      Hey man, I just bought a 2006 F150 5.4 Triton FX4 lifted, with 140k miles, for 4k. it does needs a tune up. Do you think this was a good price? Also, how much do you think its a reasonable price for a tune up that only requires changing the sparkplugs, coils, fuel filter, PCV Valve, and camshaft would be?

    • @JustKingAdrian
      @JustKingAdrian  Рік тому +1

      @@juanagudelo409 I think that's a fair price just based off the truck and mileage. I paid $4,500 for this one bone stock and a little rough around the edges a little over 2 years ago. The price of a tune up is hard to say. What state are you in? What makes you want to do the camshafts? The spark plugs, coils, fuel filter are an easier job. The hardest out of those is the spark plugs because these trucks have a history of them breaking off. Hopefully they have been changed before and you don't have the original two piece ones.

    • @juanagudelo409

      @Just King Adrian Hey man, thanks for the reply! The original owner said that it does need a tune-up since the check engine light is on. I did do a scan on the truck, and it's telling me that a few cylinders are misfiring. I currently reside in NY. I found a guy who will do the job for me (parts not included) for bout $130. I think that's a reasonable price, to be honest. I had 1 shop try to charge me $500 without parts being included... I just looked at them and laughed.

      Just fyi... you REALLY need to replace the factory oil pump in order for this engine to be reliable. And based on that dieseling, you're going to have to replace your cam phasers as well. Melling makes an upgraded pump for this truck that solves this motor's Achilles heel! The problem is, the entire timing system, from cam phasers for the vvt, to solenoids, to timing chain tensioners, all run off of oil pressure and the factory pump is terrible! It won't hold pressure because the back plate on the pump flexes when warm and under pressure, leaking oil out the back and dropping the oil pressure below what is necessary for proper operation. When you get your timing chain cover off, don't be surprised if you find your tensioners have failed and your timing chain guides are broken. Every 5.4 owner should replace the oil pump, timing chains, timing chain guides and tensioners, cam phasers, and solenoids. Only the Melling pump needs to be name brand or OEM, at least in my experience. Probably $600 or so in parts, a couple days labor for a novice, and all you'll hear for the next couple hundred thousand miles.... is the faint clicking of valves opening and closing, and the big ass fan! Lol.

    I really hope we can get this up-voted so more people can read it! THIS MOTOR CAN BE AMAZING! However, if you do any repairs on the timing system without replacing the oil pump.... you're throwing your money away! In fact.... if you buy this truck and don't replace the oil pump..... you're throwing your money away! The timing system runs off of oil pressure and the factory pump is absolute trash and doesn't hold pressure! You NEED the upgraded Melling oil pump!

      Do you recommend the dealer to do the upgrade or a local mechanic?

    • @thomcasey2005
      @thomcasey2005 2 місяці тому

      You don't absolutely have to replace the oil pump. If the motor was taken care of before, with oil changes done as they should be, with the proper oil, and the timing chain guides never came apart, then the pump will run forever. I have seen these motors with well over 300k miles with the original oil pump. The problem is when people use the wrong oil, or let it run low, then the oil pump wears out.
      As for dealer or mechanic replacement, either can do it. I have two sons that are Sr and Master Ford tech's. Ford can no longer get the factory oil pump for either the 4.6 or 5.4. Shops are ordering and installing the Melling HP pumps.

    • @jakemiller4089
      @jakemiller4089 2 місяці тому +1

      It's not that the oil pump wears out, it's that the back panel on the oil pump flexes and allows oil to escape, lowering pressure. Replace the oil pump and obviously do your maintenance and you'll get way more than 300k miles out of the motor

    • @michaelbageant6068
      @michaelbageant6068 2 місяці тому

      Yup, you are absolutely correct! The Melling oil pump is a necessity if you want the engine past 200k. Fordtechmakuloco has great videos on all the engine work you will ever need to do. Most of it is easy enough for a person to do especially if you have a local hobby shop at your local military base.

