To be fair, when Klaus said "A selfless act inspired another" he did not know about Jasper's true intentions. So in his mind, it really was selfless.

I think it was about how adults in the town also started being nice to each other alongside with children, ever though they didn't get any toys. Like where one lady gifted a jam after kids harvested berries and other lady made her a pie in response. And grumpy old man that injured a leg and got helped by kids then constructed a playground

Thank you for your kind words, I worked on this movie for a bit more than a year and it is incredibly gratifying to see the positive response to our work. Your idea about the liar reveal trope is interesting but tbh it was so hard to imagine the final outcome while we were making the movie that I think most of us were just surprised that it actually worked as a whole when we saw the final product :)
I think this scene is intended more as an emotional climax rather than a believable plot point, and in that regard I think it is really effective! It was for me at least, even though I knew the story by heart haha

I think the whole "a selfless act spurs on another" in context of the film is more about how you can start doing good things for selfish reasons but if you do it enough it'll become second nature to you and you'll start actually acting selflessly like how Vesper starts the whole Santa thing to get more letters but ultimately continues it because of the joy it brings to children and how it improves the town.
Virtue is shown as habitual not unlike Aristotelian virtue ethics.

Imagine how much stronger the ending would have been if the kids woke up and there were no toys.
No toys, and it seems like they’re going to go back to their old ways immediately, but then it cuts to them giving their toys to each other. They realise maybe Mr. Klaus is overworked, it’s unfair of them to expect him to do so much, and they can look out for each other. Maybe some have even tried their hands at making toys themselves, PROVING the heads of the feuding families wrong when they say the children are just being bribed.

The moment you are born, you only think about yourself. Empathy is just the ability to put yourself into someone else's shoes. AKA, what would you feel if you were that person, putting yourself before them. By no means, being selfish is bad, because of that we can do kind acts.

I didn't mind the "spoiled city kid sent to the boonies" plot in this film, mostly because it did put a bit of a twist on it. Most of the time when a movie has this plot the town/residents are already really great (if odd), and the main character has to have it repeatedly hammered home that a simple life is better/more meaningful than their old life in the city.
This movie had the town be terrible, giving Jesper a legitimate reason to want to leave, and it focused on how Jesper and Klaus changed the town for the better instead of getting him to see how great it is. I found that oddly refreshing.

      Probably not though.
Princess and the frog suffered from two things:
      1) Disney's own self-sabotaging, by marketing 3d animation as the "new best thing", despite the fact that animation-wise, the 2D animation of the 90's and early 2000's was absolutely stunning and I would argue, visually superior to anything made in 3D, to this very day. Disney basically WANTED 2D to fail. And because Disney basically has a monopoly at this point, there is nothing that could be done about it. Kids are eager to follow the new hype and stick to their own stupidity, and parents don't give a crap so long as it keeps their brats quiet. Behold, the death of art through industry.
      2) Princess and the Frog is a mediocre film in terms of story-telling. It's villain is uninteresting and is barely in the movie to begin with, the main character is basically perfect in every single way, and the only one that goes on an actual character arc is the male frog. There is barely any heart in the film, other than the music.
If Disney wanted to test out 2D animation, P&TF was the worst choice.
So my guess is that no, 2D animation will not make a comeback if Disney maintains their practical if not theorectical monopoly of western animation. Given how willing Disney has shown itself to simply milk a franchise into the ground with live-action remakes that lack any and all creative integrity, it would be naïve to think they would have the artistic integrity to bring back some actual creative vision.
Oh well, at least there is still anime, though Japanese studios are going through a horrible phase of capitalist greed as well. Hard to find a single studio that isn't grasping for financial aid at this point. Ugly-ass CGI stiffness seems to have become the norm. We can also thank pirating for that.

While i agree it’s highly overused and cliche, the idea of the “Liar revealed” trope i think has less to do with the reveal, but the point is more about the emotional betrayal
From knowing someone you care about and or who means something to you, abused your trust, lied and or manipulated you.
if you look at it in those terms i have less problems with the trope, being as the point is that the turmoil comes from knowing someone you care about didn’t respect you and or was using you
which can be hurtful and make people dismissive.
Now again the issue is its so cliche and often had assed and or not given proper weight that it falls flat
one good example is How to Train your dragon, when Stoick learns that hiccup has been keeping toothless
and he disowns him, when he leaves the hut you see him stagger and his facial features react as we see him contemplate what he’s just done, and it gives the entire thing a different feel and weight to it other than
    “you lied to me”

It does have a subplot about family, but it takes a backseat to the main discussion of belief and how belief evolves (and how belief works in a world where the stuff you believe in is real). It’s a great fun either way :)

I think with even some faults, Klaus is one of those movies like Arthur Christmas that will be forever in peoples hearts because it is such a universally understood film that people can relate to it. I think it’s on the same level as Arthur’s Christmas and that I could see it being played in homes every year because of its simple message that does need to be said for everyone to hear.

