James you are such an inspiration for all of us, students and professionals alike! ♥ I admire everything you do, and I am a follower of all your work! Love your books, your videos, your courses, your blog, etc. You are definitely one of my idols, and i always recommend your work to any who asks. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the video, I feel greatly honored. 🙏🏽
Thank you so much dear!! Your words mean so much for me. I'm glad it was helpful and you joined in the fun :P! I am working on videos which would have more things I've learned along the way , which I hope would be useful too! ♥
This is a very informative plein air video. Great work with the easel. I’m loving your procreate videos, especially the narrated ones. It’s nice to hear your explanations. Subscribed and notifications on. Eager to see more videos.
Well Hello! So happy to see you here! I see you got plenty useful videos! Thank you so much! I have also subscribed and I will have my weekend covered watching yours! :)
YES Jessica! Also check sizes, I am very comfy with it, but I understand some people might prefer a bigger/sturdier/heavier one. I even bought a couple more for my parents lol, they love how it folds into nothing and it's so so lightweight. :)
@@Kiyary Thanks for the pointers, and like your parents I like how it folds. With regular foldable chairs you usually have to deal with the size of the frame. This seems much better!
@@jessicaandersson4313 yes! I agree! it’s great to put inside the fishing backpack (dad), and my mom puts it inside her beach bag, the size is ideal (10”x1.5”x4” aprox folded)
Loved this video and just how tiny everything is! Brilliant. . I use a 10x12 pochade box for water based oils and panels, , but must make myself a small setup like this too for watercolors. Love your side shelves! Thanks for the video.
Hello Kathy! Thank you so much :) ! I do have a soft spot for tiny things. oh, actually 10x12 is great size! I do admit the wooden box part makes it a bit heavy for my taste. Prior to this one I made one using a sort of cigar box, but then I realised I didn't need the borders, but rather side shelves! Thank you so much for your kind comment :) I appreciate it tons!
This was such a great video thank you for sharing it. I'm slowly beginning to go outside and paint, then be in the studio mostly. So I'm always looking to learn from others and what they use. I can see where you might have got some ideas for your setup but you made a lot of really great innovations with it and took it to another level, and that really inspired me. Please keep it up and continue what your doing, I'm enjoying your videos señorita 😊
Hello dear! Oh thank you so much for your kind words! they mean SO MUCH, really :) ! I am very Excited to share my ideas really, and actually, I do use the same painting easel to paint indoors, specially if I am painting in small format, I like the efficiency of having the palette and the paints all together, so I can move around anywhere. Having a flat surface (where I stapled a "pocket") comes handy to be able to put it on top of a table. I am very happy it inspired you in any way!
Hi Diana! I will try, although I only have the photos of the process, the easel idea is originally from James Gurney :D, he has all the info. I will upload and record more process of making the things, it seems its more helpful :P
Great set up. I have just started plein air painting with oils. I am struggling to get the hang of oils as my videos clearly show. But all tips and ideas appreciated.
Hello there! thanks! This set up works for oils too! I also made a wet panels carrier (got a video on it) with a piece of foam lol. I do appreciate the slow drying time of oils - you can "move" the paint around and work more on it while gouache and its changing colors make me suffer. In oils as long as you remember that fat paint goes over lean, you will be all good ;)
That’s fair enough 🤣 tbh on rainy days that’s my go to option haha but my eyes get tired at some point with the screen, don’t you’re? Also I only get super energetic when it’s sunny ☀️🤪
Looks like a great setup. Thanks for the mention.

Nice set up! Very nice view ! and you did covered the basics !
Aww thank you so much Daniel! Much appreciated. I will try to cover more next time 😊🤗
Ahh! A chair! I have one but have never used it for plein air. Will be giving it a shot next time!
Yeah! It does help when you’ve been walking or hiking all day, and on wet zones where the soil is muddy, so you don’t get your pants wet 🤪🤪😅
It's great! Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you found it useful! :)))
Nice setup! Always fun to see other people’s painting gear :)
Thank you
Love this so much! Been watching all the gouache plein air videos and this is definitely my fave. So happy to have found your channel ^___^

Really nice! I’m gonna be making one for myself next week or so, so thanks. Also, a big fan of mr. Gurney here, he is an inspiration indeed!
Have fun!
Hey! That's awesome! Let us know how did it go! and yep, James totally inspired me into using gouache! FUN is all we want :P!
what dimension to make the Gurney easel?
Hello! Jame's easel is panel is 5.25 inches (13.3cm) by 11 inches (28cm); mine is a bit smaller (16 by 21 cm) but because I use the side panels. :)

Can you make a video of how you made your easel? That would be amazing! You have a new subscriber tfs!