      @@gofishinginternational1865 I'm being 100% honest here. I take care of my truck; change the oil on time, etc, etc, and I've never had a problem with it. I bought it in 2015 with about 120k miles in it, and about a year later it ran a bit rough. My mechanic told me he thought the spark plugs needed replacing which they should've been at 100k miles. So, I replaced them and everything smoothed out. I now have new, hotter ignition coils, a larger throttle body, and a larger MAF. Next I'm upgrading the exhaust to True Dual exhaust with long tube headers with an X pipe and Dynomax Turbo Mufflers -- after that it's just some new paint. 😎

    I just bought an '07 with 145k miles and decided to do the full bulletproofing with all upgraded timing, lifters, tensioners, lash adjusters, water pump, you name it. It ended up costing me a decent amount because I had a family mechanic do all the work, but the peace of mind is worth it (so far). There's still some things I need to chase down like my horn not working and my ABS/E-Brake light on and the cats are fouled from a misfire that I fixed. So far, the truck is comfy on a road trip and budgeting gas before a long trip makes it a lot easier to swallow the terrible fuel economy and just enjoy the comfort of the truck.

      Nice rig! Regarding the CAT, if its semi-clogged you lose power AND use more gas. Lots of $$$. But before you buy replacement cat converters, look at aftermarket exhaust systems. I've seen full dual-exhaust systems WITH CATs for less than a new factory CAT replacement. Less $$$, more power, less gas, its a no-brainer if you can find an exhaust kit for your vehicle.

Took Fordtechmakuloco and did the timing job, lifters, oil pump, water pump. Truck runs great now, sounds new. I am always replacing spark plugs, but not a big deal. I agree with all your comments and especially your compliments. Drives and handles much better than my 2000 expedition. I sometimes get envious about newer trucks, and legitimately so, but I would hate to not be as pleased overall as I have been with this one. My mechanic just recently replaced all timing parts and said he was skeptical about the mileage. When he got into the engine, he was so impressed and surprised that the inside was still so clean and in great shape. He even sent me pics. lol. That was at 320k. I have a 2006 quad cab with the 5.4 engine. I bought it used a few years ago with 145k miles on it. All from the original owner who was meticulous with maintenance. It now has 180k. When I bought it I had the spark plugs swapped out to avoid the common issue of spark plugs freezing in the block and then breaking off when you try to remove them. From what I have read, the engine reliability issues stem from poor maintenance (oil changes) as the chain guides and phazers are sensative to oil quality. The recommended oil is 5w-20 but most people use 5w-30 as the recommended thinner oil was used to meet MPG numbers. Apart from replacing a few suspension components, I have had no issues with the truck at all. Prior trucks were Chevys that would have been fine, but the Active Fuel Management in the engines causes premature wear and the 4L60E transmissions used in the trucks blowing up after 100k miles.

When it gets back I’ll install seat cover replacement for the front seats, they are like the factory material and should match, we will see. My decision came down to pricing a new truck to replace my truck or rebuilding it bring it back to like new, one feature I like now is Apple car play, so switching out the radio gave me that, there is a rear camera that comes with the new radio, so I’ll install that when I get the truck back from the body shop. I’ll take some pictures and send you.
    I looked at your headlight and taillight switches and gave them some serious thought, but think I’ll go with simple stock headlight replacement, they are faded, and the tail lights still look good.

    I purchased a 2005 Lariat brand new. I am the only driver it has ever had. It has 208,000 miles on it. It still has the original starter, water pump, reverse light, tail lights, and transmission, among other things. The truck is running so good, l will not buy a new one. All the talk about 5.4 liter is a bad Engine, Mines purrs like a kitten.

    I have a 2006 with 138k on it, body and interior still in great shape, just had the phasers worked on and it wasn’t a cheap fix ($3200) but still cheaper than buying a whole used/new truck. Overall it still is a good truck and don’t plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.

    I have a 2005 FX4 with over 200000 miles. Bought it from my son with 5000 miles. Great motor, transmission went out at 180000 miles. The best thing about this truck is no oil leaks at all. Gas mileage, about 10 miles per gallon.

      I have a ‘09 S/crew FX4 5.4 3V with 110,000 on it that I bought new. I’ve maintained it well and it still runs quietly and goes between oil changes without using a drop of oil. However I get 17 mpg in everyday driving and 20 highway driving, I’m pretty happy with that.

