Image-Line recently released 2 FREE guitar FLEX packs that sound VERY realistic. You can even hear strings snapping back and "fret fingers" lol. I hope that holds you over!

@@HazyJ28 Yeah I found out today. That was a punch in the gut. Here I am try-harding, diving deep into to the resonance behaviour and whatnot, getting fairly close to the real thing...
And today I think, lets mess with FLEX (which got recommended to me recently), hmm guitar essential pack....
Ok, with one push of a button.... BOOM outperformed by a long shot 😢
But I guess it's worth analysing the preset to learn (though I think a lot happens behind the screen there).

A tip from an orchestral composer; Let mod wheel control dynamics
    Instead of playing with attack,
control volume, filters, etc. with a mod wheel.
In addition, make a macro control entire volume (expression), another one control vibrato. Then, link them to your faders.
The more controllable, the more flexible and FUN😆
Kinda randomness and details make it blend with real orchestral samples.
PS Love your basic synth design series.
So comprehensive and brief that I can use these techniques in other synths immediately.
    Thank you for the videos!

With tutorials like this, I'm glad you can make those kinds of sounds with a free VST. Because it's free, I don't have to worry about looking for free orchestral libraries, nor do I have to worry about space like you said. I bet you can show us how to recreate other orchestral instruments with this program like solo strings, woodwinds, or maybe even a timpani if possible. In fact, I'd love to see you do some Sakura tutorials because that plugin doesn't get enough attention. Either way, good luck on your content and thank you for this tutorial. (5-2-2021)

    Nice tips !
    Here is one from me:
Load in a quite bad sampled library of a string ensemble you have, and use it as the modulator in a vocoder, to modulate your synth you've just created. If you have good vocoder, you can play simple chords (major or minor) in the key of the song you are doing over 2 octaves (program midi to help you play more notes than you have fingers) in the range where you want to use your synth, and freeze that frequency response. From here on out the vocoder is static (you could discard the sampler), but you've just applied an overall filter to the output of your synth to shape the overall tonal caracteristic of your synth. You retain control over attack, decay, LFOs, and all the other work you've done to give your synth a string sound. This is nice especially if the sampled library you have is not usuable as an instrument but still provides you with the overall sound of the instrument you are trying to emulate.
You can also do the same for woodwinds and everything else.

There\s kind of trick to dynamically switch between long attack and release and short punchy attack for staccato-like sound, I guess: I route Env1 attack and realease and Env2 sust to velocity, so with hard hitting i got punchy sound, and soft touch gives me a long rising sound.

Great tutorial as always Michael!! P.S. I know it's probably not in your style.. but it would be interesting to see your aproach on sound design techniques about those trendy slap basses. In fact some brazillian bass tracks or slap house feels very spacious in low end and gets quite complex with so much effects on vocal phrases etc., but hmm.. mono compatibility also matters. 🧐😁

I wanna say, as a composer I checked this out and it to be honest, it's not really a good replacement for strings, I'd rather use Labs. BUT: the lows sound really good. Dark, omnious and also powerful. You can also reshape it a little to create an awesome sounding pad. I don't check out sound design video's very often, but this was really interesting, thanks Michael!
