It's not ex-ex... "X" is latin for ten. So XX reads twenty, for the 20 malt masters who chose the casks.
Also... 17 Ex Bourbon Casks 2 sherry casks and one Port wood cask were selected for this blend.
Good lordie, it took a long time for someone to correct us on this one, LOL! Geesh, we sound like a bunch of dummies....hehe. Seriously though, much appreciated for the information. Of course, now I want to go research the 20 Malt Masters to see what types of influences they each had.... Good stuff. Thanks again, ~Mark
This is still a single malt whisky. All the whiskies come from a Single Distillery and are 100% MALT whisky. Theres a vatting process to marry together!
Really enjoyed this video. You guys have learned a lot and developed your own pallets which leads to a very interesting conversation. Keep it up!
We will continue until we run out of scotch and the start over. ~Andrew
Beautiful bottle design, I might pick this up for holiday gifting.
I love this dram. Full and buttery. Can’t wait to see how the 18 plays out.
I think you guys are being to critical. It is a great blend. I very much enjoy it. And I don’t care what they put in it. It’s just an enjoyable scotch.

The great divide! great review fellas, I went to Glenfiddich last year and tried this and the IPA and enjoyed the IPA much better. Keep doing what your doing, Cheers.
This was a fun one just for the conversation it inspired both before and after the video. I always like talking it through with the other dummies as well as all the comments we get from viewers. That’s what it’s all about.

Well I have one but haven't opened it up yet.To many open bottles right now. Good review gent's . Looking forward to the uncorking soon. My first scotch was a Glenfiddich 15 and I liked it . Cheers
Doesn't sound like a bad situation to be in......too many bottles that is! ~Mark
interesting discussion - thanks!!
I purchased all three (IPA, XX and Winter Storm) but haven’t opened them yet. Sadly I only get to have a dram or two every other weekend or so. Not to mention I’m usually on a solo mission when I do get time to enjoy. Who knows when I will get to them but one thing I will say is that I enjoyed your debate on the bottle and I’m looking forward to seeing what my interpretation will be. Cheers!
Donald Payne probably best to keep it a few years. Price will rise . I have Johnnie Walker xr21 I haven’t opened it yet but been told it’s smooth
Please tell me you've opened them now? I'm about to purchase all 4 experimental bottles. What do you think of all 4 ? My fav is ipa !
I just tried this one. The salt recommendation makes a lot of sense. The whiskey has a powdery and dry taste profile (beyond furtal). I feel like it's the same as salt. Also, the caramel note is prominent. So it's praline for my taste.
With it being non chill filtered, I am leaning towards natural color. Especially since it comes in a tinted bottle. I have this at home as well but have not opened mine yet.
I was leaning that way as well but you never know unless they say it. It was worth opening but I felt it could have been more.
- Shawn
Curious about that one! Cheers fellas
I liked the XX most out of the 3 in the experimental series. The IPA didn’t do it for me but the third (Winter Storm) was weird and is very overpriced. That one was aged on Canadian Ice Wine casks which gave it a funny and special taste.
We've got a bottle of the IPA on hand to review....stay tuned! ~Mark
Had this when it was released at an event where we tasted 12, 15, 18, IPA cask and XX back to back with a Glenfiddich ambassador. Of the two special release - I preferred the XX cask, but I didn’t think either of them were particularly special especially given the price (I think you’re paying for marketing to come up with the back story). Overall I prefer the 15!
Can't really argue that, especially when there are some very good Glenfiddich's out there (ahem, the 18 SBR).... ~Mark
jobak 100%. The XX is good but my favourite is the 15
I bought this when it first came out and I did not enjoy it until about half way through the bottle. With that in mind, I agree with Drew & Shawn. Their is nothing unique about this bottle except the marketing. If 20 ambassadors were able to choose 20 casks of their choice, this would be a Kick Ass vatting of malts. This tastes like it is a 12 yr scotch and I would not purchase another bottle. I will be enjoying the 2 bottles of the Macallan Classic Cut I just received. Great review guys.
I would have liked the chance to try a few of the casks before they blended to see what was exceptional about them. It seems like a much better marketing stunt than a scotch at this point. Doesn’t do them any good to only sell mediocre scotch with the marketing. It means fewer people will try it next time.
- Shawn
I totally agree Shawn.
Had this one at the distillery tour. I asked the guide about the casks but he couldn't tell me (it's a secret).
It's definitely getting better with some drops of water and air but I thought it was too young. Perhaps would put it below the 15 quality wise & it is miles away from the 18 IMO.
BTW single casks - Glengoyne did something like that. Some ppl who worked at the distillery were allowed to pick a cask which was then bottled and sold. Great stuff but you had to pay a little more than 80 bucks for a bottle ^^
I think I'd appreciate Glengoyne's approach a little better...especially if they bottled at cask strength! ~Mark
+Scotch 4 Dummies They were.
I would love to dissect this whisky.
This one really benefits from some airing but with you 4 draining the bottle it probably doesn't get a chance, lol. A challenge to decipher but worthy when you do, I didn't get it until about the third time I sat down with it. The age and youth meld together where you can tell some is older but the bright notes of younger malt shores it up. That and the higher abv helps make it really interesting if you give it time.I use a glass straw to add precisely 4 drops of water to 25ml and that really helps most Scotches open up without diluting much. Is this sort of a marketing gimmick? Yes. Does it work if you let it settle? Yes. I agree it would be nice to deconstruct the individual components and who knows maybe that will be their next gimmick. The divorced dram!
I can see that. We are actually letting that sit and will come back and retry it. Some of these need a little time.
- Shawn
Sipping on a dram while watching...
I'd be interested to hear what you'd say about the Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix. A similar concept of vetting various casks and ages. 🤔
*vatting
Thanks for the suggestion - we'll try to get a bottle and review. -Drew
I don't know what is with me and Glenfiddich distiller, we don't like each other at all.
So far I tried Glenfiddich 12, 15, 18, reserve cask and this one Project XX and have to be honest the only one that suited my palate was the Glenfiddich 18 and would by another bottle.
Regarding this particular malt I can say that it is spicy and quite mallow at the same time.
I am I speyside guy, but also like the whiskies from other regions as well, and I don't know the reason why the Glenfiddich does not suite me at all.
Could it be beacause of their barrels? Do you guys have similar issues as well?
Please advise on your experience, thanks.
I can say the one bottle from this distillery we all still love is the 18 small batch reserve. It’s just a nice bottle all around. We were not thrilled with the project XX. The 12 and 15 are more entry level and honestly we all enjoyed the 15 but I haven’t had it in a long time so not as memorable as some other15s. It is a high volume distillery and maybe some of the quality gets lost in the volume.
- Shawn
I agree with you 100 Percent. Hopefully you have tried the 14yr, So far that's the only Glenfiddich I like.
this way you get all the variety in one bottle
tough to get 20 different single barrels
If you follow this link you will see an image of the barrels used and what floor they were on.

