  • How to climb a rope, the proper and most efficient way for a Soldier. ALWAYS go with the first method, which I later learned was called the "Spanish rope climb." (Kind of a weird name but whatever). Practice this perishable skill often, you don't want to be the Soldier who cannot climb a rope, ever!     I enlisted in 1976 when I was 17.Having strong hands/grip strength is very helpful. I was in the right place at the right time and did one enlistment . I was a Pathfinder in the 82nd and the 11b on an A-team .

    Great video. During basic on the confidence course was the first time in the Army that I had to climb ropes but nobody taught us how.I just used arms strength and made it with ease. I guess i was lucky. But never learned how to climb believe it or not. I finally learned 35 years later thanks:) TODAY!

      Same here I had no clue and I was a goon 6’4” 240 so I needed the legs but I was super strong with the upper body so I could cheat it but wish I new this back then haha Aw well

      Didn't have the strength to do it, got 2 ft away from the top and slid right down. Never seen 2nd platoon Senior Drill Sargent laugh before or since.

      Some here! I used 100% upper body strength, felt like I was going to die, embarrassed that “it was so hard for me and smaller men did it so easily, even releasing with one hand! (And shouts of “Use your FEET! Use your FEET!” didn’t help as I’d never been shown how before!)

    when you use the J hook, your knees must be angled outwards like a sumo squat to prevent ankle strain. a legs-forward-cinch is for the S wrap method. with S wrap, you "sit" your way up the rope, with J hook, you "squat" your way up. the two methods are just like regular deadlifts versus sumo deadlifts. both methods should be safe and injury-free if the correct form is used

    I couldn't help watching this as I always was a very good climber. Now the point I wish to make is how times have changed. Because "we" have learned this at primary school during gym classes. I'm 54.
    Also, with respect of course, I'm not sure whether this is a perishable skill. I don't believe so. Do it once or twice right and then you're good to go forever. My experience that everybody, , women, men, old, young can become good rope climbers. The only ones who "failed", from what I've seen, were the overweight. Even then it might be a confidence thing.

      Same here. I have that course next week. Been practicing on a rope that's a bit thinner so I have to really clamp on tight.
      But I have climbed actual rope that obstacle courses use. It was just as he showed here; all on the legs and not so much upper body, if you got the technique

      Good point regarding J hook. I did use that technique to get through Air Assault though. Just my preference. 😃👍🏾🇺🇸

      Did Air Assult back in 05. The up side is there is only one rope you have to climb and its on the Obstacle course and is about as high as a rooftop on a regular 1 story house. Good luck in school.

    Great video as always! Went to a foreign military course and we had to climb the rope without using your feet like you did, to get in. The only time I actually completed it was on the test day because I was so full of adrenaline and didn't want to fail!

    By far my favorite skill, super fun and I'd suggest learning before you need to know it, I just learned how to climb the rope recently and I love it.
    I'm in RSP for the guard till August of next year, and when I first tried I couldn't figure it out, so I found a rope in a gym and just started by mounting and moved up to climbing, took about two days of messing around with it.
    Definitely a useful skill I'm glad the army chooses to have soldiers climb ropes.
    I'm gonna learn to go down the rope without dismounting as my next task!

    When I went to Air Assault school, the J-Hook worked a lot better for me and took a lot of the upper body strain away, S-Hook doesn't lock-in as well for me, could be my Danners, I don't know... Rope climbing is huge at Ft Campbell, and the majority of the soldiers in the 101st competitions use the J-Hook. Just make sure you get the technique down first, and see which one works best for you.

    We're taught to not climb on the arms but actually just hold on, bring the feet up and then push with the legs to climb (BEL army). The foothold is the exact same, it puts less strain on the arms but takes some getting used to. The trick is to then pull your legs up as high as possible (or as close to your hands as possible) and just straighten out.

