*I [permanently] moved to StL in 1985, because I was tired of flying to work every day from NYC (about 2 hours, the same as a commute from Connecticut, but it does get old). I LOVED it here! It was a little tiny city with delusions of grandeur, but it was exceptionally safe, exceptionally inexpensive (I bought my "commuter home" (the one I would crash in if I was too tired or running too late to fly back to my nice warm wife that night - brand new in what is now Maryland Heights: 3 lg BR, huge fully done basement, middling kitchen, and 3 acres behind the house for the dog: $87,000 complete. With every conceivable extra on top of it. Eating here was great too, as they had some outstanding (and I'm a genuine foodie who knows his way around Michelin restaurants) places to go wild! I used to go to Saleems (Lebanese, in the loop - many years before they shut) at least once a week, and order the entire menu , with a wife and a bottle of really nice alcohol for under $200! You could find amazing food here at prices that looked like a food pantry - it was incredible!*
*Then the fall started - all the defense contractors got up and left, pretty much all at once, along with the surviving Bell, and suddenly StL had 25% more workers than jobs. That took a few years to fix, but they did manage to fix it through some very creative deferment of taxes and other incentives. Of course, the Democrats took over again (this is a VERY Democrat place, so unless you have political thoughts to the extreme left of Abbie Hoffman, you need to be careful here), and ruined it all over again.*
*StL has a lot of positives and a a lot of negatives, but the two things that have consistently held it back for the last 60 or so years has been the deadly combo of "The Old Boys Network" (related to that **_ridiculous_** "Where'd ya go ta hiskool?" gibberish that comes out of EVERY mouth that grew up here, and the intensity of the locals beliefs that they are a large city and should be treated as such. They are so insecure in their city that they keep destroying it. For example, they put several "special" laws in places for municipalities with a population exceeding 1 million persons. It was FULL of giveaway goodies, and actually did a lot of good where they were aimed (Saint Louis City, which had well over 1.2 million people here when I arrived, and Kansas City, with about the same). Now we don't have a single county with a million people - because the cops here are TERRIBLE. They won't do crap about crime, but they have huge overbearing task forces that go out for tax collection on a very, VERY regular business tax collection patrol several times a month. That 1 MPH adds up you know. So does every other non-important thing they now specialize in, since actually working crime is both dangerous and not half as much fun.*
*Also, corruption is BAD here. I grew up in New York City - you know, the place that both created the model and then perfected it with Tammany Hall. And StL makes them look like a bunch of schoolboy pussies. The corruption here is UNBELIEVEABLE! From simply trying to get a job to just trying to mind your own business, the local police have utterly destroyed their reputation, and are seen a lot like New Yorkers see their police: as an occupying army, ready to kill you over nothing, just for the fun of it. No, I am not kidding - and I am totally White passable. The cops here are a DISGRACE to the name of crooked policing!*
*I've lived in 23 cities across 3 continents, and there was a time that I **_heavily_** recommended StL (1983 through 1990), but today my advice is to move here ONLY if (a) you have no other choice, and, (b) don't mind being armed 24 hours a day, no matter what (we finally became a no permit state a few years ago). You WILL eventually need that weapon, since the cops would rather watch you get mugged and killed than step in and do anything meaningful about it - like waking up.*

I have lived in St. Louis city for 8 years and love my historic neighborhood. My neighbors here have been more friendly, supportive,and helpful than anywhere I have lived in country areas, suburban areas, or other cities before. Don't be afraid, it is really great.
I was born and raised in St. Louis when I had to move shortly after I got married. Had to live in Southern California, which I hated and was only happy to FINALLY return five years ago.

The biggest issues is the fact that St Louis shrunk 60% over a 20 year period. Like Detroit. I visit quite a bit for work. Some of the historic areas are great, the art museum and symphony are great. Baseball and hockey. The inner city crime is really bad.

As an STL native you're very honest for a realtor. I live in the Bay Area CA now and I enjoy going back once or twice a year. Such an underrated food scene compared to other cities like Chicago and Nashville. Subscribed and liked.

