I wish I had the knowledge and skills to be able to fix a car like you did in to this Escort. I imagine I could save ton of money fixing my own car. I thank you for this video, It was completely interesting from the beginning to end. First video of this kind I've enjoyed, so thank you again from Shelton, Washington.
I’ve rebuilt 5 of these little 2.0 sohc escort motors. That one was dangerously close to busting a hole in the cylinder liner. I’ve had to sleeve two blocks due to that happening. Once you get the head rebuilt and hardened seats put in it will never have a problem again.
Yes it was a miracle that the cylinder wall wasn't damaged. Sometimes you just get lucky. That motor is still running like a champ and will probable outlast the rusty body it's in. Ray
Dwight, I've got an Escort w/same problem- plan to take it to repair garage- will tell about them about valve seat(s) issue, but how can I ensure new head w/"hardened" or "steel" valve seats were used?
I have a 2003 dohc that dropped a valve seat on a 35K original miles and ate #3 cylinder Tempted to rebuild with parts here and there is there a guarantee the head will never drop another seat if done properly? I hear so many options hate to junk it and its a rare all black ZX2
@@TejasToolMan you can repair the block . A good machining shop can put a standard bore sleeve therefore fixing that cylinder. If hardened valve seats are used in the head it won’t drop again.
The exact plan for my 02 sedan. I’ve gotten my head from CHI and took off the old one. Notorious cylinder 4, definitely going to rebuild a piston or 2 as cylinder 2 had low compression but it appears undamaged.
@@RayJay Thank you for the reply. I bought a car with this same engine that spits out about a 1qaurt of oil through the breather tube into the air filter. I think they call that 'blow by'? My son and I are about to pull the head to see what's going on.
@@RayJay Thanks for reply. One thought: so I am guessing broken piston pieces just kind of swooshed around crankcase without doing damage? Pretty impressive!
@@crichhawk9284 Once the piston exploded I assume the engine stopped rotating at that point so all the little pieces just fell into the oil pan. That's how I found them after dropping the pan. Ray
All of my rocker arm bolts came out without any problems. I imagine that it'll be difficult to get the broken bolt out of the head. Sorry that I couldn't be much help. Good luck
Very shoty refurbished head, I knew there was trouble when I saw that they painted over all the oxidation. With these 91 and up 1.9s & 2.0s it's best to have new seats inserted into the existing head if you can, the seats are far less likely to drop if a shop puts new ones in. There's no guarantee the "refurbished" heads have new seats so that new head might last 200,000 miles or only 20,000 miles.... Switching over all the rockers, lifters, and camshaft doesn't take much time. You have to adjust the rockers anyway if the head came with lifters - and refurbished heads often need the lifters pulled apart and cleaned or replaced because they sit on the shelf for eons dry (rusty) or pumped up (must be bled).
I used a large socket that was a little smaller than the cam journals and wrapped it with double sided tape and 600 grit sandpaper. Using a long extension to get to the back of the head and rotated the socket by hand in each of the journals. Ray

Ray Jay they are good little motors once you put hardened seats.
Take care

Good luck to you. I hope that everything works out.
at 3:17 there is a turquoise and purple seal of some type then at 11:52 before you put the new head on it's missing. Was that a critical part?
I used that rubber plug to seal off an oil gallery well I cleaned the top of the engine block.

@@bonegrubber That's some serious blow by! Let me know what you find. Ray
Helpful information....have the same problem as you, still weighing the options.
Repairing it is affordable if you do all the labor but it'll take many hours of dirty work to get it done. Let me know if I can help. Good luck, Ray

The intake butterfly valves are the intake manifold runner control they open above 3000 rpm over 5 seconds.
Was the place in Wisconsin Speedway Recyclers?
Yes--I think it was!
Hood day sir... Just wanted to find out how u removed the rocker arm bolts from the head.. As 1 of mime has broke and need to replace it

Nice!! I have a 97 had to do the same work also it was fun lol
How did u clean the cam journal?

5 years later how is the car?
It was sold about 3 years ago so I'm
not sure if it's still running.