    That's one SHARP-LOOKING TRUCK, man!! Great video. Thanks!
    I have an 03 Sport Trac XLT 4WD, but only V6 engine. It's a solid rig, but liimited towing, and I bought a bigger trailer.
    So got an 07 Mountaineer (Explorer) with the 4.6 3V for cheap with 233k miles on it. Can tow 7200 pounds! Pickups were just too much money, and it will only be used for towing (so limited use ... also have a '92 VW T4 1-ton DOKA (crew cab), 93 Benz 300CE Cabrio, '14 Jetta TDI Highline/SEL, and '13 Acura RDX AWD ... I need to sell a few maybe).
    Anyway, Mercury 4.6 carfax showed owners were religious on oil-changes and maintenance, so it sounded good, and drives like a new rig. But, apparently they didn't use the gas-pedal much, because giving a test-run after some maintenance work, after the tach hit 6,000 RPM, the check-engine light came on. Runs rough, mis-fire codes on 1 cylinder, and that one is down to 90 PSI compression :(
    I'm thinking they never let rev, and it built up a ridge in the cylinder, so the first time I maxed revs, and the pistons/rods get to "stretch their legs" the ridge cracked the top compression ring. So, need an old-school "ring and valve job" -- but nobody does that anymore (they would do those rebuilds of the normal wear components without removing the engine, just pulling heads and dropping the pan ... way cheaper than a full rebuild). Low mileage used engines are CA$2k and up. I found a higher mileage (241k kms = 150k miles) at a wrecker who will sell it for $750 with a (short) warranty. Hmmmmmm
    With 230+ thousand miles on it, I'm thinking get the cheap engine, then pull the cover and put in new guides, and also install the HV (high volume) Melling oil pump: M340HV.
    New plugs for the ones that can be replaced. If a plug is stuck, I'll just leave it in -- avoid breakage.
    And maybe a new intake because plastic engine parts suck!
    QUESTIONS:
    Timing CHAINs: while doing new guides, guess I should put new chains in? What about sprockets? Probably only change if worn. But should also put new tensioners in too, right?
    Does anyone sell a "timing kit" with all of that?
    INTAKE: I'd rather replace plastic with metal, but how much more $$$ for an aluminum intake manifold?
    CAM: Anyone have experience with a cam change for towing? (generally, more torque at mid-range, rather than a performance cam that's maximizing peak power at higher RPM). Any recommendations?
    WHAT ELSE? Again, not a daily. Just pulling the trailer. Hopefully to Texas or Mexico for the winter :)
    PS: Trailer's GVWR is 7k pounds, but its 4200 empty, and even with a motorcycle in it I'll likely be running around 5500 pounds. Not close to the 7200 pound towing limit.
    Thanks in advance for suggestions.

    You're going to find pros and cons for any truck you buy but from what I have been hearing with the newer trucks. The older trucks are better. The new trucks are poorly put together, they have so many electrical issues, transmission problems. I think I remember Ford had recalls on the new trucks starting on fire. I think if you find a truck you like and it needs a few things, you should buy it, especially if it's a 2004. I've seen older trucks like a Chevy SUV 1984 with the classic box frame , which was a 4 speed manual for $8k and someone bought it a few months after I looked at it. Not all trucks that are decked out are always great. Sometimes getting the truck with the bare essentials can be a gem. Great truck!

It does need some TLC but i'm ok with it i've had older cars in the past so if something needs work i'm willing to pay for it or work on it myself. Dear Mr. Adriaan, thank you very much for your video that is highly relevant to me as a new owner of a 2004 Ford F-150 Lariat,5.4, V8 4x4. This summer I bought this 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck to commute to school next year and haul some stuff from time to time. My family of four have a Toyota Camry that we use for privacy. Next year I will take computer courses at a Technical College near us in our neighborhood. I am new to Ford vehicles, and I did not want to pay for another car payments again. I just wanted to pay and own this truck right away. Like you, I bought the pickup truck with, more or less, 200,000 miles on it. I am planning to drive less than 50 miles per month to commute to college because most of the courses that I will enroll in will be online. So far, have you encountered problems with your Ford F-150 other than those issues that you discuss in this video? In your video, you refer to crate engines, and what are those crate engines for these types of Ford pickup trucks? Dr. Friedrich Kustaa
