You just know there were board room talks about "consumer confusion" and "negative synergy" when the game designers asked if they could include Age of Sigmar army ranges with The Old World. I guarantee that's the reason why you can't do Lizardmen or Skaven, they're in Age of Sigmar, you base the games differently, the new sculpts are designed without concern to fitting into tight units (not that they always seemed that concerned before), they're afraid Timmy will become confused and angered, so it's off the table.
Probably so they see what team sells more fantasy or AoS. Can't tell what games selling well if the cool cats playing fantasy are buying stormvermin and zombies you can't tell who's filling their coffers
@marbles5723 hadn't realised lizardmen had been given new toys.i'll miss those guys in TOW. Being a 5th ed recruit they were my first army. Movement 6 skirmishers could be quite effective
I have never played an official event in my life and don't intend to start. Don't let the company who manufactured your models tell you what to do with them
I'll be playing my Lizardmen whether mummy and daddy GW say I can. Most of the core rules we've seen are quite good! The thing I'm most worried about is that nobody has tried to abuse the "fighting rank" rule yet. For example it seems to me like skeleton archer units should be deployed 50 wide. Shoot 50 times in your turn, receive a charge and shoot 50 more shots in stand&shoot, and then get up to 50 melee attacks... I doubt it's practical to move around the board 50 wide but for defensive units like that it seems like there's no downside.
Lets hope that GW cracks down on too abusive stratagies. As a recently returned Warhammer player I was quite impressed how they took the broken release of 10th ed 40K and fixed the worst issues with "patches" in a month, and after 3 months almost made it ideal... atleast in a win% sort of way.
I agree, most of them are really good. However when it is released I do wonder how long it will before it is broken by the gameists. I have no problem with that- if its abusable, we need to know how to do it as quickly as possible. I will be trying to break it asap - precisely because I want it to be balanced.
As a Greek who loves Edinburgh after spending 16 years of my life there, I have to compliment you and your family's excellent taste in Christmas presents. Congratulations Doctor!
Have to say that I'm a little surprised (and miffed) that you were not the recipient of a free rulebook and box of plastic Sir! Just watched another channel (an excellent chap, pleased he got one) from someone with no "Old world" content that I'm aware of! Seems a little short sighted of GW as you are such a strong and thoughtful advocate for the game!
I expect I am a.) not big enough; b.) too outspoken. I am not even sure I would want to become a 'favoured son'. I want to be able to freely criticise, and it is easier to do that down here with the rabble.
@@DrBlaxill The same reason that Rob left GW after helping to set up Warhammer TV and went his own way with The Honest Wargamer - no sponsors, no accepting free product, no promoting tat you don't believe in and also very outspoken and not afraid to criticise GW
Spent hours over Christmas re-mesmerised by 3rd edition's "Armies" book - I had forgotten the unruly mix of proto-old world and whimsy-historical. The space left over for the players' imagination was enchanting.
The loss of the "whimsey" which is alluded to in other posts here is a loss to the fantasy element. As has been said the over decoration of the 🤢🤮 AOS stuff detracts from gaming and painting. This is why the wife prefers 5/6th edition. She likes the "fun" elements of Orcs and Gobbos, as well as the self executing Skaven (you're not a real skaven player unless you lose 25% plus if your forces to your own weaponry!) BTW....wasn't Slambo shown on one of the original Chaos Combat Cards?? I find myself agreeing with so much of what you are saying. You have secured a new sub!
I fully agree with the simpler miniatures thing - I'm not a great painter, but I can get decent results with simple models. The current direction of GW design, cramming ever-more detail onto a miniature, really puts me off from starting new models. I've had some of the new plastic sisters sitting on my desk for more than a year, becuse there's simply so much on them that I'm completely intimidated away from starting. Something like the TK skeletons, or the Fireforge Foot Knights, which are really short on detail but have a very clear design language, are much more my speed and I find myself enjoying these much more.
Yes. I think the best models to 'learn' on are simple space marines or old school chaos warriors. Skeletons are nice too, because with the right sort of technique applied after watching a video (or in the old days being shown) you can get a result that looks really good and that gives confidence.
Wheeling/ moving through your own units feels more of a total war thing, where troops move as a mob around other units and attack as reforming at the same time
Love the points on details. I’ve said since the beginning old models are wonderful especially if gw markets this game as entry point in terms of the hobby. Cheaper cause they are older, easier to paint for new hobbyists.
If you need a traced line of sight to shoot then, one is probebly not allowed to completly hide a unit behind an other unit and charge right through it. As the unit will cover sight(unless cavs count as hill)
@@stevenkennedy4130 I generally play the current edition and gimp myself by taking sub-optimal armies to tournaments. Armies that are all miniature (with a doomwheel or an old gyro copter as the biggest modes).
Great way to start the day full on belly laughing to your intro! Cheers man. Looking forward to getting to grips with the skirmish cavalry rules with my Ellyrian Reavers.
I don’t mind the exclusion of factions in Warhammer: The Old World if we hear later there’s going to be a Warhammer: The New World (and maybe a third one for Cathay, Nippon, Chaos Dwarfs and Kislev?)
When discussing the new models released by GW nowadays with my friends, I've always lamented the over-complexity of the new minis due to the fact that they sculpt in 3D now rather than with physical tools. I would prefer simpler models, allowing me to add my own details and cool paint job if I'm in the mood for it. As for the unsupported factions, I think it's a purely logistical issue. Supporting 16 factions with new models and rules updates is a nightmare, especially for a brand new game. What I believe is that GW is going to assess how well the game does and then release them in the future with a new edition that we'll eventually see, somewhat like Total War Warhammer.
