      He shouldn't be too bad. Many carbon frames have a short headtube height. He might have been able to buy a lower profile stem actually and make it work. Some stems are only around an inch tall where is attaches to the steerer tube.

    • @dabooge
      @dabooge 2 роки тому +24

      Shorter stack stem (DMR Defy), shorter stack upper headset (slamset or similar), plus some higher rise bars, and he could probably make that work. Still, always sucks when you forget to factor in steerer length!

      @@RC-fp1tl there is a company called ND tuned that sells the special press tools to get the job done. You'll need a minimum of 10 ton hydraulic press. I designed and made my own press out tools. That did require a metal lathe and milling machine. I've done a Rockshox revalation and a 2018 Fox 36 so far. The Fox was much easier to do. well you actually ARE changing the properties of titanium when you heat it up to change the colors. Granted its not as much as it is with steel, but there is a slight change.
    You can actually change the surface color with a specific voltage tho without changing the metal itself. For this you got to dump the piece in baking soda/water solution, connect one pole to the water itself and the other one to the metal, the duration you leave it in for and the voltage determine the color, 15v for example gives you a nice orange/gold while 22v gets you that nice purple. works great!

    • @7452Michael
      @7452Michael 2 роки тому +2

      Heating titanium this way might not necessarily change its properties. You’d have to heat it to it’s recrystallization temperature to do that. From some quick googling it seems you have to get it to 600-700 F for the oxide layers to form, whereas the recrystallization temp is over 1500 F. So if you’re careful with the torch you won’t be changing the properties at all

    • @acochran9768
      @acochran9768 2 роки тому +2

      There's no way you're "changing the properties" of either the titanium or the steel by waving a MAPP gas torch at it for a few seconds. All he's doing in the video is putting a little surface finish on the titanium. To change the bulk properties of titanium or steel would require a much larger heat source applied over a much longer time.

    • @dermax_hd
      @dermax_hd 2 роки тому +1

      @@7452Michael well with torches like he used, they get to around 4000°F. You'd have to be REALLY careful not to change the structure at least a bit. Probably not even worth mentioning bit I'd still rather use the electric method for a structural part like a crank, collar or similar..

    • @acochran9768
      @acochran9768 2 роки тому +1

      @@dermax_hd You're just burnishing the surface. No different than anodizing (which is what you describe). To change the structural capacity of Ti or CrMo (crank, frame, whatever) you have to change the microstructure which requires a bunch of stress, or a lot of heat (or both), and/or an aggressive chemical environment that causes some kind of cracking.

    For forks with short steerer tube, have a look at the Syntace stems. The Flatforce needs only 22mm steerer tube and when turned upside down raises the bar significantly, which replaces those spacers. Or, more conservatively, the Megaforce3 needs 30mm of steerer tube but only has a 6 degree angle, so it won‘t raise the bar so high.

    Kevin: "What do you clean that stuff with?"
    Seth: "A paper towel"
    LATER
    Kevin: "Gonna get that coating nice and scratched up..."
    Me: "Or you could use something like a piece of tape and not scratch up your new chainring 😂😂"
    Still later:
    Seth: "Why did you take a torch to your titanium cranks?"
    Kevin: "Because I wanted to see it change color"

    You guys are great! I laughed through the whole video! Just what I needed today. You both have so much patience or you're amazing at editing or both, either way, this was totally entertaining! I loved when Kevin called Seth Dad!😆 Great video. You should sell day passes for people to help out with work on the trails. You're like an amusement park and the payoff is, at the end of the day, we get to send every trail, after signing a waiver of course! I would definitely make the drive up there for that and then I would cook us all dinner in that amazing kitchen.. I've been cooking for large groups for 25 years. ✌🤙
