How Defense Contractors Make Billions Off Missile Sales
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 гру 2020
- Missile sales are the number two defense export in the U.S. and production is dominated by a handful of companies such as Raytheon, Boeing and Lockheed Martin. As technology advances, will expensive missiles and hypersonic glide weapons dominate the market, or could start-ups and cheaper technology change the missile economy?

A small correction.. Raytheon is THE largest missile manufacturer in the world. Next big step in missile technology is of course the hypersonics game.. Hundreds of billions of $ are on the table...

Yes, Táiwān is the keystone to preventing unchallengeable CPC expansion and keeping watch over PLA naval movements into open ocean (especially the nuclear-armed submarines). Táiwān is also the China with whom America fought with to stop imperialism, first by the Japanese, and now by the Communists.
Really the only way for America to not intervene is if Táiwān itself votes to reunify with the Mainland, and the "stability"-seeking Party has done a bang up job making China overall toxic to associate with.
But do the missles know where they are?
There should be an option for cheaper blanks. It's great for posturing, Must look really scary but do little to no harm.

To say that Taiwanese purchase of the 400 harpoon missiles is an "investment" is a joke. The purchase of missiles from US gave no inherent advancement to Taiwan's capability in its own missile and rocket development technology, not only that US conveniently always only approve sales of defense technology when Taiwan's own Defense related Research Institute were on the verge of breakthrough in their own defense technology. Doing so the Taiwanese would have to bend to US pressure, forcing a military sales and cut in the budget of Taiwan development of their own technology. This creates a long-term reliance on US for defense and leaves no funding for own research in defense technology. For now there are many countries stuck in the same situation like Taiwan, feeling pressured by a rising China defense and military presence many countries felt like being a "Guard Dog" for US while still being ask to paid protection fees.

Russia and China are way ahead of the US with regards to hypersonic things. While Russia is starting to deploy and mass produce those missiles on their planes, ships and subs, the US is still in the development and testing stage, years behind. Too bad.

To be perfectly honest, if China wants to take Taiwan by force it will probably have to level the island to do it. However if Taiwan truly wants to have full protection under the US it probably should apply for statehood to the US, at that point i don't think China would take the move to attack it as it would fall under the US umbrella permanently. Taiwan going it alone is increasingly a desperate gamble as China has shown in Hong Kong and the South China Sea, it is consolidating and growing bold as it's power grows.
Taiwan wants America's protection, not become part of America. That's like saying Ukraine should deter Russian aggression by applying for statehood in the US. That's the most far fetched thing I've ever heard.
@@chrischong6613 Actually what the Ukraine should do is apply for statehood to the EU, that would be a better analogy. It isn't really that far fetched if you know how entrenched Taiwan is inside the US government and how connected it is.
Still, it would solve the problems either way.
When you are tiny and the bully on the block is messing with you, do you just let him bully you and take you over or do you go to the big guy in town who can handle the bully?
@@rd9102 Ukraine applying to join the EU is not a good analogy to Taiwan becoming a sovereign U.S. state. The EU is a multinational organisation not a country.
A more realistic scenario is for Taiwan to join a Pacific NATO equivalent like the now defunct SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) which ended in 1977. Joining the U.S. as a state on the other hand is totally absurd given the cultural, linguistic, geographical, historical and political differences. Going to the big guy in town for protection is not the same as marrying the big guy in town for protection.
@@chrischong6613 The EU is a supranational organization that is effectively one state with a weak central government. Almost exactly like the United States under the Articles of confederation before the Constitution existed. The EU is akin to the US federal government. Sure they don't have political cohesion yet, but that is the direction they are heading or at least trying to head.
The idea that Taiwan wouldn't fit into the US as a state is ridiculous, Hawaii did quite fine and continues to do so to this day even though they have all of the "cultural, linguistic, geographical, historical and political differences" you brought up.
The fact of the matter is that while Taiwan is important, it gains much MUCH more importance as a state inside the United States then it does as a stand alone island fortress. It also gains legitimacy legally as a territory of the United States then it has with China insisting it is still a part of China and using that not only as leverage in international forums where they quash anything to do with Taiwan but also as a tool they will use to go to war once conditions are acceptable to do so...and that is what China is going to do, it's just a matter of time.
I don't have much interest either way, i am simply stating reality. China is simply too close in relation to Taiwan and as their military power grows it will simply have too much force it can bring to bare on the island. Those are facts, without a constant military presence (from the US or other nations to help face an invasion) or legal protections under a different government it is only a matter of time before China invades and takes it over, that is very clear to anyone taking even the smallest look.
Good luck in the new year.
Luckily, China has a MAJOR sealift problem so they will not be able to get enough boots on the ground to quickly capture Taiwan. At least for now…
USA: We don't sell defensiv missiles to turkey.