There are some interesting points about CAD I think. A very informed poster in a previous video of mine put in a very good counter argument against my rather simplistic 'man vs machine' binary, but I nonetheless think there is an important point here.
well the 'new models' for the two release armies consist of one new model for each faction which may have been ready before they killed off WHFB so I'm not sure there will be too many new units at all
Quite right. Forces of Fantasy included the brilliant 'Book of Battalions' - sample armies that were just great fun. A whole army of giants, mixed halflings and gnomes, The Insane Necromancer Colin, orcs and hobgoblins with a third of the army being a squadron of wyvern riders led by Biggulz, all that sort of stuff. Vimto monks, proper Slann with the army seeming to be named after losing the cream of the milk to the bluetits that morning. It can be found online and is a lot of fun. Interesting to see that certain things that go all the way back to this along with what's been lost. I also recommend the 'Five Sample Armies' mail order leaflet that came with Ravening Hordes - all the characters and units get names and a little blurb which really give a flavour of what old Warhammer was like. Some absolute classic figures pictured and one of the armies is the Norse which are another of the big losses from way back when. Can also be found online with some careful searching.
Thank you for an excellent analysis Sir. As a High Elf player im naturally disappointed by the simplification of magic... My only hope, the thread I am holding on to, is that perhaps there is a plan for in Magic Expansion somewhere down the line. The certainly is room for it! Anyway, I'm off to go make my pre-order.
Started playing 2 years ago. Learned to paint and made a 4K point DE army. Preordered all the books to support TOW, because It was ok for me to get the PDF only. With this announcement they killed all the hype i was having. Amen.
I wouldn't be too concerned in your position. GW completely ballsed up the release of AoS, no points, free reinforcements, stupid legacy 'joke' rules about moustache twiddling etc but the community that took up the game, which didn't include me as I wanted a rank and file game, managed to turn the game into a playable and competitive game. I love fantasy it was the whole AoS thing left me cold but credit where it's due to players and tournament organisers in taking the mess GW had thrown out and said here is your new game that was mostly an unholy disasterthe community made it what it is today, and GW eventually started to understand enough of what players wanted the game to be to make it work for most players.
I've been collecting Dark Elves exclusively for over 20 years. I've supported GW and the DE line moreso during the years when GW hadn't. The current line is the 7th to 8th line. They got no updates in AoS for that team to territorialy piss on in the first place. It's an absolute travesty.
I believe since Age of Sigmar and The Old World are under GW but still made by separate sister companies that is why they are dividing factions and not supporting them in both. Age of Sigmar already has Ogres, Seraphon, Skaven, Daemons, Dark Elves, and etc so Old world can't use those factions and had to develop new factions and is forced to use old models and not the new UPDATED Age of Sigmar models. Sad but is what it is. Seems to make more sense to just develop Old World rule set and just allow models factions and models to be used in either game and just sell movement trays to slot round bases into.
This is the thesis coming out of the comments that I am becoming convinced by- the very point *is* that these exist in AOS and they want to keep the model lines separate. Its counterintuitive, but I am becoming more persuaded by this line of reasoning
The hard no on further support for renegade factions and lack of step up is really a sad day for me and my lizardmen. I have gone through getting ready to buy all of the rule books to have and study despite with only a lizardmen army to freezing all gw purchases until course has been corrected. I am still hopeful that gw will correct course about the renegades. I dont need printed books or new models to be happy just legal pdf factions that maybe get a balance check every year or so.
GMG doess a review (and essentially a page-by-page flipthrough) of the BBB (big blue book, new acronym needed) and both army books. I hope you can find the time to have a look, there is lots and lots of information to digest. The Old World lives!
Hah! I also received an M&S shortbread tin, but mine was the stag one with the huge antlers! The contents proved to be very tasty; but the tin will also prove useful, as I need somewhere to house various Imperial Skies stuff.
I like the old models better than the AoS or even the 8th ones. The old minis speak of meaning to me. They are like gateways to a deeper world of archetypes and stories. They take me on a journey that goes way beyond just the surface details. I don't wanna collect or even play with highly detailed mini-statues that speak of nothing.
I was really tempted to buy the Bretonnia box; my first ever GW miniatures were the Bretonnian half of the 5th edition starter box, but the price scared me off. I’ll be holding out hope they release a box for the Empire as that was my primary faction. I will say in regards to your point about more detail being a bad thing, I’m not looking forward to painting an empire soldier with a ton of tiny trinkets and doodads all over him when there’s 49 of his friends I also have to paint. I hope they release the old version of the state troops rather than the newer more detailed ones with chicken feet trinkets and tiny pistols all over them. Great video as always, looking forward to more of your content. Good luck to everyone in the herd trying to get their hands on the new releases.
Thanks. Personally I have not bothered for some years to 'keep up'. I just paint old models, although do want to open myself to the very occasional new thing that catches my eye. If it is a hero I can live with the detail- but then there's the anatomy and scale disconnect which also bothers me.
