Let's build a Panther D Tank in Field Workshop (Tamiya 1/35) step by step

- This step by step video is about how I built my Tamia Panther D in 1/35th scale for an upcoming field workshop diorama, and pimp it with different scale model techniques, interesting stuff and ideas.
This german scale model tank was most complex tank model I ever built. In the past I used to build my models more out of the box, with few additional items like bigger pe parts. So here were a lot of first times for me like removing casted welds with a scribing tool and create custom weld beads and tarps with green stuff, applying amored texture using Tamiya Basic Putty and plastic cement, applying Zimmerit in square tile pattern using Tamiya Smooth Surface, and using photo etched parts from ET Models to the smallest pieces. Soldering PE parts is also part of this list.
Not the first time but also part of this video is creating battle damage using Vallejo Plastic Putty, a PanzerArt resin track and twisting electric cabels for creating towing ropes. From MiniArt came some jerry cans, and an MG42 ammunition box from Voyager Model to make this scale model even more unique.
I hope this step by step guide is helpfull for one or two of you and I can show some techniques for beginners and veterans. Please let me know what you think about it. I just finished a build where I mated a Tamiya D with a Tamiya G to make an A model and I can both feel your "pain" as well as your satisfaction! I used a few parts from a Dragon A model that is an excellent kit in itself, and have been left with enough parts where I plan to build a very destroyed Panther. Mainly I used the rear exhaust parts because the A calls for the two small and two large exhausts as well as the side skirts. I put lights in the turret, as well as the driver's controls and the radio. Both of these are barely seen through the hatch but well worth the trouble. You have more courage than I do, I used zimmerit from Atak and did make my own zimmerit to make the zimmerit pieces where the sheets fit or rather did not fit together. That was because I used zimmerit for another brand A model. Rather than try to make my own clean rod holder, I used Heavy Hobby's 3D printed set and for the track holders I used Tiger Model Design's track holder with Trex Studio tracks with cleats. For those tiny chains and pins I used very small chains and bent thin copper wire. One comment, the track holders were mastered by Karl VanSweden for Tiger Model Designs and has several parts which are not included in any other holder sets. Karl is a master researcher and included what he found in his master. If you do a Panther in the future, please see if you can find a set of Tiger Model Designs! At the end of the build and painting, I used foliage from AK Interactive and an Italian company which I do not have the name for right now. If I find it I will look this video up again and edit it to include the name.
Well that sounds also like a very time consuming project, but very cool details like the light in the turret👍 thanks for the hint with the parts brand, I will check them out👌 the Italian diorama company is most likely Diorama Presepe, they have a lot great products like the ones you mentioned👌

😅 Vielen Dank Marco🙏 ja das war wirklich eine anstrengende Erfahrung, aber auf jeden Fall die Mühe wert. Aber grade die Erfahrung mit den PE Teilen wäre sehr viel negativer ausgefallen wenn ich deine Kleber plus Aktivatorspray nicht gehabt hätte🙏 die haben es dann doch vereinfacht. Jetzt noch ein paar Tage Mut sammeln und dann kommt Farbe drauf😉

What you need is a round PE bending tool. There are many and they work like a dream. Especially on those front fenders and the tool holder. That will make life so much easier.
The ET Models PE parts are the best you can get. I built a Tiger I with them in much the same way, except in a smaller scale. After all that work it’s always extremely painful to cover it up with primer. There’s something esthetically pleasing about such a nice shiny tank.
That being said, I think it will look brilliant painted up. Cheers, Any.
Yes I am sure the round bending tools are very helpful, but they aren't cheap too, and I wasn't ready to pay that yet😅 it's already painted and finished, so you can already see the result on my channel👌🤗

Fantastic build. I found this as I searched for photo etched side skirts for a panther. I am just about to start trying to do P.E sides skirts for a Tamiya Panther Ausf A. First time seriously using photo etched parts and absolutely dreading it

A very nice build! Have done putty zimmerit twice, I found a moist finger or thumb is a very fast way to spread the putty out.

