couple tips. given room you can install the piston in the cylinder on the bench. put one one circlip in first and you can have your wrist pin as a stopper to not let it go any further into the bore.makes getting the rings in simple. you can also adjust valves on most heads on the bench as well, just bolt the head and cam cap on and adjust. also you only need a tack coat of sealant especially on the cam cap area. really you only need it where the split in the case is and or any damaged areas. the sealant will buldge and if it ends up falling off it will plug stuff up. put a tiny bead on and tap it with your finger on all ares it's needed. it may even look like it is not fully covered but a smooth machined surface will still squish a minor amount out. you'd be surprised at how little you actually need. good on you for help them out. way to be Joe.

We use ring install pliers, had a few break before them but none since. Trying to teach my apprentice the best i can. Hes young but has a lot more patience than i did at his age. Be losing him to MMI in September, hes about where you are at now, so he'll kill it when he gets there. Hell, im hoping he gets moved to the advanced course, i did, fast tracked it. Hes ready i feel, so I'll have to wait and see. Great job on that ole red pony Joe. Theyre fun little enduros.

Thank you this better than any program about the craft i have seen in 39 years. Good job. Keep it comming, dealing with a honda 250l that starst quick on cold wewther, but above 75 she make us sufer a bit.

Just a tip...if the rings are stuck replace the piston as well! The piston might have over heated and warped...pinching the rings. Would not reuse the piston. Cleaning the piston will not fix the gaps. Replacing the piston and rings is an inexpensive thing to do in your nice investment (an OEM one is only $50 on rocky mountain). Push the ring in the the cylinder with the piston not your fingers. Also, you don't need gasket maker....this is why you have the gasket. Replace the cam chain too! Everything is pretty much apart. It's also inexpensive. I don't know how many engine failures I've seen because of old chains. They stretch all the time. But great videos!

Nice vid man. A couple things I don’t agree with / pointers it’s not a green pad it’s scotch brite lmao. To check the ring end gap correctly you put the piston ring in the cylinder like you did then push it down with the piston to make it perpendicular with the cylinder wall then check the gap also no need for permitex on the bace gasket. I like watching your vids. 🍻

Hey Joe, you probably already know this, but I want to pass a tip on just in case you don't. If you break an old ring in two, you can use it's un broken end to scrape the piston ring grooves clean. I kept an assortment of old broken rings in a box, in my shop, until I finally bought a few ring groove cleaners.