Would love to come and play 3rd edition,Just need to wait until flights from New Zealand to the Uk come down a tad. Unfortunately, i was in the toilet when the pre orders went live and they were all sold out when i got out lol
I think they've done this due to the fact that the listed factions here have lost their actual flavor in AOS. The more Tolkien/Historical theme of the Border Princes, Empire, Brettonia and High Elves just sint in AOS its so much more cartoonish/Steam punkish. Lizardmen and Skaven I think have been dield up to a more high-fantasy in AOS and so these armies (my beloved Knights in particular) were left in the bin until now. Interesting to see where they'll take it. I know im my local scene its getting a lot of hype and pre-ordering. My Dogs of War who have served many a contractor across 5 separate rank and flank game systems that are simply eager to meet new and returning players to a truly wonderful setting of the Old World. I've heard Old World and HH being described as the place GW wants to stuff and satisfy their Grognards. As someone who enjoys playing 5th ED 40k and Old World Fantasy both for rules and setting I will honestly accept this.
That stags shortbread is the gift that will keep on giving all January 😂 I’ve just started my listen, but I want to say I’m hoping for a Dogs of War release at some point. I’d be all over Bronzinos Galloper Guns and the Marksmen of Miragliano.
Doubt you'll get those particular Dogs of war as the timeline is hundreds of years before they existed. Maybe you'll get the first prototype merc units instead..if any.
I finished my History degree at King's just over a year ago. I wish you were a lecturer there and that I had you, would've been the highlight of my degree.
Lol thanks. I know KCL very well, did my doctorate there. They've had many a chance to hire me over the years as it happens- so if you're listening KCL...🤪
@@DrBlaxill No problem at all haha. They absolutely should! Would probably convince me to do a masters. 😂 By the way, in your video you said you’ll be organising tournaments for the Old World, are these open to anyone and if so how do I sign up? Would love to come along.
Bit late to the party, but as someone who planned to play Daemons in Warhammer Fantasy revengeance (AKA The Old World)... I am let down by all of this. My hopeful self wants to believe that the other factions will be releasing later so that GW won't be biting off more than they could chew with this new release. But, the rest of my brain knows far too well that GW repeatedly does not think that way. But it's a case where I would be happy to be proven wrong. Also, shout out to the venerable Slambo! A prize for any miniature collection to be sure
I feel like they have never really figured out the balance, either heroes are over powered or under powered. Either they can sit in front of a unit and kill models and never risk getting killed or you just poor some foot troop attacks in and wipe them out.
There are others- even in M&S without going elsewhere. The stag is on all of them. I have no idea what this stag has to do with biscuits. It doesn't eat them, and it is not listed on the ingredients list.
Thank you for the video! I agree with you that my thoughts early was the same when it comes to the legacy factions. Reading through previous articles I felt it was clear that these were not going to be supported in the interim and they would not be legal in GW tournaments. I think that these factions will be allow in regular tournaments however the downside is that I feel TOs will need to comp many of them if they are to unbalanced and make it more work then it may be worth.
I actually think that anyone who wants to play in GW tournies (and have legacy armies) should just write up a list and send it in. Just do that on mass and cause a lot of noise. They'll change their minds. Fantasy players have been looked at as overly dramatic. It's not true, we just want to play WH... and we paid literally thousands of dollars to do it, along with countless hours of hobbying. Being told "ah nah, you can't though" is the stupid side of the argument, not those complaining that killing off rank and flank game and replacing it with a skirmish game, or not being allowed to put your models on the table when there's rules for them, but "oh it's illegal". Write lists, turn up, play anyway. Let's play warhammer.
GW tournaments are a scam anyway, the two that I have been to back in fantasy days specifically stated no heavily customised models, one tournament had a player with Ogres designed to be circus related, the Tyrant was a ringmaster balanced on a gigantic ball. He won the tournament. But then again, both tournaments had all 3 podium positions being GW employees. If you are playing fo fun, who gives a crap about GWs illegal armies... there wil be rules for my Ogres, so i'll still play my Ogres.
I have so much love for this. So much to unpick here but the the thing that sticks for me is always the minis. Agree 100% they are gaming pieces, not mantlepiece ornaments. Accessibility ain't want it used to be for the hobby side. On the topic of those shortbread biscuit tins, when you are done with scoffing the contents they are perfect for fitting magnetised minis in and they stock perfectly into the Feldherr cases. I'm always on the look out for them!
New player here : it seems normal that armies you are not able to purchase from Games Workshop are not considered legal in tournaments. Otherwise it would be impossible to get into the game with a legacy faction (without spending a fortune and buying online which I loathe). My two favorites lore-wise are Vampire Counts and Bretonnia, so I guess I'll be playing Bretonnia.
depends if you want to play for fun, or play for tournament... as a new player you will likely want to play for fun, so play which ever army you want, if there are no rules for it... simply design your own army rules
I'd expect most indi tournaments will include at least some, if not all the pdf legacy factions, if you only want to play at Warhammer World then you need to play by GW rules plus make sure none of your models are 3rd party, resin printed, on a non GW resin base, etc. Many models for the supported armies are currently not available from GW but hopefully that changes soon.
