Hello Stacey ... Ren has an effect on people that is indescribable. We all cried with you ...
Ren's cameraman (Samuel Perry-Falvey) is an artist in his craft as well and helps these productions immensely. This trilogy is a tough one, emotionally. I think it is so powerful because it openly discusses generational domestic violence. We all know it goes on more than we would like to know, but it is hardly ever discusssed. This song was written in two parts. Jenny's Tale and Screech's Tale were written first ... Ren found it incomplete, and a couple of years later he wrote Violet's Tale to tie them together into a true Shakespearean Tragedy. His song writing is incredible and you will notice the correlation of Jenny who was silent, like her mother Violet, and Screech was violent like his father (Stevie or Violet's father?)
I am glad you are taking the traditional "path" of introduction to Ren. Your next "emotional" reaction should be "Ren X Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines (live)" which will introduce you to another incredible independent artist "Chinchilla". She is Ren's musical sibling (nothing romantic). She is a rabbit-hole of music worth exploring as well. Bring tissues ...
Ren does have some super "Fun" songs as well. If you want to see a different side of Ren I would suggest: Losing It, Power, The Hunger, Murderer. He can rap rap ... very well.
Your reaction was honest and raw and much appreciated ... much love!

First off, I want to thank you for posting your reaction to the Tales. ❤ Ren's music has opened up so many doors for open, non-judgmental discussion on VERY difficult topics. I've never seen anything like it, but the comments sections for reactions to Ren's music have become places where the Renegades have connected with and spread love, support, and strength to others through shared experience. I've seen well over 100 reactions to Hi Ren and The Tales over the past year, and I can say that your reactions are among my absolute favorite because you connect with both the music and your audience so naturally. Welcome to the Renegades, you are so very welcome here.

We can feel what he wants us to feel. It's unusual for me to feel connected to an artist through music and not the music through art. That's what makes Ren, so extraordinarily gifted. I love your honest emotional reactions to Ren. I had to sub to follow you on your journey down the Ren rabbit hole. You've had the tiniest of tastes of what he's capable of just watching the two songs. Ren has a number 1 album out in the UK. He's impossible to nail down to a single Genre. He's a master of hip-hop, rap, rock, punk, reggae, bardcore, ballads, and pop. His catalogue is pretty big and then he has amazing stuff with his former band (hopefully getting back together) The Big Push. He plays the electric and acoustic guitar (obviously), piano, drums, bass & the melodica. He produces his own beats, beat-boxes sings like an angel and writes as well as anyone I've ever listened to.
You've heard a couple of heavy emotional pieces. For fun songs, you should try Love Music #1, #2, #3 & #4. It's for songs all about how much he loves music. Losing It is a fun one as well. For heartfelt ballads, try his 2 collaborations with Chinchilla, How To Be Me (live) and Chalk Outlines (live) For a rock song try Fire. For hip-hop try Wicked Ways, Seven Sins and Lost All Faith. For Rap try Illest Of Our Time, Animal Flow, and The Hunger.
Oh and you can't miss the 2 songs Ren did with Eden Nash, Humble and Ocean.
There's tons more songs I didn't even bother listing. I haven't heard a single song that wasn't good.
I can't wait to see how shocked you are when you see other styles he does. I'm glad to have stumbled upon your channel. Peace and love.

  • @walkerig1
    @walkerig1 Місяць тому +1

IMHO the Tale of Jenny and Screech is a Three Act Shakespearian Tragedy, in the style of the wondering minstrel bard. Ren has self identified his music as bard core, so that is confirmed.
This is an ancient style of music; that goes right back through the wondering minstrel bards of the middle ages. The works of Chaucer sung in the Wife of Bath's ale house. And back to the Dark Ages of Anglo Saxon epic poetry of Beowulf, on through the Greek Homeric tales of The Iliad and The Odyssey and the beginning of the Choir.
This form of story telling probably goes all the way back to Ugg twanging his Bow to woo the Chiefs Daughter or complain about the Chief stealing the meat from his hunt, at the hut of the Widow Ale Wife, where he and others would congregate to let off steam and tell tales of epic hunts; to then draw on the local cave walls, like the graffiti in The Tales.
The music acted in part as interlude/intro as well as melodic emphasis and sound effects for the story. Also I think you spotted Ren's use of locational reverb in the sound engineering. They also got lucky with the Seagulls in part of the song which then was deliberately left in and emphasized in the mix.
All of that indicates the intellectual level of the performance production in this piece of art.

