As of today, I just found out that my absolute, hands down favorite Righteous Brothers song, just Once in My Life, was written by none other than Carole King and Gerry Goffin! It's a stunningly beautiful song, and it shouldn't be surprising that it was written by such a talented musical craftsman.
Great post, great song. I used to get scorned when I put this on the jukebox years ago. Did not chart well, but it’s Bill Medley’s favorite Righteous Brothers song. That’s good enough for me. Thank you Carole
I'm trying to come up with something snappy, but at the end of the day, she's a true genius, I once heard it's harder to write a pop song then anything else
Amazing , that they , husband and wife, wrote this song, extremely romantic, never have i heard, other than ashford and simpson, aintvno mountain high enough, write such meaningful songs about love, and the bondage of matrimony, im in tears right now! Someone get me a tissue!
she knew who she wrote for! up on the roof gets positively murdered by the drifters, aretha and natural woman?? even her monkees songs are perfect for the band. pure legend
Song is excellence .....but it was Phil Spector's mad genius studio production that made The Rightous Bros. version a spectacular listening experience!!!
What an awesome version of this song. I just found out Carole King & crew wrote this. There are two different versions of this demo. The other one has a little higher pitch as if it is sped up or, maybe this one is slowed down. Both are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes! And I love the way she's tailoring it for the R. Brothers. The Spector production, imo, drowned everything in echo. That worked for some songs, but not this masterpiece. Rock's greatest songwriter--no equal.
The genius of Carol King She's written more music for people than I can remember. The unsung hero behind a lot of pop music. I want to know how does she do it ?
She's rock music's great songwriter, hands down. And hugely influential (John Lennon named her as an influence on the Beatles, something that's obvious anyway). She learned her craft from Neil Sedaka, who was a great craftsman but no genius on Carole's level. She's snubbed by Rolling Stone, et al. Wanna bet gender is an issue?
ismarythere I would guess that as much as that - and her ethnicity and economic class (which would all go against the hard-life, self-taught, up-from-the-street mythology that rock craves) is her personal style. She's not 'cool.' To the contrary, she's open, warm, affective and genuinely caring about the people around her. Somehow along the line, the rock community - and I'd suggest we as a national culture, as well - made a decision to extoll pain, anger and alienation instead of joy, hope and communal sharing. Not everyone, obviously, but far too many. And it's led us down some terrible paths. A tragic mistake.
SLYSPYHIWAY90 her story as well as to what was going on while writing as a duo, her feelings, emotions, her own trauma she has been through, etc... has been her own. Whether race, ethnicity, look, persona, style, whatever people thought she was perceiving, she always came from the soul. The magic of her, even when she didn't quite believe she could do it herself. She didn't even plan on being a singer at first really, but through chance and perseverance took that leap and is well of because of it as well.
The 1st version I heard of this was the Beach Boys 1976 recording, sung by Brian and Carl Wilson. I put this demo (great), the RB hit and the BB's in my Beach Boys covering and covered playlist. Thanks for the upload!
I don't recall hearing the Righteous Brothers version of this song before.....but you can hear in this demo how the song and vocal arrangements were written to suit the RB's vocal style.
You are so right. I was listening to the song and thinking of the emotional lyrics. I thought: “amazing insight to how a lovesick guy feels.:”. But she wrote it with them in mind. Classic song. Classic songwriter. Classic recording.
Yes But Carol and her Husband Wrote it...CArol King And Gerry Goffin. What talent we had in the 60's. Phil Spector produced it for The Rightious Brothers of course, 1966 i think it was released.
I am actually feeling this little Carole King joint, not only she wrote it she gave the melody to Bill Medley🎶 The Righteous Brothers version is definitely money but with Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound Bill Medleys’ diction was muffled to the point you didn’t understand what he was saying plus they didn’t have stereo back then😩 But just composing on the piano you can understand everything Carol King says which makes this a very nice love song❣️🎵
@@WafflesofMayyeah pretty much everyone knows what goffin wrote. So do you point this out all over UA-cam with other collaborations or just goffin/king???
You don't get credit as a songwriter for arrangements. He wrote the lyrics. His lyric writing is discussed at length if I recall in "Girls Like Us" which chronicles the lives of Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon.
I love this version! The Righteous Brothers messed up the bridge - I had to say it. They didn't do the call and response and harmony like she does here.
The shy multi talented songwriter who better shaped the music that was heard by everyone. Influential in the Motown movement and so much more. Compare her with Roy Orbison John Lennon, Barry Manilow, and it would be a hard decision. Thank you Carol King for being a part of my life.
I was wondering, were both King and Goffin aware about the length of their song, considering at that time, the standard length of a pop song was under three minutes?
I would love to hear a woman sing this song - certainly would love to hear Carol sing it today. I know she wrote it for guys - but it could be sung by a woman.
Well, not exactly. Clearly, it's a knock-off (all songwriters did them) but Lovin' Feeling doesn't do the mid-verse key change, for one thing. Chords are less simple in the King song. But, yes, it's a follow-up, which we could all hear even back in the day.
Oh how I wish Bobby Hatfield had given us this simple version as a solo. It's an incredibly beautiful song and the RBs are amazing. But the cacophony surrounding them renders it unlistenable and that is sad.
Happy 82nd birthday to the legendary Carole King 🎉
One of my personal 5 All Time Favorite Righteous Brothers Recordings and songs.
As of today, I just found out that my absolute, hands down favorite Righteous Brothers song, just Once in My Life, was written by none other than Carole King and Gerry Goffin! It's a stunningly beautiful song, and it shouldn't be surprising that it was written by such a talented musical craftsman.
Me too! I had no idea it was a Carol King song, my all-time favorite of the righteous Brothers! A soulful writer and soulful singers.