Saint Louis is not for those who hate high humidity. It's as wet and sticky in June, July, August, and September as a tropical jungle in Central America.

I have many fantastic memories of St Louis. I love the people, charm, and cost of living to income ratio. Many can purchase entry-level homes on entry-level salaries.
Concentrated poverty, bureaucracy, and lack of regional growth strategy are a few things working against the area.
I dont know if life will bring me back to St Louis, but i agree St Louis can give almost anyone a good life if they want it.

As an outdoorsman, I appreciate that I can get out in nature quickly. The Missouri department of conservation and state park system is amazing and accessible. St. Louis is also a gateway to the Ozarks with a lot of outdoor opportunities.
It looks like the Louis and Clark trail gets really crowded in summer.
St Louis is very nice to visit. Living there is not really the best idea. Look into Kansas City if you want to move to this area of the country but dont want most of the negatives of St Louis. The people of Kansas City are just so so much nicer to each other and outsiders. Most people you will meet in Missouri would agree. St Louis still has tons of cool attractions to visit and see, like the City Museum if you travel with young ones. If you are considering moving to Missouri I advise you to visit KC and check it out before settling on STL

Brick and stone the architecture is so amazing. It’s a beautiful city. Easy to get around has a nice train system is walkable and it’s easy to bike around. The summers are hot, but the winters are better than Chicago. I in the area around and St. Louis. There is a lot of outdoor activities. I think St Louis is very underrated, and I would rather see a video say what is beautiful about St Louis .
I'm a transp!ant and have't experienced the clannishment others here are complaining about. Violent crime is an issue of course which has caused st louis to rapidly shed residents since the 50s. At some point, St Louis will have no one left but the criminals.

I love St. Louis born & raised. I am blessed to have been able to move out the inner city. And got into traveling. I wanna leave so bad, so I constantly stay on the road (Reason I'm still located here is because I have a 5 year old here). First off, St. Louis is racist to some degree. When I was in NY, Philly, LA, Atlanta. Other races arent scared to come up to me and socialize. STL is a closed minded town. The politicians give me a old man vibe. There aren't visualizers at all. We last to get everything. Downtown is a warzone. I love my city and rep it everywhere I go but I cant wait to leave when my son reaches teenage status. If you were giving mad properties, or have businesses you should stay obviously. Or like me an family issue. But other that that, if have certain ambitions and dreams, St. Louis isnt the best place.

I would agree that STL city and county are very backwards compared to NYC and Philly..The reason I have left and stayed in NYC is because STL city and county are both very backwards very anti-city and progressive. STL stays the same and never changes. It is very hard to find a good job and the mass transit system isn't any good. I think if STL city and county were to merge they could work on developing a more productive city. But the folks there are too backwards to see that and they really like the small town mentality.
You ain’t never lied
I grew up in STL. The city is not that great, The Metro Link has gone downhill and not that many people use it. The county is nice and I think most people seem to just think of STL as all the same. Yet county and City are different. North county is not so great anymore.
Traffic is not great as most have moved south or west of the county. Thus people are forced to drive longer distances. 270 has been widened to the max and yet, a parking lot.
Weather is a big one for me and the reason why I left. Summer is brutal and if you like huge thunderstorms where the sky turns dark green, it's the place to go.
I think weather is the #1 complaint that I hear from people who live here is St. Louis. That being said, I've had people who are thinking about moving here that say the swings in temperature and a distinct 4 seasons are a couple of the reasons why they are looking to move to St. Louis. Many of them are coming from places where the temperature stays relatively consistent for much of the year and they are looking for some variety. Thanks for checking out the channel!
@@LivingInStLouisMO - I grew up ad lived there for many years. The summer is the worst. I see it every time I go back to STL to see my parents. I think it's good to move away from STL and then go back. When you do, you notice it. The winters are not bad and the only year I can think of was the blizzard of 82. I live in PA and we get Nor'Easters. As for the rest of the weather, way better.
Swings in temp exist everywhere and for some reason, people think STL is unique. It is not. Go live and work around the world. You'll see.
My dad had a car repair ship in Marlborough. I worked there growing up and it was a great workout for people in the summer. No AC and working on cars. I put it this way, 4 months of that is what I deal today for 2 weeks here in PA.
No one is FORCED to drive longer distances. WTH! You can live in 50 neighborhoods that are relatively safe and close to the center of the region where you can find the best restaurants and cultural institutions. It's also extremely affordable compared to other regions in the US.