Love your videos! Hope to see many more in the months to come. Enough adulation and on to the business. Yesterday when I saw the statement regarding legacy factions I was in a really bad mood, but today my outlook is much more positive. As you say ToW is a more boutique game - hopefully the core rules give us mechanics that lead to an interesting gameplay. After that it is part of the community/ us players to make the best of it. Their scope for the time being is limited... It is not a core game for GW. However they said in one of the almanacs that they don't necessarily continue chronologically later on... They might jump to the vampire wars in a few years or past the siege of Praag and introduce one or two factions (I guess this would tie in with a reimagining of said faction for AoS). We won't get that many new units in that time even for the core factions that this hopefully won't put the legacy ones too much at a disadvantage. In short I don't think this matters too much and them being frank regarding the more immediate future of the game is better than setting false hopes. We get rules for the legacy factions for free and mostly can buy the models in the AoS range... The amount of official GW tournaments will be limited so I don't think this really should affect us too much and I doubt this would be an issue in any local store event. This statement now hurts a bit more but if they should for whatever reason give us more in the future regarding the lagacy factions they'll be in a much better position compared to being measured against broken promises.
Yes. The fundamentals are the same. However- they need to release the PDF Legacy lists ASAP and ideally at launch, and they need to be good! And find a different formulation than 'not legal' and 'legal' for their hierarchy. I agree with your broad point however.
@@DrBlaxill It seems that at least the release of the PDFs will be soon as they guys from Mountain Miniatures already have them (but aren't allowed to give details). And their conclusion was that these armies might be even the most popular ones since they only miss the Arcane Journals part that is more thematic / lore focused anyhow and getting minis is easier actually. And releasing the rules that you can get for free before the ones you have to spent money for would be weird - a few days after the 20th seems likely imho.
So I double checked the combat almanack, it specifically states “Casualties are removed from the back ranks, representing the rear ranks stepping forward as their comrades bite the dirt. “ sounds like step up still exists
No, that verbiage was always used in even the pre-step up times. It's next surrounding paragraphs of rules text that matter not that sentence. We know with 100% certainty that step up is gone.
yes- the porno punch that punches up and down simultaneously ! This might be my second special move - the Porno Punch - to complement the Punko Crusher.
I feel insulted about this lauch. I am an Empire player, but the fact they have done this to the "legacy" factions feels very bad. I litteraly feel used as a consumer and not cared about at all. Thanks for the video. I'm a great fan.
lol my mom bought the same shortbread here in Scotland JUST because she liked the box illustration xD (we are Italians btw). Also if you want to pronounce Lucrezia Belladonna more accurately... try: Lookreh-tsiah (emphasis on the "a, not the "i").
Excellent 👌 Lookreh-tsiah! Shortbread is one of Britain's superior gastronomic exports (to be honest there are not so many) so your mother might well enjoy the contents as well as the illustration.
This is what gets me; there is five "good" playable factions but only four "bad" playable factions. Could GW not even out the factions so that its five and five, they could have easily added Vampire Counts, Chaos Dwarfs, Dark Elves, or the Skaven? Gameplay isn't much of a good excuse because each one of these armies plays very different from each other, and differently from the other "playable" armies. They just didn't care. After all it wasn't us who advanced the story of Warhammer fantasy, wrote the end times, and then created AOS. It was GW who did that.
Skaven, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Vampire Counts etc tournament illegal and not fully supported in the immediate future ? these armies are fundamental to the WHFB armies. I bought some AoS Vampire counts, skellies for a Death Rattle army and zombies to compliment the Vampire Counts and I wish I hadn't now.
You didn't actually order from goldfishblue did you? (I may have also committed this sin for middlehammer Dark Elf Dark Rider crossbows, but it was a GOOD DEAL, kinda....)
PDF's are all available at launch. In fact Steve at MWG let slip that they already had the PDF's. And he said they are done very well. I think this statement was awful though.
Never a fan of step up as it makes initiative almost pointless in most situations. But in my version of the game (the one I play the most) , we have step up for front rank only (not the second rank) so one still can reduce attacks back at you if have higher initiative. We also have +1 Initiative for a charge (+2/3 for flank/rear charge , and -1 for an uphill charge). 😎
Well indeed- if you can play a hosueruled version all is good. I wish people would do this sort of thing more- interesting idea of one rank only step up
I would agree with other comments follow your passion. Should that align with my love for mankind’s struggle in the Old World great. If not I know your content will still be great to watch. In the early days though, some starter list, basics of the game, and tutorials would be awesome. I always wanted to get into fantasy as a teen, but didn’t have the financial means at the time. Now as an adult I’m all in.
It is unbelievable that GW would walk away from Skaven - even for a niche game. I do suspect this "legal and illegal" nonsense is just GW "putting its toe in the bath water," and illegal armies will slowly be "reformed" at a rate directly proportional to the sales of Oldworld books.
Very nice review, once again; it´s contagious congratulations. For me, the problem with the legacy factions is their lists are gonna be left behind at some point. The looks of the miniatures lay in grounds of opinion and I know I am minority. I like them Cartoonish !!
@@JaidenMaxwell-kh4be Waiting for the POSTMAN! I still haven't had the books due to the supply issues- lol! However, I am going to be playing this weekend, and then I will be able to speak from some experience rather than just from theory. I'll say something soon after that ;-)
I play Lizardmen (and High Elves), but I'm OK with the PDF armies being illegal for competitive tournaments. You can't run competitive games where some people can't get access to the entire selection of possible armies. People complain (it has already happen in 40K and Fantasy), that they can't buy a unit or army anymore and that gives them a unfair disadvantage. I think most tournaments will make accommodations, I can't imagine anyone saying they don't want to play against PDF armies because they are not involved in the current narrative.
