Love the new intro! The tapestry weaving together just feels so much more fitting for a show that is about a significant historical period that influenced the main series. History is being made in these episodes is the message you get. Plus is just looks a lot better than the cgi blood waterfall or whatever that was in S1 😂
What is brillliant about the show so far is that every variation from the book can be interpreted as a commentary on the subjectivity of history, especially in bigotted societies. The brutality of the scene describes in the book vs what occurs in the tv shows, the fact that Rhaenyra did not actually order a child to be murdered, that was history ultimately written to paint her as a villain.
To be fair, she doesn't order it in the book either - it's fully Daemon's initiative in "Fire & Blood". But I totally agree, this is what I find so interesting about the books (multiple maesters' accounts in there already) and the way the show adapts it (either picking one, or making its own version of what led to an event) - it makes you question what goes on behind closed doors.
Great breakdown! I thought the look of the show was a big improvement. I have the feeling the second season will be better than the first. They did a ton of changes from the first season. They brought back director Alan Taylor from the original Game Of Thrones as a producer and director. He directed the first episode. As well as Melissa Bernstein (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and Kevin De La Noy (Titanic, The Dark Knight ) as exclusive producers. So the first episode did feel a lot better than the first episode of season one.
I didn't read the book! So for me, the ending was SCARY AND DISTURBING AS FCK! Even, now knowing the difference doesn't change the effect. Why? The sound effects, the actress playing Helena, her clear warning at the beginning, etc. Even if I read the book, it wouldn't matter. Because I always try to consider a book vs a movie or TV show as an interpretation of the source materials. Nothing will ever be a reproduction of the book. They are two different mediums, done by different artists. So, they will never be a recreation of the original material.
It had its flaws but it was a beautiful first episode! And Emma D’arcy and Harry Collett!!!! Their interactions are beautiful and sent me into a cry fest! And although Emma doesn’t have children, the emotions were incredibly believable! It was beautiful to watch!
I agree, it was a great episode overall! It's really interesting to watch Emma's interviews and commentary for this show talking about motherhood and family - there's definitely a very deep understanding and emotional connection there.
I completely agree with you that the Blood and Cheese scene was unnecessarily sanitized, diminishing the overall dramatic impact. This is supposed to land in a similar fashion as the Red Wedding, but fails to do so. Please trust the book material going forward. Very disappointing.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a terrible event, but definitely a missed opportunity to make it an incredibly impactful scene for the viewers. Regardless, looking forward to the Greens losing their minds next episode!
I'm sure he owned up to it, plus Lord Borros and everyone at Storm's End saw the beginning of the interaction, then Aemond taking off after Luke... If Luke mysteriously went missing after that, Aemond would have still looked guilty. But that's exactly why I wish we got to see the interaction of Aemond getting home.
Hello, hi. Another book reader here. Disappointed how the blood and cheese went down. Yes the actors did amazing on that scene. Yes id have preferred the book version because the impact
I loved how contemplative this episode was. There was no explosion of action and rage but that simmering, uncomfortable feeling that everything is about to go wrong really fast as the pieces on the board start moving.
Yes, I was also devastated when I read the blood and cheese stuff. But only mildly uncomfortable when I saw it on screen... Even how they treated the dog was more hurtful
Thanks for all the context to the episode. I definitely agree with the change from the books being a major letdown that lessens the impact of the final scenes of the first episode.
Sometimes I imagine how great it would be married to Marianna everyday watching movies and TV shows having lively conversations over dinner at five star restaurants. Then "Return of House of Dragon" comes along and realize our wedded bliss would end in acrimony with me shouting "I'm not watching this crap" and I'd be taking the bus back to Palookaville. (sorry for getting weird).
@@ImpressionBlend yes, it’s like a bunch of cops writing reports from eye witness accounts. A now the security film comes out an people are siding with the cops anyway. (I believe in the maester conspiracy lol)
@ImpressionBlend I don't think there's a maester conspiracy, there's just conspiring maesters. Everyone has an agenda and bias, sometimes guys collide for specific plots to get rid of problems but there's no grand scheme. It's neat and tidy to say "this institution is a borg of singular plot" but it's just a bunch of guys. Targs just constantly become a political problem and Maesters are irrevocably tied with politics.
Queen Rhaenyra and Syrax both grieving their kids 😢😭 and the scene with Jacaerys broke my heart.
Both scenes made me tear up, so freaking sad
Welcome back Marianna really missed your thoughts, very insightful especially for non book readers.
Thank you! These are still my favorite videos to make

I think those were meant to be the bloodlines of Old Valyria?? It was a bit weird, for sure.
Your weekly episode recaps are the only ones I care about. Love how you explain the differences between the book and the show for us non-readers. 👍
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you're enjoying them

Somehow Jace got hot on his way to Winterfell
Really enjoyed this. Do you plan to review every episode?
Thank you! Yes, and I will probably go back and cover the rest of season 1 after that as well, since I only reviewed the series premiere.
Gosh, the last scene with the sound of the baby being beheaded...
Yeaaaaaa the sounds were awful

The tapestry intro was definitely an improvement over season one's intro.
So you WOULD like to see the tapestries then...

the "no good" hood
Aemond has one too, maybe he'll use it again?

Great review Marianna cant wait for the rest of the season i love your videos and your knowledge of the world is impressive
Great review! I'm enjoying S02 just as much as S01, but I'm a normie as I haven't read the books.
Thank you! Nothing wrong with just watching the show, glad you're enjoying it!

"Trust the book material"? Hahahaha. You sweet summer child.
Loved it but I dont get how anyone knew what Aemond had done. They were up in the storm clouds and no-one else was there to witness the incident??.

I think that's the general consensus with book readers, and I'm not sure why they thought they should tone it down THIS much...
I loved how contemplative this episode was. There was no explosion of action and rage but that simmering, uncomfortable feeling that everything is about to go wrong really fast as the pieces on the board start moving.
Building more tension before things get crazy

OK, seriously, the dog did NOT deserve that
God!¡!! You are good!!! Love your analysis🎉
Thank you!!
This is game of thrones series of fortunately unfortunate events 😂
A little bit )))

Delete this king
That's really fucking creepy dude
You're not sorry. Not really.
In the book it’s one of the dirty rat maesters retelling what happened. They’re liars.
the book has multiple different accounts "referenced", so it makes things interesting

maester conspiracy HAS to be real, it fits so well, I'm a big fan of that theory too