I read through a few comments, and didn’t immediately see anyone explaining a little more about Ren. This guy. He’s changed how I see music and songwriting and performing and music videos forever. And getting to know a bit more about him makes you appreciate his work even more. The guy has lived and experienced some difficulties that you have to know about to really understand what he’s doing. When he says in Hi Ren that he “spent half his life ill”, he’s taking about a battle with Lyme disease and misdiagnosis and the toll it took and continues to take on him. Read up a bit about his story. You won’t be able to react to every song he’s ever written, but, map out the next half dozen or so that you want to do, react to them, and then just let yourself listen to EVERYTHING else. He’s just so good. Can’t state enough how much he’s influenced the way I experience music for the last couple years. Glad you found Ren! Keep the videos coming!

Jenny's part was based on a newspaper article titled It's a Shame. He found it odd that it wasn't one the front page. It was a proustite killed by a 14 yrs old boy. He wrote Screech's part a couple years later and then Violet's part later to tie it all together.

Ren's life has really taken off and he's crazy busy right now. He's currently in Calgary, Alberta, Canada receiving treatments for Lyme Disease, the decade of misdiagnosis of which was the inspiration for his Hi Ren song. But now his album Sick Boi took off and reached the #1 spot, top album in the UK, beating out heavy hitter Rick Astley's newest release, all despite Ren not operating under a signed label and being completely independent! Not sure if that's ever been achieved before. Despite his treatments, and being overwhelmed by his recent success, he's still pumping out songs and videos!
With that said, in the first few months of Hi Ren making it's rounds with UA-cam reactors, Ren responded to just about every reaction video, thanking the creator for the video. I like to think, that if he weren't so busy now, and he found your reaction videos, he'd like them very much. ☺

Brilliant and heartfelt reaction, we've all been there with Ren!!
What you said about whether it is the story or the performance that made you cry, that is often how I feel with Ren but I think it is the performance for me as even some of his songs which aren't sad get to me like that. He is just a unique talent and it hits me in a way nobody else's music has.
Can't wait to follow as you go further down the Ren rabbit hole, there's so much more to see from him, you've already noticed his talent in different aspects but you still have loads more skills and talents to see.
Would love to see you react to one of his interviews that give more insight into his journey and the type of person he is as well, the interview with Zach Sang is a good one. Also the video he made for hitting one million subs is another good one for you to check out.

The 1st two were recorded together a few years before Violet's Tale. Initially based on a news report Ren had read about a couple of kids.
I wonder if you'll make the connection right away at the end...?
The big thing that sets Ren apart is the extent to which he acts: he doesn't just sing or speak his lyrics, he lives them. Dude would make a really good actor.

Great reaction to this. As someone else said, you have a good heart. It's endlessly nice to see people react to this like a human. I'm sure it's been said, but just in case - jenny and screech were brother and sister. After the death of their mother, the father wasn't around; whether that was because he abandoned them or he was in jail, they would have ended up in foster care. They likely had no idea the other ever existed, because record keeping while itself is already poor; it was equally poor at communicating pretty much anything about someone's roots.
Secondly, Screech's friend was with Screech's girlfriend. "For something far more sinister in mind, does await."
The basics of the story is true, iirc - at least the story of the mother and how she died and what her condition was. Maybe not twins, but she was pregnant. Her name was changed for the song, but she was real. I believe Ren said he read and remembered the story from a newspaper (?) Or perhaps an article online. He has a really great interview with Black Pegasus, and I think he also has one with The Charismatic Voice.

12:25 note how he looks around… the wailing song, sat on a bed with his knees up. I’m convinced he’s acting out the birth scene here. He loves connecting the start and end of his songs with small hints like that.

  • @reactivereplays5666
    @reactivereplays5666 2 місяці тому

I could write a book on just about every Ren song... These are a few things I like to mention sometimes.
Jenny's Tale you have to ask yourself what was a 14 year old girl wearing heels and "rosy cheeks" doing at night on a road "she walked a 1000 times before".