You might need to add your birth date, country and state to get to that page but if you are curious the information is there.
Thanks for the link.
Just enjoy the taste. Its good :)
I have no doubt it will be finished off just not sure about buying another. Thanks for watching!

A lot of work is fun.
What do u guys think ok Jack Daniels number 7 whiskey l like for a glass jack with ice or Jack and coke l love Jack still taste better than some of cheap scotch out there!!??😜😜😜😂😂😂
$74 it needs to be Great! Looking at a Glengoyne 15 for $69! Don't know until you try!😁
I am lucky i live in Nederland in this case, bought them bought on discount, Glengoyne 15 for 40 Euro, and Glenfiddich project xx for 35 Euro.
A cynic might suggest that the only difference with this vatting of casks is that the master blender could only work with casks selected by amateurs. I'm not a cynic. Well, a wee bit. But I do believe what's been done here is whimsy. It's a nice back story but it's probably one of those scenarios where the back story interferes with the possible enjoyment of the whisky. For sure some of the casks will be fully used while others will be tiny amounts. I wonder what the out turn count is? You don't get a lot of bottles from 20 casks... 10k? Nice to see you happily disagree. Off to catch the cage match....
I have to agree with Aqvavitae. This really seems like a complete scam by the distillery designed to play upon human emotion with fancy packaging, and in order to deal with the question of what can we do with these few extra barrels we have laying around but not enough to release with a consistent taste. There have been numerous studies that show that if humans "think" they are getting something more rare or "special" that they think it tastes better. It is the way we are wired. Marketing and sales folks have used this information to manipulate our opinions and desires for years. I would support limited addition release if they were designed and engineered to be a limited edition, where they intentional use a different cask, or a different malt as a way to experiment or special style of whisky, but a suicide whisky blend is just a scam IMHO.
I agree Aqvavitae, the casks that were chosen were obviously young or casks they didn't know what to use for.
I totally agree Everwind
It’s nice to see I’m in good company with my opinion. I wish they could have released something a little better in the bottle. Marketing like this makes me rethink how I feel about the distillery.

Scotch 4 Dummies it's not bad whisky, as you point out. Certainly, here in the UK it's not very expensive either. But they go to a lot of trouble communicating the back story without a single nod to maturity. It's difficult to generate innovative new concepts inside the tightly controlled Scotch restrictions I know, and they made a decent stab at a fun idea. But does that 'fun' experiment translate into intrigue in the glass? Or is it just another NAS Speysider dressing smart to disguise it's youth? It's hardly a rip off, just gimmicky and yet bizarrely forgettable. Oh. And twice the price of the clean, pure, subtle complexity of the 12yo.
You can't hide teen pimples with a sharp suit.

You got ripped off
still had to review it.... :-( ~Mark
A 3 out of 10?
Mikey our scale is up to 4 as in how many fingers of scotch you want us to pour.