@@johnkennamann1462 - Correct. You have to address things like how much can I earn, family relocation, school districts and lifestyle. So yes, you are not forced to but it's a lifestyle change and giving up some.
Since you live there, you see the migration out to the west and south. People are willing to do the drive for work as opposed to live in a "relativity safe" neighborhood or have their kids go to school in a place where it's fights and who knows what else goes on, plus teachers that just give you a pass just because you don't create a problem for them. I know, I went to a district there and that's what it was like.
I was an Army brat whose family had moved around every 18-24 months and we moved into the Kirkwood area when I was 13. 5 years later, I'm graduating from Kirkwood and I'm still 'the New Kid" It's a little hard to fit in where generations have lived in the community, older brothers and sisters, even parents attended the same schools. It seemed very clannish to me. I left for the Navy, had a career that took me from Miramar California to Virginia and the DC Beltway, and there just wasn't much opportunity back in the Lou. My parents had moved away, my brothers and sister had moved, and I didn't want my SoCal born kids to experience the clannishness and ostracism I'd faced.
I still keep in touch with a few classmates, it seems that the successful ones are the ones who moved, while the folks who stayed in the STL failed to launch

@@LivingInStLouisMO I finished up at NAVAIR HQ down at Pax River...went back to SoCal (San Diego) and seemed like I'd been at SAIC and back in my house when SAIC wanted me at Tyson's Corner. You get in the DMV Beltway and you'll never have to look for another job...they'll look for you!

St Louis is quite difficult for those with pollen allergies. It is one of the most pollen intense areas in the entire U S

The homeless is no where near as bad as it is in agricultural areas in California.

The St. Lous region is great. Winters are mild compared to the North but summers being hot and humid is a negative. I only go in to the city for Cardinals and Blues games and now there is a very popular soccer team thanks to the owners of Enterprise and others that privately funded the new soccer stadium. There is a huge soccer fan base here given many years of Catholic youth league soccer and now the largest Bosinan immigration in the U.S.. St. Louis got a bum rap when St. Lous Rams owner Stan Kroenke wanted the large TV market of L.A. over a new downtown stadium STL was prepared to build for its large TV market but did need an owner to do so. The XFL Battle Hawks were like a minor league NFL team yet average close to 40,000. There are other attractions like Forest Park including the zoo, museums, and the expansion of Union Station and the Arch grounds. People who like the Arts seem to have plenty of alternatives. St. Louis is affordable by comparison but I worked for years with people who lived on the Illinois side of the St. Louis region for even better affordability and lower taxes. There are great neighborhoods in the city but the problem is they are close to very poor areas riddled with crime that goes in to the downtown at night especially. It all comes down to your risk tolerance for crime. Car jacking, busted car windows, stolen cars, drive by shooting, etc. Teens seen walking streets with AR-15s. . I have practically a zero risk tolerance for crime so hardly ever venture in to the city however there are parts of north St. Louis county dangerous as well. Unforunately the city of St. Louis crime is similar to most U.S. cities.

I noticed you mentioned StL City seceding from StL County, and that individual municipalities often have their own police force, but you DIDN'T mention that StL City Police is the ONLY metropolitan police force in the country run by the STATE, rather than the city itself (this was the result of unfathomable levels of corruption in city government, circa 1920s, I think).
For the record, I grew up in Spanish Lake, have had home addresses in Florissant, Hazelwood, U City, & St. Peters, and currently live in the Metro East.
The city took over the police again years ago, but neither group has run the police well.
Although homelessness is a problem, St. Louis by far is doing a better job than some cities elsewhere. I visited Seattle last month, where this is out of control in certain districts.

