Bike check! All about my mountain bikes and what they're for

  • Today we'll do an update on my mountain bike fleet, which is now the best it has ever been. Sure, I've always had capable bikes, but I've also had decision paralysis when choosing which one to take out on the trail. Now, each bike has a very specific purpose.

this is exactly what it’s like when i explain my guitar collection, to people who don’t know about the hobby they have no idea why i need so many, to them it’s a bunch of guitars (or bikes), they may be different colors or shapes, but “they’re all just guitars (or bikes)”, but to people who are interested in the hobby know that some are better for different tasks, and some for others, and it’s also nice having multiple just for the unique experience

Literally just did the same thing & figured out what my ideal fleet is going to be! Downloaded all my strava data & compared what type of bike I was riding to what the ideal bike is for that scenario. Pretty insightful activity! Distilled the fleet down to 3 bikes: 1) Long-travel enduro for riding out west & bike-parks, 2) short-travel hard-tail for general trail riding, 3) "all-road" for urban commuting/road rides/gravel/bike-packing, probably will get 2 wheelsets for pavement & gravel/off-road. Maybe a DJ down the road, but we only have 1 decent spot where I live.

hardtails work pretty well on pump tracks and dirt jumps if you just pump the tyres up a lot. they take a bit of extra effort sure, but theyre still fun in my eyes

@@sufyanm4661 Oh for sure, a HT works fine on pump-tracks. I would want a DJ for actual steep/lippy dirt-jumps tho, but we only have 1 spot in my city. Would be fun to bring on road-trips tho where they are legit sweet tracks.

    Bear with me. 😉
Despite I’m no mountain bike rider (nor trial or mud, etcetera) this channel has really become one of my favourites.
Short story: I haven’t been biking for years. A slipped disc (second one) caused problems with my left leg’s strength and nerve signals were f*****. So I sold my bike (hybrid) two years ago. However, since slipped discs have a tendency “to move/relocate its problems” the strength and the nerve’s signal (knock on wood) has returned. So, I bought a new bike last week (a hybrid arrived with DHL) and since I don’t want to challenge faith (I turned 63 the 10th) I have to wait for the snow and ice to melt. Winter arrived in March?! Gee… 😬
Anyhow, I really have enjoyed watching these videos, and even if I’m not into mountain bikes there are a lot of good things I picked up. One of those things are all the different bike parts-manufacturers and retailers, Seth mentioned. The thing is that I have never ever heard about any (maybe some) of those, and now a door flung open to lots of cheap, useful and good parts, on e.g. Amazon. (Amazon is rather new here in Sweden).
It’s funny how people stumble upon something and then find themselves “hooked”.
    Thanks!
    Anders, Stockholm 🇸🇪

I regret writing anything, since the focus landed on Bezos (sick) wealth.

@@AndersMagrioteli I urge you to not be put off by the incessant responses that always come. Hazard of the internet, and there's always one that thinks people actually care about their narcissistic opinions. (e.g. Lukas Walter)
Anyway, I share your view on this channel opening a part of the sport that I find really fun! It feels great to get out in the mountains (munros, here) and just soak it all in. The parts availability is probably about the same here in northern Scotland as they are for you. That can be hard to grasp by most of the children posting from the US. No worries, wanna ride the MDH in August? Just swap on a set of 29ers. I too am shorter and started riding on 26". 29s can get a bit rangy and slow to turn in in tight stuff. I have a Nishiki (?) Red Wolf City 1x3 (normal 3-speed) 26" stiff bike that I've had since 2011. I've had the rear hub replaced, and I've also replaced the saddle and pedals. What's fun about it is it's so obscure. I've seen one other image of one online, in an image result preview of a deleted ad, also here in Sweden. Anyway, as much as I'm into this fairly newfound interest in biking, I really feel like my little bike can accomplish anything. I have very strong legs, so I almost always ride in third gear.

Had 29" wheels on the previous bike, went 27.5" for the extra maneuverability. 29" feels faster but the stuff I ride is so gnarly that 27.5" seems to work better in the chunky stuff. A lot of west coast riders are heading back to 27.5" so we may see a resurgence of that wheel size. I'm nearly 6' tall for reference.

Man, a reminder of how poor I am lol…😭 Stuck with my Walmart bike so hopefully something good can come with the recent buzz with the bike market. It would be pretty interesting to hear your take on what’s happening with the bike industry recently Seth in a video or something.

Hey, I have a question are you always going to keep the lefty on your hard tail or are you going to switch back to the 140mm .

Related to a proper setup, not sure if here is the proper place to ask for, but any help in this regards will be appreciated, I'm looking for left side 10-11-12 speed thumb shifters, does this kind of shifters exists? Does makers build this kind of setup? After some search I'm not able to find proper results, found a 9 speed shifter and similar grip ones, but anybody knows if more speeds' thumb shifters do exists? Could a 2-3 speeds left shifter be converted to a 10-11-12 (maybe swapping the internals)? I would like to operate the rear transmission with my left hand (thumb) and wonder if this kind of setup is used/preferred by other riders. Thanks a lot in advance.
