- AMAZING FILE CABINET TOOL BOX Conversion with Fake (faux) Patina Paint Job
Bought this filing cabinet for $30 on Facebook Marketplace. I needed more tool storage specifically for larger tools that have been sitting on shelves taking up valuable space.
I wanted to try my hand at creating a fake or faux patina look. I've never done this kind of thing before and worst case scenario I was planning to sand it down and paint it red to match my craftsman tool box. But it turned out AMAZING!!! I love how old it looks and feels in my garage. It's like it's been sitting in a working shop and getting well used for 80+ years!
I used Planetsafe Lubricants AIM to lubricate the bottom drawer that having trouble opening and closing. After a few times opening and closing the drawer it's loosened up a lot and feels much smoother. I lubed all the drawers to keep them all working great. AIM is a great product and is NOT a sponsor of this video. However I am an affiliate because I've used their products for years and they are second to none! I say it like this - it's like WD-40 but it works without the stink!

That was unbelievable! Never saw anyone do this before and the patina was a fantastic idea. I do the same thing with wood but never thought of doing it with metal. I just bought a new tool box and now I want to sand it down!
Thanks man. It is a fun project too. There’s no way to screw it up. The more layers you do the more you can sand to make it really pop.

It's amazing how heavy particle board with a veneer can be. That's a good sign it was a dense profile meant for rough use, though.
Felt like concrete honestly. Good thick veneer too should stand up to the abuse I’m gonna throw at it.
Nice work selling my file cabinets but may think twice on that after seeing what you have done.
The extra storage has been super nice. I use it as an extra workbench now. Mounted my bench grinder and bench vice to the top. Works great.
I just got one just like that but with 5 drawers a little too tall. I will put it in between 2 gladiator tall cabinets. I love red but my son wants me to paint it black with red strips in the front. Do u think it will look good red in between the 2 tall gray gladiator cabinets? I think I will be adding a piece of wood to the top too to make it look nicer

Safe lubricants at the end was hilarious after all the spray paint you threw into the atmosphere! Love it! I know this is old, but can locking caster wheels be mounted on the bottom?
It’s metal so welding caster on would be easy enough. I’m considering doing that to make it mobile. 🙌🏼

Is it secures to the floor if so how did you do that? How would you do it on a wood floor
It’s not secured to the floor. I loaded heavy items in the lower drawers to eliminate the risk of tipping.
Any updates on the 79 Troy?
It’s still sitting there under the cover waiting for all my other items to get checked off the list. Between that and my day job there’s simply not enough time in the week for much of anything. Don’t worry though. I’ll get caught up and back to it as soon as possible! It’s been calling to me for sure! 🤨

@@troysgarage Yeah, I have a bunch of copyright-free songs I downloaded years ago from Microsoft Movie Maker. One of them musta gotten purchased and/or copyrighted, because I got a copyright notification. I hear that is happening a lot with free music. I don't like UA-cam's free music. It all grates on my soul.

This was a fun project and it's super easy to recreate. I added the red over top to better match my other shop cabinets etc. It did have a real cool affect though right???
