This is a more in depth video going over my plein air painting gear, specifically how I pack when traveling and backpacking, when gear is of the essence. I first came to this system when I needed to figure out how I would keep painting on the move, as I had been awarded the Donald Jurney Traveling Fellowship. It ended up being one of the best artistic experiences of my life thus far.

I have blick material canvas pads and fredrix canvas pad. One blick material canvas pad is 12x16 and one that's 16x20 and the fredrix one is 12x16. I wanted to bring the one of the 12x16 and the 16x20. My carry on is small but big but I wanted to carry the 16x20 but wont fit. It was for oil painting while going to see my family in Canada. If I use 2 or one canvas pad that's 12x16 what do I do if I bring back finished artwork that's not streached /framed saftly 0:16
I use fast drying titanim white and the paintings are dry in a few days, i store them in the pad
Hi Patrick! Wonderful video! I purchased one of your pochade boxes and I LOVE it. After your painting on paper is dry do you mount it to board? Would you mind explaining that process? If you do mount it to board I would be curious to hear what kind of glue you used? Thank you for sharing your process and beautiful work!
I really would like to to know how you adhere the paper to board as well and what kind of board.
Wonderful presentation Patrick. What a great trip you must have had. You’ve thought things out so well. I am 68 and have never done anything like this but am making my plein air/travel packs ready to do something outside. Very very inspiring.

question : could you have mailed some of your finished paintings back home, as you went?
also : never in my life had i seen such a MASSIVE carabiner! impressive...
The fact there are no palette cups that don't leak is quite exasperating :/
Not sure there's a point in mailing them back halfway. Risks them getting lost, possible hassle and time to fill out paperwork/customs. Doesn't really save weight or make sense for space because I would have to have it at the beginning too.

Lately I use a small glocusent light - it has three color temperatures and three brightness settings and is very small

Thank you for putting together this video! I loved your ideas on using oil paper. I personally use Cobra's water miracle oils so I don't have to worry about solvents but I think using paper is a brilliant idea..
I'm also in the process of designing my own "Gurney easel." It's hard though because I want it work across multiple mediums.

Haven't tried the water soluble oils yet, but I've heard good things about them, and super easy clean up!
The tension hinges I used for me easel were discovered through his blog, but I did some finicking to make them close shut flush!
And totally! I think the best part was that I wasn't only painting almost everyday, but also visiting fantastic museums and seeing amazing art! Cheers!

As far as water mixable oils, I'd highly recommend Cobra- they clean up much easier than w&n's artisans and have a buttery feel. :D

So a couple things…I use only sables so that too means only oil, no solvents. Have you tried a extra virgin olive oil for cleaning and dipping? You can use it daily and it will condition your brushes for the next day, especially will sable. And the other is have you tried medium gel instead of linseed oil? Safflower is also very awesome too.

havent tried the olive oil, but is the reason to use it because it's cheap? I use walnut oil for oil baths in my studio. Olive oil is a non drying oil, it might just prove terrible to your painting over time, I'd avoid it

Not really. When travelling I just use linseed oil, wipe the paint brush down of paint, keep them oiled so nothing dries
Such a helpful video, thank you! Do you have any issues with the paint on in your pochade box drying out? I’m sure that on your trip you were using them every day, but in general how long would you guess you can keep paint on your palette or in the box?
it depends on the color, some colors dry the next day, some take a week
My return trip my paints, $200+ worth, were taken from checked luggage because they considered them hazardous. I had mds with it and everything. 😢
ah I'm sorry to hear that, sometimes it's really bad luck, I'm always a little worried but we can only do so much
Hi, great vud! Did u build in slotted ridges or ledges within the 3 sides of your wet painting carrier box, to hold each card/ paintings in place? it seemed in the video like u slid them into place. Cud u share what these ledges are and do i just glue them in? Thankyou1
yes, I just glued them, they're small 3/16x1/4" bits of basswood from the hobby section at the art store

Thanks! To answer- 1. I am currently sold out as of earlier this morning, but I might make another batch in the coming months 2. I use it the most for greens or deep darks/browns (ivory black with a little cadmium red or orange actually makes a really rich deep brown). I NEVER use it when I see the color of something and try to mix a darker shade 👍

Hello Patrick, heading to France for the month of September to paint. I’m 57 and this is my first extensive trip to do nothing but paint. Thanks for your tips, much appreciated. Can I ask what size your paint box is and the size of Canson paper you were using. Shooting for at least a painting a day at least. Will need to be realistic about the size I can finish in a day for that to happen. Thanks! Eric
Thanks for the comment Eric - my paint box is 11x14", and i work on 9x12" surfaces, usually canson oil paper, but sometimes others. I find 9x12 to be a reasonable size to finish a painting within 2-4 hours, but smaller is faster. Lately, I have been doing more and more multi session paintings, as I want to make lessbwork of a higher quality rather than more work of a less quality. Hope the trip is wonderful!

i don't really use solvents in my own painting practice, aside from turpenoid natural for brush cleaning!

Thanks! practically I think it's too complicated for most people to spend a whole video on it. I was using table saw, chop saw, router, grind stones, orbital sanders.... I recommend people just buy a box ( not necessarily mine, just saying its a ton of work to make your own, if someone already has the tools to make it the can probably figure it out on their own)
@@patrickokrahow did you make your actual mixing palette on your easel? Did you paint the wood with an acrylic varnish or a wood varnish so you can mix your oils?

no but I've heard decent things about them!
How do you handle rags and paper towels as well as proper disposal of them while traveling?
When backpacking I used medium sparingly, and would carry a separate trash bag for rags. When I'm based somewhere for a few weeks at a time then I use any normal trash. I don't think you need to worry about spontaneous combustion unless rags are really soaked
Do you put a piece of glass in your palette box or do you just mix paint on the wood or with a varnish coated wood?
just natural wood finished with oil. over time it builds up a patina of its own. I make and sell them on my website as well, patrickokrasinski.com

Do you prime the oil paper with gesso or just paint straight into the paper?
I was working directly on the paper!

Correct- part of the reason I don’t use thinners is because I’ve developed a sensitivity to them over time and can get really bad headaches, but I’ll admit if I did use them painting would be a little easier 🤷♂️ oh well

Patrick do you worry about the canson paper not being archival?
Not often
It's a complex topic. It's a shame there's no truely great paper product out there. Arches is ok. Legion is terrible
The workability of the canson is fantastic between the texture and in-absorbency.
@@patrickokra I’ve tried the arches and really don’t care for how absorbent it is. Made it hard to spread the paint around. I picked up some strathmore oil paper which seems very similar to the canson but it at least says that the paper is acid free which is not something I could find about the canson so I’ll give it a shot. I don’t worry too much about archival surfaces but it would be a shame to sell a sketch only to have it have major problems after a year or two. Have you ever tried painting on loose canvas? Frederick’s sells a canvas pad as does blick that’s already primed.

The ball head is the B00K ball head that comes with the Sirui 5CX, and usually the quick release plate stays attached to my box 👍

Thank you for the lovely video, you answered a big chunk of questions I had about plein air painting. I wanted to ask specifically about the box you are using. Can you recommend other boxes similar to the one you’re using?
There’s a Raymar Panel Carrier that is pretty similar. A little bit bulkier but works the same I think

OH- my bad- I built that box myself, because there’s nothing quite like it. The new wave ugo boxes are sort of similar but I hate the glass palette and there not being room to always safely close it without getting paint in the lid, but it works fine. Sienna boxes is a bit different, but more affordable