Good vid. The magic system does seem very dull from those first battle reports, and heros and heavy cav potentially a bit overpowered. 4th/5th ed are often misunderstood as 'herohammer' - that was true of special characters perhaps, but otherwise it was mainly the arms race of stacking loads of high point magic items on characters that made them so definitive - a simple house rule of restricting number/points of items per character balanced it out easily (not that it was something my teenage contemporaries at the time actually did of course). It seems like this edition that characters and monsters are inherently going to be much stronger than everything else, which will be quite dull also if true, and harder to fix - but in line with GWs 'lets sell lots of big statues' approach to models of recent years. My other big worry is that as with 9th age and other late editions (as I understand it), half the game will be trying to remember all the special rules for each of your units, and how they interact with your opponents - and games often decided by a pure test of memory
"I don't like -some- change." Dr Luke Blaxill, January 2024. Would definitely be interested to hear your thoughts on all this after you've had a couple of games!
The thing preventing too much of herohammer seems to be that the amount of heroes is very, very limited. One duke. One paladin per 1k. One prophetess per 1k. And I don't think Prophetesses will really be that powerful with magic as it seems to be in this edition.
@@skeith1543 My bad. Still, beyond the Dukes/Barons, heroes don't seem to be over-powered. Listening to a review of Bretonnia by Steve at MWG/Mountain Miniatures, and I really don't think this will be an exttreme herohammer edition. Magic is definitely toned down.
GW 2019- you can use your old armies Gw 2023- there are 8 factions the rest of them are legacy armies. GW- 2024 Here's your pdf for the legacy armies. Now sod off and don't bother us anymore. I'm tired of being lied to. I'm tired of having the goal posts moved. My enthusiasm is a 10th of what it was. I'm going to buy Tomb Kings box, but there are reasons why I have a Dark Elf army Ps 90% of the Dark elf range is still available. Its just sad.
Have to say I did sorta liked magic when they anounced it, now I have been convinced by these arguments. Including the stepup although I think is the least of my preocupations. Is just that I really don't like high lethality in games but yeah no being able to return much feels boring for that player. On the other hand I enjoyed the Miniwargaming report like I haden't enjoy fantasy in a while. I'm confident the comunity will patch what it's missing, nowdays is not like the days of six ed where we were alone in small clumps unable to comunicate, todays comunity can patch thing much better :D
'Step Up' I honestly never liked. It encouraged Death Star playstyles. Glad to see it gone. Overall I think the game looks really solid. My only big problem is the missing races.
Step Up + 2H weapons + Large Units. This set up made small elite units get murdered. Even well armored high WS high Imitative .... you just fall to the volume of remaining attacks from the mob of cheaper HW guys.
Absolutely devastated and my enthusiasm is about 10% and I might cancel my preorder. Only ever played vampire counts and just don't fancy any of the other 9 so...
Right. You are a lifer for one faction- and there is nothing wrong with that. I have known people get tattoos of 'their' faction. It's not just for 'old times sake' (lol)- it strikes to the heart! Well sir, your VC will be welcome in my tournaments whatever they say.
@@DrBlaxill thank you kind sir I shall try get down to London for your next one it's just harder for me with childcare and things just now! Hope you do another 8th ed one in future!
Hi, in parts good analysis. But not thw whole world is playing competitively and TOW is probably another GW system not meant for tournament play. Well each to it's own though. However Question : which MWG Game are you referring to ? I have seen only one between Mat and Steve ( narrative szenario play ) but seem to have missed out the one with Luca you are referring to, no ? Best regards and keep up the good work. Oh and btw. congrats to your 2. place in Canada..hehe
29:00 Herohammer? Oh no. I get PTSD flashbacks from 5th edition. Now, I played Chaos so I could field some over the top heroes. But every game. EVERY GAME. I met a low cost champion on a quick mount with Black Gem of Gnar. Well there was one game where I didnt. But then a similar champ had the item that exploded when he died. So it turned out the same. But still .I vastly prefered when 6th edition rolled around and actual units mattered more
Look on the bright side, you're rich in Limited Edition Stack Shortbread Collection from Marks & Spencers. It's baked in Edinburgh you know, it's the kind of gift that makes one feel deeply and personally moved to receive. 😄 I couldn't agree more about the whole “Good” and “Evil” labelling GW is pushing. It removes the grey areas which makes factions and faction relationships interesting and complex. An ogre would just as happily be paid to fight along side an Empire soldier as he would just as happily eat him. Good? Evil? Or opportunistic?
I wonder who is meant to be doing the moral judgement? A sort of transnational old world secular department of classification producing proto international law? A representative committee of 21st century Western, persons weighted by social, cultural, and political attitudes? I rather think it's one they should park and let us make up our own mind...
So. I'll be honest, the lack of Step up is fatal for tomb kings and presumably the Vampires. There were at least 3 combats in which luca basically just watched Steve kill the front row and then took crumble models off. I hated it the moment I saw it, and I fear it's gonna under power factions with low initiative. I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm seeing things here and there I don't like. Killing Blow seems to be gone on the tomb guard, poisons become wonky, hero hammer is certainly in, and monsters Don't appear any tougher then they used to be, unless ridden by a character. I found the war machine having to roll to hit partial covered models good. Im still waiting to see if we have laser accurate cannons though. I highly approve of the initiative increase for charging, and the adjustment to Strikes Last. That's good. I feel like Brettonia got an incredible power boost. That First Charge Rule is pretty dangerous. Cavalry certainly looks to be on top in The Old World, but I feel like they dunked on infantry too much. We'll need to see how things go.
