I'm Gerry Goffin's daughter and while the interview voice is my father, the photo is Johnny Restivo (not Gerry) and the lead vocal is also not my dad singing.
Do you know who is singing? Is it Rudy Lewis? By the way, your Dad was a musical genius. His and Carole King's songs made this world so much better of a place.
I was just thinking what a great job your father did on that wonderful song,oh well, I;m probable the only one here old enough to remember johnny Restivo plus I am one of the soul surviving members the no hit wonders of the Brill building...
This man has an incredibly raspy but sensational voice and I am addicted to listening to this song! I hope he received some credit (whoever he is). Also it wouldn’t be fair not to mention the brilliant writing ability to the partnership of King and Goffin. Wonderfully talented.
As to the ongoing mystery of whose voice is on this demo tape...the picture is almost certainly Johnny Restivo, as Louise Goffin said. A teen heartthrob briefly in the late '50's to early '60's, who made a couple of albums and had one big hit, but then disappeared. Good looking kid from the Bronx. But who is singing? the voice sounds nothing like Johnny Restivo, wrong timbre, not at all raspy like this. The voice is absolutely NOT Rudy Lewis or Charlie Thomas from the Drifters. Tony Orlando? Slightly closer to what is on this video, but only slightly. He also recorded Up on the Roof in the 1960's. Or it could be someone who was just an unknown singer who was in around the building back then. Louise does not say who it might be. One of these days I am going to go onto Carole King's website or FB page and pose the question, unless someone beats me to it. I'd love to know!
Hi Lovely Louise . I'm not normally as cheesy . Can you tell your Mother , this Scottish guy thinks she is absolutely amazing and adorable. I was gutted when I never got tickets for Hyde park in London few years ago .You are a lucky lady, to be blessed with having her as your Mother. Such a living legend . And of course your remarkable Dad ....... And good luck to you too :-))) xx
Louise, thank you for your comments , I find all of this so fascinating , love your Dads music. Do you know who is singing in this tape ? Great Sound... Thank You , Tony
I love this version so pure - Louise Goffin says its not Gerry singing and based on Sam Williams comment I think Sam is right when he says its Tony Orlando. I have compared Tony's songs to Johnny's and Tony has that edgy sound heard on this demo I am just so grateful to all who have contributed to bring this demo to the public 🤗
The guy in the picture is not the singer it is Johnny Restivo who did not sing on it- nor did Gerry There seems to be some debate trying to figure out who is singing on it but whoever posted this has not responded to any of the comments or corrected credits
+Vermouth Xu Hi released three albums: It Ain't Exactly Entertainment (1973), Back Room Blood (1996), and It Ain't Exactly Entertainment Demo & Other Sessions (2010).
The singer in this demo run through is Rudy Lewis, the Drifters lead singer that recorded the 45 & LP versions of this song! He was also set to record Under the Boardwalk, but, died (at 27 years old) the night before the recording was to take place. Johnny Moore stepped up & sang the lead on Under the Boardwalk after Rudy was gone...
I just wish Louise Goffin or Carole would actually tell us who the singer is and end all the speculation. Louise has already said it's not her father. I love the Rudy Lewis vocals on The Drifters recording best of all. But I don't think it's Rudy on this demo. He had a more beautiful, powerful and soulful voice than we hear on the demo. Just listen to Rudy sing the line "At night the stars put on a show for freeeeee . . . " Listen to his soulful phrasing, unique tonality, pronunciation of "stars" and elongation and vibrato of "for free" and I think you'll agree, it is not Rudy on the demo. The demo is a higher pitched voice and a much more simple, straightforward delivery. It's most likely Tony Orlando, who Carol used for other demos back then. Good, but no comparison to the outstanding performance of Rudy Lewis.
Replace the word traveling with the word people and the song has a different meaning. Why was there a clip about him saying he wrote that song about civil rights and nobody was doing that then? The song is great both ways.
Saya pertama kali mendengar lagu ini kira2 thn 1963 maĺam dari Long Play yg di Pinjam Kakak saya ... ttpi berupa Music Instrumentalia... Now is 2024 on March , saya mendengar lagu ini kembali , tetapi dgn Vocal Song. Sudah 60 tahun yg lampau . Now I'm 72 yrs , may God in Jesus Christ Bless us all ... (from Indonesia) . @.