I agree pretty much 100% with what you've said. From the emperor's new groove to the comparison's to the dogtor from treasure planet the cliche liar revealed trope and your idea to change that. You've also brilliantly described thing's I didn't take into account, like the town being a character.
Anyone who's seen movies dating from at least the 80's to the 90's knows all to well the liar revealed trope and knew it was coming in Klaus. I was hoping that it would be such a non-issue for this movie, like the dad just shows up at Jespers office and is like "it's time to go" but instead it's the same thing as any other reveal. "How could you? You lied to us!" It's so pointless. Like, what are they gonna do? Rip all the decorations down and take back all the presents from the kids?
You idea of having it so they instead thank him for selfish yet helpful motives and action's would've been brilliant. Maybe his girlfriend being mad at first for feeling betrayed would make sense but then Klaus steps in to stand up and thank Jesper.
Still, cliche tropes aside, great movie and great review.

    • @MasuxAnderson
      @MasuxAnderson 5 років тому +13

I also don't get why Alva was so mad, she was literally doing the exact same thing as Jesper for the same reason. And it's not like he's still in it to just get out, he probably wouldn't go as far to try and make toys on his own time if that was the case.

    • @mitchhamilton64
      @mitchhamilton64 5 років тому +9

@@MasuxAnderson you could make the argument that she at least kept to herself instead of using the kids and town.
All in all though, I think it's a pointless conflict. I wish western movies took inspiration from anime and had conflicts be just character conflicts instead of stuff like liar revealed. Because as I was watching the movie I was thoroughly enjoying Jespers growth but my enjoyment comes to a halt as soon as the town's leaders showed upon screen. It would've been different if for instance they tried to ruin Jesper and his efforts at every turn only to realize that it was pointless as their traditions was being buried by kindness and goodwill.

One thing that I did really enjoy about this movie was the fact that one of it's tropes, the 'sent somewhere until you can achieve something', was done slightly different. In nearly every version of this, the sufferer has had to stand up to the person who sent them there in the first place. However, this isn't really the case in Klaus? Jesper's dad has to ask him about it and is remarkably understanding and is super supportive of his desire to stay, so it's such a nice change! We're growing into the time when parents need to actually listen to their kids and be supportive of them wanting to grow, not the child having to break all contact with their parents when it does come time for them to leave the nest

I then proceeded to try out drawing with a more cartoony art style. Now I’ve forgotten everything I learned about anatomy and all my characters will forever have noodle bodies. This is a curse, but a welcome one.

I was divided on this one. The animation and voice-cast were stellar, but a lot of the jokes don't land which is a problem when inspiring laughter is one of the main goals of the film.
However, the last line of dialogue, which I won't spoil for those of you who haven't watched the film, touched my heart in the way that we say Christmas specials do but which we rarely actually experience for ourselves.

I finally saw this movie, and I loved it.
I did not have a problem with the "Liar Revealed" trope here because it worked for me.
Klaus directly asked what Jesper was getting out of it, and they were interrupted by an ambush.
Klaus mentioned doing a Christmas thing next year, and Jesper was trying to tell him there might not be a next year for them, but Klaus was so preoccupied with everything.
Alva told Jesper she spent all of the money she saved because she no longer wanted to leave, and she spoke over him to show him why she changed her mind.
The 6,000 letter goal was right there on the wall. The feuding families saw it and pretty much knew that was the way to get rid of him. The postman's goal is done, so he would no longer have a reason to stay.
All of that was character development for Jesper in order to get him to change the same way that the community had. It was necessary for the story they were telling.
And like when Jesper asks if the whole chase with the decoy presents wasn't worth it, Klaus says he "wouldn't say that". Because all of those sequences of events eventually led to the feud ending.

I really like your take on how "a liar revealed" could have gone, with Klaus and others being understanding and thankful to Jesper for his time and effort. Then that kindness weighing on his decision to leave vs stay. It's still my favorite recent Christmas movie, but that would have been a thematic improvement for sure.
