Oh man this is the best version and the best song on 15 Big Ones. I love the synthesizers on this track. In fact I LOVE when Brian used Synths during the late 70's-early 80's. I just dig it so much.
This is my favorite song off of 15 Big Ones, and it's not even close-- an absolutely tortured performance, with Carl and Brian both laying their souls on the line. The Beach Boys were often known for ending their albums with a curveball, but for me this song possesses the gravitas that was sorely lacking from the rest of 15BO. I dare say it's a masterpiece. For some UA-cam fun, try listening first to Carole King's arresting piano demo, then the Spector/ Righteous Brothers hit version and finally the Beach Boys 1976 remake, and then ask yourself what the definitive version of this song is. It's a tough question to answer for me. I also really enjoyed the photos you selected-- seems like you put a lot of thought into your choices. Peace.
I find this even more moving and believable than the Righteous Brothers version. Brian's croaky, strained voice really sells the "Just once in my life, let me get what I want" lyric. He sounds like he's been through such pain and he's just aching for some stability and happiness.
This was the first version i heard and I love it. They really capture the wall of sound backing and Brian sounds great when he comes in, rough but great.
In May '65, I imagine Brian in tears, blasting the Righteous Brothers' original top volume while reading the 8-page letter Murry mailed him, gestating "I'm Bugged at My Ol' Man".
15 Big Ones was as a 14 year old my first new release Beach Boy album and this song and In the Still of the Night just gave the end of the second side of the LP a gritty rock feel which I loved (happily oblivious to the fact they were covers). I also loved the inside pictures on gatefold album cover, a life long fan in the making🙂
I had 20-Golden Greats. Loved the Beach Boys for that. Then this came out.. I was trying to find some aggressive powerful rocknroll music at the time so this album was kind of disappointing.. the synth bugged the hell outa me.. .. but.. I was 12.. hardly any pocket money.. so I had to listen to the albums I had.. and eventually after millions of listens, the album became engrained in my soul. Still is all these years later. Fkn love it. Emotional ? - Absolutely! I know it off by heart, word for word, and phrase by phrase.. I used to sing it at the top of my voice al through my teens. Harmonies n all. Taught me a lot about songwriting and melodies. :-)
This is actually the 1st version that I heard. This is in my Carole King playlist with her demo, the Righteous Brothers' hit, Phil Spector's guide vocal over that backing track and other covers by the Action and the Alan Price Set. Thanks for the upload!
Despite being heavily "synthesized" - I think this instrumental track is superior to Specter's original track. The descending Caribbean Drum line at 1:19 brings shivers.
Couldn't have said it better myself, although, if Phil Specter did love this version I'm quite sure he would never admit it! I do know, however, that Carole King did.
This song is great in all three versions, but I prefer this version by Brian and Carl, though I can swear I hear Dennis in the background harmony. Carol king is just marvelous as always and her voice is so soulful and nostalgically recognizable for me that I cant help but instantly soak it in. The Righteous Brothers are great and as usual capture the emotion with their deep and moving harmony, but I always feel that Phil Specter over produces with his wall of sound effects. Too much echo and noise corrupting what could be a real clean and sweet rendition by an amazing vocal duo. But hey that was Phil's style and it seemed to serve him well, just not my philosophy to drowned out the vocals with a chorus of echoes. This version suits the song the best for me because of the painful and less polished vocals along with the haunting synthesizer arrangement.
Like some I also prefer the Carole King demo version found on here. It sounds like this BB-version has that synthesizer sound heard on "Beach Boys Love You", yes?
This version definitely is superior to Spector’s IMO, cause this one has Carl Wilson and a better arrangement that allows the song to breath and groove a little better
Sorry, I am now and always have been a fan of the Beach Boys. But nothing will ever surpass Bill Medley's and Bobby Hatfield's natural soul. Bill Medley could sing with the roughness in his voice like just about no other baritone, with the exception of Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops. That's what's missing in this version. Carl and Brian just didn't have the types of voices to convey the pain and urgency that Bill Medley did. I think they should have gone for an entirely different take on it....sung it in their own voices and style. That may have worked better.
Sorry don't agree. It's at least as good as the Righteous Brother's version. Actually the real original, Carole King's demo (on UA-cam) is staggering, so good the R.Bs didn't change a thing, cos it's perfect. This is great though.
One of the most underrated BB songs.
I love this even more!

One of my favorite Beach Boys tunes. Miss Carl so much
Carl's tender verse followed with Brian's raw chorus and the Boys backing, is just pure magic! Spector must have loved this!

@@josephmaccauley3640 The first version I heard of this song as well and one of my favourite Beach Boys tracks

”The Wall of Sound” Beyond Phil Spector!
That abandoned amusement park organ used so much during this time period forever cuts deep.
Terrific, poignant song! I want to hear these words once in my life...

Carl rocks this song!
This is beautiful...

Sounds like my experience!
This is a masterpiece.

Great pictures
Brian's voice here has a high dramatic charge.

You knocked it out of the park, jdingledine! Bravo.
Yes We Are Going Back The Eighties Again!!!!!
It Eclipses Spector,s Version because Spector Never had a Gifted Vocalist like CARL DEAN WILSON R.I.P
I love Carl as much as anybody, but Bill Medley was fantastic in his own right.
Brother Brian!
Thanks winstonsmithee-I appreciate it VERY much.
Carl singing lead.
Like some I also prefer the Carole King demo version found on here. It sounds like this BB-version has that synthesizer sound heard on "Beach Boys Love You", yes?
Yes, "15 BIg Ones" is where Brian first made use of these synth patches.
I Want My Life Back
I Want My Carl Back
Carl seemed to be a bit drunk on many of the 76/77 recordings.
Back to his best afterwards though
In 0.38 who said Oh bany baby.....brian????
yes, it is brian.
This version definitely is superior to Spector’s IMO, cause this one has Carl Wilson and a better arrangement that allows the song to breath and groove a little better
Beautiful song, I prefer Bill Medley singing it. I love the Beach Boys though.
Heartbreaking to hear Carl and Brian...production could have been better though..imo
Damn right. I only have one problem with your comment DaddyBog-NOT ENOUGH EXCLAMATION POINTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brian's voice is destroyed here. Sad from what is once was

I am also big fans of the Righteous Brothers but Brian's and Carl's vocals on this track are nothing if not full of pain and urgency. Cheers.
Not in a million years will this be better than the original

Beach Boys stuff always good but sorry, Righteous Brothers / Phil Specter " wall of sound" version is the defining and best one to this day.
Most of the rest of the album is cxxp.MIU album is better songs....
Spectors version far superior !!
Beach boys are great
Jeez,, i always considered Barbara Ann the worst BB release,,,BUT this is just horrid.....
Horrible! Give me the Righteous Bros any day.
This is terrible.
No it's supurb!