Great post, great song. I used to get scorned when I put this on the jukebox years ago. Did not chart well, but it’s Bill Medley’s favorite Righteous Brothers song. That’s good enough for me. Thank you Carole
It was definitely a hit and is still played on the radio.
Gerry R.I.P you was the kindest and nicest boss i ever had the privilege to work for, you will be missed........bye Gerry
+stefan issimo Please can you help me? there was a song here on YT called Baby I'm Afraid You've Lost it. Can you upload it? Please?
sorry I don't know why you think I have any of his music, I do not have anything that I can upload for you
+stefan issimo I just thought you might have it. It is such a GOOD tune! Many thanks!
+Eliane Vaccavo yeah I'll see if I can find it online somewhere for you
+stefan issimo Many thanks, again!
I like this version. Hauntingly awesome.

This is my fave song by the Righteous Bros.
I am with you,
What a phenominal writer, there are none, like Carole King, thanks for your excuisite listening songs!
The lyrics are fantastic of course the music is also....she is a genius just like Brian.
This is just her voice, (recorded twice) and a piano. Wow, this is gorgeous. Shows what genius level she was on then.
Amen. And Gerry Goffin. Lyricist and husband
really incredible innit? she was a great singer, and innovated. progressive.
Stunning.
I love her, she can do no wrong
She was just amazing. So much talent and emotion. What a song writer and singer. Plus, her "Tapestry" album still haunts me.
❤my Queen is a King❤❤
Incredible. Most people know the Righteous Brothers version, but check out the Beach Boys version, which is fantastic too,
Absolutely. It has the same kind of passion and soul that this version contains!
My favorite version as well
Would love to hear Carole sing this song today.
Carole is a great songwriter and the Righteous Brothers sang her song better then anyone who could have....
Anton for sure
I prefer the Beach Boys version. But it is an incredible song.
she knew who she wrote for! up on the roof gets positively murdered by the drifters, aretha and natural woman?? even her monkees songs are perfect for the band. pure legend
Song is excellence .....but it was Phil Spector's mad genius studio production that made The Rightous Bros. version a spectacular listening experience!!!
I know. I have The Phil Spector Back To Mono and it's amazing.
What an awesome version of this song. I just found out Carole King & crew wrote this. There are two different versions of this demo. The other one has a little higher pitch as if it is sped up or, maybe this one is slowed down. Both are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carole and Brian Wilson do it for me so often.
She takes Pleasant Valley Sunday to another level as well.
Love Carol King's music
Awesome! No, beyond awesome....
You really hear the melody..........................
Yes! And I love the way she's tailoring it for the R. Brothers.
The Spector production, imo, drowned everything in echo. That worked for some songs, but not this masterpiece. Rock's greatest songwriter--no equal.
WOW!!!! this is great!
Absolutely sensational.
The genius of Carol King She's written more music for people than I can remember. The unsung hero behind a lot of pop music. I want to know how does she do it ?

