South Korea wants to become one of the world's biggest arms dealers

  • From 2018 to 2022, South Korea was the ninth largest weapons supplier globally, ahead of Israel, the Netherlands and Turkey.
In recent years, South Korea has edged out stiff competition from Western defense manufacturers and cheaper Chinese developers with government support, attractive pricing and faster delivery times.
Seoul has ambitions to be the fourth-largest weapons exporter by 2027, after the United States, Russia and France.
“The government will nurture the defense industry into a state-of-the-art strategic industry that leads economic growth,” South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has stated.
Today, the biggest South Korean defense companies include Hanwha, Korea Aerospace Industries, LIG Nex1 and Hyundai Rotem.
“The Korean government is fairly supportive in approving the technology transfers and exports of some very crucial parts and technology,” Kim Dae-young, an executive vice president at Hanwha Aerospace, told CNBC.
Jumong Kim, a defense analyst, noted that South Korea’s competitiveness comes from a few important and distinctive factors.
“First, fast delivery timeline. Second, manufacturing efficiency and prowess. Third, strong governmental willingness to support defense contractors. Fourth, high demands of defense products because of confrontational situation vis-a-vis North Korea and China in the region,” he said.
Oskar Pietrewicz, a defense analyst from Poland, said that the needs of the South Korean military also ensures that its defense industry maintains a high production capacity.
“Korea has lots of weapons and has the potential to deliver them very quickly,” Pietrewicz noted.
But are these factors enough for South Korea to become one of the world’s biggest arms dealers? Watch the video to find out.

It's still like that now, but what would happen if North and South Korea were to be unified? And the Manchurian region of China was originally the land of Koreans. If it can influence that area, it will truly become a superpower. However, as a liberal democratic country, not a totalitarian country, it will become a leading country in all fields, including politics and culture etc.

Korea, with its small territory and small population, has maintained its history for over 5,000 years despite being invaded, and is currently the world's third most technologically advanced country and first in technological innovation. With this technological prowess, it has achieved the world's 5th largest military power and also has economic power and cultural influence such as kpop and kdrama. Korea is one of the developed countries in Asia, like Japan and Singapore, and they are a clear example of self-made men and should be celebrated. Why are only some Chinese and Japanese willing to criticize Korea? It is clear that there was help from the United States, but what about Japan? Hmm...well, didn't they also develop by copying Western technology?

In addition to these resources, it also plays a very important role like living culture, education and inclination towards foreign gas workers and foreign fellow citizens. Another way to look at it is that Germany and the UK have weapons that were designed specifically to combat whatever Russia had and the benefit of Germany being where they are on the map meant that the Leopard 2 would be suited for combat in colder climates/environments (despite their service in the middle-east). Leopard 2 has also been tested in combat.
You could make the argument that the SK K2 tank is newer and thus should be better but it hasn't been combat tested and it was designed as more of a general purpose MBT then one specifically to combat Russian Armor so the Leo2 could still hold an advantage in its design.
The SK K2 was supposed to be still under evaluation by the Norwegian military and im not sure if this is still on going or if they have already made up their minds to stick to the Leo2's

    • @realtalk6195
      @realtalk6195 5 місяців тому +25

That's only the case with Israeli weapons. All their arms are foreign tech. All their missile systems have US components and needs approval for transfer to any other country. Even their kamikaze drones were a result of buying out German tech after the West German government abandoned it. Other countries have components from the UK, US and Germany, giving them veto rights over transfer. Indian weapons are also similarly full of foreign components, including France and Russia.
South Korea uses a lot of Russian tech that they've either reverse-engineered, or in the case of the KM-SAM codeveloped with Russia. South Korea's KF-21 fighter jet was codeveloped with the US and will need its approval for transfer. South Korea has recently developed domestic engines and transmissions to replace the German ones in their tanks, so that Germany can no longer veto sales in the future. Turkiye is going the same direction, initially using the South Korean ones as a stop-gap while the domestic ones finish development and testing.

In peacetime, it may feel like "a bottomless pit" as you need to keep pumping out tons of money. Even if there is a financial crisis and the country goes bankrupt, you still have to put money into R&D. This is an effort to network with our allies in order for South Korea to own survive.

The countries I listed came to mind quickly as they are small, have sea, land, and air needs for weapons systems. The same could be said for each of the NATO countries. Most countries actually as it help fill out a decent industrial base for the country.
