Yep! I have a 97 escort same issue 2.0spi wasn't sure if I was gonna keep her but I went to work on it pretty much rebuilt the whole engine got another rebuilt head with new and improve valve seats, she first blew up in 2010 now it's 2018 she still running! What a nitemare to get her going again lol!
it's good to have you back lol . Good video really tough job I've been working on a fastener that snapped when changing the fluid in the transmission. What a nightmare it's been trying to drill out. It's been two weeks now and I finally got it done. But good to see you back with us...
Yup i believe it, most of the hard parts in this engine have near 300,000 good engine, some lasted the life of the car however many more failed unfortunately
Thank you friend for this great video. I just recently bought a 93 like this one, it has 93 thousand miles on it, it didn't come with a egr. Have you ever heard of a non egr head doing this? It runs great, but I still worry sometimes. LOL. Thanks!
Thank you for the compliment, after time it becomes second nature, i can do these 1.9's and 2.0's in my sleep lol he still believe in 3,000 mile service, main reason its so clean, if this seat didn't fail the internal look like new many mile remaining on this engine, thanks again
i learned a great deal about my 94 lx wagon 1.9 .the economy has forced me to become a mechanic to my aging ailing escort. i almost gave up when problems occurred with the inertia switch. i just learned how to find trouble codes with an engine running test with out the costly o.b.d test meter. Is there any way to reset the c.e.l. without that tool too? after fixing the trouble of course? anyway this was a good thing you did
I have a 95 1.9 I initially occurred a tapping noise like this , currently I pulled the head & got the head resurfaced a crack welded on the head & new valves , I re assembled the motor and it still is making ticking noise, I know it’s hard to diagnose the problem if you’re not in person, but I just would like your knowledge before tearing into it and dumping a whole lot more money into the vehicle.
Tyrell Zimmerman thank you for trusting my judgment and reaching out. Like you mentioned it’s very hard to draw any conclusions without seeing it however I would suggest checking the cam lobs and all involved.. I have have the roller rockers fail on these in addition to the the tapets or lifters. Is the noise most definitely in the top end? For what it’s worth I will put this out there however if you choose to do so do at you own risk lol for a lack of better words please be careful. Oil will most definitely leak and also moving parts. I would pull the valve cover and isolate the noise if all else fails.
Its an aluminum head with a pressed in seat, im guessing over time heating and contracting the become brittle/crack or loose, at that point its a ticking time bomb,
I think I have the same problem my motor has about 250K on it and has never been rebuilt. Started making a noise yesterday. I dont know if it is worth the cost of repair, I dont have time to do a job this big.
I’ve found over the years two things, one is these engines love regular oil changes and two is the like being kept cool three is drive them easily and don’t abuse them these ones never dropped their valve seats
Thanks so much for your very good instructions. I have got all the way) to the point of removing the cylinder head bolts (and everything else). But the head is stuck to the block. Won't budge. Any suggestions ?
How many miles on this car total? you mentioned rebuilding the motor 4 yrs/100,000 miles ago. girlfriend has a 1995 Mercury Tracer Trio, with a 1.9 L one owner 125,000 or so. we replaced the timing belt and water pump as a precautonary measure about 7,000 miles ago. I think its interesting to see how things go together
mines not doing that, its not getting power to the coil or the fuel pump. what do you recommend, ive replaced the altenator, the coil, the fuses, the ingition relay, the ecm, the plugs and wires, the temp reader sensor, not sure what to do
Great format, Will. What a backward design! Why would the engineers design the valve seats as a two part system? Why didn't they just machine the seats into the head? Or, is this done so that the head can be made of soft aluminum but the seat has to be harder steel....
I have a 94 lx and it seems to have a miss when it is cool, and then 10 seconds later it disappears. Should I expect it to be a valve? Should I probably do a compression check?
ok my 94 ford escort makes the exsact same noise and i had the whole uper head rebuilt and the pistons liiked perfect but it still makes the noise and number 3 cylinder has no compression so what could be the issue?
It's awful how manufacturers integrate everything meaning you have to pull completely unrelated parts to get to the problem. My '93 Escort runs like crap on cold starts but will smooth out after about 10 seconds. Hope it's not a head gasket seeping then stopping when engine heat seals it off...ugh.
Hello.i have one question hope somebody help me.cylinder head oficina ford escort 1996 automatic 1.9 it is same than manual?because i found only manual ford escort 1.9 and mine is automatic.
I thought the 1.9 wasn't an interference engine? The 1.8 in the GT was. I thought they became interference engines in 1997 when they increased horsepower and displacement.
fastfords4me The problem wasn't interference... the valve itself wasn't in contact with the piston. The seat where the valve head rests to seal the combustion chamber (when closed) physically disconnected from the head and dropped down into the cylinder. Not a good picture. The split port Ford's are notorious for dropping the valve seats. I'm amazed I've not heard of a recall. Ford should pay for this, regardless of age.
George Culpepper Yeah, just ignore all the damage caused by a piece of metal beating around inside the cylinder where it doesn't even have room to fit at TDC.
I did a head on one of these last year, they are not to bad to work on at all.
That's why I like inline engines.
Thanks for the video Will.

