There were tunnels underneath connecting the stores underground. I worked at Bread Co in '99. We spent many hours of break time exploring down there. Found two full size pizza ovens, a dumb waiter, office w a huge safe, a full locker room and what looked like showers, just under Bread Co. I'll always hold a special place in my heart for Tilt! R.I.P.
The building you call Schweig-Engle is where Woolworths was until early 1989 when the enclosure project started. The Woolworth store was 65,000 ft covering 2 levels. When the mall was remodeled and enclosed, the upstairs portion of the Woolworth’s became Victoria’s Secret, Express, and EXP/Structure... all owned by The Limited, and the lower level of Woolworths was briefly a Phar-Mor Discount Drugs (very large drugstores that were about 3x the size of a Walgreens). Later, after Phar-mor closed, it did ultimately become Schweig-Engle. The building you credited in the video as Woolworths (next to Macy’s and the stairway to nowhere) was a run of stores that originally included a Burger King and a Boyd’s (small sized department store that sold dress and casual wear for men and women). When the mall was enclosed and those businesses shuttered, that run of space became Oshman’s SuperSports USA, which did have indoor hockey and indoor basketball courts, etc. The novelty of that store wore off quickly though and it was replaced by Burlington Coat Factory which by that time was more suitable for the demographics Northwest Plaza was serving by that time. As for the stairway to nowhere... when NWP was an outdoor mall, that was an active stairway that took shoppers from the outdoor plaza near Famous-Barr and Boyd’s down to the parking lot.
Your comment about the Mexican place that used to be Dick Clark’s bandstand Grill that was originally a magic pan crêpe house. It was built shortly after the new Stix Baer& Fuller that black glass building over there was built as well. I would go there w my mom once a while, It was really good. My dad was the store manager at the Woolworth store, which was right next to the Sears, but it’s kind of pushed back. Great memories in that place.
I remember going to Tilt a few years back to see what it had become and I almost broke down. That arcade was a part of my childhood and seeing only 20-40 arcade units in there as opposed to 250-300 was hard. I know the arcade scene has been dead for some time in the U.S but it was so depressing.
Those "stairs to nowhere" used to go up to the main level, the Way-In store and Tiffany's Bakery on the right, and the Famous Barr (men's dept) courtyard side door opening on the left. Before it was enclosed it led past those stores and through to the courtyard fountain.
Yeah, she's just about gone now.we drove right by it on Lindbergh the other night.sad to see it go.I remember going there on weekends and catching a movie at NorthWest 9,or hanging out at Tilt....good memories.
i remember reading an article a while back that st. ann fought walmart on tearing down northwest plaza to build super walmart. as bad as walmart is, st. ann really needs that revenue and now with it moving to bridgeton, i fear that some of the restaurants and stores built around the older walmart (like fashion bug and payless) will eventually close as people are now drawn to bridgeton instead.
I lived less than a mile from this mall in my teens in 90's and frequented it practically weekly. The Mexican restaurant was NEVER Dick Clark's American Band Stand restaurant. Dick Clark's was next to the main food court/movie theater/TILT entrance. The sports store was called Oshman's.
wow this was neat hearing that. i currently live here in st.ann and let me tell you. about the only thing we have going for us anymore is the airway centre sign with the neon woman for the cool drive in that once was. now its a shop'n'save. at least they kept the cool neon sign. and it works
The sears is long gone now...... and now they r getting rid of the walmart down the street from northwest plaza and building a new one by the bank. Yea thts just what we need.... MORE VACANT LOTS )=

Thanks for doing this been a long time NW shopper, also the restaurant was also a Show Me's.
Dick Clark's was on the other side of the mall - the building was a Show-Mes, and a Magic Pan fondue restaurant before that.

You're INSANELY lucky security didn't throw you out! I just took pictures inside this mall, they caught me, and threw me out!