@@DrBlaxill it gets worse! when you have a weapon with extra ranks, like spears, Losing the front row stops all of them from attacking too. the second battle report from Mountain Miniatures showed a unit of men at Arm's Halberds get charged by skeleton cavalry and lose 4 front rank models. their support rank also lost their attack.
I don't think models with less details are better for newbies. I think models with more details are like a coloring book. You just need to color the details to make the miniature look good. But old models with less details have more plain areas to paint. And this is tricky to make it look good, like a canvas, you need to add details yourself. You can see that comparison like a sculpted banner and a plain banner. Good luck with the freehand.
True, but also: I have in this moment 2 primed and ready models in front of me, a daemonette from the latest underwolds box set, details galore, tiny, all over the thing; and a vintage daemonette with claws as huge as their torso and a nice chainmail shirt. I cant wait to paint the latter one, i have been dreading the first one for a month now.
That's a good counter point. I would say that the complex models require more patience, although more of the detail is dictated to you- I like the 'colouring book' analogy. However I would say with simpler sculpts you can choose to freehand, but don't have to- thus making them great for newbs and experienced. There are also nice opportunities to learn basic shading with say, an old school space marine.
Hopefully we'll end up being wrong about the playable races, if ToW has any measurable success, they might just end up dedicating further resources to it, writing army books and similar. Secondly, as it turns out, around 1 hour after the pre-orders opened over here in Italy this morning - basically everything sold out, GW's own webstores are completely out of stock. This leads me to believe that perhaps they underestimated the interested in a return to Warhammer Fantasy.
Looking at reports from Element Games, Wayland and other indi stores it seems GW has once again totally failed to understand the demand for a product. Element have nothing to sell apart from in those that can visit the store and it seems many others are in the same position and only able to order for delivery some time in the future. So much for Warhammer fantasy being an unpopular game
On the topic of illegal armies. I gladly put my neck to retributive wrath of honorable community in dramatic stance of an attempt to defend SGS and maybe plant a seed of doubt and understanding. I think they had to stress that. As much as they are aware anyone can organize a tournament that houserules out their decree of banishment in practice, the Word of Law, however circumvented still stands and still has an effect. What effect, you may asketh? For one there is business side of things. SGS has limited budget. They can not release 150+ new or reheated kits at once. This is inviable from warehousing and logistical perspectice at the minimum also, releasing 15 armies on day 1 would not get them 7.5x more sales. Some people would love whatever elves or chaos dwarves but in absence of those, they may settle for bretonnia or wait half a year in hopes of getting mpire instead and wait another 5 years for their army of prefference. There must be I am convinced, considerable effect of substitution here. 9 armies released in reasonable intervals is still a lot I would say. People can choose from those and play. If they embraced all armies that ever were and hopes of getting GW minis from lets say chaos dwarves within next 7 years were slim, people would turn their eyes upon recasts, AOS imports, 3dprints and ebay. That, even if in reality SGS does strongly take into consideration some of those armies in 5-10 year timeline would simply mean sawing off of the branch they sit on. So it must have been said. And for me, all the better. I am sure only true and beautiful people will always take away spoon from their child's mouth and scavenge ebay for old gold rather than save money by bringing 3d printed chaos dwarves to the table. If GW did not make this least of efforts in shape akin to papal bull, that would get us all kind hearted folks into peril of beholding all kinds of ugly armies brought by people who, yes, had some idea, some nostalgia to the army they got infatuated with briefly some time in the past, but hold no moral spine and their love is not pure enough to bear all the costs neccessary for true fulfillment and not pursuing imitation. Let them have instead the 6th ed bretonnians or 7th ed or whatever it was empire? Maybe, if they (the souls impure) get that 7th or 8th ed plastics re-released, we manage to get hold of them and entice them to actually walk the hard path and make their second project the hard way? This is the oportunity we have been given by this little decree. And I am supportive of it. *tense guilotine rope creaks in anticipation* Apologies for long, messy writing and poor grammar but mobile device box so bad for editing of mistakes. I hope i made sense.
Tomb Kings baddies as imperialists and yet Brets goodies as feudal overlords living in opulence while their poxxed under equipped peasants work the fields and get used as cannon fodder against legions of the enemy seems bizarre.
I suspect it's more about one department not wanting to lose sales to another
To be fair, old Warhammer Fantasy models often struggled to fit into tight formations anyway 😅
Good point. That, or as Val mentions, interdepartmental competition. One way or another- a corporate argument
If legacy armies are illegal I guess that makes me a criminal baby 😎
thats the spirit 😂
Outlaw life
I have never played an official event in my life and don't intend to start. Don't let the company who manufactured your models tell you what to do with them
I sold all my DEs during lockdown…………….bugger………..
@DrBlaxill exactly. In order to test rules you have to take them to the limit!
As a Greek who loves Edinburgh after spending 16 years of my life there, I have to compliment you and your family's excellent taste in Christmas presents.
Congratulations Doctor!
Yes. Do stags live in Edinburgh?
@@DrBlaxill Sadly not anymore. But there is a Marks and Spencer's!
@@DrBlaxill You can see Stags and Hens there every weekend, not quite as many per square meter as you find in Queenstown tho
Yes, I didn't try to beat the queues this morning. I read Lost and the Damned.