Yes! You can find people free-basing everywhere in Seattle and there is a lot of trash everywhere. I still love Seattle but the way they handle the homeless population and drugs is really out of control.

I'm thinking of moving back to St.Louis after leaving in 1974 for Oakland,Ca where I still reside. I'm retired now and most of my family lives in St.Louis which is the main reason I want to move back. I own a home in Oakland but want a nice,comfortable townhome with 3 bedrooms and at least 2 bathrooms as I'll be living with my identical twin sister who is also retired,my 84 year old mother and my 8 year old cocker spaniel. I don't care about crime or racism as I was the victim of a violent crime here in Oakland which left me permanently disabled and the subtle racism in California is worst
imo than covert racism. A lot of California is racist and segregated and this is achieved by pricing properties sky high knowing that the average minority can't afford such high prices. I know when I lived in St.louis from 1964-1974 we lived in nice,new modern homes in Berkeley,U City, Hathaway Manor and off of Kingshighway. Not so in Calif where all I could afford here are old,outdated,small homes. St.Louis also has better healthcare for seniors and better medical facilities as well.

St. Louis is one of the most inexpensive places to live in the United States. If you’re born here, it’s a sentence that you stay here because of the cost of living.
Born & raised in St Louis. No city I hate more including Chicago and that place is in the dirt socially. I've experienced nothing in St Louis except racism, deceit, and hate. No matter your race, racism WILL find you here. Your fellow man will hate you just for crossing his path. Your children will turn against you here. You will Never know happiness again. I honestly believe it's a felony to become joyful in St Louis. The locals will bash you & lie you into the grave. I suggest that you not attempt to achieve betterment in any fashion here, they will purposefully drown you in misery in an attempt to make you like them. If you are a naturally hateful person then St Louis Missouri is the perfect place for you. Start expecting the worse once the Arch comes into focus.

I live in the city and it is great. Dont let the statistics scare you, they can be very misleading. I wouldn't say it is declining any more than a number of former manufaturing old cities, but that is why you can great bargain on a house and be part of the renewal.
They do not like people from st clair county Illinois i mean Belleville O Fallon Fairview heights Illinois signal hill and yet how many of them live over here
The county should not merge with the city think about Belleville Illinois and st clair county Illinois does not work

I’m from St.Louis and actually moved to KC. You’re better off in KC imo because the people are very friend out here. You’ll get a more sense of community than STL on top of an influx of opportunities.
Yes! Coming from Lesbian from the Lou. Definitely gay friendly. In South city. It’s called The Grove. The whole block is where all the gay bars are. Pride is also a big event in June of every year. Also in south city on Grand ave many businesses show their support for the gay community by having rainbow sticker displayed on the doors or windows of businesses. Also there are many church’s that are gay friendly. My city might be off the chain but I go hard for my city!
Heck yes it is. Unfortunately, our LGBTQ hangouts are dwindling but we have some spots left. Overall, though, you don't have to hide here. People will accept you.
I'm following you because of your honest take on my city. I'm currently researching the Pruitt Igoe project my mom was born and raised in. She died of an Autoimmune disorder and I want to know if she was exposed to those chemicals the military sprayed on them in the 50's

