As a Dominican man born and raised on the island in the 70's, I remember the old folks still mentioning how good it was when Trujillo was alive.
And not even being taught the real history of those decades.
In fact, to this day most of my family loves the strong man, father figure that certain politicians display- and I believe it's because they grew up misinformed about the Dominican Republic history just like I was.
My family moved to NYC in the mid 80's and it was shocking to discover the truth about my country and Haiti.
And yes Trujillo was a monster.

I'm sure it was not intentional on Trujillo's part, but this whole program where would keep his leadership on edge by forcing them to come on his walks with him has shadows of a micro version of a practice in 1600s-1860s Japan called the sankin kotai. It was an edict that the Shogun would use to control the daimyo (local provincial warlords), by forcing them and their families to uproot their families, leave their territories, and live at the capital for a year. The affect was twofold. The daimyo's control as a leader of their respective fiefdoms was greatly diminished, as they were disconnected from where they were supposed to hold power. It became difficult for any individual leader to gain the support of his people and rally folks for a power play against the Shogun, since they essentially were required to be absent for large periods of time. Furthermore, the schedule was random, and you could be summoned at any time - so leaders could never settle. There are obvious differences (length of time, etc) between the Sankin kotai and Trujillo's walks, but the similarities just go to show that the strategies of a strongman are damn near culturally universal.

Louis XIV of France had a very similar strategy forcing the French nobility to live at Versailles. Room and board were covered, but they ended up racking up huge debts anyway due to the huge number of parties they had to attend.

    From Wikipedia:
In the mid-1950s, he was sent to study at the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. While there, and with Rubirosa as his liaison, Trujillo skipped class and took off for Hollywood, eventually embarking on an affair with actress Kim Novak. Trujillo became notorious for buying luxury cars, mink coats, and jewelry for beautiful girls during his stay. Trujillo's flashy gift-giving made the national news and members of the United States Congress were openly questioned by the press about what real use was being made of foreign aid given to the Dominican Republic. At one point a bumper sticker began appearing on the cars of girls in Los Angeles that read: "THIS CAR WAS NOT A GIFT FROM RAMFIS TRUJILLO".
Since his attendance at the military school was erratic at best, he was denied his diploma after completion. This fact greatly infuriated, and at the same time, humiliated his father.

@@williamtesting3468 he was a dictator though, secret police, elections were rigged in favor of him/his party, if you wanna say the guy was better than most then that’s an argument, but don’t say he wasn’t a dictator or much less a great one because he’s done sketchy shit to remain in power.

Every time you mention some anti-communist violence Eisenhower approved, you should remind the listeners that the John Birch Society believes that Eisenhower is a communist.

I will warn you; it is catchy…

      Uh, I just realised I didn't translate.
      "Man like Putin haha"
More like '"Monster like Putin know what I mean?"'
But I used the clumsy transliterated word for Monster, so it's like frankenstein's monster, but I don't know the word for monster like evil. Oops. You'd think translating for immigration law would teach you that word, but oh well.
