Why Daredevil Season 2 Was The Best Season Of The Punisher

  • Marvel's The Punisher series produced by Netflix had a rocky start out of the gate. The character of The Punisher was so perfectly introduced during Daredevil's second season. So why did Netflix and Marvel Studios feel they needed to backtrack and rehash the characters origin story? Let alone, returning to that well throughout the first season of The Punisher. For some reason Hollywood thinks audiences will be lost without a lengthy origin story, but why?

Castle explaining what happened to his family was utterly, utterly heartbreaking. I think the episode was called "Penny and Dime".
I'm not a comic book fan, it's one of those things just kind of passed by, so I have no idea of Bernthal's rendition of the character bears much resemblance to the source, but his performance on its own merits was excellent. He didn't just bring physicality, violence, menace to the role; he brought pain and anguish and vulnerability, and that was absolutely vital.

I think this is why there are people that enjoyed so much this version of the character over how much fans don't. To us fans, Punisher isn't a good guy, he's a dead man walking taking as many as he can to the morgue with him, while the new public that knows him from this show, to them he's Frank Castle, the family man that lost his wife and son, so he's much more emotional. To me, the show completely missed the point about the character, but hey, it's good to see it bringing new fans to the crowd.

Btw, better thank Marvel Entertainment for not allowing Marvel Studios to introduce Daredevil & Punisher in the films like they originally wanted to (this was back when a certain producer didn’t have control of Marvel as a whole) a decade ago otherwise these conversations wouldn’t exist. In any case, unkewl me welcomes different live-action interpretations of these Marvel legends (particularly if it’s well-done).

i think people want a fast-track. it's simple-minded and self-centered "ive already seen this, so it sucks". If we left it up to the fanboys and quit putting in origin stories, then 50 years from now we will have a bunch of superheroes and villains with no backstory. All because the people who read the comics will be gone and newer generations wouldn't be able to relate to the characters as much since we didn't watch their origin unfold and were basically force-fed information with no emotional attachment. It's good for short term gain, but bad for the long-run. Those bitching about it are all about INSTANT GRATIFICATION. And they truly did nothing to earn it lol.
I was poor as shit growing up and rarely had the privilege of treating myself to a simple candy bar...so for me, I didn't get to read the comics and didn't have TV. So, I appreciate getting filled in on the backstory to these characters without having to go back and spend hours upon hours finding, buying, and reading vintage comics to catch up on the times. And if everything was a continuation with no origin....Marvel wouldn't be coming out with new movies because they couldn't hold the budget for good movies (another huge criticism) for the select fans who have watched from the start. You HAVE to put the origin in occasionally if you want to continue welcoming in newcomers and making profit for future movies.

    • @radrno7
      @radrno7 10 місяців тому

The problem is that not only we already got an origin in 'Daredevil', they did it again TWICE in his own show. Punisher quitting again and again is like burying him and digging him out like he means nothing. We don't need to keep seeing his family get shot down all the time, much less him moping about it. Netflix was just too scared to show Punisher how he really is.

It really wasn't an origin story, Daredevil acted as his true origin.
Imagine if a Spiderman movie/show kills Uncle Ben, and reveals that Uncle Ben's death was a part of a larger conspiracy instead of just being at the hands of a small time criminal. Punisher's family was killed by gangsters in the park because they saw the gangsters killing a man, it wasn't a part of a bigger conspiracy following the CIA like season 1 made it.
Also, yeah. I hope we get to see more of the Netflix cast being brought to the MCU. I believe that one of the main reasons Disney brought them to D+ was because Marvel intends to reintroduce some characters. I know that Jessica Jones is rumoured to return in She-Hulk, and a while ago (September/October 2021) Daredevil was rumoured in Spiderman NWH (came true), Kingpin was rumoured in Hawkeye (came true) and Punisher was rumoured in Moon Knight (yet to be seen). Also, Iron Fist is actually a cool character, and that one episode in Luke Cage S2 with him was actually pretty good. They had the chemistry (in the comics they have a bromance), and the two varying fighting styles was portrayed nicely. It's just that the writing team behind his own shows weren't that good, and the fight choreography (atleast in Season 1) was terrible.