Maybe you feel like you have a good reason to move to st louis... you do not. Trust me when I tell you , do everything you can to not move there
St. Louis City is a great place to live and hang out. You just have to know what areas to avoid.
St. Louisians might not seem friendly to outsiders because we're skeptical of people until we get to know them. I happen to live in part of the city that attracts a lot of out-of-town visitors so I try to be helpful and cordial. But you will find that a lot of us travel in packs with friends and family and tend to ignore people outside of our circle. It's a little different here in the CWE. We strike uo conversations with anyone over here.
The only unfriendly people I have seen in St. Louis are people who moved there from other states, obviously were not brought up with the same lessons on manners and polite friendliness as midwesterners and are not considerate law abiding drivers 😏. Sadly, these outsiders are influencing our younger generations here in the midwest cities.
A Sunday in St. Louis is a depressing experience
Here's my comment telling people NOT to move to st louis. Not going to go into details but I very much dislike STL. Now I hate when someone says "don't move to X" and doesn't tell me a better place to move to, so here is where you should move instead nearby:
1. Kansas City: Growing downtown, just overall better city than STL
2. Springfield MO: Population is almost 200k, the city is really pleasant in size which is basically a big box where outside of it it's more rural with great housing prices. Branson is 40 minutes south with all the perks of Branson. Weather is significantly nicer than STL. Springfield is really great!
3. North west arkansas: Similar to Springfield but more in the heart of the ozark mountains. Great upcoming areas like bentonville.
If you have family in STL that you want to visit on the regular, these are all close enough by that you can make weekend trips to STL.
Um... Springfield is having a major issue with rising crime and the many times I've been there, I really don't think I would like living there. I'm originally from Ohio, I live in Chesterfield, and I'm looking to move further out from St. Louis over the next year or so. With all of that, I'm by no means a St. Louis apologist, I first moved here with my wife in 2009 and we were in Calverton Park until the 1 year anniversary of the Michael Brown incident and I've not been happy with St. Louis County over the last few years especially, so I definitely understand the reservations of moving to the St. Louis area, but I'm not sure Springfield is a viable alternative. Even with the rise in work from home, the St. Louis area still has a lot more economic opportunities as a whole. Kansas City I guess is alright, but really any medium to large metro area is going to have similar if not the exact same issues.
St. Louis does have its quirks and different parts have completely different "atmospheres". That's really the one thing I think has struck me as the most odd about the area. I grew up in a suburb/exurb of Columbus and while there were variances with the Columbus Metro, it wasn't quite as stark of a difference as you will find just in St. Louis County let alone the St. Louis Metro.
I live in St. Louis all my life about 61 years. I can’t say one positive thing about the city now one it is the biggest dump I have ever seen. The people are cruel and mean they are not friendly at all. All my neighbors have attacked me for numerous reasons that they’ve made up. The transportation is horrible. You gonna wait anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes before they’re even going to show up and the public transit is a very dangerous place. there is a lot of crime that takes place on the train system, and on the public buses. Anytime I had to look for a job it’s taking me about three months to find one there are jobs, but they’re very picky. People are very opinionated in the city and they only think their opinions are the ones that matter people are very uneducated in the city as well that’s due to a lot of the culture that we have in the city. never recommend anybody move into savings. It’s a complete and utter dump

I was born and raised in St. Louis. I went to Bishop DuBurg HS. I moved in the Early 90's . I go back every now again for different reasons.
I'm sure your spouse would even recommend St Louis😮 probably right after she takes out a half a million dollar life insurance policy on you with a double indemnity clause for murder😢😮😅

This is the worst area to live roads are horrible crime rate is high. Most people's attitudes were rude. Never even want to visit there again

I'd say the biggest thing you have to get over is the city-county thing.
Some of the things he talks about apply to the city some to the county. There are probably books written on this but in short the city and county broke into two over 100 years ago. Initially it was because the city didn't want to pay for things in the county which was a lot of farmland.
Flash forward, the county is expanding and the city is contracting. However the county is divided into over 50 different municipalities while the city is just one. Needless to say it can be confusing for people if they work in one and live in the other because there are different things between each municipality.
Also getting license plates is confusing because of this. When you try to get your car licensed each municipality has a different tax rate. Some newcomers consider it a nightmare and are totally confused.
These can all be overcome as Missourians have been putting up with it for years.
Oh, and the high school thing really happens. If you're in St Louis and they ask you where you went to school they mean high school not college. By that one question they can tell your wealth, social status, and athleticism.
I grew up in St. Louis and no one every asked me which high school I went to. You can get license plates at any license office in the state, they figure out the rates so I'm not sure what this guy is talking about.
Just don’t move to St. Louis period. It’s not worth it. That also includes St. Louis county it’s just not worth it.
West county is still OK, the farther from city is better. St. Charles and St. Peters are great. The guy in the video is kind of an apologist for the policies which made City of St. Louis "west" east St. Louis...
Wrong. Just plain wrong. I've lived elsewhere and travel a lot. St. Louis has certainly has problems, but most of them are common American problems, not unique to STL.