Excellent looking build. I'm not a big fan of tanks, i prefer more unusual vehicle, but theres something about Panthers that appeals. i also like using Uncle Nightshift's techniques and you've done a superb job

Nur eine Kleinigkeit möchte ich anmerken und die hat eigentlich nix mit dem Modellbau zu tun :
Mit der Stockwinde konnte man nicht den ganzen Panzer amheben um Laufrollen abzubauen. Sondern nur einen einzelnen Schwingarm um die daran befindliche/n Laufrollen abzubauen.
Bei den Pz. 3&4 z.B. gab es einen Adapter der in die Löcher der Laufrollen gesteckt wurde und an dem dann diese angehoben wurde. Danach kam ein Holzklotz unter den Schwingarm. Die Stockwinde kam weg und dann konnte man die Laufrolle abbauen.
Ansonsten 👍👍👍
Mir fehlt mittlerweilen die Geduld für solche Ätzteilorgien und auch das Augenlicht lässt leider mit zunehmendem Alter zu wünschen übrig 😢

Ja die Stockwinde, ist wohl eher weniger korrekt so, vllt mehr als optisches Highlight gedacht, und weniger zum komplettem anheben des Panzers als zur Stabilisierung. Ich denke mir immer, solange keiner das Gegenteil beweisen kann das etwas mal genau so gestanden hat, ist es immerhin möglich das mal irgendwo irgendwann eine Stockwinde so platziert war😉

You did a fantastic job! Especially considering how ambitious this project was, with so many first time applications. I think PE, is important to work with, for not only gaining experience, and skills, but also to see if it’s something you want to incorporate into future projects. At first, I enjoyed the challenge of PE, despite being very frustrating at times. Currently though, my opinion is 80% of PE, isn’t worth the time, effort, and money, when you consider the results, and impact it has, versus plastic parts. Resin bits, are far better in my opinion, although they are fiddle and fragile, and add up, when you start buying all the sets, for different models. I personally think, that texture, is EXPONENTIALLY more impactful, important, visually interesting, etc. ( weld beads, rolled steel, cast steel, flame cuts, etc. ) And out of the box, build, with a great deal of effort, put into texture, will always look far better in my opinion, than a fully super detailed kit, with no texture, or poor attempts at textures. 🤷♂️ Anyways, that’s my thoughts. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to seeing it painted and weathered

This here was just a build to get the experience and learn if I enjoy it, see if I can do it. Texture and welds are definitely more fun and easier, so I will combine these techniques with more printed parts in the future 👌

Really awesome build, just one advice, you can use debonder to clean your brush after aplying putty, IT cleans brushes even moře good then regulace glue

@@biberhunter_scale_models you're welcome, it's really usefull even if you need clean some parts of kit after using gray Tamiya putty, for example after puttying some scratches or cracks. You can smooth the surface around it without sanding.

Thank you, happy to hear🙏😊 I didn't found a tool for square tile Zimmerit, only for the waffle pattern. So I had to use knifes. Do you know tools for square tile patterns?
Apply heat to surface you need soldered together. And add the solder while heating the surface
Yeah I am definitely no soldering expert, but thankfully it all sticked together and was very strong🤞😁

Great video great skills. Just wondering why you put armour texture on and then covered it with zimmerit?
Thank you🙏 yes, to be quicker you could save that step, but the putty has a better grip on the texture than on the smooth plastic, and at places where the zimmerit is chipped of or not applied perfectly, the texture will be visible and the tank is looking a bit more interesting. But basically it could be done without texture, probably one of the things that let's us sleep better because we know it's done😅

Thank you🙏 yes this would be a way too, the putty dries out rock hard and is very durable, so both ways work I guess.
One feedback: Keep the music running at a low volume instead of breaking the music every 3 seconds, I found it very disturbing...

Sehr schönes Video und tolles Ergebnis. Eine Frage hätte ich......was sind das für Ketten die du verwendet hast bzw welche empfiehlst du ?
Vielen Dank🙏 die Ketten sind von Panzerart, aus Resin mit Pins die in die Seiten gesteckt werden. Die sind nicht schlecht, gut detailliert und schnell gebaut, nur die Pins sitzen teilweise etwas lose. Metallketten wären meine erste Wahl gewesen, waren aber nicht zu kriegen oder nur von weit weg, was mir zu teuer gewesen wäre. Also kann ich mit der Lösung gut leben👌

@@hamacreeative muss ja nichts schlechtes sein👍 ich hatte bloß noch nie lust die Plastikketten zusammenzusetzen😅 mit dem Kit kamen Einzelgliedketten von Tamiya, aber die waren nach der Montage nicht sehr beweglich und hatten pro Glied zwei Injector Pinmarks was sehr ärgerlich war. Darum Resin Ketten.

I do like your work but I think a lot of modelers are too fixated on these welds and textures instead of what these things are like in real life
Thank you, happy to hear🙏 yes you got a point there. I think it's a lot to make the model more optically interesting. It's the same with rust on a tank. More likely not very realistic, but it looks good and gives it a more metal like look. Maybe the only tanks where strong texture and welds are realistic are old soviet ones, but we apply it on every tank to get a few more extra details.

Don't get me wrong I do use alot of these new techniques in both armour and aircraft models, and I am by no means a detail or realism freak 🤣🤣🤣 anyway I really enjoy your videos and appreciate the skills you have...