Goffin is unsung. King has by virtue of her recordings and performances been given well deserved recognition.
wow..did Gerry write this ABOUT Carole..and here she is...singing his words!!!!!
The 1st version I heard of this was the Beach Boys 1976 recording, sung by Brian and Carl Wilson. I put this demo (great), the RB hit and the BB's in my Beach Boys covering and covered playlist. Thanks for the upload!
I also put a Phil Spector demo and another cover by the Alan Price set with these in my Carole playlist.
Oh, yeah--they did a great version. It was raw, like this one. I always suspected this was a great, great song, and know we know it is.
That sums it up foe me as well. Bless her heart for finding all that she found!
Great find!
Priceless find!
Don't wait
fantastic
Carole belongs in the stratosphere with Lennon. Mccartney, Simon etc.
Don't forget her husband Gerry Goffin wrote the lyrics to all her early hits in the 60's.
Joe Bones, Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb
I regard her as the central influence on both Brian Wilson and the Beatles.
@@savio807 What do you mean? That she influenced the Beatles?
They belong with here
Once in my life is a great song and Carole king rules
Gorgeous!! I had no idea she wrote this song!! I think I like the Righteous Brother's version a little better, but still gorgeous!!
Majestic song :):)
Mind Blowing!! Genius!!
Back in the day when the RB's sang this I barely understood any of the words. At least I can understand every word Carole is singing.
Lynn Lobliner I love the Righteous Brother's version but sometimes I couldn't understand all of the words. I'm glad I ran across Carole's rendition.
True. Spector's demo is also crystal clear. But there's no lush Wall of Sound on either. It's difficult to hear the lyrics over that tsunami.
Just Once❤❤
I don't recall hearing the Righteous Brothers version of this song before.....but you can hear in this demo how the song and vocal arrangements were written to suit the RB's vocal style.
Plainly written for the Righteous Brothers--she even sings both Medley and Hatfield parts.
Yes! Astonishing, isn't it? Her voice was so expressive--rough but infinitely soulful.
I meant that in present tense! She's very much with us.
You are so right. I was listening to the song and thinking of the emotional lyrics. I thought: “amazing insight to how a lovesick guy feels.:”. But she wrote it with them in mind. Classic song. Classic songwriter. Classic recording.
love this song....nice version...but the Righteous Brothers was so powerful.
Yes But Carol and her Husband Wrote it...CArol King And Gerry Goffin. What talent we had in the 60's. Phil Spector produced it for The Rightious Brothers of course, 1966 i think it was released.
Mary Lynn Johnson-Kerker she wrote it for them
this is a demo for them
Oh Yes❤❤
I am actually feeling this little Carole King joint, not only she wrote it she gave the melody to Bill Medley🎶 The Righteous Brothers version is definitely money but with Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound Bill Medleys’ diction was muffled to the point you didn’t understand what he was saying plus they didn’t have stereo back then😩 But just composing on the piano you can understand everything Carol King says which makes this a very nice love song❣️🎵
You look beautiful❤❤
I've heard her "Don't Bring Me Down" demo, and it's just as amazing. And, as here, she clearly tailored it for the group she was pitching it to.
beautiful song! i even like an instrumental i heard of this!
Such an underrated singer. She’s as good a singer as a writer. IMHO.
Ah yes The Righteous Brothers and The Beach Boys sang it plus Phil Spector that lovely thumping orchestra "Wall of Sound" Best ever
Best song she ever wrote, among others.
And yet it's routinely ignored by oldies stations.
@@harvey1954 didn’t goffin write the lyrics and she composed the songs?
@@WafflesofMayyeah pretty much everyone knows what goffin wrote. So do you point this out all over UA-cam with other collaborations or just goffin/king???

you are insane
For us
If you went away it would hurt alot
Gerry wrote the lyrics...Carole was the melody and arrangements.
In addition to that, I can't imagine that the above and the rest of the Righteous Bros.' hits weren't an influence on the Philadelphia Sound.

Sorry I don't have any songs to upload
Pretty
I was wondering, were both King and Goffin aware about the length of their song, considering at that time, the standard length of a pop song was under three minutes?
It's probably one of the contenders for "first" long single, along with Good Vibrations, MacArthur Park, and Hey Jude!
You were very pretty
where did you find this? Great find!
Carole's demos were so fabulous, artists kept them!
I'm yours
Why doesn’t goffin get any credit for writing the lyrics to all these songs?
He always got credit,,,,always!!!!
I would love to hear a woman sing this song - certainly would love to hear Carol sing it today. I know she wrote it for guys - but it could be sung by a woman.
No wonder why she said girl don't let me down instead of boy.
Perhaps she originally planned this song for them.
I appreciate the upload but the pitch seems to be off.
This song sounds EXACTLY like You've Lost that Loving Feeling.
Well, not exactly. Clearly, it's a knock-off (all songwriters did them) but Lovin' Feeling doesn't do the mid-verse key change, for one thing. Chords are less simple in the King song. But, yes, it's a follow-up, which we could all hear even back in the day.
And of course the Phil Spector wall of sound made it fantastic
Please dknt play with .me