I saw Beautiful last night. Such a great show. Curious what your thoughts on it were?

This is my favorite version of this song. The vocal is sublime.
I agree
This demo is a knock out ! Jerrry Goffin and Carole King were master song writers from their earliest days.
Good voice & they did right putting in the lap of The Drifters, who immortalized it!
The ultimate version of this timeless tune.
Carole King's demos were said to be the best. Now, having heard this, I believe it!
What a fabulous voice!
This man has an incredibly raspy but sensational voice and I am addicted to listening to this song! I hope he received some credit (whoever he is).

which is why it not tony orlando.
@@theID2 I didn’t say it was.
@@baybeegalkk i didn't say you did.
the vocal part of this demo recording music composition was sung by tony orlando
This song depicted the need for us to find time to relax and let the pressures of life go.!
Great to hear an early, working version of this song, truly one of the most memorable ever.

God Bless You carole
Lovely to hear the demo version of a great song....and how close (or far away) it is to the 'Hit' version....
Great simple and wonderful
Really nice voice !!

"Buss-tell-en crowd." I love that.

The guy in the picture above is RCA recording artist JOHNNY RESTIVO, not Gerry Goffin. Both Johnny & Carole were recording for RCA at the time.
Is that Cynthia Weil?
So that's not Goffin singing?
Thank you for correcting that. Gerry is also not singing the lead vocal!
Great voice. Rudy Lewis? Who?
Goffin in had an awesome voice.
I din't think it is Gerry Goffin. I think it is a professional singer. I also don't think the guy in the picture is Gerry, but rather the singer.
The guy in the picture is not the singer it is Johnny Restivo who did not sing on it- nor did Gerry
There seems to be some debate trying to figure out who is singing on it but whoever posted this has not responded to any of the comments or corrected credits
I love the raspy nature of his voice. Sounds great.
it’s tony orlando that is singing the vocal part of this music composition
that is who it sounds like to me?
Gerry had a WONDERFUL voice! Wonder why he never released an album.

correct and he's not the singer on this.
@@LouiseGoffinOfficial Someone said it's Tony Orlando, but it's not him either. I do think it's one of the Drifters

That is definitely Rudy Lewis :o

Sounds like Charlie Thomas.
Lis this Freddie Scott?
I think it’s Rudy Lewis singing.
Gerry's singing of this song in the musical "Beautiful" is a very sad scene in the play.
Is that Carole on piano?
Rudy Lewis - lead singer of the Drifters: ua-cam.com/video/puM1k-S86nE/v-deo.html
Sounds a lot like RUDY LEWIS singing. I'd bet money.
I do not think so. Sounds more like Charley Thomas. But he denies singing this?
@@edwardhayes6111 I have a good ear for voices, but I defer to the possibility that it isn't Rudy. Thanks.
It is Rudy Lewis !!
Tony Orlando, a pre-fame, Brill Building denizen !
P.S. : Live the photo of rock and roll royalty: Goffin and King; Mann and Weil
Replace the word traveling with the word people and the song has a different meaning. Why was there a clip about him saying he wrote that song about civil rights and nobody was doing that then? The song is great both ways.
Could this be Jimmy Radcliffe singing?
I does sound like him. Certainly more than Tony orlando,
so . . this is Rudy Lewis singing ?
Oh God that is DEFINITELY NOT RUDY LEWIS!!! Clean out your ears LOL

sounds like Rudy Lewis to me

@@georgemay2547 nope tony orlando
This does not remotely sound like Gerry Goffin, is it really him?
Probably Rudy Lewis. Believe he sang lead on the Drifters hit recording.
absolutely not Gerry
I say it is Tony Orlando
Retract! Retract! Sorry!
I always thought this song was about heroin.
It's about escaping from the hustle and bustle of stress going only a few steps away in a crowded city ...something New Yorkers experience
I thought it was about throwing poop balls off the roof