I largely agree doing the origin story again might feel like its unneeded I would make the argument that a lot of people did not see the old punisher movies... but got exposed to the punished via daredevil.
While daredevil s2 does a great job of introducing this punisher I still did enjoy getting the punisher having his own first season to if nothing else at least setup "the world" he is surrounded by. characters who will no doubt come back for later seasons. Skipping that and jumping straight into another story is fine, but id rather them do these kind of stories in s2 or future seasons of the punisher and they will feel even more cool cause characters you have well established here will be involved.
I also tend to lean towards things being more self sufficient if possible. If you started at s1 of punisher not knowing it was connected to these other shows and the show REQUIRED you to have seen them to understand anything that's happening you would be frustrated. Your logic only works if you watched Daredevil first. What if the watcher didn't see the daredevil show? What if Netflix's punisher was the watcher's first exposure to the character? If these questions arent answered, you would be missing a huge amount of context that could only be provided by Daredevil, so the backtracking isn't for returning watchers but new watchers, from what I remember of the first season is that it does a good job of showing how things lead up to the second season daredevil.

I love Jon Bernthal's version of The Punisher, I really do believe him as this absolute monster of rage and killing machine. And I adore the more emotional beats, they're like the best moments due to the amazing acting on display. However, I do get other people's criticisms of this version. For example they say that he always retire the skull then coming back, Frank Castle would never do that. I always say "Fair point actually" I always defended that by saying it's for theatrical purposes. Thomas Jane is pretty good despite his film is abit iffy. I know about his short film and did the voice for the PS2 game, he seems like he truly understand the character but I can't picture him facing off 50 random guys in a room and they're absolutely bricking it like Jon's version does. My Punisher must have that relentless, animalistic nature to him, I feel like Jon's version nailed that.... Well it does that for me anyways

@@hefoughtabear118 Personally I thought the motivations for Frank's world view and actions in the first season were only really built upon. Regardless of the resolution we received in Daredevil, Frank is still a force of nature who turns vigilante justice into a warzone, and the lines being blurred between friend and foe (as we saw with Russo and Rawlins) only points out the biggest flaw Frank has. Slaughtering criminals regardless of what caused them to turn out the way they are and not providing any redemption. This is a question posed very often in Daredevil, but further elaborated when we are thrusted into the front seat of the violence in the Punisher.

The "nerd" in "nerdstalgic" forgets that 90% of the audience knows nothing about the character he knows a lot about - from previous movies, from comic books or even other TV shows. A lot of people who would tune into the show didn't know or care about Daredevil enough to tune into 2 seasons of it to watch extensive cameo of the Punisher.
We could have started with Avengers - cause "everyone knows who Ironman/Captain America/etc is and there's plenty of source material out there". But instead those characters were introduced in their own movies - cause actually - not everyone knows them. And you can tell a compeling, new story around the characters and events that some people already know.
I really don't understand why people are bothered so much by Waynes or Uncle Ben being murdered, while not complaining that Joker was used more than once, so everyone knows that one. A story needs the be complete in it of itself. You can jump certain events causing character arcs and shaping the character willy nilly, cause some people already know them. We can't start a Spiderman movie, with "there was this boy, living with his aunt and uncle" to show his life as a normal but somewhat experienced by life kid and then jump forward a few weeks/months and maybe mention that during that time he lost his fatherfigure.
Also - not a jab at the nerdstalgic, but it was kind of ironic how in the single video how we shouldn't repeat ourselves if something has been established - that exact sentence/point was repeated all over video at random points. If that once established point needed to be repeated multiple times in the video to make a point and tell the story, maybe some of the things being retold in other series/movies/media also have a place and purpose, not just being done for the memes or to spite the fans.