    This dude is a physical specimen like they say there’s levels to this crap. I joined when I was 35 and went to airborne and I thought that was a huge accomplishment. I should of joined when I was young . I was 18 in 1988 and there wasn’t any info about this I didn’t know they had rangers special forces nothing had no clue not saying I would of made it . I’m glad I did join n serve I didn’t wanna live being a freedom moocher so at least I did my part .

    I used the J hook first time I had to get up a rope. It worked well enough but I get where your comming from. I'm going to use the S hook next time.
    Method 3 is pretty slick.

    Had to climb a rope and hit the top post before coming down to the Recondo school before eating chow every day. Then, you would get back in line at the parade rest, attention, and advance forward, assume attention, and snap back into parade rest until you reached the chow hall. Lived in small wooden dwelling in the woods and lived out of our duffel bags when given assignments, we would do our rehursal and go out and conduct the assignment accordingly. Was an awesome school. I'm not sure if it exists now.

    I was a combat engineer, it you flip your loops of the rope the pull the end thru, you make knots at intervals.

    I am possibly getting a walk on position for air assault. I’ve always used my upper body strength when it came to the rope so i figured i would learn before heading out.

    I've done it with the J hook method which seemed easier because one foot stood on top of the rope. Will have to try the S method. Don't want to break my ankle. And, seems to be better for coming down.

    great info. I was wondering tho if this is meant to more of a workout than practical application. climbing up an repelling or climbing rope is very different! unless your in the navy lol I don't see carrying or climbing a roap of that size. please correct me if I am wrong. still a great workout. when I was practicing for super body alone I would find tall thin trees of all sizes, and climb till they would start to sway to much. sometimes climbing one, transition, and down another if the situation was available.

    Great video. I feel good about the S-wrap but I find the rope burns my thigh on the descent, any tips to prevent that? I'm thinking the rope is too tight around my thigh or something. I can't seem to get the J-hook down for some reason.

    Ive heard it called the Spanish wrap . Dont know why or how it came to be called that . J hook is definitely quicker though , should be secure if done right , but S hook is more secure , especially on a windy day when the rope might be blowing around ?

    I have a different style that I've used since elementary school and I am always the fastest. Does Ranger School require you do it their way? Cause I am deadly accurate when I shoot my way but when I do it the army way I struggle and they always make me do it the Army way.

    I used to be the guy who climbed the rope without even needing my legs. Now I've been out of the service for 6 years and there's no way I'm ever climbing a rope in this shape lol.

    Always S! NEVER J!!!
    The added advantage of S is even if you loose your hand grip and tumble arse down the rope will twist and catch your lower leg!!!

    I was on an obstacle course at Fort Carson and the rope didn't reach the ground which made it harder to control. I used the S hook originally but then an officer I was with taught us the J hook.
    Having done them both the J hook seemed easier (I think I did it a slightly different way than you) but the S hook felt a lot safer.
    Not ready for the arms only bad ass method yet haha.

      Great video as always!
      S hook is slower but way safer and more efficient. The 'J hook' as you describe it has been influenced by Crossfit where rope climbs are for speed and normally not very high. Its fast but dangerous IMO. Great advice to not use it.
      The one benefit of kipping (another Crossfit influence) is on climbing rope with no feet. I used to be able to scramble up arms only no problem, now I need to kip my way up.

    can you recommend me a programme so i can achieve my APFT test on 100%.
    its 2 miles under 13;30 80 sit ups and 80 push ups in 2 mins and 18 pull ups.
    the difficulty comes with the fact that they are chained and you have almost no time to rest inbetween

    Light weight advantage, I’m like 160 I could pull myself up with just my arms in about 2.5 seconds
    Though I learned to climb a rope in elementary school, probably the way you’re going to show (haven’t watched yet)

    Now, why, THE FUCK, is this not a simple 20-30 block of instruction , in Basic Training. In 11B AIT, you are let loose on the Darby Queen, with no prior or post instruction, you are wrong, and why, is for us to know, and you to find out. Obstacles like the Weaver are explained, but the rope climb and confidence climb are like, go up, come down. Right fucking now!!!