At the start of Screech's Tale, Ren starts the song by saying, "A story it starts at the end". Patrick was "missing" and Screech's GF was "Busy" because they were together. Then at the end as Ren does so often he brings it full circle and says, "A story it ends at the start" .
Violate Tale - I LOVE the guitar rifts throughout the ENTIRE song. Ren so often does, he plays the part of Violate here on the bed after the rifts...
(Violate waking up looking around confused as to how she got here and where is here?) With haunting/eerie hymns he sets the stage.
Many catch the rewind . MANY more miss the speeding back up to real time when Ren/Violate wakes up on the table (After the fight between her and Stevie as he starts walking away).
    Lastly,
Violet moved out at 16 into a flat paid by a "welfare scheme". It is logical to think that violet was already pregnant by this time. A teenage runaway might have a chance at being a beneficiary of this but a pregnant teenage runaway certainly has the qualifications to be granted this benefit. This was before she met Stevie who most would assume was the father of Jenny and Screech. If what was speculated was true, Stevie did some maths and figured that the numbers didn't add up, the baby wasn't his. He beats up Violet and calls her a "slut" which was quite specific when compared to usual cuss words like "bitch" or "cunt". This would also answer as to why Stevie asked "Why're you lying to me, violet?" And would make the slightly off phrase "Do you think I wanna do this, Violet" fit more consistently into the story.

You've only seen one side of Ren, and he has so much more to discover. After the Tales, it's a good idea to see some of his lighter side. I *highly* recommend checking out a video with his band The Big Push titled, "I Shot the Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop" (Look for the thumbnail wit Ren in the *RED SUSPENDERS*), or something like a collab with Sam Thompkins titled "Earned It/Man's World/Falling". Both are Renegade favorites, and will really give you a different, lighter perspective of Ren. 😎

When I saw "Hi Ren" I mentioned your compassion and empathy. Watching THIS reaction takes my observation/compliment up several notches. Your obvious fascination during the performance, and your completely open and honest reaction make you a pleasure to watch. You say in your opening that you aren't a "music expert." You don't need to be. I (and others) can go to reactors WITH that expertise if we want to hear detailed dissection of vocal styles and musical 'stuff.' You offer a very different, and very appealing approach to reactions. You share YOU. That's much more engaging. Keep it up! you're doing great! Liked and subscribed. By the way, your emotional reaction literally brought ME to tears as well. That's rare. You have that "something special" about your!!

Your reaction to Violet's tale was like mine the first few times that I heard it. From the knock on the door it brings back dark memories... not knowing if you are going to get the kind loving person or the person who has been drinking and is easily angered. The fear of pretending to be asleep and it not working. And when he pinches her eyelids up it puts you in violet's tale. And it is not just your story but all of the other people you have talked to and supported who have experienced DV and all the tales merge into Violet's tale. Ren does such a good job at telling this story. When he became Stevie, he was scary. I've watched hundreds of reactions now and your reaction is one of only two that I felt truly understood the fear of that moment.
You would probably appreciate Romain Axisa, the guitar player that used to be part of Ren's band The Big Push, he has a different vibe but he gets completely lost in his music and while his music is beautiful, I just love to watch him get so absorbed and lost in it. It brings a little bit of light to a dark world when watching an artist like that. Ren is awesome and surrounds himself with incredible talent. Take care.

Great reaction Stacey, loved that one, its an emotional roller coaster the trilogy. You got through it ok..
And yes There was a boy who killed a young prostitute in London, later that same night he was shot by police. The leading officer investigating was quoted as saying to the press " its such a shame "
Part 1 and 2 we're made pretty close to each other, within the year i think.. Part 3 Ren penned some 2 yrs later, at no point was Ren thinking about making a tragic trilogy ,but fate made that happen.!!!
Maybe something a little lighter next time.. Some Big Push maybe. Or something of the Freckled Angeles album, " its alright " but that'll tear you up as well. Maybe just roll with Losing it, or What you want. Or for spitting bars full speed the Hunger. ❤❤👍👍🇬🇧🇫🇴🇬🇧
