what I recall: Old Ludwig kit, 22/13/16/6.5x14 Supraphonic. Kit was close miked AND room-miked like the Bonham stuff. Probably 2 or 3 room mics, which sound like ribbons. Room was small- to mid-sized. I’d guess one of the microphones was possibly lower to the floor. The big intro was mainly the room mics thru a Distressor (or some sort of analog tube crunch), and the change in sound is shifted to the closer mics, and the crunch is sort of backed down. Carla is truly amazing. Superb musician. Always was. And a very sweet person.
@@thesoulboy7976 Thanks for the info! Other then the room mics into a Distressor, seems like a pretty regular kit and setup, it just goes to show what an amazing drummer Carla is to make it sound so unique and groovy. I could listen to that song's isolated drums track on loop for days!
Hahah I’ve been volunteering at an old church that feeds people in the community once a month. They found out my background is in audio and asked me to help sell some stuff - including an old SPX90 and an SPX900!
I don't get it, when you are putting this much effort into a sound and throwing it through tens of thousands of dollars of gear... Why would you just throw samples on top of it.
Great vid! @ 4:00 when it says "SM57 = $785 - $1090 on Reverb" I believe that's an error... unless it's the really limited edition 24k Gold Plated & Wired edition!
Love it. I think this type of drum sound did to drum recordist what Barbie dolls did to little girls growing up..I love it but I've never heard a drum set sound like that in a room
Love this video series. Btw I think there's a mistake with the value you listed for the SM57 in the video, unless they just abruptly went up in price and I'm not aware
Can you talk about the isolation between mics a bit? Really interested in how you got everything to sound so natural while still rejecting the other mics! Thanks for the video
I dont even listen to paramore, but i remeber hearing that a DDRUMvinnie paul,or pearl snakeskin vinnie paul, both 8x14 snares with die cast hoops and a very hard hitting drummer, then the studio wizardry comes into play.maybe a ludwig, but i doubt it.
It would be amazing to do one for Kings of Leon! Nathan has such a distinct snare sound on songs like Notion, Arizona, and of course their big hits Use Somebody and so on.
Mid 2000s pop punk drums to me were characterized by 13x7 snare drums, wide/ shallow toms, and 20x22 bass drums. Travis Barker was definitely the most influential at the time.
Look pretty standard 22 16 13 (x9) to me. Though from the angle at 1 minute the high tom looks the same size as the snare but i dont see how youd mount a 14 like that.
I feel like a snare bottom only sounds good if the wires are absolutely cranked, anyone have any thoughts on that? Please do a steve albini song next!!
Love these videos! but,,,, The key to a drum sound starts with the drummer, how they play, and their drum/cymbal choices. Please spend even 2 minutes having Jessica talk about how she emulated the original drummer.
This is the most "Ok boomer" comment that I've seen in a long time. To paraphrase your other insecurity-projecting comment, don't you have anything better to do in your life than spew baseless pessimism?
@@xdoctorblindx It's not baseless, the loudness wars a very real thing & it's based around trying to make your music as LOUD as possible to grab attention rather than just conveying whatever artistic merit it has. 5DB of dynamic range for modern music is fucking shit. It's a symptom of modern desperation. But string more baseless accusations & memes at me instead of a sound counter point, simpleton.
3:59 thats the most expensive SM57 out there, with a gold and titanium carbon infused capsule
Iron Man’s SM57.😂
I like how you explain this whole process and then at the end say "then we added some snare sample"... 😳
sm57 $785-$1090?!! these have gone up in value!!!!!

"Hit that... hit that snare!"
Jessica killing it on drums as always
One of the most iconic drum sound in the 00's. A lot of bands wants that paramore snare sound, even in the metal scene back in the day.
An episode on the 1975s drum sounds would be awesome!
Even Flow by Pearl Jam should be your next drum sound!
Holy shit, that’s an expensive 57! 😂
I recall Hardcore Music studio doing a poll and the Paramore snare sound on this record was voted number 1 best snare sound.
Original recording has way more reverb on snare (sounds like a send) and a lot more compression, especially on snare. Thanks for tackling Paramore's drum sound. The record Brand New Eyes has one of my favorite drum sounds ever.
David Bendeth is going to be very disappointed that you didn’t spot mic the cymbals.
I‘d love to hear some of the drum sounds Placebo used, like on „Taste in Men“ „English Summer Rain“ or „Pure Morning“. There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on there.
Pure Morning would be great for sure, but then Alesis Microlimiters will double in price again.

Stunning snare sound
Oh and RX Queen by Deftones definitely is an interesting one. Same with You Make Me Feel by Archive!
Awesome! Really love that you made the samples available
Sadly, the link for download is not working though lol Guess I'll wait

hell yeah!! love those aggressive alternative rock drums. wanna try some Billy Talent stuff?!
Sticky hands on the snare!!!!! I've been saying this!!!
i think this record had more than just a “little bit” of samples 😂
I was kind of hoping this video would just be them programming drums in a DAW😂
I don't get it, when you are putting this much effort into a sound and throwing it through tens of thousands of dollars of gear... Why would you just throw samples on top of it.
@@SlaserX yeaah just shame
Should have made Noam say “hit that snare” for the final mix section 😂

Also the ADR Compex F760 is based on the Helios F760 which is the When the Levee Breaks compressor
As always amazing ! Next time it could be the bloc party album´s silent alarm?
Can you talk about the isolation between mics a bit? Really interested in how you got everything to sound so natural while still rejecting the other mics! Thanks for the video
Do ONLY SHALLOW by MY BLOODY VALENTINE!!! The sound of that record bankrupted the label, so it's gotta be a tricky one to recreate!

The drum sound of Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush is very interesting. It's like gated reverb but soft somehow
Can you guys do the drum sound from Fantastic Planet by Failure?
How about a video on “London Calling” or “Train in Vain” by the Clash?
All the Small Things from Blink-182 would be great!
Great work. Maybe something from porcupine tree, from the fear of a blank planet album.
thank you people 🤘
Do The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds album next!
perfect samples thanks, could you recreate the sound of the doors morrison hotel???
Great stuff
Do PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me pleeeeaaaaseee
Please do Damaged Goods by Gang of Four. Us post-punk boys need to eat too.
Rolling Stones Love is Strong
It would be amazing to do one for Kings of Leon! Nathan has such a distinct snare sound on songs like Notion, Arizona, and of course their big hits Use Somebody and so on.
*Bookmarks for Paramore drum cover
Don't know 'bout everybody else, but I would definitely not pay $785 to $1090 for a 57 on Reverb or anywhere else for that matter. (;
@4:00 is killing me 😂
What a snare sound! Great work, fellas!
Do something from thr rolling stones Tattoo You!
shure sm57, could be yours today for just $785 on reverb.
has anyone ever gotten to download the samples from these videos?
ZAC. FARRO.

Lenny Kravitz drum sound!
Yeah, sex is cool and all but have you ever *recreated the In Utero drum sound?*
0/10 she didn’t hit the drums until they begged for her to stop. Classic Zac Farro technique completely squandered.
Didn’t quite make it
Some bee gees drums might be nice
Tame impala mind mischeif please :))
Can we get some Funky Drummer?
I feel like a snare bottom only sounds good if the wires are absolutely cranked, anyone have any thoughts on that?

mix it up what ever works

2000s sound: No dynamics, too much compression, one big ball of mush, chimp out on your crash cymbal. Great stuff.