The loss of the "whimsey" which is alluded to in other posts here is a loss to the fantasy element. As has been said the over decoration of the 🤢🤮 AOS stuff detracts from gaming and painting. This is why the wife prefers 5/6th edition. She likes the "fun" elements of Orcs and Gobbos, as well as the self executing Skaven (you're not a real skaven player unless you lose 25% plus if your forces to your own weaponry!)
BTW....wasn't Slambo shown on one of the original Chaos Combat Cards??
As a GSC player this is painfully relatable
Yes. I think the best models to 'learn' on are simple space marines or old school chaos warriors. Skeletons are nice too, because with the right sort of technique applied after watching a video (or in the old days being shown) you can get a result that looks really good and that gives confidence.
So glad I found your YT channel! I'm going through your videos. :)
I prefer Oldhammer style miniatures myself.
Saytr Art Studio does great fantasy figures.
9th Edition Warhammer,, cool man! Now all we need is some power metal. I'm head banging to some Unleash the Archers in this current age!!
Yes- POWER METAL. The real music of Warhammer!
If you need a traced line of sight to shoot then, one is probebly not allowed to completly hide a unit behind an other unit and charge right through it. As the unit will cover sight(unless cavs count as hill)
Fuck i hate the "center piece" idea. I want a miniatures game not a game with a few knee high monsters.
I play 6th edition
@@stevenkennedy4130 I generally play the current edition and gimp myself by taking sub-optimal armies to tournaments. Armies that are all miniature (with a doomwheel or an old gyro copter as the biggest modes).
Great way to start the day full on belly laughing to your intro! Cheers man. Looking forward to getting to grips with the skirmish cavalry rules with my Ellyrian Reavers.
Damn what an asshole move made by GW. Have a Dark Elf army of about 10k points by now im very disapointed.
I don’t mind the exclusion of factions in Warhammer: The Old World if we hear later there’s going to be a Warhammer: The New World (and maybe a third one for Cathay, Nippon, Chaos Dwarfs and Kislev?)
Don´t know what to think about the removal of "step up". Guess we will have to see how it plays out.
A very informed poster in a previous video of mine put in a very good counter argument against my rather simplistic 'man vs machine' binary, but I nonetheless think there is an important point here.
well the 'new models' for the two release armies consist of one new model for each faction which may have been ready before they killed off WHFB so I'm not sure there will be too many new units at all
Forces of Fantasy was the 1st edition army lists, ravening hordes was the 2nd edition lists.
Merry Christmas Dr Luke! Always love these videos
Spot on analysis of “legacy” armies, I roll my eyes every time I read that term : legacy factions.
Instructive as always, great video with fierce analysis, love it ❤
The hard no on further support for renegade factions and lack of step up is really a sad day for me and my lizardmen.
Thanks for the heads up and I certainly will look. However, I think my next comment will come after I've seen the rules myself in the flesh.
Hah! I also received an M&S shortbread tin, but mine was the stag one with the huge antlers! The contents proved to be very tasty; but the tin will also prove useful, as I need somewhere to house various Imperial Skies stuff.
Yes, the stag tin is just the gift that keeps on giving!
I would like to recommend Victrix miniatures too! They’ve got a 12/13C range in the works.
Hey Mate do you know what time the new stuff usually goes on sale at GW? (UK time).
I think it is 10am on a Saturday usually?
Those metal shortbread containers can store magnetized minis
These stag biscuit tins are basically of infinite use. You are quite correct!
As an old school Beastman player, being part of the Herd is a rather nice compliment, thank you very much! 🦬
Whatever you do, DO NOT regift that shortbread to a Dawi!
Would love to come and play 3rd edition,Just need to wait until flights from New Zealand to the Uk come down a tad.
Unfortunately, i was in the toilet when the pre orders went live and they were all sold out when i got out lol
So I actually did end up putting in a pre-order for the Bretonians and all the books…
I haven't been called a punk in over 35 years. And quite frankly I find it most refreshing!
You deserve more subs. Excellent analysis.
That stags shortbread is the gift that will keep on giving all January 😂
I’ve just started my listen, but I want to say I’m hoping for a Dogs of War release at some point. I’d be all over Bronzinos Galloper Guns and the Marksmen of Miragliano.
Doubt you'll get those particular Dogs of war as the timeline is hundreds of years before they existed.
Maybe you'll get the first prototype merc units instead..if any.
Man, the boxes were light. I've already eaten most of them- they taste too good!

This is an expressions of interest waiting list 🙂
Bit late to the party, but as someone who planned to play Daemons in Warhammer Fantasy revengeance (AKA The Old World)... I am let down by all of this. My hopeful self wants to believe that the other factions will be releasing later so that GW won't be biting off more than they could chew with this new release. But, the rest of my brain knows far too well that GW repeatedly does not think that way. But it's a case where I would be happy to be proven wrong.
Also, shout out to the venerable Slambo! A prize for any miniature collection to be sure
lol my mom bought the same shortbread here in Scotland JUST because she liked the box illustration xD (we are Italians btw)
I feel like they have never really figured out the balance, either heroes are over powered or under powered. Either they can sit in front of a unit and kill models and never risk getting killed or you just poor some foot troop attacks in and wipe them out.
Here for analysis?
I'm sticking around for more limited edition shortbread tin reveals! 😍
Rip i've always only been a Dark Elf player and any second army i would have taken are all in the unsupported factions :(
No step up punishes low int army's. Having Step up punishes low toughness armies.
