This is yet another reason why the CCP must be given immediate and direct, complete legal and many other forms of complete control without any interference whatsoever, of the entire U.K. rail network, given the huge success of the Chinese Rail Projects to date for half the costs and carried out in record time well before deadlines and this also includes suburban rail projects - the U.K. government and the too-powerful U.K. trade unions in partnership with each other have been deliberately holding back rail progress in the entire U.K. - what we have at the moment is fares go up, the service goes down and where the failure of HS2 is a prime example of this

@@Vanmanyo on balance, all other things considered, we are rapidly reaching a point in the U.K. where we will have no other option but to do so, regardless of any U.K. security concerns - my native Republic of Ireland is rapidly been taken over by the CCP in many respects “under the radar” in terms of national security and it is only a matter of time before this also happens here in the U.K.

As a regular traveller on the Wrexham & Shropshire I can confirm that the customer service was absolutely fantastic, the staff were dedicated and obviously loved working for the company. The food was always excellent, especially in first class.
It really was a breath of fresh air and having to return to Crewe & Virgin when it failed was painful.
Not sure a new open access service would work without the same staff buy-in and service levels

Dft and virgin killed Wsmr. Adrian shooter even stated in one of his books if WSMR had been allowed to hire class 170s former midland mainline or been able to order 172s it probably still be running. Marylebone probably wasn't a ideal terminus
The new open access operator probably using 222s serving Euston would probably do well

"Track Access Agreements" and Station Stops should NEVER be combined to allow one TOC an advantage over the other. The whole point of "Public Transport" is to serve ALL the Public, not certain members. We have seen this in other areas where some services are not allowed to call at principal stations on the ECML (for example). Looks like the Wrexham - London link is being revived again (according to local newspapers) although the service will not run to Marylebone (according to these items).

I remember they ended rather shabbily with staff being given very little notice.
It goes to show that niche routes not from one major population centre to another are risky. It would have been far more sensible to extend Chiltern to Wrexham, but the British railway system doesn’t run on sensible.

The “competitive market” for rail transport reminds me of terrible stories from boarding schools.
The toughest guys (corporations) sleaze each other to ‘win’ their position on campus (market). They make up rules (anti-competitive clauses) as they go, and beat up those not understanding or following the code (legislation). They expect blind admiration in return, and the head master (politician) thinks everything is in line with tradition… 😂

I do think the closure of the GWR mainline between B'ham and Wolverhampton was a huge oversight, considering it severes much of Wales and the West from services to the South. Perhaps a new chord at Smethwick Galton Bridge, allowing trains from the WCML to use B'ham Snow Hill would reduce congestion and allow companies like WSMR to have proper calling points and not have to use the Coventry - Leamington Spa single track line.

I worked for WSMR from it's inception until around mid-2009 when I went off to do other things. The team was made up of a fantastic bunch of people who i learned an awful lot from. I have heard about the plans to bring WSMR back but it'll never be able to replicate the camerarderie or the family atmosphere amongst the crews and management.
It was destined to struggle with all of the restrictions it faced, but we all put our heart and soul into it nonetheless because we all wanted it to succeed.

Great video. It's funny that they call them "competition clauses", when what they actually do is *prevent* competition. The strategic rail authority in this country is a meddling, pointless joke, that adds no value for passengers, companies or shareholders. If a company is willing to use open access and take full commercial risk, they should be able to serve *anywhere* on the network. That's what competition *is* !

I would be interested to know what kind of person will be able to afford to travel HS2? I think it will be people whose fares will be payed for by their employer thus increasing the price of the products they represent. It will not be for the ordinary passenger who wishes to travel between the Midlands and the capital. I just hope it goes bust. Waste of money they could've been spent more wisely but then our politicians are not wise.

Virgin Rail Group had said, at the time, that they were happy to compete with W&S, but the terms of their contract with DfT meant they *had* to object to the OAO's application.
If another OAO is going to chance it's arm with Wrexham-Londinium, they might find they have an easier time of things; given DfT's seeming new found love for Open Access Operators!

I used W & S several times because I could drive to and park at Tame Bridge Parkway in 10 minutes as against over an hour getting a bus into Birmingham.
I have seen the new plans and if they are successful in setting up I shall use the route but only once out of interest as the route is no good to me. I see comments suggesting the mothballed TPE coaching stock but the answer will be no as DfT will not allow more Class 68 loco into Marylebone. A previous Transport Secretary tried to ban the existing 68 services and Chiltern said OK give us new DMUs so that we can take the 68s ot of service.
    Reasons W & S didn't make it.
    1. Non availability of DVTs for a long time so had to hire two locos for each train which doubled the hire costs and the extra fuel required to drag the second loco weighing over 100 tonnes.
    2. Route restriction requiring running over a freight route Aston-Stetchford with a 25mph speed limit and having to wait 15 minutes with locked doors at Birmingham International to allow a Virgin train to overtake.
    3. Several times being diverted through Birmingham New Street so having to wait for a path and having to taxi passengers to Tame Bridge
    4. Not allowed to pick up at Banbury for London so helping Chiltern over-crowding (although I have seen people sneak on at Banbury)
    5. Wrong rolling stock. They really needed express long distance DMUs but Adrian Shooter, the boss of Chiltern at the time, said when he identified the stock needed they suddenly became 'unavailable'.
    6. Chiltern were only partially involved in W & S and this was because they did not want an Open Access operator that they could not control coming into Marylebone.

Your impeccable logic could out-play the Department of Transport any day. They are the betes noires of the railway industry. The stopping points in the West Midlands (e.g. Walsall) have a lot of merit as they are large population centres and not everyone wants the tedium of going into a major city to catch a train. My two main questions about WSMR would be, which rolling stock would they run and how would they get slots in Euston? My suspicion is they would try to pick up ex-Avanti class 221s so they can run at 125mph on the WCML and they would need diesels for the route from Wolverhampton to Wrexham. Then Euston is already completely jam packed all day every day. Avanti and LNWR already use up basically all the available slots at Euston and Euston is one of the busiest railway stations in the world.

And those new trains are schedule to enter service sometime later this year. Or W&S Railway to inherit the Class 222 Meridian DEMUs from East Midlands Railway as they too are to replace the Class 222 with the Class 810 Aurora IETs that are also to enter service later this year.

I think the idea of running services from smaller towns/cities to London is a great idea for local communities and i know alot of communities campaign hard for old rail services (especially those too and from london) to be reinstated but they have to be realistic and ask why the service was withdrawn in the first place. Lets be realistic a lot of those routes to smaller communities lost money and altho i do think smaller communities deserve a good rail service how much should the tax payer subsidise that?
