@@ryanwilliams6526 I agree - they can be a real pain if they get clogged. The Italian tune-up method works well, as it allows the DPF to heat up and properly burn off all the crap. @@ryanwilliams6526 honestly, no, dpf's are waaaaaay less of a pain in the ass than EGR Systems, this comes from someone who exclusively works on diesels, we rarely get clogged DPF's, but we see clogged intakes and EGR systems all the time.

Brilliant result. Bella lives on, and drives like she should. Bravo to Lucas Oils EGR and Turbo Cleaner and your good selves. Also, to the mobile mechanic for pointing the finger to the problem.
I had a Zafira turbo diesel run away on me once, when the turbo oil seals failed... it was indeed quite frightening at first but I was able to drop it in to top gear, drop the clutch and stand hard on the brakes, which killed it. Then there was just the matter of waiting 2 hours to recover me from just outside Basingstoke. Fortunately it was a company car, and was soon fixed, and eventually racked up 250k miles before being sold!
You shaking the Berlingo to mix the magic juice with the diesel reminded me of an anecdote I once heard when working for major oil company, then one of The Seven Sisters. They'd had a substantial order for a particular blend of oil, but the blending machine was out of order. So they put the ingredients in the right quantities in a tank truck and drove it a few times round the refinery to blend it, then delivered it to the customer. I can not guarantee that it was a true story, but I could well imagine that it was.
A bit like running a two stroke M/C to mix the oil and petrol after parked up for a time. A neighbour was often spotted shaking his BSA Bantam on a winter morning when his car wouldn't start.
Another anecdote, same oil company as above, but no longer related to this video: They once built a refinery that had one single access road, somewhere in Greece. With a railway bridge over the access road. All went well until the first tanker came to pick up its load. But it would not fit under the railway bridge. So they had to dig out the road under the railway bridge before they could ship products from the refinery.
Surely Miss Hubnut is too young to remember Vision On? In case you're wondering, the music 'Left Bank Two' was used as the intro to the viewer gallery section.
Reminds me of winding my son when he was a baby and crying his eyes out. After a bit of patting on the back over my shoulder, suddenly you would get a massive burp and he'd be fast asleep.
Used a can of Turbo/EGR valve cleaner on my old Volvo C30 with the 2.0 hdi engine. It said hold the revs at 1500rom when using the spray. Had a big improvement.
So a scary diesel runaway redline from death did the trick! What I suggest whilst you have the injector cleaner in, is to the drive Bella like you stole her, really redline the engine and get those revs up, because diesel is notorious for producing particulates Given the age of Bella, it's likely that carbon build up in the EGR, plus injectors being a little clogged too that the engine was starved of fuel and air meaning it was missing The injector cleaner will clean the injectors and also the combustion chambers too, you may experience additional black smoke whilst that is occurring, I would perform an additional EGR cleaning after the injector cleaning has occurred, to remove any additional deposits that may come from the combustion chambers But I'm glad Bella is better than ever, YAY FOR BELLA!! ❤
Hi HubNut, I watched this video after causing engine runaway to my 2012 Volkswagen diesel Caddy by pouring way too much EGR cleaner into the intake at once. It was so scary. I wanted to chunder from anxiety! Watching your video while I left the car idle for 20 mins to slowly (and safely!) chug through the remaining liquid gave me some relief knowing I didn't have a unique experience... and after resetting the battery and leaving the car overnight, this morning I drove it with no engine light or limp mode! Lots of horrible smoke from the exhaust came out which I was quite chuffed to see, as I was quoted AUD$1200 to have the EGR replaced which I really wanted to avoid. Loved your video and your humour. I will be sure to add it to the cleaner fuel tank after my next oil change like you have in your follow-up video. Thank you! From Australia 😄
Nice one Ian and Carly. the planets in the constellation aligned and with some squirts of the magic potion and the fairy dust seems to have done the job with a bang. It's great to see Bella out and about on the road without the tummy trouble following the 'event' of terror. Many thanks for sharing.
So nice to come home late at night and be able to relax to this video after an intense week where I have had to take care of moving my mum home from temporary housing and also oversee psykiatric care for my brother while also trying to find a new job. Spending some time in the Hubnutverse is a much welcomed break. Great to see Bella back to fully functioning again, greetings from Denmark and my Ruthy the Wagon R+ and Claus the VW Caddy ;-)
To stop EGR issues, make sure you do more frequent oil changes. I can tell you from experience, sister's car, that 10k is far too long between changes.