The shortbread had me laughin - and also craving shortbread..
it's SO good
I actually think that anyone who wants to play in GW tournies (and have legacy armies) should just write up a list and send it in.
Yes- write the lists, and play! The dictat from on high is not going to put us off, and eventually, people power will speak.
@@eskhaphey2873 Well they have been playing the game for a year- they are at rather an advantage...
My great eagle is not ill!
Agree wholeheartedly on detail and modern minis, the over sculpted new minis lack soul.
Most of the legacy factions make sense due to geography. The surprise is VC and Skaven being excluded from the core factions list.
"Take off the gloves and porno punches" helluva lead in. Let's roll!
yes- the porno punch that punches up and down simultaneously ! This might be my second special move - the Porno Punch - to complement the Punko Crusher.
Your right on. Keep the great insight coming.
The Monster mount power-up is here Oh Master of the Universe ! with 2D magic it looks like AOS except squared based.
There has been some confusion about this in various announcements. Let's hope Steve is right.
@@DrBlaxill Steve did happen to mention in the rules book review that he played a game with slann, so it appears it's ready.
First time seeing your videos. You got a sub out of me for that goldfishblue dig. 😂
Luke we have had releases of the big rulebook, legacy armies and core armies. Where are you? We need the analysis.
Punk.
@@JaidenMaxwell-kh4be Waiting for the POSTMAN! I still haven't had the books due to the supply issues- lol!
However, I am going to be playing this weekend, and then I will be able to speak from some experience rather than just from theory. I'll say something soon after that ;-)
👍
I play Lizardmen (and High Elves), but I'm OK with the PDF armies being illegal for competitive tournaments. You can't run competitive games where some people can't get access to the entire selection of possible armies. People complain (it has already happen in 40K and Fantasy), that they can't buy a unit or army anymore and that gives them a unfair disadvantage. I think most tournaments will make accommodations, I can't imagine anyone saying they don't want to play against PDF armies because they are not involved in the current narrative.
bruh, the goldfishblue reference
You won't have long to wait!
The thing preventing too much of herohammer seems to be that the amount of heroes is very, very limited. One duke. One paladin per 1k. One prophetess per 1k. And I don't think Prophetesses will really be that powerful with magic as it seems to be in this edition.
Also, on the MWG game, we have to allow for it being their first game. I'm sure they made multiple mistakes.
You are limited to one Duke per army, 1 baron or prophetess per 1k and however many Paladins, damsels and sergeants you like.
GW 2019- you can use your old armies
Gw 2023- there are 8 factions the rest of them are legacy armies.
GW- 2024 Here's your pdf for the legacy armies. Now sod off and don't bother us anymore.
I'm tired of being lied to. I'm tired of having the goal posts moved.
My enthusiasm is a 10th of what it was.
I'm going to buy Tomb Kings box, but there are reasons why I have a Dark Elf army
Ps 90% of the Dark elf range is still available. Its just sad.
Don't just disregard what I'm about to say, but try Mantic's Kings of War. It's a great game, model agnostic, and has a great company making it.
If you are tired of being lied to then why give them more $$?
Just play them anyway dude, who cares if it’s illegal, what are they gonna do arrest you lol
Its more about ongoing support then being legal or not.
This has become my favorite channel. “ALRIGHT PUNKS” 😂
Skirmishers were handled that way in 6th. It never caused a problem.
Oh and btw. congrats to your 2. place in Canada..hehe
it's that batrep video, Luka is playing not Matt
There is another today in which the kings win or something
@@skeith1543 thanks. Will check.

Herohammer?
But still .I vastly prefered when 6th edition rolled around and actual units mattered more
Heart of Woe!
Interesting how the name of a single magic item can be conjured up from the past, some 20 years later
Von dem gefasel verstehe ich zwar nicht viel aber man merkt die genervte Stimmung.
Look on the bright side, you're rich in Limited Edition Stack Shortbread Collection from Marks & Spencers. It's baked in Edinburgh you know, it's the kind of gift that makes one feel deeply and personally moved to receive. 😄
I couldn't agree more about the whole “Good” and “Evil” labelling GW is pushing.
It would be nice to see the TK stop one of those charges- it all looks pretty stacked in one side's favour so far!
@@DrBlaxill it gets worse! when you have a weapon with extra ranks, like spears, Losing the front row stops all of them from attacking too.
the second battle report from Mountain Miniatures showed a unit of men at Arm's Halberds get charged by skeleton cavalry and lose 4 front rank models. their support rank also lost their attack.
dark elf and skaven armies are ready to come out and...........oh, wait................................well....oh.
There are also nice opportunities to learn basic shading with say, an old school space marine.
on a basic level, pretty much all the principles of good design are to cut away unnecessary detail.
I would argue its already "succesful".
It's sold out everywhere and has generated massive hype in the community.
Judging by Heresy legacies it's gonna be like pulling teeth to get PDFs fixed
*tense guilotine rope creaks in anticipation*
Apologies for long, messy writing and poor grammar but mobile device box so bad for editing of mistakes. I hope i made sense.
Great video
Tomb Kings baddies as imperialists and yet Brets goodies as feudal overlords living in opulence while their poxxed under equipped peasants work the fields and get used as cannon fodder against legions of the enemy seems bizarre.
The far-left narrative never makes any sense no matter what they copy/paste it onto.
Going with orc's and goblins first. Yet chorfs, VC, Dark E, and skaven are all cool. Wood elves and bretonnian are also cool im not totally evil