Respectfully, i completely disagree. The ''origin story'' we got for Punisher in DD was just a hint of more to come, which then needed to be expanded upon and fleshed out in Punisher season 1. There is also the factor which you did not take into consideration, the fact that a lot of people, me included, watched the punisher series before watching DD, without the first season of punisher exploring Frank's backstory and motivation, a lot of people would be left a bit confused. Punisher was of course a well known character before the series and i knew very well why he did what he did, but it could still end up turning some people off off the show. Also as much as i like your videos it was a bit ironic how, in a video where you talked about the punisher rethreading already established backstory, you sort of just repeated and rethreaded the same argument over and over.
But at the end of the day, regardless if i agree with your points and opinions, a very well made video.

Season 2 wasn't as good with its pacing, and the two plots didn't blend well together. However, it worked much better for the character as a whole. I legit was snarling at my TV when they revealed Russo betrayed the Castles, because that's how I would feel if a brother betrayed me. It explores a ton of themes and constantly explores the idea of right VS wrong and what they mean to us when chasing what we want, and what we might have to give up as a cost.
I didn't watch DD right away because Cage, Jones and Iron Fist were so bad. I figured it would be another show resembling shitty cable TV (like the Flash and Supergirl). Question... Was there a 2nd season of Punisher guaranteed when the writers put together season 1? I would say the answer is "no". For that reason, they gave us what we wanted at the time: justice and redemption. The Daredevil episode "Penny and Dime" made us change how we thought of Frank Castle and the subsequent episodes made us want justice for a man wronged by those he trusted. Punisher Season 1 gave us that and it fell in line with how Season 1's of the other Netflix MCU series were presented to us. After the Daredevil introduction, the Punisher should've taken a "Smallville" type of approach, one new bad guy every episode, with 1 or 2 main villains per season, pretty much a bounty hunter series, taking names and kicking ass every single episode, then we would've got the real visceral Punisher that everyone wants. But noooo netflix took 3 seasons total for Frank to finally embrace his alter ego and be out there every night cleaning the streets, until the last 2 minutes of the finale, just in time to get canceled.... 👏 👏 👏 👏

That may be, BUT. Think about those who are watching this for the first time and not Daredevil

Great point with the philosophical and moral challengers. A physical match, often mirroring power sets can be fun and has proven so in many of the superhero genre. But, often this is relied upon and doesn’t serve as a compelling villain or mirror for the hero’s emotional struggle. When you add in the conflicting views and morals, now you elevate the movie/series as well as your hero and this leaves a lasting impression on the audience that you can’t but with a million dollar CGI battle.

Do you need to watch DD season 1 to enjoy DD season 2 ? (I'm only interested in Punisher part so I'm thinking about skipping DD 1)

Not everyone wants to watch 2 entire seasons of Daredevil or read a bunch of comics before watching a new series.. I didn’t even know he was a part of daredevil till’ after I had watched TP

Loved the punisher and I didn’t watch daredevil so i didn’t know his origin story which explains why they did it obviously for the new viewers and to understand him in a way, I did and I was hoping for more but now im going to start to watch daredevil heard it’s good and can’t wait!

He might not have needed more backstory for the hardcore fanbase, but it's a Netflix show. 99% of people watching dont read comic books so imo the first season was completely necessary to set up the backstory so subsequent seasons could get into the good stuff, it just sucks they canceled it after only 2 seasons

I seen the punisher show first and just finished daredevil, I don't mind the origin story being told in the punisher series as I wouldn't have known what bernthal's punisher story was exactly. Seeing it in daredevil afterwards was just icing on the cake.

Wow, I like your analysis of the series but I think this is the first time I have completely disagreed with a nerdstalgic video. Idk why but I love season 1 of the Punisher, and thought season 2 was lacking. Good video however, love the channel!

Wrong on this one. It was amazing and expanded upon his guilt.

No, it turned Frank into jason bourne, his familys death into a convoluted conspiracy, and made him a coward by making him retire the punisher persona at the beginning of his own show even though Daredevil set him up to be a vigilante. They could expand upon his guilt and all that without betraying the essence of the character but they didnt