Love the videos man! The speed and confidence you show are an inspiration! Keep em coming!
Thanks for clarifying i drew a blank at the time, had that set many years along with others, this set is by far my the best i own
Yep! Thank you, your correct its an aluminum head wouldn't withstand the abuse for long so they use a harder seat
called quick disconnects, great tool set to have for fuel/A/C lines, have them myself and love them
I will do more than leave feedback; I will INSTANTLY subscribe because your videos kick-ass. Thank you for everything that you do, Man.
Thank you for the compliment, im very comfortable behind a wrench, thanks again will do
Thanks for taking us along Will, interesting video as always :)
I put on a good front lol im sure you do, just takes some time and hands on to bring it out, thank you for the compliments
I agree the owner has 3 of them, i had to fix some rust on this one a few years back
Yup i believe it, most of the hard parts in this engine have near 300,000 good engine, some lasted the life of the car however many more failed unfortunately

Like to see the rest of the removal and repaired process

he still believe in 3,000 mile service, main reason its so clean, if this seat didn't fail the internal look like new many mile remaining on this engine, thanks again
They were good little cars back in the day, like you mentioned if you could keep a head on it
i learned a great deal about my 94 lx wagon 1.9 .the economy has forced me to become a mechanic to my aging ailing escort. i almost gave up when problems occurred with the inertia switch. i just learned how to find trouble codes with an engine running test with out the costly o.b.d test meter. Very quick teardown
Tracker. Great little Car. I have owned 5 of them. I would still be driving one but the rust up here makes it almost impossible to find.
can that dropped valve seat be prevented, or is just inherent to the Escort
I agree compared to most this is not bad at all, your welcome

Great video, thanks for posting
I had a 98 escort with the 2.0 it is not that different from the 1.9, But my 2.0 lasted well over 100,000 miles and 13 years no engine trouble ever.
The 2.0 engines have the same problem. I just lost my Escort because of it.
Juan how many miles did you have on your escort?
Thanks so much for your very good instructions. I have got all the way) to the point of removing the cylinder head bolts (and everything else). But the head is stuck to the block. Won't budge. Any suggestions ?

Woulda taken me 3 days to do this, good job
Okay thanks for the video I have a good question is this cylinder head rebuildable? If not can it be used as a core return?
Near 300,000 its been in the guys family since new
mines not doing that, its not getting power to the coil or the fuel pump. what do you recommend, ive replaced the altenator, the coil, the fuses, the ingition relay, the ecm, the plugs and wires, the temp reader sensor, not sure what to do

Your welcome, will do
that's about right counting machine shop time and parts
What causes the valve seat to drop on the 1.9?
thx robin!!very helpfull video!!!keep going!!!!
With hopes it will purr like your picture
Will there be another vid on this?
be interested in the outcome of this

That's exactly how my car sounded but a lot worse I shut it off immediately.. 2001 escort 90 K miles..
Many more
Hello.i have one question hope somebody help me.cylinder head oficina ford escort 1996 automatic 1.9 it is same than manual?because i found only manual ford escort 1.9 and mine is automatic.

Correct its gas
Plenty of practice
quicker to just remove the spark plugs and use a magnet......
George Culpepper Yeah, just ignore all the damage caused by a piece of metal beating around inside the cylinder where it doesn't even have room to fit at TDC.
