  • Have you ever needed a tool chest but find out they are extremely expensive!? In this video we explore budget friendly options. I found some really cheap filing cabinets at a thrift store and thought I would give it a go. All I needed was some rolling casters, a cheap Ikea table top, and some plywood. It took about half a day to completely build and has held up for years. It is now my welding cart and you can see it in use in my newer videos.

    I might even try 8 cabinets. I ended up with a ton of them, like new. The place that gave them to had a bunch of money to spend, so they gave me all of their cabinets. When there new Hon cabinets showed up they had scratches and marks and my cabinets looked better than the new ones. The installer told them that they would touch up the new cabinets with spray paint and they did, but the guy told me that he should have kept the old cabinets and had them repainted. He realized that he had given away thousands of dollars.

      That is a great find! There are so many uses for those cabinets! They are extremely durable as well. I'm sure you will be making a bunch of fun stuff with them....weld carts, cabinets, they can even be used for things inside the home.

    This is cool, just now watching this thinking of ways to better organize my tools. Perfect way to have a section each for 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drive tools.

      It's a fun build. I also have another shop organization video if you want to check it out. You can get a lot of storage out of different filing cabinets. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you for doing this and sharing this. I really need and want a big tool chest, but I just don't want to fork out that much money. I ran through some ideas of using my old Sterilite plastic drawers (I saw someone's post somewhere with the outside shell made from 3/4" ply and they routed out the dados for the shelves). With how high lumber prices are right now, I am trying to hold off on any wood buying unless I have to. I started to think of repurposing a nice shaped dresser that was tall and skinny, but most drawers are deep. Or repurposing a regular sized dresser that is short and wide. Most of not built well unless you can find a good solid wood dresser. Then you have to look to see if the drawers are made tough to hold the weight of tools and other things. I personally love this idea much much better with the ball baring slides for the drawers like expensive tool boxes have. I love how you repurposed the metal top. If I can't find one, I may just make a wood top. Now off to find a good deal on these file cabinets like what you used. This is perfect.

      Thank you for the nice comment. There really is infinite options for tool storage. I used to you a wooden dresser as well. I put wheels on it and it worked pretty good. You just have to get a little creative. Good luck!

      @Conservation Garage getting those filing cabinets for $10 a piece is almost as impressive as the end result! How did you find such a good deal? People want way too much for them where I'm from :P Also, subscribed. Hope to see more.

      Hi Avi, thank you for the comment and subscription. I usually find them at thrift stores or on local advertising sites like Craigslist and Offerup. In my area you can often find them for free.

    Tip, you can get a shower grab bar for one end as a pull bar.
    Look on youtube a guy did this to a lateral file cabnit put a snap on logo on it and chrome door guards for cars it looks like a real snap on tool chest, a different guy uses plastic tubs in his to add more storage space on different levels in each draw.

    The only thing you need to do to finish it off is. Go to the auto parts store and get some chrome edge trim, and use it on the handles for the drawers. It'll define the drawers.

    • @ConservationGarage
      @ConservationGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Agreed. There are still a couple of things I want to add to it down the road like a handle, maybe a vice? And I was thinking about mounting an old snap on top box to it.

    • @ConservationGarage

      I got this metal top from an old Ikea table. i just took the legs off and mounted it to the cabinets. You could even use steel or wood if it's something you can find locally and for cheap.

    • @ConservationGarage

      I never though about using cardboard, that's pretty interesting. Maybe some 1/8" wall paneling? a 4x8 sheet in my area is $15. Maybe that could work...

      @@ebx2323 I used the rustoleum sunrise red. For the metal finish, I just hit it with a flap disc wheel and just added a design as I went.