st louis is a good place if you are a tourist. there are a lot of places that are free to enter because of the taxes we pay to support various attractions here. not too good on public transportation though. cost of housing is some of the lowest in the country. taxes on food is not too bad either. crime is bad because like a lot of big cities we have a democratic mayor in the city.

St. Louis is a terrible city even if you’re a tourist. The main reason why it’s terrible is because it’s located out in the middle nowhere. If St. Louis was on the east coast, it would have way more traffic. St. Louis is like that failing restaurant because it’s located in a crappy inconvenient location.
@chillwill5080 first of all, I like St. Louis. But let’s be real. Take a drive through downtown during business hours. See how it’s almost a ghost town. For a Midwest city, it might be acceptable but compared to an east coast city, a European or Asian city, that is really really bad……It’s still an interesting city though but that’s because of its past history not really the present
@chillwill5080 Well compared to the rest of America it is in the middle of nowhere. Growing on the east coast and having been to the west coast, most people don’t pass through St. Louis unless if maybe you’re from Chicago. Some of those east and west coast people will visit St. Louis for a business trip only. The reason why I visited St. Louis is because it’s so out of reach that I had to visit out of curiosity since I’m one of those rare people that like to learn about American cities by actually visiting. It’s still an interesting city and a significant part of American history even though it gets ignored by a lot of people.
@chillwill5080 I grew up in Philadelphia and now live in Georgia. Most people on the east coast drive up and down the 1 95 corridor from Boston to Florida. Florida being extremely popular. If they visit the Midwest, it’s commonly Ohio or Chicago. Commonly St. Louis would be just for business trips. One of the reasons I visited St. Louis is because a New Yorker I knew visited St. Louis on a business trip and he liked it. I thought the city was strange and empty but in a unique fascinating way. I actually enjoyed seeing the abandoned looking neighborhoods. Very nice looking houses and streets.

Don't even think about moving there unless you can afford a tall fence a moat and a security team.

Part of the problem is the city is a one party town. Democrats hav run St. Louis for almost 70 years. Please understand, I am NIT saying Republicans have the answer, however without the political give and take, you just keep doing the same things over and over and hope for different outcomes.
Idk how I came across this video lol. Anyways Avoid stl at all costs. Lived there for 9 years for school. Seasonal depression, allergies, high crime in certain areas. Extreme Racism, boring, long winters and summers, non progressive, low wages, minimal diversity, to name a few. Unless for family, school or work I absolutely do not see a reason to
move to stl.

St Louis Missouri is a Blessed place to live. Every place in the world has crimes, good and bad. St Louis Missouri is a family oriented State. People in St. Louis gets along well with each other and we have enjoyable times in the park listening to music by different bands all the time , during Spring thought the fall. There's less racism in St. Louis Missouri. The children that were raised after the late 80s when "Grand Thief Auto" game came out, and the children played this dangerous games. The most impressionable years of their lives. Their parent or parents gave them this game to play to keep them still, are now playing that game out in their reality and not understanding why they're engaged in criminal activities. The images are in their minds. Their parents were mostly too young to raise their children because they were babies themselves. But overall, Missouri is a wonderful place. It doesn't have oceans to swim and surf. However, it's relaxing. Please do Missouri a favorite, keep the negativity away from St. Louis, Missouri and have a great time without fear. It's false evidence appearing real. STL 🤎 "SHOW ME STATE"!

It's a wasteland of crime. I live in west county now...I lived in Dallas for 10 years and it was like going to the moon economically.
