      So true. As a woman myself, who isn't like this as a teen, it completely fits the era and that time in her life, idk why it's such a big deal when adult male singers sing about all sorts of heinous crap
      I'm not someone to cry misogyny at every little thing, but idk, holding teenage Hayley to that standard while not acknowledging the other issues that the music industry has is very odd to me. Yeah, the lyrics are dated, but it's still this weirdly powerful song that's so easy to get out of your system when you're upset and need to vent, when that ONE person is just bugging you, yknow? 😂

    Paramore as a band seems to constantly release albums at major transition periods in my life and those albums are always what i needed to hear. Brand New Eyes came out when I started high school, and their self titled dropped right as I was moving. After laughter came out when I transferred to a bigger university. I always associated those albums with the comfort they brought me. Edit: new Paramore album announced right as I’m graduating Graduate school and planning my career. The trend continues lol

    Paramore seems quite happy with where they are these days. They all have their own things they do on the side and come together when the time feels right. I think having their own separate projects really helps the feeling of being overshadowed by Hayley, when that’s just inevitable when it comes to her presence in every way. Zac has his shining moment with halfnoise (great band btw) and while Taylor doesn’t really seem to want that, he does do his own producing stuff.

    I didn't know about Paramore's troubled history (I've only listened to their last two albums and somehow have never heard Misery Business until just now), so this video was eye-opening. With that being said, their self-titled and especially After Laughter are so, so good. I'm not gonna lie, having waited with bated breath for almost 4 years after Self-Titled's release, seeing the music video for Hard Times almost broke my heart. "How?? How could the pop-punk Midwest emo that defined my childhood stoop so low as new wave POP?? The GALL?!" And then Rose Colored Boy dropped. And then the album dropped and I listened to Grudges. And then 26. And then Tell me How. And then I actually broke down crying because the dissonance between the sonic makeup of the album and the lyrics just hit me like a ton of bricks. I now have two tattoos modeled on After Laughter, and it remains not only my favorite PMore album, but one of my favorite albums of all time (a close second is Self-Titled, just for the breadth it shows in composition and lyricism). Picking one favorite song is hard, so a favorite (or two) from each album: Brighter, Hallelujah, Turn it Off, Daydreaming/Last Hope, and Grudges/26.

    I was at a show in KC for the After Laughter tour in 2018. Before the show, a fan had printed and was passing out pink paper hearts that had instructions to hold up during 26 in front of our phone’s flashlights - it was an outdoor venue so it was *filled* with pink lights. Hayley paused briefly at the first line, they didn’t know it was planned. They went through the song, it was just incredible. One of my favorite moments at a show, ever.

    Brand New Eyes was always the standout for me. Felt like the best sounds of their first few albums condensed into a dozen or so tracks. Each song was rock solid and incredibly replayable. Their subsequent albums definitely explored more mature territory and took a few listens for me to appreciate and enjoy but BNE just hit immediately and powerfully. It's a great shame it didn't quite land on the charts in the way that it deserved.

    By far my favourite Paramore song is Rose Coloured Boy, which I'm surprised you didn't talk about!
    It's obviously beautifully produced, but the main thing for me is the sentiment, sometimes you just need to cry in contrast to the people around you.
    For myself a lot of my darkest times have been at the same time as a lot of good things happening, and so it really makes me feel justified in a certain way.

    I cant believe tha same thing happened to you with "26", that song hit so hard the first time i listened to.
    Years ago i always thought Paramore were just an industry plant trying to sell the whole emo-mall aesthetic (I was such a fool, ikr), but yeah, I really like them now and how they have evolved musically and lyrically.

    • @WinterReflections
      @WinterReflections 3 роки тому +3

      They definitely were in the realm of being "industry planted" lol. Hayley was literally recruited as a teen to become a performer and then the label also recruited the other band members. They saw her talent and charisma and wanted her to be a pop star but she said she wanted to be in a band. So they basically hired a couple guys to play instruments and only signed her to a deal because she was the one they were really interested in. She was the only one they ever actually wanted to sign because they knew she was the star, so in reality she definitely would have received the majority of all the money and attention to be had So when that former band member mentioned how Paramore was "manufactured", there was clearly truth to that. It doesn't mean they and especially Hayley aren't talented, and they got better with time. But yeah, saying early Paramore was "manufactured" is pretty literally true.
      She is obviously very talented and I like her music. But "industry plant" is an accurate description of Paramore.