I hate to be a sceptic but I think it’s the tank additive that’s given you the better running. I’ve gone through both processes independently on my VW. When I removed the EGR oily crud was 5mm thick all round, I cleaned it out by hand as the intake spray cleaner barely touched it but realised the turbo and intake valves were still going to be coated. Using tank additive does help give smother running and better economy. Thanks for another entertaining video, folks.🙂
I was sceptical initially but that really seems to have done the trick. Maybe spaying into the intake while holding a fast idle perhaps to avoid future run away scenarios? Thanks for the upload Ian
It is great that it worked for you. You must really be relieved that the engine is now working so well. It is likely no different than when I have removed a PCV from a gas engine and cleaned it out with degreaser. The issue is the build up of crud inside that stops it from functioning properly. It is nice that you were able to clean it without removing it. Glad there is a cleaner that actually does what it claims. Enjoy your new car!
I have actually done a full cleaning of the entire intake system of my 320d and what you find is dusty carbon (sooth) caked to the EGR valve, the intake manifold will have a coating of a tarry substance made of sooth(from EGR)+oil (from the sump ventilation). The intake ports and valves will also have a cake of carbon on them. After fixing all that i have sworn to never buy a diesel car again. Clean diesels don't exist. (Regardless of what VW used to claim.)
That severe knocking when the stuff is squirted in really makes my "mechanical sympathies" gland twitch! A horrible noise! Amazing result, glad its improved so drastically
Modern diesel intake manifolds often get coked up with carbon from the EGR unless they do long journeys. Your potions seemed to have done the trick! Well done! Love the Debbie Maggie demos of the product!
Never used egr cleaner but I have used injector cleaner on a 1994 tractor that was blowing black smoke and was hard starting. It worked so well that I did not change the injectors and since then put some in my four year old Mitsubishi L200 (which did not blow smoke) but it improved the running so much that I use it every ten tanks or so, the engine runs smoother and quieter using it, I have since used it on a chinese generator set that was blowing black smoke from new and it stopped that as well. So yes injector cleaner works.
Sounds like the egr valve was either stuck partially open or wasn't fully closing, so introducing exhaust gas to the inlet when it shouldn't! I can strongly recommend a diesel engine cleaner, JLM extreme clean. Use that every 6 months and it will clean and prevent accumulation of carbon and fuel residue throughout the intake, exhaust, fuel system and turbo, it really works well.
Excellent video as usual, I once witnessed a runaway on a Scania bin lorry, evacuated the workshop and waited until it blew to bits....that was scary 😮😮
I saw a daf 95 do the same but took a brave pill got the intake off covered in oil and blocked the intake which stopped the engine. This is why ASV valves are fitted to modern diesels
What a relief guys - at last it seems like a bit of good fortune, fingers crossed it is now cured of it's bucking -buck and miss ( to be honest I had to rewind and check as I thought you were a bit sweaty !)
On the basis that most of the solvent ought to get burnt going through the engine, before it gets to the EGR, I'm amazed that this works. Something new learnt.
The problem with the EGR on diesels is that the soot coming from the exhaust is mixed with the fine oil mist coming up the intake. This oil usually comes from the PCV - diesels have a lot of blowby that is returned in the intake airstream. Some have oil separators in the PCV, some don’t. Also, turbo seals might leak. Anyway, the oil mixed with soot makes for a nasty sludge that gets deposited on the EGR and in the intake.
Succes 🎉! Well done , for now!? Perhaps repeat the treatment in a while!? And miss Hubnut deserves an intence kiss of life! After that near death experience 😵!!! 😂😂😂 love you guys! 🏴 🇳🇱

In your short video of Bella this morning, i literally thought you had miss-fuelled her and she was trying to run on petrol. Now i know why! Going forward it may be worth regularly putting an additive in the tank or filling with premium fuel once in a while.
I've always done that with a few revs held on the engine, it stops that awful bogging down noise and it takes the cleaner through the system, rather than letting it sit as yours did.
Its great that you have identified the cause of issues. I would be looking at taking the intake off and giving it a complete clean out bet its suffocating.
Glad Bella seems to be better, the EGR must have been a bit dirty / sticky, rather than absolutely caked in carbon, as even soaking in a bucket of petrol doesn't always work, without manual intervention, on really coked up parts.
