Such a clever modification! I love how you attach your water jar to the easel and your use of friction mats.

4/21/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Dani, I've come back to this video several times over the past two years because I like the way you have made it. It has been a source of a smile to me every time. You made James' easel so much better and my efforts have been more accomplished because of it. I had procrastinated. Thank you for freely sharing your insight and adjustments. I was a little dismayed to find that James was charging $15 for his how-to video, and I turned again to your good heart. Much love to you.

I love your attitude. It's the attitude consisting of snark, creativity, optimism, and perseverance that permeates my brain. So in one sense, I love MY attitude. Which is yours. Which makes me a narcissist or a stalker. My beloved wife will probably say it's one or the other... but only jokingly... I think. ANYWAY... wonderful video with wonderful ideas for the easel I will probably want to make for the first day I go plein air. Merci beaucoup madame! :-)

Oh wow that’s cool that you made a matt for the easel & a water jar container setup. A fantastic idea that I am going to have to give a try! I love 💕 these modifications!! I have made my versions of the James Gurney easel from 3 different sizes of bamboo cutting boards (4 inches x 6 inches, 8 inches x 10 inches, & 9 inches x 12 inches). Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us!! 🥰

I have been wanting to design my own as well, loved your ideas and I want to "borrow" some or all of them. I have been using some of that friction mat to unironically capture cat litter when Artie the cat steps out of his box. bravo on all the ideas.

Brilliant! I am going to use several of you suggestions. FYI: The Koi set are designed to hold a paper or sketch book in the lid, to paint on while you hold it, that’s why it doesn’t lay flat. Most of them come with the detachable mixing trays. Thank for the video, it was great.

Well, you are very innovative to say the least. One thing, your modified hinges are way cool, but you might like to know that that type of hinge is (almost) readily available at a good hardware store or (since you mentioned it) Home Depot, etc. They are known as "no-mortise hinges or barrel hinges," etc., and are very reasonably priced for a pair (less than $5). Thank you for your fascinating input.

My spine and replaced hips are causing me a lot of pain these days and I need someone cheery and inventive near. I love to re-engineer (or de-engineer) some things. Thoughts after seeing your video, Maybe just glue some of the non stick mat to the bottom of the pallet cases?
Does that tripod make it to eye level? Or an extension 1/4 -20 rod necessary?

Ha! I've painted (oils) for over 50 years and never used an easel.
I lay my canvas flat and paint more as if I were writing a letter, supporting my arm, wrist and hand from a bridge.
Far and away more comfortable than conventional methods.

Isabella Ribeiro I made this before James Gurney came out with his official tutorial, but it follows along those lines because I tried to design mine off of the one he uses in all his videos... But he has a longer video that can be purchased, and shorter ones here on youtube that describe his easel. I used the same hinges he recommends (purchased off Amazon) and then just regular super magnets from the hardware store. If I make another one, I might film it and make a tutorial, but no plans at the moment, no.

@@lethyguaimare they're on Amazon. They're called torque friction hinges, or sometimes just frction hinges. They're probably the most expensive thing, but they're vital. I could link you to it, but they come in all sizes and shapes. You can pick the one that you like the looks of best :)

If you keep painting small, you will never learn to paint big or even a size that is marketable. Painting all of your paintings small is a good way to not learn. You wont even own the tools to paint bigger.