    • @rose-coloredrabbit4559
      @rose-coloredrabbit4559 3 роки тому +1

      @@WinterReflections wellllllll, the label's one thing but i think Hayley's attitudes should count as well. She's always appreciative of her bandmates and delineate who they are in live shows. Also, Josh's frustration was also in part due to the public ( not saying Hayley's completely innocent but it is a mitigating factor). It might have been 'manufactured' in theory but the band changed that in practice. Also, not being 'manufactured' can also just mean honest and genuine which the band definitely is. Their songs are about tangible emotions and thoughts and they're always upfront about what they sing. Being great to fans is also why people love them so much, it is rare to have a band not just nice but attentive to fans as well.
      Obviously, we will never know the entire truth but i think that the little nuances shouldn't be overlooked when judging a band's authenticity.

Oh, and my teenage sister’s been addicted to “Still into You” for the last few months in between a myriad of K-Pop fluff. Also agree that it’s a banger, though I strangely picture Weird Al dancing in the video of “Eat It” during the verses. I’ll be sure to listen to Paramore’s whole catalogue back to back someday. I actually got into Paramore again this year for some reason. I had a similar response to 26 when listening to it at one of the darkest points in my life after something extremely traumatic. I still have to stop myself tearing up a bit! Weirdly though, I've found Riot to just not hit like it used to for me and I've barely revisited anything from that album. I just am not a fan of the production, I find all the vocal effects a bit tedious and I'm just not a fan of that sort of pop punk anymore. Brand New Eyes is still one of my favourite records of all times and hot take, it's kind of Paramore's equiv of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. First of all: YAS! FINALLY!
    Second: In 2017 a friend recommends me After Laughter and when I saw the aesthetic I couldn't believe he was serious. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS ALBUM! Especially because of how fun the music is and the dark undertone of the lyrics (Insert Fake Happy here) and because that's how I felt at the time. Showing myself as a happy person but with all these dark thoughts masked as jokes.
    Finally: In 2018, me trying to break with my really misogynistic past of "I don't like a band because a girl is singing" I gave RIOT! another shot (since I used to hate Paramore when I was in high school) and I regret every day of my life where I wasn't listening to this album. It gave me the catharsis of just scream and feel confident, confidence that I lacked the year before.
    Paramore has become one of my favorite bands of all time and I couldn't be happier to share my sheer fandom with people alike.
    EDIT: Can we address the fact Hayley is a true fucking fashion icon?

    I didn't fall in love with Paramore until I bought After Laughter in 2018 after a year of many of my friends telling me how great it was. I was a sophomore in college, architecture school, late nights, unfinished projects, bad grades, impossible time management... it was bad. After Laughter was one of the first albums I heard that made me feel safe opening myself up to my own failures and sadness (I won't say depression, because I came back around not too many months later, so I really think it was circumstantial not clinical). Hard Times, Rose Colored Boy, and Told You So all injected me with some kind of "screw everything and just go for it anyway" kind of energy, while Forgiveness, Fake Happy, and especially 26 made really pause to process everything I was enduring. The second half was incredible for me as well. Caught In The Middle was especially helpful, as one of the reasons I was failing in architecture studio was this kind of self-fulling fear that everyone else in studio thought I was lazy and could't handle the work and that I would drop the major before we all got to take a big trip to Rome. Some of that was true, but I don't think it was to the extent that my brain inflated it; some people actually really cared about me and wanted to see me do better. Anyway that chorus just helped me keep pushing till I saw them gain respect for me "I'm just a little bit caught in the middle, try to keep going but it's not that simple, think I'm a little bit caught in the middle, gotta keep going or they'll call me a quitter, yeah I'm caught in the middle." This isn't poetry folks, it's good songwriting. There's a difference.

    Also if TMBG somehow wins and you DON’T cover their children’s educational music phase in great detail you’ll have lost a fan in me >:(

    The comments in the Josh Farro situation about Christianity are not really out of left field. Hayley is also a Christian and has talked about some Christian messages in some of the songs. The difference is that in, I think specifically, "Careful", Hayley was being more open about her struggles with faith, "The truth never set me free / so I did it myself," instead of always acting like everything was perfect. Basically the Pinkerton of Paramore.
